Sticky removed that shouldn't have been? - About xda-developers.com

We've recently done some spring cleaning! If a sticky was removed that shouldn't have been, link us to the thread, and tell us why. Our aim in removing stickies was to clean the forums up by removing threads that were no longer as relevant as they once were. Of course, these threads weren't deleted, but they no longer stay on the top of the forum.
Before you point us to a thread, ask yourself this about the thread in question: is this thread of vital importance to XDA users, so much so that they should see it each and everytime they enter this forum?

Kk, will notify you if i find one

Congrats for the cleaning!
It was necessary

It has exactly 6 stickys now

Also, just to add to what svetius stated above, if you feel some current stickies do not necessarily require sticky status, please inform me either on this thread or by PM so I can review said sticky

Comments, Concerns, Suggestions?

I am one of the new moderators of this forum and i would like to start off with a thread that talks about what changes you would like to see in this forum. Give me any threads that you might think need to be sticky'd and any other organization you'd like to see. I and another moderator, which will not be named yet, will discuss the best way to roll this out for everyone.
i dont have any suggestions... just would like to congratulate you. so, congrats pudgedaddy
Welcome Aboard, Pudgedaddy & Congratulations.
I am also the new moderator of the Excalibur and Smartphone forums. Please drop by and post your comments, concerns and suggestions. This is a Great Start to the forums. Please keep this thread clean and free from any redundant questions. Only post when there is a need to be.If you would like to see something happen, let me and pudgedaddy know. We will discuss and come to a conclusion to see if your request should be fulfilled. As a start, I would also like everyone to know to keep WAREZ out of Excalibur & Smartphone threads. Any user that asks for WAREZ will be warned and eventually banned if the question arises again.
In the near future, Me & Pudgedaddy will compile information to be stickied for your benefit. Any requests for sticky's will be looked into and only sticky's that deserve to be stickied will be stickied.
Thanks for your co-operation and once again, Great job Pudgedaddy.
Cheers!
Congrat!
YAY !!!!!!!! Moderator for Excalibur!!! FINALLY
First, lets do some stickys haha
1) Wiki
2) Rules & FAQ for the forum
3) Most useful threads for

Yes
Oh Thank you Pudge & Luky for offering your services. Thank You XDA for answering the call. Have a wonderful day you already made mine!
Thank goodness!
Maybe this will lead to a reduction in redundant questions by people who do not even bother to search this huge forum and its wealth of knowledge, if that is even possible. I think the most pertinent topics should indeed be stickied, along with deletion or condensation of old threads that are either not relevant, duplicated, or never received replies. Trim the fat, ya know? Thanks for committing your time and effort to make this forum as productive as possible!
Finally! Congrats, guys. Be good public servants.
I would definitely add a sticky to the wiki, but I'd also suggest you two be careful when sticky-ing things. If there are too many stickies, it ends up being the same situation we have now.
Cleaning up the posts we have now is more important than stickies.

Myself, Pudgedaddy & Mikey will be moderating the Excalibur forum as well as the smartphone forums. Any concerns, comments & suggestions, please feel free to post here or PM us. We'll do the best we can to cater to your needs.
Important Announcement: This thread as well as other threads will be revamped, edited and threads that need to be stickied will be done over the weekend. We will also be cleaning out the forums as much as we can to avoid redundancies and move threads accordingly. If you have any IMPORTANT Information in regards to Excalibur or Smartphones, please forward it to us at your earliest convenience - before the weekend preferably.
I would appreciate everybody's cooperation with us and help us make this a cleaner & better place.
Thanks for your co-operation in this matter.
Congrats guys I am glad that we finally have the three of you to keep this forum a little more organized.
First, congrats to all the new mods!
Secondly, i suggest polishing and sticking Profezza's post about official ROMs (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=381726&highlight=offical+rom).
That's what I got for now.
Cheers.
I just fixed a problem that I created a thread for. I would like to know how to change the thread title to include, "solved", in the title. This way everyone would know that the problem has been fixed. Sorry, if this is already possible. I cannot figure out how to do it. Thanks, and if you want update my sorry, not a noob thread, if you want, to say solved in the title. My last post explains everything. Later.
My bad...

