Know your Audience? - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

New article on Windows Phone dev blog:

I think we are not their audience ...
I read some people wrote nice feedbacks there!

I'ma let you finish Microsoft, going on and on about how you know best about things I want but the Andoid is going to be the best port ever on my HD2.

If you want to keep to a 4.3 inch screen size and likes Android, there is HTC supersonic on the way.

In all honesty it is the HTC Supersonic that probably is going to speed up the port to HD2.

First of all, nobody uses Windows Mobile, especially in America. Second of all XDA is a community of Windows Mobile users. Third, the end-user are consumers, not a specific community of consumers.
Who are these consumers? The communities all together.

wm7... the end?

Is winmo7 gonna be the end of winmo development here at xda? It's totally new, and its gonna be really hard to port it to existing winmo phones, and its a lot more locked down...
I was wondering the same thing after watching the press event video, which is why I came here to see reaction.
As long as there is a registry it hackable... I feel sorry for HTC or cannot customise their phones to have a unique selling point over other OEM's
It seems MS have built it for the sole purpose of cracking the "consumer" market. Looks incredibly pretty and i'm sure it will "work", however, whether it will be as appealing to the xda-dev community is another question!! A bit too early to say it's the end, but just from viewing the promotional videos, I can see my love for Android growing further!!
windows phone 7 has got me quite excited.. looking fwd to use it come december 2010.
I think you're right that it's just too early to tell. I hope you're right about the registry/hackable comment, though.
I am wondering would Microsoft be so stupid to create almost a totally new OS. If they do, i believe there will some sort of migrator to migrate apps to the new os. However i am seriously disappointed if they decide to remove mutiltask.
6.5.3 will remain alive and well for enterprise and developing markets, so even if we can't port winmo 7 there will still be updates to 6.5. Either way, MS has pretty much destroyed new app development for 6.5, as many of the major players will probably wait to develop exclusively for 7. I'm definately excited about 7 though; in the meantime it looks like android will be your friend if your looking for apps.
I think it will be a new beginning. However, the new SDK will likely be based on WPF or Silverlight, so the .NET knowledge of the current developers can be applied (however, WPF has IMHO a steep learning curve) and some code can be transferred. Game development will likely be based on XNA (you can already create Zune XNA games).
The big question for me is: Is publishing/installation of new applications as easy as it is currently the case? The worst case scenario would be a mandatory marketplace and you have to pay a fee to get your application added. However, I think that Microsoft will be going a developer-friendly way, because the third party applications will make or brake the OS.

That's exactly what's happening...
i just hope, that the multi billion dollar companies, make everything in the phone work the way it has to, and not wait till some regular people on this forum turn the phone into a good device.. seriously, i buy a WM knowing that its crap, just cause i know that here on XDA i can fix it and make it how i want it...
I just hope m$ has not gone the apple way blocking all development !
that will be a really really sad day on XDA.
Too early to say.
First few leaks should arrive some months hence.

I think you didn't paid attention to what was said in the conference.
They said, on top OEM's can customize it to add their experience to it. So HTC and other can customize it, but not to the extend of WM 6.5's case. That's because to give a consistent experience to us ( users ).
Please don't get into conclusion's without understanding what was said.

no dev's have even gotten their hands on this yet. How the heck would you know what's possible with is and what's not?
Well, it is new, Microsoft stated that it has more restrictions, and its pretty much a brand new os, because microsoft also stated that its built from the ground up, therefore its like porting android to a winmo phone. It has very little of its older winmo roots.

I totally agree with u the reason i bought my htc fuze and sold my nokia phone was because i love how cuztomizeable wm is and even if they become like apple there is always android
But wasnt there supposed to be an OEM version of Windows Mobile 7 that could be customized by third party's such as HTC? From what I saw of the press coverage, we were just seeing the "interface" much like titanium and Touchflo.....but who knows....

@Microsoft, WHY!!!???! if i wanted an consumer OS, i would of purchased an iBrick
Why not kill 6.6, make 6.9 with the winmo 7 kernal and code in some .NET support and let HTC work it's magic

for a long time, the older phones (wizard old) have been able to run the newest versions (6.5.3). i think this is gonna end development on those old phones. hopefully we will get it to run on the new phones like the hd2

Windows phone 7 - FAQ (please read first)

