I received the HTC Desire from Mobiles.co.uk today (shipped on Saturday). I selected a Vodafone 12 month contract.
The phone appears to be completely unbranded and has the following software information:-
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 32.30.00.28u_4.05.00.11
Kernel version: 2.6.29-97da29ed
Build number: 1.15.405.3 CL150129 release-keys
Software number: 1.15.405.3
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
How do you tell if it is sim-locked, and does anyone have a newer firmware version?

Try a non-Voda sim in it!
would be good if guys with t-mobile could post their soft versions and then eventually if they have any issues with the phone ask MazMx5 to try to do things on his desire
This was from mobiles.co.uk on a t-mobile contract

Interesting. The Generic HTC ROM going the rounds is the same version as on yours. I have already flashed my T-mobile version of the HTC desire with the generic ROM to get rid of the "minor" branding. The case has no T-mobile markings.
Kernel version: 2.6.29-97da29ed
kernel: 2.6.29-97da29ed [email protected] #1
the only difference, maybe the unlocked vodafone desire is simply unbranded-unlocked t-mobile phone?

yes, exactly my thoughts, .. we can confirm this when the unlocked version appears, ... hope they all dont have the same version .. it will be stupid and we would have waited for nothing

Hi. I have 2 x Desires: 1 for my wife and 1 for me. Both bought from MobilePhonesDirect on TMobile. They are both slightly different so I checked the software version it is running and they both have different:
kernel version:
build number:
software version:
How can I update them so they are both the same? Will the Froyo update that is coming update all 3 sections?
Thanks in advance.

Is there any particular reason why you want to do this? If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage.
At I guess, I'd say you've probably ended up with one generic unbranded phone, and one actual T-Mobile one - does the Internet icon look the same on both phones?
If you post the actual version numbers for both of your phones, we should be able to provide some more information.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave and sorry for the delay but I wanted to wait until both phones had been updated to see if they became in sync. Alas.... anyway the version numbers are:....
Mine
Kernel version: 2.6.29-0cb9f166
Build: 1.21.405.2 CL174215 release-keys
Software: 1.21.405.2
Wife
Kernel version: 2.6.29-54b7033a
Build: 1.21.110.4 CL175581 release-keys
Software: 1.21.110.4
Can you shed any light on the disparity? Also if is as you think, that my wife's is locked to TMobile - could you point me in the right direction of a tool/instruction to unbrand it - the same as mine. I have had a quick look and it all seems more convuluted than with my old Winmo device.
Thanks again.

Hey, yeah the difference in build numbers - Precisely ".405" and ".110" show that they are different un/branded handsets - You will either need to root or use a goldcard to unlock the T-Mo handset.
Goldcard: Link
Rooting: I think there's a thread in the dev section of the Desire forum
Heyyy,
I've tried a search but can't find the exact answer im looking for.....
I've got a HTC Desire bought it off o2 on contract and want to know if its contract-locked (meaning i wont get froyo this weekend), when I turn it on it shows an o2 logo but i've just put an orange sim card in it and it worked fine.
The Software Information is.....
Firmware Version - 2.1-update1
Baseband Version - 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernal Version - 2.6.29-c8d11160 [email protected] # 1
Build Number - 1.20.207.3 CL171460 release-keys
Software Number - 1.20.207.3
Browser Version - Webkit 3.1
I don't know if any of that information above helps lol, I'm new to the android scene so trying to catch up, thanks in advance for any help!
Judging by your software number, you won't get froyo update anytime soon
OK,
Being mega-thick here but I flashed/rooted my Desire a while back, and now thinking I should update to see if I can improve my shocking battery life.
BUT, I'm stupid and forgotten what ROM I flashed, but want to stick with it. I think its OpenDesire, but cannot really tell.
In settings > Software Information:
Android version: 2.2
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gf9c0527 [email protected] #1
Build Number: 2.09.405.8 CL218635 release-keys
Software number: 2.09.405.8
Anyone got any ideas or another way of working it out so I go with updating the right ROM?
That is the official FroYo WWE build, albeit one below the current version
Yours - 2.09.405.8
Current: 2.10.405.2

You're fine. =]
oh, so i take it mines up to date then lol
Looks fine just earlier firmware release. I wouldn't recommend applying any OTA updates thought as later firmwares are not rootable, but then if you intend staying stock and unrooted upgrade away

Fair enough if your happy with stock. But the likelihood of bricking it, if your capable of following instructions is infintinesimal
you dont know my luck lol
Use my tools, you can't go wrong. Nobody has bricked a DHD using them yet, I use very tight safety measures
If something is not right, the tools will just abort and return the device to square one.
thx jkoljo, ill concider doing it once im used to the phone
just a thought. am i missing an update then?