I was contemplating on closing it out but don't close it because if we do close it, then people who need help on the same topic could have issues that outerdepth didn't have. If you think closing it could help, then please proceed mikey.
Mikey & Pudgedaddy - Stickies need to be cleaned up i.e. every unrelated post should be deleted in my opinion. We shall split up stickies when I get a chance to talk to you guys then work on making this place much more organized as well as make it easy for newbies to get the information they need. Please comment.
Guys, I understand there are a lot of stickies at the moment. Everything will be re-organized, edited and finalized hopefully by the end of this weekend so there's only "threads" that absolutely need to be stickied.

Where are rules and all admins? (HTC General forum)

Where are clear FAQs, Sticky notes, Info and news in a beggining of HTC General forum?

Good point but you can not blame the Mods or Admin they do a great job on this site and there are lots of members that do not Abide by the RULES do not bother reading back posts and just post a problem that has been posted before, every day i tell people to read back posts before they post a new problem but it falls on Deaf ears

You didnt get the idea. I didn't blame any admin. I think they have enough things to do. I am just wondering, where are warning, bans, etc.
Maybe we need some, 3 warning and ban for a week? If someone was helpfull, i could give him +1 point, if not -1. System like that.
And there is not enough FAQs, News, Notes in start of forums.
Also maybe there is not enough of admins?

Its a a vary hard system to Police when you go down the warning side of things and points i have seen it split up a forum before as the ban was not agreed with by the members and they boycotted the forum because of it not saying thats the same in every case.
And every body knows there is Rules they just choose to not comply like i said they don't even read what was written in the last hr so theres no hope for the rules. They have a device with a chosen ROM and stick to that thread but there is a lot more to XDA than that

We're working on appointing forum-specific mods for each and every forum, as per the moderation system you may have read about. It's a big job, as you could imagine, but we're making good progress.
In the mean time, please feel free to PM me directly with any occurrence of spam, etc. =D
And of course, you're able to use the "report" button on a post to notify a moderator about spam or whatever you feel should be reported.

you do know you just bumped a 3 year old thread?
There only sticky threads.. If you hover over some options.. you can get brief details about it which you can call sticky notes I guess as it always pops up..
Nice near 3 year bump.
But with the question answered, thread closed.

