Tilt2 stops checking for emails.. (Please help!) - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Ok, I've posted this on here before and on the AT&T forums, but it's still an issue even with trying different solutions. I currently have the Tilt 2, previously had the Samsung EPIX. I have two email accounts set up on my phone, SBC Global and hotmail (mainly for consistency testing). When using the default WM 6.5 MMS settings my phone will check for e-mails at the regular intervals that I set it to, however it will only UPDATE my phone randomly. Even if I was to do a send/receive it'll check for new messages, and then disconnect without updating my in box. I had this issue with my EPIX but figured it was my e-mail account but I've heard other people aren't having issues with it.
After some feedback I downloaded Seven to use as a push e-mail service on my phone. Most of the time it'll stay connected, but there are periods that it will not connect (has been down for 4 hours today so far) and only a soft reset will fix it. This usually fixes both connection types, but again for how long is not known.
I have tried setting my e-mail accounts up for POP3 and IMAP4. But as I can send/receive and get updated e-mails some times I don't think this is the issue.
Please help as I'm pulling my hair out with this!

have you changed your password recently ?
you could also try deleting the e-mail account on your phone and starting over !

I haven't changed my password for a long while now, and I know that's not it as it'll connect.
I've tried deleting and re-adding the email multiple times. I've even gone as far as hard resetting the phone.

Timeout-Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device

I have a couple of POP3 accounts on my O2 XDAIIs. I used to be able to download my email from ISP without problems.
Lately, when there is any email waiting, it will connect and try to download and pop up the following message "Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again."
The other POP3 accounts work fine, even with the same ISP, and this POP3 account used to work when I first got the unit. The POP3 account in question works fine from my Treo using the same SIM card (I have Cingular).
I searched all over the web and forums, I see many have the problem and some have not been able to resolve it. I tried:
1) Soft and Hard Reset
2) Deleting and reentering the account
3) Used the Sprite Mail cleanup utility (which basically cleans all emails and attachments)
4) Tried a registry key that had worked for some: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox, create new DWORD ForceOffSSL and give it a value of 1.
5) Checked with my ISP – they could not see any problem with the account and works with anything else but my O2 XDA IIs.
6) I tried the Flemail 2006 program (formerly WebIS) and it worled for email. But the program is so buggy and slow that I had to delete it. This tells me the problem is with the native pocket outlook.
If there is NO email, it will connect, check and disconnect with no error.
There is a timeout somewhere. The other accounts can connect and download without problems.
Has anybody else had this problem and does anybody have any suggestions?
No one else has had this problem? Any suggestions?
I know it is device specific as it works on the same GSM account on a Treo.
PPC6700 with same problem
I just purchased the PPC 6700 and I love the device itself, but I have had many problems with it after owning it for only 4 days.
1. Sprint failed to let me know that my phone had to be updated. Thanks! I only found out about this update after 1 hour of phone tech support trying to find out why my phone randomly went into flight mode. What a pain in the ***.
2. I have my own servers and cannot download my mail from them or my home isp. Sprint by the way repeatedly told me this must be an issue with you server. I told him after being on the phone for 3 hours (I could tell he wasn't happy) "You must be right! Microsoft has always developed software much more then anything ever put out in the Unix world".
So the only help I guess I can offer to you is "Yes, I have the same problem with the native outlook that comes with WM5.0

Whenever I see this (and I see it a alot) on mt XDA IIs, I just select Accounts|Clear <account>
If it doesnt work immediately then I restart the Outlook Inbox app and/or disconnect/reconnect.
Been through searching registry/deleting this & that database file / re/installing accounts. Havent had to do that for ages.
I access 5-6 pop accounts from various servers, several are my wife's. My bet is that it has something to do with whether the current status of the emails downloaded in your device matches the server etc - due to the function that you can delete the emails from the server by downloading, deleting and then deleting from the 'deleted items' folder and re-sycning

