Hi,
in about two weeks i'll be travelling to London.
As i hopefully get my Desire this week, i've wondered if there was a way to get any satellite maps (or even google maps) to work offline.
Connecting to the internet would be pretty expensive (roaming), so it would be great if i could download the City Map for London on my device and then just use it offline.
Does Google Maps currently offers a possibility to save the cached data? Or are there any good Apps for that?
What's with google navigator? Possible to download maps there?
Thanks in advance
fooXeh
I've never tried (Still waiting for my desire) but i was already checking for some handy apps to do this and found MapDroyd. Just google it (i can't post urls)
Seems it's exactly what u need but maybe there are others apps out there
Thanks,
just looked at Mapdroyd, looks nice.
Not as good as a Offline Google Maps but should do the thing.
Any other suggestions?
If you download the patch to let you use google nav, (search this forum) it will save the route to your phone, so you dont require data.
This clearly only works if you dont re-route.

Look at either Sygic or Co-pilot. Also see the threads that mention them in the Themes and Apps folder. I use Sygic and like it a lot.
I don't need a full navigation software, just want to browse the Satellite map for underground stations, sightseeing stuff and so on.
I'd never dare to drive a car in England, you guys drive on the wrong side of the street
I will wait for this:
http://aura.sygic.com/
3D map ftw!
It is the next product from Sygic.
In the meantime, probably I will buy Co-Pilot, cheaper

Still, those are all full navigation softwares.
Any free, non-navigation alternatives besides MapDroyd?
I did read somewhere recently on some official Google forum a thread about offline use of Google Maps. A Google employee posted a response along the lines of Google being aware of this requirement amongst the user community and something might be in the works. But not to hold our breaths.
Edit: Found it:

Look half way down the page at the "Best Answer" from Thom dated 3rd February 2010, which says:

Hi all,
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. The reason I haven't replied directly to this thread is that I and my forum colleagues don't comment on the future availability or functionality for any Google products, including Navigation. That said, the development team and I are very, very aware of the desire to have an "offline" mode for Google Maps Navigation. We're currently exploring options about how to provide a better experience when in limited or no data coverage areas, so please look for changes to Navigation in the future. Thanks for understanding.
Best,
Tom

I did a quick google search for you and found this.
http://www.nutiteq.com/
It does offline viewing of streetview maps and wont break the bank at 2 euros.
looks nice, nicer than mapdroyd, thx
Is there any free offline maps for HTC Desire?
try Mapdroyd
Thanks for your help
It does not have turn-by-turn navigation. Is there any offline turn-by-turn navigation for Ontario, Canada.
Try Motonav. Good GPS program.
Copilot is nice, although is paid app with full functional gps navigation
try navigon
All of these are paid apps. Can't i have something free?
Nokia offers OFFLINE OVI Maps how come Andriod does not have something like that.

There is. You can use Google Navigation. If you are not in US or UK (or whatever country that is available) you can use "Google Maps brut". You can cache your maps to use them offline.
search for NavDroyd. It costs €5 and works with OpenStreetMap.
Works pretty good.

Afaik it only caches the ones you have loaded before, i.e. you can't use it for navigating in areas you have never been before...which is kinda the reason why you'd need navigation in the first place

Nokia offers free offline maps because (a) they are very much playing catch up with Android these days, and (b) purchased Navteq for $8 Billion which means that the maps they are giving away are their own property.
As I understand it, Google "owns" their maps for the US, but have to license maps for most of the rest of the world. You can see this if you zoom into a US map on Google Maps - it will say the map is (c) Google. If you do this on a UK map, it will say (c) Teleatlas.
In order for Google to make navigation available legally, in territories outside the US, they have to come to an agreement with the owners of the maps, which presumably involves money changing hands. Clearly they have done this with Teleatlas as the UK now gets Navigation, whereas other regions are having to rely on Brut Maps (which is a non-Google sanctioned hack).
At the end of day, the free offline OVI maps is very much a unique selling point for Nokia, and will likely remain so until Google and/or others purchase their own map data.
Regards,
Dave
Let me clear one thing .. I am currently in Canada. So I guess, legally i am in the territory whose maps are copyrighted by Google.
Now back to the offline maps. I will check the brut maps for google. Thanks
I was under the impression that Google Nav was available in Canada!
See here.