[POLL] The Holy Flame War is Upon Us - (D-Day) - War Briefing: Day 4

I'm sure all of you are getting sick of the flood of questions that come in and the single question and answer thread is just too long to go through to find questions let alone answer them. Hopefully we can get enough people on board to let the moderators know that this is a welcome addition. Seeing as how many phones have highest number of threads in the Q&A section, I think it is a worthy addition.
Problems:
1) Lack of moderation - the volume of posts, especially from new users is higher than the what can reasonably be moderated by the current number of moderators.
2) Relevant threads containing real information are buried by new threads (many which are off topic or not posted in the correct forum)
3) The forum is disorganized, which exacerbates the issue of new users asking duplicate, off topic, poor, misinformed questions.
4) There is an incredible lack of information for new users on usage, which creates a contentious atmosphere between new users and senior members who re-answer the same questions over and over, most of the time about HOW to use the forum and search features.
5) User modifiable resources like the wiki are unknown or obfuscated from new and long time members alike, thus rarely used. (On a side note....we should all be using the wiki to push pertinent information, valueable posts, references and guides up so that noobs (and experienced users also) can find them easier.)
Proposed Solutions:
1) Create additional subforums to help organize posts into relevant categories. (I vote for at least Q&A. MOST popular forums on XDA have this, so there is certainly precedent.)
2) Better sticky posts, with clearer titles. "Hello from your moderator." is not as clear to a new user as "[MANDATORY README]-[FORUM RULES][QUESTIONS][INSTRUCTIONS][If you don't read this you will be flamed, harrassed, possibly shanked in your sleep!]" You are reading this thread because of the title...that or you saw the DVDA postfix...you sick sick bastard...either way I win.
3) More moderators. It is far too hard for Whosdaman to constantly update sticky posts with relevant info. It is up to everyone here to get that info out so we aren't bombarded with questions that have been answered a hundred times. Wiki anyone?
4) We have a great resource in user editable wiki. There is a lot of stuff that can be done BETTER on a wiki than in a 1000 post thread, like reference material, guides, and instructions. We need to make it obvious to ALL users that the wiki exists and get people on board with updating it. Threads are a great way to hash out possible solutions and have a group discussion, but a lot of times what people need is a reference or guide and they shouldn't have to search a 1000 post thread to pull the relevant information.
5) Original posters need to update their OP when new information is revealed or when there is misinformation in a post. Having a post that's title says your flash cell is about to explode only to have to read 600 posts to find out that this information is untrue helps no one. Discussion is GREAT. Misinformation is NOT, and only fuels the confusion and duplicate thread issues.
From The Front Line:
Thanks for the outpouring of support and ideas to help get the ball rolling. Several of our ideas have been recently implemented so I am really hoping for some good news next war update.
20110109: Woot! We now have Q&A. Thanks mods and supporters!
20110109: My social experiment of double entendre "sticky posts" has 2000 views in only a couple of days. I'm not going to call this one confirmed, but if it stopped even 1 bad thread it was worth it.
20110109: We have sticky wiki in all the subforums. Now we need to add content to the wiki before people stop using it.
One Last Thing:
There are very few things we can change with regard to how many new users visit this forum, or the knowledge level of these users. The only thing we CAN do is make what they need to do as obvious as possible to these users, so that we can spend more time coding and writing relevant posts, instead of redirecting people to the search button, or frustration flaming newbies.
+1 agreed. This is ridiculous, it's a clusterf**k in these forums. Q & A is exactly what we need.

No, Q&A IS the general forum. What is needed is a sticky in the general forum with a CLEAR and concise description of how to:
root
use Odin
use clockwork
flash themes
flash roms
battery saving methods
airplane mode trick
DRM services and how to stop them
and ANYTHING else that gets asked multiple times a day. I dont know if some sort of limited moderator status can be granted, but if so it would be nice for noobnl, Daemon and a bunch of others to have said status and be able to update this sticky at any time. I am sure there are a ton of people who would be glad to do it.
Then, what is needed is a sticky called FROYO SPECULATION, where EVERY thread that deals with speculation of the coming Froyo release is moved, and all discussion of that topic is directed.

That is EXACTLY what the Wiki is for. But people either don't know about it, use it, or update it. Anyone can update the wiki. Leaving all of the cleanup to moderators isn't fair, or effective at getting stuff up quickly. There should be better indication to go to the wiki and more people need to start using it.

I agree. Or a sticky at the top of ALL of the subforums linking to the wiki. There used to be a STICKYWIKI post, but the title got changed.
I agree the wiki needs serious editing and updating, and we should all be somewhat responsible. Maybe if you flame a newbie, you have to add a paragraph, like a swear jar smoothone, get typing hahaha.. sorry... had to... but I get the feeling you dont mind.
Honestly, I wish sprint would just say screw you, no froyo. This way, people would move on, keep developing, not thinking to wait on that elusive source code... and stop *****ing. The repeat questions, etc werent that bad until that stupid 26th thing brought a bunch of new people at once, so everyone here who was already waiting and annoyed, then get bombarded with new people who heard about XDA from engadget.
BTW... wheres those two who had those super secret sources?????? Kinda quiet....
Bloggers: do not cite an XDA member, or their word they have a good source unless they show you the goods! Somehow, everyone thinks XDA really knows more than the average joe... and dont trust Sprint sales info or personnel!!!!
Sure, let's create yet ANOTHER ignored forum that the mod(s) get to monitor and spend more time on while every single new user here ignores it and the search button just to post the question anyway.
Instead of making a new forum, we need another moderator added to help manage the forum.
And make a post count minimum to START a new thread!! Too many ppl coming over straight from google and, not knowing how to use xda (or their effen owners manual) to its fullest.

