Internet Tethering - Desire General

Quick question, for those of you who have used tethering, do your carriers charge you extra over your cellphone data plan? I am planning on getting this phone and Softbank are saying that when tethered to a computer, internet traffic to/from the computer will be charged separately - around $100 for 100mb.
How are the carriers able to detect that there is a phone tethered, and is there a way to hide it, so it looks like the data is coming from the phone.
Thanks!

jeeez 100$ for 100mb :O
most of the providers wont charge you anything if you go over the limit couple times, if it will repeat they will limit the time you can access the internet.
my friend used tethering from his nokia n85/86 not sure which one and orange didnt charge him anything extra

My main concern is how they can detect that the data is coming/going to the computer and not the phone. Anybody out there with ideas?

hmm
In short, they can't tell the difference. I've been tethering for years, with 3, Vodafone and T-Mobile, and they have never said a thing. I've downloaded video from usenet, bittorents, ftp and iPlayer and far exceeded the fair use policies. Still, not a murmur.
If they did try to monitor where the data was going to, it would be a fairly simple matter to get around it, so I guess they don't bother.

You're lucky!
I once downloaded 8 GB overnight (thought I was using wi-fi ) and got an angry letter from T-Mobile saying if I do it again they will cap me ... That was ... 2 years ago and I have upgraded since then and migrated contracts, I wonder if it still stands ...

Ok, so maybe 8GB in one night is just a little bit excessive. Impressive, but excessive ;-)
Maybe just stick with the SD versions when tethered from now on...

Blame the uni wi-fi! Since then I'm afraid to even get to 500 MB!

Don't your providers cap your speed when exceeding a specific limit?
Here in germany you will get capped when u exceed your limit, like 200, 500, 1000, 2000 or 5000MB /month. Then you only get GPRS-speed.
Sucks, but better than paying 100$ and i never ever used more than 500mb a month, yet.

I suppose once I get the phone, I will download a 10mb file, and see if they change the billing. Better to be safe than end up with a crazy bill.
I have always assumed they didn't know you were tethering, but every time I ask someone from Softbank they are adamant that I will be charged excessively for tethering use - and they do not offer a flat rate amount for tethered data.

Hey, I am also in Japan. Just got my Desire and was thinking of tethering ... Any result from your test? Extra charges?

Did I Have Free Internet on T-Mobile Dash?

Today I upgraded my OS to Kavana 6.1 release. I love it.
I hardly ever (read: pretty much never) use the internet on the phone, but with the old T-Mobile official Dash 6.0 system (not hacked), I used to be able to access the internet and I thought I was charged on a per usage basis (but never really checked). In any case, I know for a fact I could access the internet on the old OS and I don't pay a monthly charge for it and it's not part of my plan.
So after I upgraded today, I could not get access to the internet at all. Checked the settings in the phone, checked T-Mobile's website, everything was set up right, but kept getting an error.
So I flashed back to the T-Mobile official release, and once again, I could access the internet. Checked all the settings, wrote them down, flashed back to Kavana. No internet.
Called T-Mobile. Didn't tell them I flashed to Kavana, but told them I suddenly didn't have internet access and asked for help. They said I don't have internet access because I don't pay for it, and T-Mobile does not have per data usage access, and there was nothing they could do unless I wanted to pay $20/month.
Can anyone tell me why this might have been and how I can get back the access I used to have?
As an aside....any way to get T-Zones working without paying for internet access (don't have time to search right now, yes I'm lazy, too!)
Thanks in advance for responses.
Jesus Gixxum, is it that time of the month for newbs. I've heard of this before at Howard Forums when I first got my dash. It's kinda an error on Tmobiles Part. It worked for some in the past like almost a tease when they first got there Dash's. The people eventually lost the free internet. It's like in Office Space when they fire Milton. They fixed the glitch at payroll. So, in either case be happy your weren't charged per kb. No there is no free way to get Internet even with Tzones. The cheaper way is the 5.99 Hack. (USE THE SEARCH) But personally if you want weather and newsfeeds etc. constantly updating. Pay the 19.99 or miss out.
Good luck in your decision or oh I don't have your Swingline stapler.
The $5.99 Tzones plus the proxy hack is the best option.

Yeah back in 07 when I first got my Dash for about 2 months I had free internet too. But that was when I was still using 5.0 Wow. 5.0. That was a year ago. Lol. It sucks how I meet people with the Dash that don't know what they can do with it. I knew this guy that had his phone for months and didn't know he had WiFi. We were on a college campus with free wifi everywhere.