ME TOO! Any resolution??
I am having the SAME EXACT PROBLEM with my new 6700...did you ever find a resolution?
THanks,
I am having the same problem on a Hermes / TyTN.
My first TyTN was fine. I have 3 email accounts. 1 uses SSL and the other 2 don't. There were no problems using either account.
Having replaced my 1st TyTN with a new one (due to poor wifi on first device) I now get the message 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again'.
The only solution is to use the ForceOffSSL setting for my 2 none-SSL POP3 accounts. Then I have to reboot the TyTN without the ForceOffSSL settings to use my SSL POP3 account.
Continually changing the ForceOffSSL setting and rebooting is annoying, so for the time being I'm using nPOP email client for my non-SSL accounts.
getting an email timed out on cingular 8525
I am getting the same message 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again'. I am having the same problem intermittently with Htc Tytn with a pop account yahoo. I seem to connect without a problem on the internet but i do get this error intermittently. any solution?
Same here ... cannot send mail via OptOnline Account
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK...I got a resolution to this last night on the Cingular forum.
Quick answer is that OOL's SMTP Server is locked down. I needed to change the outgoing server to Cingular's (CWMX.com).
Thanks to anyone who took the time to click-in on this thread.
Happy New Year, all!

===================
Hi all, OK, this marks my first post on this board. I've been a lurker for a few months, and have settled into a Cingular 8525 as my first Pocket PC Phone.
I noticed a few days ago that I could not send mail via my OptOnline Account, unless I was using WiFi or the 8525 was tethered to my home PC via ActiveSync. I was thnking all along that it was probably due to some piece of third party software that I installed over the past few weeks (a hearty thanks to all on these forums who develop and/or market their wonderful wares, btw).
But today, for a lack of anything else to do, I hard reset and tried simply setting up that one account to try my machine out in its pure form. Lo and behold, I still get the same error, 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again.'
As a matter of fact, it seems this message itself is in error, since it happens when I try to SEND a message, not when I try to receive them. I have even received emails in this account at the same time this error message appears, but at any rate, messages in my outbox do not get sent.
As far as I can tell, all the settings are correct. I have played with them, and tried all the permutations I can think of, but this baby will not send mail via this account. My XpressMail and Hotmail accounts work fine, both sending and receiving, and I can browse the web fine via My ISP or WiFi.
I have spent a lot of time searching the web for an answer to this problem, but it seems it's been quite prevalent with WM5.0 devices for well over a year, and still does not have an answer.
So ... my first post ... which should have been a thank you all, and Happy New Year, has turned into a request for the talents of you folk who know so much more than I regarding these devices.
Can anyone please lend a hand? Also ... is it "legal" to cross-post this message onto other forums on this board?
Thanks so much to anyone who can provide a solution.
-Paul Slabowski (a.k.a. pvs)
I got it working
Like others in this thread I was getting the "unable to download messages to device" error when sending. My solution is:
Try leaving the 'domain' field blank.
It's on the Server Information page, and also on the Outgoing Settings if you 'Use separate settings' for your outgoing server.
Hope this helps you.
Rich
Domian Blank
My Domain is blank and frankly im just getting very agrivated by this. Does anybody eles have other advice to give towards this "cannot download message"?
I've got WM6, I've tried clearing and deleting the account, soft resetting the phone, making sure the domain field is empty, etc. It still gives this error for my POP account while my IMAP account is fine. Anyone find a solution?
Yes, deleting the domain really works in some cases (f.e. Gmail), but the same error occurs in my other account although I delete the domain. And funny thing is that it occurs only when there are some emails in outbox, receiving emails seems to work normnally :S
I'm still encountering this problem after trying everything on this post...
any other ideas?
Just had the same problem tonight. My mail server recently changed IP addresses, so I suspect DNS issues were the cause of my problem. I tried using the new IP address in place of the host name, but that didn't work for me. The account settings didn't seem fixable. Deleting the email account entirely and adding it back did the trick.

IMAP email inconsistencies

My ISP's mail server is an IMAP server. I have entered all of the info correctly and I am usually able to connect and receive and send email without issue. However I am seeing a few consistencies:
1) Occasionally it won't be able to send and/ or receive email. I do get an error about network coverage, settings, etc. but I have changed nothing from the last time I used it. Often, shutting down the phone and removing the battery for ten minutes will resolve the issue. Sometimes, it seems that it works thru WiFi but not through T-MO phone service, other times it's exactly reversed (maybe switching between the two is the problem?). It seems that I D/L'd a patch or found some system setting change for this problem on XDA-dev for my old silverface Dash (I now have a Dash 3G), but I can't find it anymore despite two hours spent searching the forums.
2) None of my self-created subfolders on the IMAP server are D/L'd to my Dash. Additionally, email deletes are not transferred either direction. Email deleted on the phone stays on the server and vice-versa. (Yes, of course I checked the "Remove from server " check-box)
Any help is appreciated!