Dumping questions to a Q&A forum creates less clutter for the other forums, thus relevant threads will more likely be in the first two pages.

I love that idea, but there are occasionally relevant posts from new users. I would like to think that not EVERYONE that initially comes to XDA is a moron. But I guess I'm a glass half full kind of guy.
It looks like a lot of people are in favor of it.
The Q&A forum will just be full of people asking the SAME QUESTIONS over and over and over again. Why not just create a sticky that either links to an updated wiki or better yet that lays out nicely how to do basic things with the Epic4g?

That will happen in any forum. We do need a sticky, but don't expect that to stop the noobs from asking before reading.
I see that some of the other Galaxy phones here on xda have a Q&A in addition to a general section. General is used for general discussion and Q&A is for all questions. It seems like it would be more obvious for noobs to wander into the Q&A section to ask questions and hopefully save the mods some effort while also cleaning up our little corner of this website.

why ten post

All I want is to post my questions and answers in the rom forum of my choice

The ten post limit is because alot of new members post questions in the dev section. If you are a general user of xda then a ten post limit is nothing.
Maybe try a different heading thay describes your problem in a nutshell. By the way what is your problem, you never said.

Not at all, actually. While myself and others are also guilty of posting such banter in ROM threads, that isn't where it actually belongs. Questions posted in the ROM threads should be posted only if they're concerning the actual development of the ROM rather than the usual "how do I...?" or "wow, this Rom is great, thanks dev!".
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713251
It appears a reminder may be in order, about the purpose of the development fora on XDA.
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away. Developers don't want to wade through 20 threads of "Help me urgently" to find their threads for porting and fixing camera issues etc. Similarly, if a thread is designated as discussion for developers say, porting a camera fix, please do not post in there asking "When will it be ready?", "Can I flash this yet?" etc. This is both completely disrespectful to those working on the project (you evidently haven't read the important posts in the thread), and also is making it harder for developers to find comments from other developers or testers when required.
Similarly, don't make loads of "Thanks for your work here" posts in an active development thread. It's just as annoying to developers as asking when something will be ready. If a ROM is complete, then go ahead and thank the developer if you wish, but don't go into threads for devs only, and interrupt it to post "thanks". It's basically spamming, and is treated as such.
If you are posting in development, you should have read every sticky and notice there, and should be actively developing or helping in the development of something. Developing isn't installing a ROM, or using a tweak, it's creating a ROM or other hack or tweak. If you haven't read for several days before starting out on XDA, you are likely about to ask something already solved. I registered on XDA when I first wanted to post, and that was to join in a discussion on something. Sure, join up and ask a question, but read the information available in General and Q&A first, as your question will have been asked before. Search is your friend here, become familiar with it.
Regarding when to post in development if you are not actually developing something, there is one occasion where it's acceptable. If you find a leak of a new ROM, which isn't already posted, and you verify it's legitimacy via either running it, or based on the source you obtained it from, then this is assisting in development, and should be posted in development. If you want to ask when a leak will be available use search first, then if not already in discussion, open a thread in general or Q&A.
If you have a problem flashing a ROM, this is NOT related to development. It's up to you to determine if it is specific to a particular ROM, and post useful information in that developer's existing thread for the ROM. If it happens on more than one ROM, and isn't a known issue (remember you should read several times more words than you post), then find out what you are doing wrong. Check guides written by others, try to repeat the problem and see if it happens every time. Something needs to be reproducible to be fixed effectively.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording)? Did you double check all the steps? Did you do a wipe or hard reset?
If you make a clear, concise, yet detailed post, you will find help forthcoming, and should get the problem sorted very quickly. If someone suggests you try something, report back on what happened, did it work etc. Then, next time someone has this issue and searches, they will find this and have a verified and tested solution.
So remember... before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can't answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?