I have created a small FAQ to address some common WP7 related questions, a little attempt to try to stop people from asking same questions over and over again. Maybe the moderators can put it as sticky?
Q: Can I run Windows phone 7 on my HD2?
A: No you can't! Microsoft have told multiple times that there won't be an upgrade for HD2.
Q: I have seen screenshots of HD2 running WP7, is it possible to run WP7 on my HD2?
A: This might have been a fake picture. And even if it's real there will be no ugprade coming from Microsoft.
Q: But on my HD2 box it's written I'll receive free upgrade to WP7!
A: Microsoft are writing drivers for WP7 devices so it depends on Microsoft and not on HDC. Microsoft said the HD2 won't run it!
Q: But the HD2 meets the minimum hardware requirements, can I run WP7 on it?
A: It's decided by Microsoft, it will NOT run!
Q: Recently a ROM of WP7 was leaked can you give me step by step instructions to put it on my phone?
A: Nothing was leaked. The only thing that happened is that someone extracted the emulator image from the new Windows phone SDK.
Q: So what? Can I run it on my phone now?
A: No!
Q: I downloaded the leaked ROM but I don't know how to run it!
A: There's no leaked ROM. Download the Windows phone SDK and run the emulator from your Visual Studio project.
Q: Now that we have the leaked ROM can I cook it on my Touch pro 2?
A: No!
Q: Can I simply put the leaked ROM in my kitchen with a little hacks here and there and run WP7?
A: There's no leaked ROM. And the emulator image is based on x86 CPU. Your device runs an ARM CPU.
Q: I seen the file structure is the same like in my kitchen. Give me step by step instructions to cook a WP7 ROM for my device!
A: No it's not possible!
Q: If we have a real WP7 device and extract the ROM can the great developers at XDA please out it on my HP IPAQ?
A: WP7 is based on a new kernel and you don't have WP7 drivers for your device. It won't be possible to run WP7 on any older device.
Q: But I have bought a brand new HD2 and they said WP7 upgrade is free!
A: If you don't have the WP7 drivers for HD2 then it's not possible at all!
Q: But the hackers at XDA can still do it?
A: Probably not!
Q: That sucks! I'll switch to Android.
A: Have a nice day, goodbye!
Q: But I have bought a brand new HD2 and they said WP7 upgrade is free!

A: You will probably get a new WP7 device either free or discounted.
LOL @ half the FAQ being HD2 owners
Well it can't be taken seriously enough to be a sticky if it's an FAQ for idiots. Half the questions about an HD2 and the other half about a leaked ROM? It's humorous, but non-thick-headed people might have real actual questions about 7.
The picture was fake, not probably fake.. and that's not even necessary to say since the answer to the first question was NO.
Funny post though
Q: Can I run Windows phone 7 on my HD2?
There is no real information about upgrading the HTC HD2 at the moment. Rumors and the whole information over 60% - 80% is not real about WM7 on HTCH D2. The HTC can not disappoint so many customers because they will lose them as a result to lose million of money. The HTC will take the case very seriously. And from the other hand HTC and Microsoft have very good dealings they can't "destroy" this dealing for a WM Upgrade! Think about it.......
Q: I have seen screenshots of HD2 running WP7, is it possible to run WP7 on my HD2?
At the moment no.Maybe fake or early Beta Versions for HTC Corporations Beta Testers-Programmers......One God knows!
Q: But the HD2 meets the minimum hardware requirements, can I run WP7 on it?
The HTC HD2 hasn't any minimum hardware requirements the ONLY minimum hardware is graphic processor nothings else! (except the Microsoft decisions for 3 buttons etc..... ) The WM7 can't switch to no Graphics Mode from the settings (i just thought!) ??? We don't know!!!
Q: That sucks! I'll switch to Android.
Hey calm down!! You don't know if the information about upgrade will available for Nowadays HTC devices
Q: The above questions are really vague???
Yes with possibility up to 60%-70% the information are really vague.
Q: But on my HD2 box it's written I'll receive free upgrade to WP7!
Your answer is right at least 60%. If theres any disagreement between Microsoft and HTC. HTC would produce only Android phones no Wphones.
Q: But the hackers at XDA can still do it?
The problem always have a solution most of time. Maybe not hackers at XDA can't do it but another hackers can do it...... vague that!!

A better answer to that might be to point out that the HD2 doesn't meet the minimum hardware requirements.
It doesn't have a search button. Arguably it doesn't have a dedicated power button. It doesn't have a hardware camera button. It has only half a gigabyte of onboard flash, when the minimum amount needed is 8GB. It has an SD card reader which is banned on WP7S devices. There are also question-marks over whether it has the necessary "hardware scaler" (which apparently is distinct from the GPU) and, more seriously, whether its touch-screen is capable of registering the required four independent points of contact or only two.