It was more than 2 months. It was pretty much the entire time I've owned the phone (about 15 months), but like I said, I never use the net through my phone (I work in a car and it's got a mounted laptop with HSDPA internet connectivity). So it's not worth 5.99 to me, much less 19.99. I don't frequent the forums much since I switched to Dash from MPx220 so wasn't sure if this had been brought up before. Seems like since I can flash back to T-Mo 6.0 and have free access there should be some way to hack it, but that's not something I'm capable of myself. Just thought I'd throw it out there for discussion in case people weren't aware.
It's either like this: Keep the faster ROM and pay 6 bux a month or go back to the T-Mobile branded ROM for free net. Dude I know you can afford 6 dollars a month. If it's really that serious I'll send it to you... PSYCHE! But seriously you can easily scrape that up in 30 days. Either way you'll be stealing from the provider but I guess it wouldn't be as bad if you paid a little. I've never had the 20 dollar a month one but I think it's faster. That's what some people say.

Nope not true, its the same speed whether you use the T-Zones plan and do the proxy configuration or instead use the 20 dollar plan, you will not notice any difference in speed.
Well then what would be the point in paying the 20 dollars?
You're all kinda missing the point of this thread, not that your posts aren't appreciated. It's not how or whether to use the T-Zones hack, it's that the official T-Mobile 6.0 OS 1.22.531.4 allows free internet, and by reinstalling that OS I get it back. Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on why that is, and perhaps figure out how to get it to work with 6.1. I suspect it DID have something to do with T-Zones, as I could access T-Zones to check my minutes, etc., with the old system, but not with 6.1.
I don't care enough about internet on the phone to pay for it, but it was nice to know that it was there and available in an emergency just in case....
BTW, I'm in Southern California.
You were not getting FREE internet. You were geing charge per KB. T-Mobile has a page showing the configuration needed to get MMS and internet to work. jdoggraz has a link to the page in his sig.

Tried them, don't work. T-Mobile says they don't have a per KB charge for data.
Don't know how or why, but I am on flexpay, had internet for the first 3 months (the full 19.99 one) only for the rebate, cancelled it as I don't use it that much. They don't charge me anymore and it still works. Going on my 4th full month of all internet working without being charged for it, I called them multiple times to make sure I wasn't being charged and it wasn't activated and they insisted I must have been on a free wi-fi signal. Despite me knowing how to turn wifi on and off, and being in the dead center of a call center that blocks wifi and has no residences or other businesses within 4-500 meters...
I'm also on my 2nd rom, was on WM6 from here, think it was the HTC one, now using one of Kavanas, just using the regular settings. I really think it's a glitch in their billing/provisioning system.

Android 3gig allowance Tmobile

Can anyone help me find this on Tmobile's UK website (that the fair use allowance for android phones is 3 gig?)
I was one of those who bought from Mobile Phones Direct, found I had a 1 gig fair use allowance, phoned up Tmobile tech support and got it changed to 3 gig.
Anyway, just had my first bill and it was for £44! They told me I had no internet allowance. They admitted it was an error, then put me back on a 1gig allowance...
That led to my protests and so they then put me on Web and Walk plus for free, but I am concerned that in some way W&W will still prejudice my d/l speed.
While on the phone I tried to find the statement on their site about andriod phones to quote back to the sales staff but could not.
Anyone?

We'll monitor how much you send and receive each calendar month so that we can protect our network for all our Mobile Broadband customers. If you use more than your fair use policy amount, we won't charge you any more, but we may restrict how you can use your plan, depending on how often you go over your amount and by how much."
which is what I've now got.
Good? Bad? No different? Especially the issue of speed.
Should I get back to them?
Edit
Speedtest says dl speed is 0.35mbps, upload .051mbps. Can't remember what it was before.
My Speedtest results vary depending on where I am. At home I get at most 500kbps, but at the office I get 1800kbps. Seeing as I need internet when I'm NOT at home, that's fine with me as I have WiFi at home anyway.
So, you should check in different locations.

I would read them the riot act!!
You are paying for a service for which you are not getting, you were not advised it would only be 1gig.
Push for the 3gig.
My last phone on T-mobile was G1, even that had 3gig webnwalk.
Just tell them their breaking their terms of agreement, and you should either be allowed what you should be paying for of they terminate the contract at their own cost. For breach of T&C's.
Many hours on the phone later, calling agent after agent to get sense from them...
I have web and walk plus - which is the same as the 3gig allowance???????? - on my Desire.
Or at least the lady (in India) tells me.
I will believe it when I see it on MyTmobile.
And when the £44 is wiped.
And when the dl speed is not ****e.
Sigh.

