I received the HTC Desire from Mobiles.co.uk today (shipped on Saturday). I selected a Vodafone 12 month contract.
The phone appears to be completely unbranded and has the following software information:-

Kernel version: 2.6.29-97da29ed

How do you tell if it is sim-locked, and does anyone have a newer firmware version?

Try a non-Voda sim in it!
would be good if guys with t-mobile could post their soft versions and then eventually if they have any issues with the phone ask MazMx5 to try to do things on his desire
This was from mobiles.co.uk on a t-mobile contract

Interesting. The Generic HTC ROM going the rounds is the same version as on yours. I have already flashed my T-mobile version of the HTC desire with the generic ROM to get rid of the "minor" branding. The case has no T-mobile markings.

the only difference, maybe the unlocked vodafone desire is simply unbranded-unlocked t-mobile phone?

i have emailed mobiles.co.uk about it but so far no response, as im thinking of gettin the unlocked/unbranded desire on vodafone for 12 months, but seems like ill have to wait couple days to get some info confirmed
I post this message for my friend whose account isn't yet verified.
Hello,
few months ago I tried to root my Desire with my friend, but it didn't seem to go according to plan and we thought that this isn't working and decided to leave the rooting process.
However, now I'm not able to update it to Android 2.2 OTA, and not even by manual update.
So if you guys could tell me what's the problem because i don't have a clue.
I'll write down the software information if it helps, could this Desire be rooted now anyway? And if it is, what should i do?

I've been looking everywhere and cant find a single post that explains this. Maybe is not possible but i dont know so im asking.

i try many root tools still not work. I wait almost 1hr still loading.
Have you installed Visionary and attempted to temproot? If so, what happened? What other tools are you talking about? What is still loading after 1 hr? Are you stuck in a bootloop? If so, have you removed the battery and tried to reboot again?
Have you searched the forum for instructions? I was under the impression that there was an absolute wealth of info here...
You'll need to provide a bit more info, mate.

Try these;

or

the bottom one seems to be the most popular
UPDATE: 26 OCT 2011:
Just used the bottom method on my friends DHD running 2.50.707.4, worked like a charm (so easy), just follow the manual and you should have no issues what so ever ... got the latest version with built in Goldcard (link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352)
Then flashed Capy's latest 3.1 Runny, now the DHD has a new lease of life
Great work and thanks to all (for the developers of the Ace Hack kit, and capy for providing us the awesome roms)
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium
A few resources via my sig might help.
Gave up on my HTC Desire HD a while ago and went to the Optimus Black. Anyway coming back I have no idea how to root my phone from 2.3.3 Branded on Vodafone Australia. Previously before I left the DHD I tried Visionary and failed since it wasn't running Froyo. Any solutions? (Preferably without Downgrading first)
