Okay sorry such a seemingly simple question has to be asked when there's hundred of threads all about this phone. I've had it for a year and a half now, and I've loved it without any mods (cause I didnt know there were any for free), but now its slooooowwww.
Gets frozen on any MMS, keys stop responding often, free mem is constantly below 1mb, cant delete SMS because as soon as I restart the phone, they're back.
SO, essentially, I see there's a TON of awesome stuff to upgrade too. I really cant believe Ive been so oblivious heh. Where do I start. I want one of these ROMs. One where I can backup all texts, then delete a year and a half worth. One where the interface is obviously different. One where all my shh doesn't constantly freeze If there's a "Start fresh" thread on here, I missed it. I'm hoping I can either be told, or directed to where I can get a step by step on upgrading the phone. Unlocking (if necessary), installing, etc.. I have WM6, nothing upgraded at all. I want all the junk off this phone. If I can get a start on what to do, I'm sure I can go from there with configuring.
I dont want to buy a new PDA since Im having a baby, so any help at this point is going to be awesome. Thanks!
plzzzzzzzzzzzz, if theres a thread im missing that can start my getting 6.1 and how, id love to find it and read for myself
you have some reading and searching to do regarding the backing up of texts and all that stuff...it can be done and the answers are somewhere on this forum. you just need to use search to find it.
as far as starting over...you sound new to this so until you read all the stickies at the top of this forum...id go with option 2
FIRST THINGS FIRST. SINCE APPARENTLY YOU MISSED EVERY POST (ALL THE ONES LABELED STICKY) ON THE FIRST PAGE. READ THIS BEFORE GOING FURTHER SO YOU DONT HURT YOUR PHONE OR YOURSELF.
option 1. - Upgrade the rom to one of the 6.1 versions. you can find them with detailed instructions in the stickies. these roms are flat out better than the windows mobile 5 or 6 that you are most likely running. but please read about them and their installation before attempting the upgrade. also read ALL of the stickies to avoid us ganging up on you and and beating you like a hobo for asking "Why am I getting Error: 270".
option 2. - just hit the clear storage button (start > accesories > clear storage) and it will wipe out anything you have saved or installed to the phone and it will be just like when you took it out of the box. this will get rid of your memory issue.
as far as low memory....do you have a ton of stuff installed? did you save every text over the last year and a half?
edit: i cant belive im doing this...but here are some places to start.
Kavanas 6.1 ROM
Rickwyatts version of Kavanas 6.1 ROM
Here is for when you want to come on here and post "ERROR 270! HELP!!!"
Then when you get past that you will come on here and go "MY KEYBOARD IS ALL MESSED UP". for that you are gonna wanna click here --> Keyboard Fix
Once you get passed there... you will definitely come back to say "hey guys! great rom! but i cant send a text, mms or get to the net! zomg my life suck!!!!" click here when that happens and read what it says in green.
i cant belive i just took away all your fun in searching...you musta caught me on a good night...
without beartard here im getting weak!
by the way..all those links i posted ARE THE FIRST THINGS AT THE TOP OF THIS FORUM. READ ALL THE POSTS THAT SAY "STICKY" NEXT TO THEM

how could you possibly miss every post on the first page of this forum?
between the time of your first post and second post you could have found all those stickies and had the phone upgraded....did you really try hard to find the answers? c'mon you can tell me...im not gonna get mad..i already gave the answers to ya.
btw...im not trying to belittle you..think of it as a hazing. a lot of people have put work into making that Excalibur Wiki and the mods have done a great job of making the most common issues STICKIES. when people come on after joining a day ago and have 2 post to their name after owning the phone for a year and a half....then ask many things, all of which have been answered many many dozens of times... it just annoys me. mods spend time to make the stickies of the important things...and people like you dont even bother looking. you spent 2 hours waiting for someone to guide you...when you could have read everything in that time...anyways..im not bashing...just sayin in the future, do some reading or use the search button that i linked above before making a new post like this and looking (to the normal lurkers) silly. anyways. goodluck
Simply a beautiful step-by-step "manual" if you will.

Exactly what I was thinking, as I was reading this thread I was thinking to myself that this should be a "sticky" itself for all the newbies...
I second you on the sticky. It can also be posted on the wiki, I mean I went there to learn how to upgrade my phone, more people should.