Web n Walk plus is the correct addition for android devices. Web n Walk standard only gives you 1GB allowance and your download speed is restricted. Web n Walk plus gives you 3GB allowance and un-restricts your download speed.
Use the free speedtest.net app from android market to test your speed. If it has been activated, turn off your phone for 5 mins turn it on. It can take up to 24 hours for your download speed to sync up and get faster.
What they do is add Web n Walk plus to your account and then apply a monthly loyalty discount equal to the same amount.
Your download speed will vary depending on the usage on the cell site your connected to and your signal strength.
The download speed on a good day can easily exceed 2000kbps or 2 Mbps.
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/fairuse/
is the link and you can navigate to it by going to the T-Mobile UK home page, then click on the ‘Services’ tab along the top, then click on the ‘Internet & mobile broadband’ link on the left hand side, then click on the ‘Web’n’walk the legal stuff >’ link at the bottom of the page.
Hope this helps...
Thank you - speed test now shows 1400 kps. This is what it showed before they messed me around, but I was paying for it! Here's hoping.
I rather suspect that your problem is more to do with MobilePhonesDirect giving T-Mobile duff information than T-Mobile itself.
A friend of mine had real problems getting MPD to correctly provision data on their account.

Every chance, I've read of Desires sold by MPD registered with T-Mob as Nokia's
Mine was registered as a Nokia when I first got the allowance raised from 1gb to 3gb in April. My problem was that a month later they promptly sent me a bill for the internet use, then when I protested, they waived the bill, but changed me to 1gb unlimited. The online staff have no idea of the 3gb allowance for android phones out there in a call centre somewhere East. I was directing the lady to the particular TMob UK webpage for ages.
Yeah the call centre is in the east, but hey none of the other networks are any better. Just stay calm and guide them slowly through it, they get there in the end!
At 1400 kbps your on HSDPA unrestricted, so as long as you don’t get charged your fine...
I have had a 30 day rolling sim only contract with t-mobile. I thought that was sorted with unlimited web & walk but they didnt tell me there was a speed restriction on it. The full speed w&w plus is only availalable on 12 month contracts they tell me so I cant even change it. Fed up trying to talk to them so off to O2 now I think.
O2 is full of iphone users, so their network seems to be really full, dropped calls and restricted 3G, so im not sure if you will be any better with them.
Good luck though!

Persevere ,talk to technical assistance,no one else !
Took me about a week to convince them, but got there in the end.
I tried to get my internet allowance changed from 1GB to 3GB today as i've just received my phone today from MPD.
However i was told they can't change anything until the first bill is through and paid for?
Anyone else encountered that?
If you ask to get transferred to sales or technical support then they are UK based, make sense of what you're saying and will help you if you explain that you're getting nowhere with the call centre people.
I went straight through to tech support and told them I should have 3gb as per the website. They changed it there and then and let me use my internet booster for somthing else. Lets hope it sticks. I got a confirmation txt for my new booster but not web and walk +
I had the same problem from mobiles.co.uk

Wi-fi Teathering

Hi all,
Even though I have had my desire on Orange since it came out and I rooted it as soon as I can I am still working my way around it.
Ive heard mentioned quite a lot wifi tethering. From what I have figured out it makes the desire a wi-fi hot spot and u can find it as a hot spot on your pc, is this correct?
Now the main question which all ways revolves around money, is this classed as using your phone as a modem and as such will be charged £4 a meg http://www2.orange.co.uk/servlet/Satellite?pagename=OUKPersonal&c=OUKService&t=Service&cid=1044128222320&tab=2&mid=1137070319732
or will it be included as part of my mobile internet package with orange?
I really dont want to start using it and ending up with a huge bill from orange.
They won't know if you're tethering or not. Those prices seem very old as well!
I've used my phone "as a modem" in the past when I'm in a pinch (DSL and Cable go out at once..) and never had to upgrade. They don't seem to notice or care too much.
That being said. If you started killing it, using GBs and GBs it would be trivial to capture a sample of your traffic and see a Firefox or Chrome UserAgent, or some other protocol known to be on desktop OSes only. Then you could be for it. Never heard of this happening though, yet.
Those prices are very old - IIRC those prices were in effect 3 or 4 years ago, and were the reason I switched from Orange to T-Mobile.
To be honest though, the Orange 500mb data limit for mobile internet is pathetically small in the first place, so I'd only tether briefly and sparingly if I were you.
Regards,
Dave
You may say they are old but they are still there prices, I phoned up and asked them. The reason why is because they want people to use the dongles instead of the phone.
From the looks of it no one knows then, well with regards to Orange anyway. Ill be sticking to my O2 £15 a month rolling dongle contract then, lucky i get my work to pay for it as erm expenses lol