Yes, it doesn't meet the minimum requirements, but people keep saying it does.
I'm not an owner of a HD2 device but even if I had one I wouldn't be so sissy about it. It's a WM 6.5 device and that's it. WP7 is a completely new chapter! It's meant to be a new OS and not only an update. And even if we already figured out what the kernel and OS structure is still somewhat similar from what we have now..... it doesn't change a thing!
Today I read the emulator is unlocked. Great! But in the next post I had to read the same nonsene again "Can I put it on my device now?"
GRRRRRRMMMMM!!!!
Why don't they just GET IT????
To be fair, another very frequently asked question is:
Q: lolz, why u wnt WP7S on HD2, it sux0rs, u r all idiots, no wun eva sed HD2 wud have WP7 n e way why don you all just sht up?!?!?! lolz
or words to that effect. The answer would be something like:
Some people feel that HTC implied that there would be a WP7 upgrade for the HD2, and that HTC has broken its promises. Most people, however, are more annoyed about the impact of the WP7 announcement on WM6.x.
When we bought our HD2's just a couple of months ago, no one could have guessed that WP7 would not be backwards-compatible with WM6.x - in other words that no WM6.x application would run on WP7. The effect of this is that, from the moment of the announcement, W6.x became a dead platform as far as commercial software development is concerned. Of course, hobbyist development will continue; but there is no longer any good reason for commercial software houses to produce new products or updates for WM6.x; instead they will jump straight to WP7S.
We are already seeing this with a number of major companies, for example Skype, Adobe (who have cancelled their FlashPlayer project for WM6.x) and even Microsoft (who have have recently announced a new version of Silverlight for the platform Symbian, but decided not to do so for Windows Mobile).
HTC must have known this would happen at the time the HD2 first went on sale, but conveniently neglected to mention it to anyone, which has made a lot of people angry. A free upgrade to WP7S might have gone some way towards compensating.

Very good all these, but Microsoft didn't ask HD2 owners if they want to run series 7 at them devices
Me and meny other owners we say NO, WE DIDN'T LIKE SERIES 7
We prefer our Leo like it is, with windows 6.5 or 6.5.3 and the HTC Sense which it is match more practical than the blue doors of series 7 and has better graphics.
We prefer to have copy paste, multi tasking, unlocked os, so as to put anything we want.
I had iPhone 3g and 3Gs before. I come back at WM because of these stupid restrictions, which they are only to make as to buy stupid apps from them stores.
If I must accept something like that, I prefer to original, I mean apple
MS the last years lost the most of the smartphone users. Only powers users continue with WM because of HTC no because Microsoft.
With series 7, they open the door for us also.
We are not at the them target plan, but they are not also at our plan.
The new users which they will come at the smartphones, they will have to choice between a new windows os and a famous iPhone os which after 3 years experience and millions sales will be better.
What you thing they will choice?
Microsoft made a big mistake. If they had an other way can win very easy all the disappointment iPhone and droid users, and after that the most of the new users which they will follow the new wave.
We will see after some months who is right.
Windows 7 --> EVO 4G
Forgive me for my ignorance on the issue. Based on the info posted here, I understand that one of the impediments to WP7-->HD2 is the lack of WP7 drivers for the HD2.
Then, is it safe to say that WP7-->EVO 4G will be in the same boat? Or will it be even worse off? Does it matter that the EVO 4G is an Android phone? Will that make it any harder to install WP7 on that device? Or would it present the exact same difficulties as installing WP7 on the HD2?

windows phone 7 for tp2?

i was just wondering if there is a way to cook a ROM for the sprint touch pro.
thank you
It's way to early to ask, so the answer for now would be a "no".
Wow another TP2 WP7 question ? OMG this is only the 500th...or should I say 10,000th.....

Sure but the Touch Pro2 is only running at 528mhz meaning it only has half the minimum processor speed for WP7 so it probably won't run very well even if it were possible. I'd much rather have it on a device running a snapdragon.
I'd be OK with slow as long as it's stable.
Only if the main menu, and Zune integration is there, it's more than enough. I don't need the games, or the eyecandy.
Almost no chance. Unless you find a build of WP7 floating around that's compiled in ARMv6 or less or somehow convince your TP2 to learn a new instruction set.
You can get a Win 7 Phone theme from XDA to mimic the UI. Thats all.

Windows Phone Seven port?