Just to answer, yeah I got about 80k texts on here. Rad, eh
rad is an understatement....you are the coolest mother f'er ive ever run across.
Hey everybody,
New user here, I'm on the forum for about 3 day now and i reached page 40 on aplications and themes, i have to say there are some cool stuff your posting here.
I'm also a new user of WM with the HD as my starter's kit (yah I like to complicate my life) and I reached the conclusion..it's windows! it's suposed to be lagqy, get stuck and have al sorts of annoying problems to be fix. I was bumed out for a couple of weeks thinking I should have pick the I-phone but when I saw the commercial for I-phoneS (WOW look what does it DOOOO, IT RECORDS VIDEOS WOW!!!!! IT COPY-PASTE's WOOWW!!! ) I changed my mind, and realized that the HD kicks I-Ps's Ass any time . I'm still not happy about the laggy-nes, as I read in some posts if I flush the ROM and get another one it can get even 20 times faster...is it true? Cuz I was looking at Laurentius26's L26_THD V3.55_WWE_Ultimate [Full Rhodium] and I dont know what to do, if i flush the stock OS do i lose my waranty?
Also it took some time to undestand that manila stuff and why some theme work and some dont(or i think i understand), on my device I have manila 2.0(i think ). Oh, I found one time on another site(cant remember witch one) a theme that i liked very much but for HTC TOUCH, it was called Scrap Paper, does anyone have it for HD or know what I'm talking about.
Oh, and I remember, for a 900$ phone (as it is in my country), they didn't finde a small spot for a flash?! And the headphones are very miserable and low buget (my opinion)! Very desapointed about these 2 things!!! wow I shure wrote a lot, hope you can help me with the rom flashing and the scrap paper theme....sorry if i borde you ..won't happen again
hey there.im also quite new to this forum and this is also my first time using wm.ive had my HD for around four months now.its hard for a newbie to find things anyway it was for me.if ur wondering about fashing check out flashing for dummies in rom development http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377 it helped me.and yea u must be prepared to read a lot cos most problems are not new and some one has posted it some where.and if im not wrong the best way is to use the search
10x 4 the tip Sliv
As stated before most issues have been posted before so as long as you search you should be alright. Otherwise PM me and I'll steer you in right direction. Link provided above by sliv for the 'Dummies guide to flashing' is where you shoud post any further queries in flashing.
Try and keep each forum on topic, i.e. this forum is just for themes, applications and software. Any queries on ROM development or rom specific questions/amswers should be posted/found here. If you have a cooked rom on your device you do void warranty, but stock rom can always be flashed back. I suggest you read though thread link provided and the wiki for further info.
Just did a quick search for theme 'scrap paper' and got no results, so not sure its available. However if you ask someone politely who creates themes (lots of theme threads around) they may surprise you and make it . Obviously this depends on who you ask and how nice you ask them...LOL
Hope all this helps
Ta
Rick
do you mean Zitouns Paper theme ?

Hi,
I'm still running the OEM WM6.1 which came with my TP2. I'm interested in installing an updated version (custom?), but is a bit confused at this stage. What's the difference between a ROM, Splash and Radio? Also, my TP2 has an IMEI number, does that mean it is a GSM device and not a CDMA device?
I'm really worried about bricking it...
Thanks in advance!
Also, what is Sense, Manilla, etc.?
RTFM :~D
When someone mentions their rom, they usually mean their operating system...for instance, a cooked rom, would be a modified WinMo 6.x
A radio rom (not to be confuzzled with an FM radio) is what picks up your telephone signals.
A splash is the opening screen when you first boot your device...on mine it would be T-mo then WinMo...this can be modified, as there are usually 3 initial screens, my first screen is custom made by me (there is a great tutorial on doing that), the second is an animated gif which currently is T-mo and I will eventually change, the third is WinMo which I will also eventually change once I find images I like enough. Most cooks use either their own splash or just generic ones from HTC/WinMo. The splash is just a matter of personal taste...some people don't care if it is their carrier branding/HTC/WinMo, others want it very personal. Changing the splash usually won't have any effect on your rom other than cosmetic...you do not see the splash unless you are booting the device.
I would very strongly urge you to read every and all stickies/wiki's posted in the Rhodium section of xda. Once you have read every post in each of the above mentioned stickies/wiki's, read them again...if you don't want a brick, then educating yourself is the best way. Believe it or not, many if not all of your questions can be answered with a little reading and some searching. There is in fact an excellent tutorial to read before flashing to a new rom...
Thank you!
So a Radio ROM flash is not really a good idea if there is nothing wrong? I'm getting signal problems, could it be the Radio ROM?
I'm reading as much as possible, I really do not want to get it wrong.
If you have to ask these questions then I'd advise you to leave the whole subject well alone. The chances of you getting in a mess are much increased by your basic lack of understanding and unless you're having SERIOUS problems with your phone as it is I don't think it's wise for you to get involved.
Analogy time :
Almost all of my computers at home run Linux and I wouldn't have it any other way. But there's no way I'd advise my mum to even think about it at the moment because she still doesn't like land lines with buttons.
If you are having SERIOUS problems with reception then first of all I'd try and see whether a different phone on the same network has problems too. It could well be the network coverage where you are. If it doesn't then read the ROM section CAREFULLY. All the information you need is there and there should be no need to ask questions if you fully understand what is written. If you don't the don't !
Also I would advise that this is posted in the wrong section and should be in the ROM section