IMO you are not going to find one - at least not one of acceptable quality.
Google and Nokia have very, very different business models.
To Google, Android is just a mechanism through which they can serve up their services and thus their adverts, and so an fully offline solution just doesn't suit their business model.
Nokia on the other hand want to sell you phones, and given that they rather dropped the ball with Symbian (which is a fantastic OS, let down by a poor UI), they need to do something different to try and recapture some momentum.
Sorry, but what you are looking for just doesn't exist. The harsh reality is that if you want turn by turn navigation on Android that is both good quality and offline, you are going to have to pay for it. My suggestion would be Copilot because it is a great application, and it is very cheap for what it is.
Regards,
Dave
Today HTC announced the new service:
" HTC Sense adding pre-cached maps! No more waiting for maps when zooming or panning." So just wait. Think soon it will be available not only for announced HTC Desire Z anв Desire HD.

yeh i had....but not enough i guess..forgive me then
Google Navigation. Simply the best (of course, my opinion), it'll be perfect when they enable offline maps, but I don't know when the will.
Google navigation got me lost something mean yesterday.
Was trying to lead me up buss only roads, tram tracks all sorts.
After an hour lost I had to pull out my crusty tom tom which lead
Me the right way. Normally its fine but yesterday it really let me down.
I have been using Sygic Mobile Maps without any problems for a long time. Then upgraded to Sygic Aura. Also worked without any problems and now, recently upgraded Aura to the newest Sygic GPS Navigation 3.0, which works really really great on the SGS2. Everything is fast and smooth and runs just perfectly. I'm loving it ;-)
Why not try NavFree UK
"When it comes to free navigation apps on Android it’s hard to look beyond the awesome Google Maps. But one company, Navmii, is trying its darndest to convert you over to its feature rich NavFree UK software. This app has already been doing big numbers on the iPhone – more than 1.7 million downloads – and now its Android turn to enjoy its gratis sat nav skills.
Navmii is able to hawk this app for nada because the map data is based around the community based OpenStreetMap (OSM). This means the users can update the mappage themselves to build a more accurate picture and with over 300,000 map updates already made by iPhone users, it appears Navfree is fast approaching pro-quality.
Unlike Google Maps, NavFree doesn’t rely on a data connection for its map feed. The whole of the UK & Republic of Ireland as a 300MB file is downloaded straight to your phone so your route won’t be interrupted should a network signal be lost.
Elsewhere, the app is stocked with features you would expect from dedicated sat nav devices: turn-by-turn voice instructions, 3D map view, a re-routing facility and Point of Interest (POI) search, amongst others. NavFree also lets you share your position and route via SMS, email and the top dog social networking services Facebook and Twitter."
Its downloadable from Expansys website as of now but i cant get it to run on my S2 as it just hangs ?
wwwdotexpansysdotcom forward slash navfree
Sorry, as a newbie to this forum im unable to post a direct link!!
Aura works fine on my SGS2 as well. Well, live traffic is not working at all, but many people were bothering Sygic support about this problem and Sygic is looking into this issue.
Other than that I am also happy with it, updated maps, lot's of POI's.
I am not so sure about the quality of route planning.
Navigon always gives you 3 alternative routes for you to choose from and I have a feeling, it planned better, but they have Q32011 maps, in comparison to Q12011 maps for Sygic, which makes a big difference for Ireland.
Sygic also promises free map updates, nor Navigon or Copilot promise you that, in fact, Navigon says that they don't plan to update the maps in the close future...
Navfree gives me the same problem on SGS2 - it initially says Installing.... then blackscreens and drops out.
I have a problem with google maps navigation. (Apart from the hideous voice). It takes a few seconds to get a gps lock but if I miss a turning, route recalculation takes ages. Like minutes rather than seconds. Not a gps hardware issue as I also use igo and it locks & recalculates routes almost instantly. Strange.
Google navigation .If your country don't have google navigation activated. go her u ned root.
Hey guys ,im a new samsung user .I bougth galaxy s 2 in UK but im living in Turkey ,the problem which i faced is GPS problem it can finds satelites but no fixing any idea what i can do ? the software is last version KE7 need a help
Steel
Waze for free, TomTom for pay.
I have been using TomTom for years as a standalone car navigator, so I could not resist to buy it for my SGS2.
But before it was released for Android, I used Waze and I must say that it is very good, even if I prefer the professional look and content of TomTom.
Google Navigation when in my own country and have flat rate data plan
CoPilot Live Premium for off-line navigation when driving outside my country
Locus for off-line maps (free vector) when hiking, walking in nature and trying to find my way in big towns
Talk about necromania - digging up topics from 2011...
Anyway, my choice is NavFree (nav and voice directions for driving) and MapsWithMe (for walking around the cities). Both free, both offline.
I've actually have two questions. I want to use my S2 as navigation in my car. I've heard about free apps for offline navigation. Anyone know a name of one? Internet abroad costs tons of money but i'd like to be able to use my phone as navigation when i'm going on holiday as well.
Secondly, i want to buy a carholder, but i was wondering if it is bad for the phone to put it up to the window in the full sun for a couple hours :S. Or should i find a different spot out of the sun? And how close to a window does the phone need to be so it is able to receive the gps signal.
Thanks in advance

Try Brodit in car holder, mounted on Brodit ProClip. Check to see if ProClip for your car is suited for your use.
Thank you very much, my car actually has a thing like proclip installed and i can probably install it there. I'm just gonna test first if it has good signal on that spot.
Hello, I have phone for navigation attaching with sucction mount before tachometer. I do not need look on tachometer (i have ears) and there is phone perfectly preserved, perfectly visible (no sun reflextions) and in field of view. GPS signal is very goog in my peugeot in this position. Just an idea...