Hi, this is more of a opinion question than a 'question' question. Hopefully the great devs in the forum see this and find a way to port it. Please vote in the poll and if you have an opinion to say please write them. Just respect other members. Your opinions such as "why would you want a port?" Aren't really Nessecary.
Thanks
Most of your options don't make "sense", so I can't vote!
Whilst it may be possible to port WP7 to the Desire hardware, your first two poll options are to port WP7 to Android which is nonsensical!
Personally, from what I've seen of WP7 so far, there is nothing that makes me want to move away from Android at present, but that doesn't preclude it happening in the future. However, if I did want to move to WP7, I'd almost certainly buy a phone dedicated to it rather than attempt to cobble together something on an Android phone.
Regards,
Dave

even if it was possible, which it's NOT, none of the developers here would do it as its ILLEGAL, we dont own a LICENCE for wp7, it would be no diffrent to distributing PIRATE copy's of windows 7....
indeed, most of us here bought an android device because we wanted to customise our phones or because we got tired and annoyed with other OSes(especially WM, urg...!{yeah, I know I have the HD2, it pisses me off...=.="'}), but if there are any developers porting WP7, I'd like to see it emulated only.
Oh, I didn't know it was illegal. Guess no one would port it then. But maybe a good emulator would be nice. I wish I had bought a HD2 now...
Given that Windows Phone 7 is not Windows Mobile, it would probably technically be illegal to run it on an HD2 too, though since you'd have effectively paid some kind of licence fee to MS, they would be more likely to turn a blind eye I guess!
It's by no means certain that it would be any easier though!

Dave

that would be down to microsofts discretion, previously they havent made much of an issue out of us porting newer versions of windows mobile to, older windows mobile devices, and imo i dont think they would start now, ie porting wp7 to the HD2 ect.... but i cant see them sitting back and letting people port wp7 to a device with no microsoft licence all together. they didnt get to be the biggest company in the world by letting things like that slide
Why would you want to anyway?
Personally I don't even like the look of WP7 interface. Some nice features but it just looks a bit naff to me!

There was an article last week about a Mango custom ROM for the HD7, I think. In any case, it's based on the news writers and which forums they browse around in. I think only egzthunder1 is still a WM user.
i think you just have to wait. As more people turn to wp7 you'll hear more and more news about it. Also the reason android is mentioned so much is because most the phones run android and you also get a lot of news about the phone itself rather than the os.

I really dont understand this lack of interest about WP7 as I have been playing with Mango for awhile and think that is so much better than Android.

This is a disgrace for WP7 members. We really have to dig if we want to find WP7 news.
Well we still have wpcentral.
I really hope WP7 can take off. I like Android but WP7 is prettier and snappier. If there comes a time when my must-have .apks have an equivalent or superior on WP7 I'll totally switch. Those must-have .apks used to be .cabs and that's what held me onto WinMo for so long. I was waiting forever for garmin to sell me an android app but instead they just bought navigon... Works for me...
Like i was stated a couple months ago, we go where the news is. I have not seen many suggested news in the lines of WinMo7 since this thread was originally started. Once again, if you see something news worthy, please let us know so we can get on top of it. We are a small group and do not always catch things immediately.
Bingo, what TRM said is absolutely true. On top of that, most writers use Android and unfortunately, it is very hard to keep tabs or even review apps when you don't even have a device to test things on.
I just got a WP7.5 device, so we may start seeing more of this in the Portal...
Coupled with the fact that the portal guys work really hard to find new, relevant content.
And in this day and age, that is primarily Android content, based on marketshare and usage levels.
Perhaps wp7 will pick up a bit, but it's still not gaining much ground
If you guys want something on the Portal, Suggest It

As much as I try it just dont get published.
Come on guys, as I said in a previous post I am sure you are doing your best but If you look to the Portal it is all about Android, there is nothing about windows phone.
Custom Roms, apps, tricks and device root and device reviews are only about Android. If there is a first custom rom for an Android device this is almost instantly reviewed, if there is a new outstanding app for Android it is posted immediatly, and so on...
Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against Android or Android Members, in fact I have an Asus device with Android too, but when was the last time something about windows phone was posted in the Portal?
We are a few Windows Phone fans here but we were Thousands back in the WM6.5 good old days so I think we deserve some attention too from the news writers.
Again, please dont take these personnal statements as an attack, that is not my intention. But, as a Windows Phone lover I feel sorry to see WP7 being left behind by this community that I love so much.
Thanks

Perhaps people are betting on the wrong horse. It is predicted that there will be more windowsphone devices in 2016 then iphones. This is calculated by analists of IDC. Other analists confirms this evolution. The growth of android will stop soon too.
I think that the intrest in windowsphone will grow with the growing part of windowsphone in the market. So I am not worried at all. It will only be better.
Personally I don't like android at all (nor Iphone).

Hi dotcompt,
Thanks for the heads up. You bring up a very valid point, and I will make an effort to address this. While we do indeed have more Android users here, and thus more Android development, WP7 is a fantastic OS that should not be ignored. I apologize for the inconvenience.
To alleviate it, would you be so kind as to PM me personally when you have content suggestions? I would gladly publish any story about WP7 as long as it's relevant development work. And on that note, thank you much for contributing to the community with your development efforts.
Will