T-Mobile Data Speed Cap Question

I have the mytouch and T mobile with unlimitied data plan..Today I wake up do a data wipe install cm7 and when it goes to download the gapps apps from the market it takes forever..I waited 35 minutes for it to download gmail and google maps..I stop the other downloads and try to figure why my apps are downloading slow and why my internet is snail slow..while wondering I get a text message from T mobile telling me I have used to much bandwith for the month cycle and I will have a data speed cap till next cycle....This would be alright but it is not as I can no longer download any market apps ( I can but it takes 30 minutes to an hour )Nor Can I really surf the web.(Took me 25 minutes to get here)Pandora nor slacker work anymore either.
Has anyone else had this happen to them ? Also is there anything I can do to get them to uncap my service..I have been a T mobile Customer for 11 years and think they should do something.Just wondering if anyone else had this problem......
Thanks
I've never had that problem, but then again my max DL per month has been at 1-2GB tops..
Try calling them, but check your bill first to see what they have you clocked at so far for the current billing period... I think they don't impose that on you till you hit +5GB... Good Luck.
I get that all the time, well not this past month because I finally got internet at the house lol. I used it for tethering and alot of internet & email & I would always seem to get it with 2 or less weeks left. I guess it's once you go over 5gb t-mobile slows you down.
I haven't actually had it happen YET, but when I went on the website, I noticed it said I was approaching the data cap... Never saw that before. D;
Thanks..I looked and I am at 5.09gb ..Looks like I am slowed till the 23rd..I dont tether so it must have been from slacker / pandora ..I will have to watch it more next month..
You can download t-mobile's 'my account' app from the market so you can keep a closer eye on your data usage, although, if you have unlimited data plan you can't set an alert for it, even though 5gb is the cap...
I get close to 3-4gb every month and never notice a slow down...I can understand a cap of 5gb to keep the network from being overloaded...I thether and use it to watch HULU and nightly roms so cant see going over, unless something crazy.
... Doesn't make sense.. I'm paying $30/month for "unlimited"... just to get capped?
it does make sense.. u "read" it and signed it. its all in the contract so yes the data is unlimited but once 5gigs is reached in one billing cycle its cap'd to run 2g/edge until the cycle refreshes. it use to be 10gig max but with the recent explosion of smart/data phones the demand for bandwidth and speed are at an all time high. i also learned this the hardway.. now i use wifi anywhere i can to limit my data usage. but even then its still hits 4gigs a month. its mainly a problem for us that use our phones as primary internet.
Use wifi as much as possible. I am fortunate enough to have wifi at work and home and my data usage on tmo's network is ridiculously low for the amount of data I use.

No,
it does not make sense to people that signed an unlimited data plan in 2009, the changes for data cap were made on the new contract July 18, 2010. I know that Tmobile reserves the right to make changes, but they also state that they are suppose to give a 30 day notice. Did anyone receive such notice in data changes? I don't think so. You all can say well is insane to spend more than 5gb of data, but you have to understand that many people use their phone a lot and id their right to be upset when they signed an "UNLIMITED" plan and then is changed without prior notice.
also be aware that T Mobile slows you down to 54kbs. Welcime back Dial Up!!!

like i said, technicaly they dont make it not unlimited.. they just cap the speed, so yes it does make sense.. u signed up for unlimited data not unlimited data at its peak speed, that just sounds retarded. if you signed up before the change then you shouldve requested to be grandfatherd and they wouldve been happy to keep the customer happy. and fyi a news letter and disclaimer was put out for all pre existing customers before the change was made. and even then they didnt change the unlimited part. ill leave this the way i leave any other service provider discussion...., ive been with tmob since sidekick original no color.. not once did they treat me wrong or charge me for something i wasnt responsible for and aware of. i dont recommend but there is an alternative.. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and even Metro all got u covered.
good day.
I think it ok to note that this is not only a T-Mobile thing, every carrier does this. I know that there is a hack on XDA that is built into the MIUI roms that actually cuts off the signal that your phone sends to Verizon that you have reached the cap so you never see your data slowed down. I do not know how they wrote the hack or if it is possible to do something similar with a t-mobile phone, but it might be worth looking into.

you are paying for unlimited data because you get unlimited data - they just don't guarantee at what speed you'll be able to download at...
I completely understand your predicament! I was in your same shoes.
T-Mobile does not charge extra for anything more than 5gb, but they do make you eat your buffet food through a straw! Now, I remedied my problem with the wonderful program 3g Watchdog, which is free. Set it to your monthly cycle, and you can even place a widget with usage on your screen. Very handy little program.
So yes, I tried calling and talking with the reps, nothing will work. I spoke with managers, and people from India. They can't do anything about it. I couldn't even pay them more money! How ridiculous! But alas, I had to see the bright side. Looking at AT&T or Verizon, you have limits of 2gb or so and then they charge you for anything over that. Screw that! So I figured if I'm downloading 5gb of data in a month, then I need to get my ass together and make my life work for me. So please figure out your **** lol, you'll feel so much better when you do.