Exchange Mail Problem with HTC Mail - Help Needed

Let me start off by saying that this issue has had me running in circles going batsh!t crazy for weeks now. Generally speaking, Exchange contacts and mail worked for me right out of the box using the built in Sense Mail and continued to work through several iterations of the Fresh ROM. Definitely occasional issues but all in all it worked. And, since I was constantly experimenting with new ROMs, I always just assumed it was me who had done something when syncing stopped working.
That said, after weeks of no tweaking Exchange Mail suddenly stopped working and despite all efforts I can't get it to work well again. Moxier, Roadsync, and Touchdown all work without a hitch. And, even the AOSP Email app I used when trying out Cyanogen continued to sync despite the occasional "connection error." Unfortunately, I would really prefer to use the built in Sense Mail app and hope someone here can help me fix whatever it is that is not working.
What Works and What Doesn't:
Exchange Mail - If I delete the account and start over I can nearly always set the account up but, on occasion get continuous "Failure, Try Again Later" dialogs. Once set up, the phone immediately starts trying to sync. The most frequent result at this point is no mail shows up but the syncing icon will spin for hours to no avail. However, if I go to view the folders, I can see my different folders which are clearly from my exchange account. However, sometimes after I set the account up and it starts syncing, some mail WILL start to show up in the inbox (10-20 messages) but then stop while the sync icon spins indefinitely.
Exchange Contacts - Always worked and continues to work
Exchange Calendar - From the very beginning had "connection timeout socket" issues but so I use a workaround using Google Calendar Sync. I am perfectly fine with this workaround so, if it can't be fixed it is no big deal.
Numerous times I have tried
-deleting and re-adding the account
-changing up the sync options
-wiping the phone and re-flashing ROM's (including stock)
-Using apps that prevent the phone from locking
-screaming and yelling
If anyone can help I would be very grateful. I also attached a logcat that ran this morning.

hmmmm...
For clarification:
After a hard reset, no rooting, no ROM, just a plain stock 2.2 EVO, you cannot sync Exchange mail? Contacts are OK, and Calendar requires workaround?
I would check with your IT dept and see if they have any restrictions on device synchronization. Ensure they are running at least Exchange 2007, and try having them delete the synchronization from the server-side.
I would test on a different EVO, preferably one that has never been rooted or flashed. Does your account sync, or can you duplicate the symptoms?
Fully stock EVO has the same inconsistencies. I'm on my second EVO due to a screen issue with the first one and was traveling so didn't root the new one for about a week and had same issues. Additionally, there is someone in our IT dept with an EVO who has had the same issues but, lacking my perseverance (or stupidity) gave up for touchdown.
It seems to be completely isolated to the HTC Mail app because even if I install the AOSP Email app on a Sense Rom I can sync email fine. Unfortunately, the AOSP Email app has little functionality in comparison and what I like most is the full screen widget of the Sense...

Check your settings for SSL and TLS. Maybe something is off there. Also check how much mail you are trying to sync and the size of the mails you're trying to download. These are all in the account settings.
Also find out if your IT dept has changed anything on their end. I had issues when upgraded from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010, it could be something related to that also...
Perhaps you can provide your settings and we can take a look. It's hard to pinpoint a problem without specific info.
there are some good suggestions in the thread already, but I have something relatively basic you could try. At anytime after deleting your exchange info, did you ever go into manage applications and see if there was any data still in the mail app, and if so, did you try to clear the data and cache before reloading your exchange info?
Regarding the amount of mail I am trying to sync, I've tried the default 14 days down to 3 days with no difference in reliability. I've also tried changing up the allowed size of emails from anywhere between 10kb and entire mail but still no consistency.
The settings I use are pretty straight forward and haven't messed around too much because I haven't seen to many areas to tweak. The server address is mail.companyname.com and the domain is companynameI've tried with and without the SSL box checked which has made no real difference.
What makes it frustrating is the inconsistency. For example, yesterday I deleted and set the account up again with another combination of settings and email started syncing almost immediately. But, as is typical, after syncing the first 20 messages or so nothing else showed up and the sync icon spun indefinitely. And, contacts of course synced without issue.
If there are other settings you recommend me looking at, please let me know.
fachadick had an excellent suggestion. I've seen similar sync issues when the local cache remains even after having removed the account (client-side), or if a particular mailbox in Exchange was previously synced with a Windows Mobile device (server-side).
1. Try removing the account from your EVO, and wiping out the local cache in Settings - Applications - Manage Applications (the 'All' tab). Check every app that is associated: Calendar, Calendar storage, Calendar Sync Adapter, Contacts Storage, etc, etc
2. Have your IT dept delete any and all sync relationships on the server side.
After these two items, reboot your phone, wait a while, and try again. Question: what version of Exchange does your company run?