Ten posts?
I tend to read and only contribute if I have something to say. Not in this case! Now I have to post just to post. Gee this is kinda fun. I think I will start posting meaningless drivel on more topics. Thanks ten post rule!
Ya post Hi in the introduction thread then Thank everyone who welcomed you. Hell, there's at least 2 or 3 post. Then check out the development (apps/games) and find something you want there and thank them for their hard work.
10 posts shouldn't take you more than a few days if you're active. Don't need them anyway as the question you're wanting to ask has already been asked.
10 post is annoying, but I understand the reason. Post.
This is the reason for the 10 post rule.

I think that makes sense. That way not just anyone can say I am a dev. I think that with the work your guys do it should have some prestige to it.
Dumb
The only reason I use XDA is as a root resource; this is just irritating that I have to post these ten msgs.

There needs to be a "What device do I get" section?

A thread dedicated to this has its problems.
First off, its huge. You cant look at someone that maybe has the same requirements as you and see what other people said about it. A typical example is a lot of people that want to switch to a Nexus phone. It would be easier to search for that in that section, see what people say and then not have to make the same thing again
Second, way too many posts. Similar to one but if the thread is on page 1000 and some posts a thread saying "What phone do I get?" later another 10 people post the same thing and we are on page 1001. Everything on page 1000 gets lost because noone looks thru them. You would have to double post.
A dedicated section where people can post threads on what device they are look for wouldnt clutter the forums and would let everyone express what they are looking for.
@riahc3, instead of making new threads, please consider posting your recommendations in this thread dedicated to that purpose.

I most certainly did.

You are redirecting me to a similar thread with the same problem; It is a bit more understandable as the staff should read every single suggestion and respond to them.
The device thread is stupid because it is by members for members. There is no obligation.
Basically you are answering my request for a solution to a thread with a problem by redirecting me to a thread with the same problem. Thats why I doubt you read my post.

Ah, I see your point. Touché, my good sir.
I just recommended you posting this request in that thread because as moderators and admins frequent that thread more than the About XDA forum as a whole, your opinion might get seen and considered more quickly than in this individual thread.

Firstly, there are 3 threads dedicated towards this subject. You're well aware of this because you've been told this, and have posted in one. And now you're complaining again, because your question, which you have already asked wasn't immediately after you posted it after the majority of people qualified to (re)answer your question are in bed, asleep.
Secondly, your "solution" of dedicating a forum for individual threads is hardly a solution. Your complaint is that posts get buried and never get answered. For one thing, this is not true. For another thing, if this is your complaint, what the heck makes you think that dozens of individual threads won't get buried? With the combined amount of posts in these threads, every day would create a new page or 2 in a subforum if they were made as individual threads. It's the same "problem", only multiplied and organized into a subforum rather than a few dedicated threads. Furthermore, it's very easy for me to read through new posts in a thread, but far more tedious to open multiple threads to read and perhaps reply individually, whereas in a single thread I can multi-quote and make several replies easily and in a tidy manner.
I think it's fine just the way it is. If anything, 3 is too many threads, since 2 of them are quite redundant, but since they're both in Q&A sections, (one General, one Android), I can see the reasoning for having one in each, if only to keep down on the clutter you insist you're entitled to making.
Wanna know what device to get? It is simple. Do your research and pic a device that fits what you need it to do. Flashing roms are not important, what devices works for others is not important. It is all up to you and what you plan on to do with the device. If you main plan is to flash roms with it then you might want to rethink the need for it.
There is no need for another forum.
If your not willing to read threw threads then you shouldn't be here in the first place. If you have an issue with said device and dont search and read threw to find the answer and then ask it anyway you are asking to be flamed to no end.
Remember this is a developers site.