No,
it does not make sense to people that signed an unlimited data plan in 2009, the changes for data cap were made on the new contract July 18, 2010.

That ssssssssssucks!
I went to T-mobile store last week to pay my bill, the man told me about the upgrade discount after a year, when we reached the 4G topic I asked about this slow down of speed after 5Gb and he was like he had no idea, he repeated "Noou, it's unlimited" "that what you heard is for those with plans of certain data limit"
I told him that's what it should be, I said it wouldn't make sense to have such high-speed and still be limited :S
Serously! I'm paying $-freaking-30 monthly for internet access that is like 1mb of speed on this lil' phone, same as it would be using a DSL, why would they put a limit?
Tmo-guy- Because it's a wireless service-
Me: My ass! that ain't no reason!
Again makes no sense....

Its people like you who make the system slow for everyone. Why do you think att is so ****ty? Its because too many people are using their iphone for everything. Simple supply and demand. Tethering should be used as needed when no other internet service is avalible. I for one like the cap and I welcome it to a charging alternative. Its like any other provider. If you get greedy you should get punnished.

Why should there be such capabilities offered if that's going to bring out risky complications to the system?
That's not reason to call one greety and 'punish'
Is not like one would like to reach a cap just because it can be done and bother other's connections.
Tethering is not as different as using your phone, since our smartphones' web browser is as fully capable as a computer web browser.
Also think of the 4G + What's next??
If one service imprubes why not the others that can prevent issues from the same.
A page loads trice as fast, makes the user able to go on where others would stop, so you see it's not a malicious intention but what the user is led up to.

I hit the cap every month around the 15th...bill cycle on the 25th.. But I use a ton of data due to I show photos and deal with contracts that I am unable to dl at work.

[O2UK] Have you tethered your phone connection?

Hi
I am thinking about getting a Motorola Xoom, an LG Optimus Tab or a Samsung Galaxy 8.9 (when announced), but I am unsure about getting a 3G version or a WiFi only versions and just tethering to my Desire and using the mobile internet connection.
Does anyone use the tethering on their phone on a regular basis on O2UK? If so, have you been charged for it? Because I believe they are supposed to charge you if you are tethering.
If I got a 3G and WiFi version, I would probably just swap my Sim Card between the Desire and the Tablet, or just get a Pay As You Go simcard and just put it in the Tab and use data on there.
I know this is not a Desire question, but I thought this would be the best place to post.
Stew
I take it you don't have a home connection with a wireless router? I'm not on O2 but I have read that they do charge for tethering so I wouldn't risk it if I was you.
I've used tethering with my desire on O2 a few times with O2 and I've not had any issues, I wouldn't worry about it.
The tethering bolt-on is £7.50 at present, but it will be included in all newer tariffs in the not so distant future as I think they're finding the bolt-on to be unenforcable.
Are you on one of the older unlimited plans or the newer tariffs with a data allowance? If you're on the older unlimited you should be fine although don't go overboard or you'll meet the fair usage policy and probably a bar on internet access from your phone. If you're on one of the newer tariffs you'll probably find you go over your allowance quickly, but you wont be charged anything extra, you'll recieve a couple of text messages and have your connection speed throttled to about 13kbps!
Basically if you're an existing customer you'll be breaching their T&C, but you're unlikely to get caught and you certainly wont get charged anything else if you do the most you'll encounter is a bar on your account until your next billing date. If you were to upgrade next month the chances are you'd have tethering for no extra charge anyway. If you were to upgrade next month the chances are you'll be allowed to tether anyway.

Yeah I am an existing customer with an old Unlimited contract, I think I might just try tethering since it will be "Android traffic going through an Android device" ha ha.
I might change contract if they start building it into new tariffs, either that or buy a MiFi and a PAYG sim card.

Yeah I do, but I travel a lot so I wondered if I could use my existing data plan, instead of having to get a new one!

You should be fine unless you go really overboard, give it a try about a week before your billing date, the worst that will happen is you'll end up having to rely on wifi for a week with your phone.
It'll really depend how much you already use data on your phone if anything happens, a few gigs a month on with unlimited data is generally fine as there's no limit set in stone, it's all about your usage "impacting other customers".