Weird problem getting screen to come on

Tilt 2, stock rom (august) 2010 rom. Started having an issue the other day whereby I would press the power button and the screen will not come on. Cannot pull the sylus to get the screen (although the buttons light up) nor open the keyboard. If I get a phone call the screen will come on and then all is fine for a while.
So I did a hard reset and the problem persists, so i think I can rule out a software conflict. I must have reset 10 times already today.
Anybody got any ideas on this?
I’m having the same issue. My wife and I both own a Tilt 2, stock Rom 2.10.502.4 | 08.30.2010.
On Friday 5/20 BOTH devices started having the symptoms described. I press the power button and the screen won’t turn on. Removing the stylus lights up the buttons, but won’t turn on the screen. I have to soft reset to get the screen back on. But, within 10-30 minutes the symptoms return.
I did a hard reset on both devices and started reloading the software / settings little by little, looking for the root cause.
I believe IMAP Gmail is the culprit. Both devices are hard reset, with minimum software (Opera 10, .NET framework, and Outlook email & calendar Active Synced). When I added an IMAP gmail account to one of the devices the symptoms return on that device but not the other. I then removed gmail from that device and added it to the other Tilt 2. The Tilt that had gmail removed now works fine, and the 2nd one that gmail was added to now has the symptoms.
I also believe that the frequency of mail retrieval (10 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 hours…) determines how long the device has to sit with the screen off before the symptoms appear.
I’m not sure if it is limited to gmail, or just any IMAP account. And I haven’t tried with POP3 yet.
But this also explains why the symptoms appeared at the same time on these devices.
Try removing your IMAP/POP3 accounts and see if the problem goes away.
I found Gmail to be having problems connecting and I swtiched to manual retrevial last night. Sure enough, not a lockup since
IMAP Gmail was the problem for me...

Thanks Waterbottle - that worked great for me. A few weeks ago when I flashed a new ROM, I re-created 2 Gmail accounts and noticed they set up as IMAP instead of POP3. Soon after, my phone starting having the 'sleep of death' problem and wouldn't wake up without a soft reset or a phone call. Power button was useless. I hard rest, flashed to the stock HTC WinMo 6.5 ROM, stripped every running process, tried everything to no avail. Wasted many hours searching forums and trying things that worked for others but always ended up eventually with SOD.
I saw your post this morning and have spent the day...literally...changing the mail retrieval times on the IMAP Gmail accounts and it is clearly the culprit for me. The phone will wake up before the retrievel time but not after so there must be a hangup on the IMAP retrieval connection.
I also have an Exchange account and 1 POP3 account on this phone and I made no changes to them.
Some hours ago I changed the Gmail accounts to POP3 with 5 minute retrievals and have had no problems. Hopefully that solves the problem.
Depending on your ROM, adding the Gmail account will not give you an option to select POP3. I got around that by putting in a fake email address (anything but @gmail.com) until I got to the type of email selection, selected POP3, and then went back and put in the correct email.
UPDATE: After 1+ week with gmail accounts setup as POP3 instead of IMAP, no wake-up issues. For me - solved!
I have now sufffered with the same issue. Strange as I have had a gmail account for donkeys on the ROM, started last night, didn't realise what the issue was thought it was time for a refresh so hard reset the phone.
Only wish I had checked on here before hard resetting the phone.
I started having this same problem last Friday, May 20 and was about to give up. Reflashed the updated stock rom, numerous hard resets...ugh. Then I found this little gem. Great advice XDA members! I deleted gmail account, reset it as pop and bliss has returned. Thank you!
same here g mail was the issue
but at&t sent me a replacement phone
12 days before the warranty was up
I had this problem as well starting a few weeks ago and localized it to my scheduled email pulls. I have 3 IMAP accounts configured to pull every 15 minutes. It appears that only the gmail one is causing the issue as it is currently set to manual download with the others still pulling every 15 minutes and I have not had the sleep hang for 4 or 5 days now. The other two IMAP accounts are at 1and1.com. I didn't think to try POP for the gmail account so thanks for that tip! I'll set that up and hopefully be back to scheduled pulls for all three accounts.
I suspect a software defect in WM results in a race condition triggered by an odd timing from the IMAP connection to gmail versus other mail providers. Some bit is not getting set or cleared and this prevents normal wake-up later. This likely can happen with any IMAP account but is especially problematic with gmail. Note that an incoming phone call wakes the phone properly when hung so it is not really hung, just unable to be woken up normally.
And yes, like most of you, I hard reset and reinstalled/reconfigured everything (twice actually) while trying to diagnose what was causing this.
Peter
somthing happend last weekkend with g mail and the tilt 2
no more sleep of death after uninstall of g mail
and batt. last longer