Hi,

+1 for Sygic. Best interface and map so far... I'm waiting for Tom Tom to get off their butts and finally release something for Android already. I normally use Tom Tom but would rather use it from my device instead of having 2 devices mounted on my dash.
Check out Google Maps Navigation!
Take a look at the new version of Google Maps Navigation.
It works really well. AND according to Google Maps you can
"pre cache" maps for the route you will be taking. (It's a "Beta" feature)
I haven't tried pre caching myself (I have a good dataplan! ) but it should work!? If anyone has tried this feature, please let the rest of us know!
I have tried to install Navigon (yes a cracked version, I'm a bad person) and it just will not work! (suit you right, you bad person!! ).
So I stick to Google Maps for now and it works fine for me!
If I have helped you, please push the thanks button!

Sygic is great but not usable in Balkans and some parts of eastern Europe (problem with Teleatlas map coverage). Use android navigation in those parts of Europe the only way is use cracked Igo My way because it is not possible purchase it legally, just alltogether with some devices. However it works great.

I've got a good data plan as well, but the main reason i need something else then google maps is for trips abroad. And the precache is super, but i want to be prepared for situations in which i get lost and of my route. I think google maps than has a problem.

copilot works fine for croatia and serbia, sucks for montenegro however. haven't been to other balkan states lately, so don't know about the rest of them.
The developers of apps like co pilot should be ashamed of themselves charging the amount of money they do for that app, more often than not ill pay for an app but you have you seen the price of this https://market.android.com/details?...rket.premiumeupan&feature=more_from_developer

Its ridiculous isnt it. Those prices just encourage people to use the pirated versions.
I am a total Noob/Newbie here, heck I don't even have my first Android device yet,(already Ordered one). I was wondering if you guys can help me w/ this. I'm looking for both PAID & Free (if theres is any) Offline GPS software for the Nexus 7 2013.
Have a look at Nokia's HERE Maps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.here.app.maps
Also MAPS.ME is highly regarded although doesn't yet have voice guidance https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapswithme.maps.pro
All maps can be downloaded for offline use.
I've used several GPS navigation apps that work offline. IMO, CoPilot is hands down THE BEST! Once installed you can choose which maps you want to download saving space. For example I live in Alabama, USA so I chose to download the USA southeastern region map. It has tons of great features. It's free to use but to get the full version it requires purchasing. I paid only a few dollars for the full version and it is well worth every last penny!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alk.copilot.mapviewer
HERE seems to be pretty good. One can also download specific states to save on space. NAVTEQ always made a good product.
Copilot or Sygic were the best ones last time I checked... Both are paid apps though... Worth the money though.

Copilot DOES have paid versions but it also has free one-region versions as well.

OsmAnd - used in Thailand, Taiwan and, more recently, through all the stops on a Baltic Cruise (Copenhagen, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Stockholm...). Works great to find where you are and minimal navigation. Based on OpenStreetMaps so always free and usually up to date. Make sure to download the regions prior to travel.
Best one is obviously sygic ( No doubt )
Best one is obviously sygic ( No doubt ) Ive been using it for years on my N4 and now on my N7 2013 .
The best offline navigation ever ( its paid and if you can get hold of a copy )
OsmAnd is Free app :

I keep it as Plan B
I have tried a few of these: Navigon, Sygic, Tomtom etc...
The only thing I never find is a GPS app which allow to talk and enter the address by voice
I mean what would be better than being able to control the GPS by voice
+1 for Here

Just used HERE for a week in Greece offline.
I just preloaded the map all my favourites online. Offline, it all worked flawlessly in Greece. :highfive:
I used to have to take an old N86 for offline navigation but HERE now does the job almost as well. :good:
iGO primo and newest version is best full offline GPS navigation software...NO doubt!!!
HERE by nokia is really good. I use it on my phone.
Another one for Here Maps - it is simple, accurate, free and fully offline once you have the maps you need. I used Sygic before which I disliked for its GUI and inaccurate maps for my region. Also been there with Waze and Google Maps - neither works as they should with Google being a prick and directing me to god knows where on some occasions and both of them lacking offline features.
I started with Navigon, but switched to Sygic, for which I am a beta tester now. It's not free, but it's very actively developed and maintained. They have discount offers every once in a while and it's a lifetime-license.