Thanks, I get what you are saying...but, I'm a quick learner and asked the questions because I'm researching it, so know everything before I try.
Check here for all you need to know.
Ok. this is the second Evo i got. 2 days ago i got my first one. tried rooting it. got lost n eveyrthing. camera stopped working idk y, took it bak, swapped me to a new one. just got the new one today, running 2.2 obviously.
Now can someone post up exactly which ones i should do to root and can someone point me in the right direction to put the Cyanogenmod 6.1 experimental on?
As much as I can't stand the people who say, "Use the Search Tool!" and then brush you off, I've got to say that after reading your post I can somewhat sympathize with them.
Your question(s) have been answered ad nauseum across these boards and a very quick search could provide the resources you are looking for far quicker than it takes to write a post and wait for an answer. I'm sure you can imagine what these boards would look like if every one of the thousands of people with the same questions as you simply posted them as you did rather than searching and reading. As the single best source for all things android and possibly the largest, it would be 90% posts just like yours and 10% of everything else. It is simply impossible and unreasonable to expect anything different.
But, I digress...
In regards to rooting the EVO... Again, it would be redundant for me or anyone else for that matter to give you step by step instructions since the answers are freely and easily available in the "Android Development" section of the EVO subforum. That said, here are two great places to start:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496
The above two links will take you directly to the two threads representing the two different root methods. In sum, the top one is the easiest and the second one is more involved but the end result as far as the phone is concerned is identical. Lots of folks recommend the harder method simply because of the value in what you learn in the process. That said, between those two threads I think you will find all the answers you are looking for and more.
honestly, in the past 5 minutes on the first 2 pages i have seen about 3 different threads titled [GUIDE] and something to do with rooting the evo... i dont think finding a guide should be too difficult for anybody
I'm wondering what the excuse is going to be on next exchange
Make sure you read it through this time.
I purchased my EVO last week and finally found the courage to follow the thread "[TOOL][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF" (created by zikronix). By carefully reading the thread's instructions and all of the Q&A's that followed, I successfully rooted my phone with little difficulty. I would caution, however, that flashing your WIMAX radio can result in your EVO not being able to pick up a 4G signal.
I could be doing something wrong or perhaps I simply haven't yet found an easy fix. All I know is that I'm enjoying my rooted EVO. As for the lost 4G capabilities, I'm not digging that so much. If I'd been aware of the risk of ruining my WIMAX radio, then I probably would have done a bit more research (after days and days of the research that I'd already done) in order to avoid the issue.
I'm not the only person who's encountered the broken WIMAX issue. A number of people have complained about it and there doesn't appear to be any reliable fix.
My intent is not to scare you away from rooting your EVO. I only wish to serve as a cautionary tale.
yea id say a bigger issue is that there may be too many guides... 2 clicks to root, 1 click to root, etc... its a little redundant

Also, you most likely have HW004. That is why your camera is NOT working after you flash any custom rom.

lol THANK YOU! one says intall HTC sync, other says uninstall it, one says use unrevoked 3.21, other says it doesnt work on 2.2. cmon yo. lol make a simple guide line like, (For New Evos(2.2))(Manually Root Process). if its automated, it either works on Win7 or Xp or Mac, or u just dont have Java Version or .net version. etc. i liked it when u just used CMD for eveyrthing. manually inputting the codes and stuff. dat seemd to never fail.
but on the other people who helped. thanks alot. i know too manyy guides get confusing, and if u recommened it, ill take it and give a wack at it. i have hardware version 003 btw to the other guy and never even got to root, neither the less flash a room lol.
thanks again!

The reason why there are multiple root guides is because they all came out at different times for different software versions. Sure there are a bunch for 2.2 but there have already been a couple updates since we got Froyo. You need to check your software version and use the root method that works for it. I'm not on a Sense ROM but I'm pretty sure the path to check is menu > settings > about phone > software information. Considering that you have a new 003 you are probably on 3.29.651.5 and if that's the case I recommend using the Unrevoked 3.21 method to root.

3.30.651.2 to be exact. anyone on this thread, if it dont work to root, or whatever, please lemme know.
Long time lurker, Used to have a screen name here but hadn't been on in a while and couldn't remember what address I used then. So starting over.
My main goal of this thread is to get information together for Cricket users to help set their phones up more functional and full. Get tips and advice in one place to help others with problems and solutions for those of us running cricket flashed L900s. I plan to add more later just wanted to get something started to motivate me to post information I have come across and personal experiences playing with my GN2 with stock apps and replacements, and new roms. Ive lost my cricket flash a few times now and believe its working better now than when I first had it flashed.... Don't judge me, I was in a bind and needed a phone, didn't have web access or time to research anything, so yes I paid for the initial flash. I tend to research the crap out of things like this before I attempt it on my own, have done it since my original Hero, Like I said I will add to this later with information on cricket specific problems and solutions. If anyone has their own experience feel free to post.
There's already a flashing tutorial/thread made by Alpineman. I think it's mostly about flashing to boost but everything in it can be applied to Cricket since in the end it's nearly the same process.
Sent from my SPH-L900. Please hit the thanks button if I helped you out!