Exchange Email Notifications

So, I've had my Galaxy SIII for about a month and a half and everything seems to work great except for the Exchange email app. Since I've had it, I've had to remove and delete all data related to the Exchange app from the app management (Calendar, Email, Contacts, etc.). This has happened to more than just me. As I do IT work for a university, we have several students, faculty, and staff who have this device, on various networks, who are having the same trouble. These are also on different Exchange servers (students are on a Microsoft managed one and faculty/staff is on an in house server), so I don't believe its just the Exchange server that I'm connected to. Its really frustrating that I have remove and readd the Exchange account every few weeks since all of my contacts are pulled from the Exchange server.
Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but if so, I was wondering if anyone had a solution to this problem.
Also, since the last time that I had to readd the account, I cannot change the default notification sound. The option is greyed out and the Dew Drops tone is selected. IMO, this is the most worthless tone on the device and I can never hear it when it goes off. If anyone has any ideas as to why I cannot change the notification tone, I would really appreciate it. I use the email account for work and I receive emails daily, so its a little frustrating that I can't hear my email notifications.
I'm not exactly sure what your first problem is. Why do you have to delete data to the exchange app (is this the main stock email app)? I've had no problem with mine.
For your second issue the ringtone being grayed out, make sure you don't have the phone's ringtone volume on silent or vibrate, that will grey out the box.
Not sure if it is the same, but I have a similar problem. Mine seemed more tied to the wifi network the phone was on than anything else.
If I leave one wifi network, then go on 4G, then to a new network, my Exchange servers will not always connect. If I stay put and toggle off wifi, my exchange server will connect over 4G just fine. Or if I do what you suggest by basically deleting the account, it will connect to the exchange server on wifi.
I noticed it most at work - turn the phone on when I leave the house, get to work and connect to wifi, exchange works fine all day. Drive home, walk in the house, and can not connect to exchange server (though wifi internet connection works). My resolution - restart the phone when I walk in the house in the evening. That worked every time. Annoying - yes, but better than deleting and re-adding the account.
Not sure if it is still an issue with the JB update since my work wifi has been out since then. I did a bit of research, and the best explanation I could come up with was something to do with my home router not releasing the phone when I left, and then not allowing it to reconnect fully (I'm not an IT person, so that is as technical as I get). I noticed the behavior other places with wifi as well, but not 100% of the time.
Hope this helps you narrow down your issue.
I had to clear the data from the app manager as it would not connect to the exchange server again when I readded the account without doing this. Not sure what the deal is. Also, I keep having to change the server address. We have 3 different addresses that mobile accounts should take and I have to rotate through these. It appears that the generic outlook.com will no longer find the server with the Galaxy S3.
As for the switching wifi networks affecting it, that may be an issue. We have a couple of WPA2 networks where I work and one of them gives me authentication errors stating that the username and password is incorrect. If I keep trying to connect, it eventually will without having to retype the password in. Never had this issue with the wifi or the exchange server on my Atrix. Just restarting the phone does not solve the issue for me either. It refuses to connect whether its on wifi or LTE.
As for changing the default ringtone for messages, it was greyed out due to being on vibrate...Seems strange that they would do this as everything else (messaging, gmail, etc.) can all be changed while on vibrate. I also have to change this option in two different places, the general settings and the actual account settings, otherwise it will not take affect. Seems like an odd design.
I was hoping that the JB update would fix some of the wifi and exchange issues, but it appears that it hasn't. I guess I will just have to deal with exchange breaking every few weeks...
