Thought it might be a good idea to share info on the physical side of the BA.....ie from what height have you dropped yours and what was the damage?! Let's face it, it's going to happen at some point.
Here's mine so far:
Fell out of my shirt pocket onto the road :-(
Result: slider far more loose now. Also lost one of those little screws at the top of the device. Otherwise all ok! 8)
HPJ
02 re adament that mine was damaged by misuse. The whiststling screen happened without even cracking it.
The keyboard scratched itself through use.
Mine o god !
So far mine has survived a 1500 two way trip to Switzerland been held by a grip on my bike's handle bars and another one of 300 km one day
I was a little bit rainy but i covered it with celophane plastic
Also has survived the crappy bike charger i made....
BA rules (so far now)
i droped mine a few times on carpet and wooden floors, but no damage done to it. i have also droped it once outside in a carpark onto concret but it was in the holster. only damage that was done was it needed a reboot. bit strange.
after owning several phones and PDAs I have experienced dropping all except my IIs, though I just had it a few weeks ago I take extra care when pulling it out of the case. Now I have it protected in an aluminum case... Good to know the BA can take a few drops, but Id rather not test it myself

Whistling screen is a hardware component failure, you can't make it happen. Best you could probably accomplish is smashing the BA on a table a few times and just breaking the component completely
Chris
Have dropped it more than once and this one drop was near fatal.
Mine dropped straight out of my shirt pocket into a puddle...that too in the dark parking lot....when i finally found it - the stylus was gone, my 512 card had come out - and phone was dead.
Took it to the service centre next day - got it back a week later with no charge applied for the maintenance - infact since my body was majorly scratched due to the drops they changed it.
They asked me if i wanted to change it - and was willing to pay abt $50 for it - so i agreed.
Now my phone is inside a perpetual leather case with a new stylus and a 1gB card. incidently i got the leather case modified so that i never have to take it out or open the case - it its quite sleek and convenient.
rgs/DD
ive dropped mine almost 10 times now all from 5 feet or less and nothing is wrong with it minus one scratch
I've dropped mine a few times down the stairs but it's always been OK. The worst problems is the screwes in the top - these have come loose very easily and I have lost one. Anyone know wher to get replacements or what type they are?
The second screwI just keep tightening all the time. The keyboard has a scratch on it from constant sliding. But that's about it.
I dropped mine from a meter onto concrete whilst travelling at 20km/h. SD card and stylus popped out, machine crashed. I soft reset and then everything is fine except a few scratches and the keyboard is looser.
Fell over after a few drinks and cracked the screen, o2 wanted 180 for a fix i said how about i give u 25 n u give me a new fone..... god i love insurance
I had the ring tone set to old phone and the volume up full. It rang and i pressed the green button and held it to my ear. The button press didn't register and the phone rang again in my ear. VERY VERY LOUD & PAINFULL. My gut reaction was to throw it as hard as i could. Which i did against a wall  . It needed a hard reset but still worked. To be honest it was falling apart of its own accord anyway..
Been there also Griffy, think u pressed answer and it goes off in ya ear so bad my ear was buzzin for days, i always check now... never threw it though.
They can take sum punishment coz i was gettin replacment iv been testin how far or how hard i need to chuck it b4 i comes apart... all i can say is its a tuff little brick!
I think it all depends on how it falls. I've dropped mine twice. First time was on a hard wood floor from about 5 feet. Result: just a scratch. Second time dropped on carpet from less then four feet but keyboard was exposed. Result: face popped off and tore the ribbions connecting the two halfs.
I'm usually rough on equipment so for me this phone is too fragile, the keyboard is a nice feature but the sliding face makes for a week device.

Hahhaha, I had the exact same experience with my IIs though I didnt drop it...I also have the old phone as my ringtone.... The problem with O2 is that they use only 1 speaker for ringing and earpiece unlike nokia phones and some other brands
I have had my VZW TP2 for a while now, and while I try to keep it scratch free it has had a bumpo and bruise before.
Yesterday is fell while I was stepping out of my car. I picked it up, brushed it off, and got angry when I saw a small knick, maybe 2mm long, in the screen. Angrily I turned the screen off and put it back in my pocket.
About an hour later I went to use the phone, and to my suprise, no touchscreen! LCD is fine, no distortion or damage what-so-ever.
Is it possible for such a small knick to completely trash the touchscreen?
I have tried multiple resets and cannot get it to recognize anything.
Short of replacing the screen and/or digitizer, anything I can do?

Not sure if I would calling dropping the phone a few feet from up in the air onto what I can only assume was concrete and not pillows a small "kick"
It sounds like your digitizer is pooched. If your phones under warranty just sent it away to get fixed. It shouldnt shake loose like that I dont think. I know things happen and theres nothing you can do about it when it does. With my touch pro I had a silicone case for it I dropped it so much.. And by dropped it I mean like it would fly 5 feet or more and then the back plate would shoot off and the battery would fly out... not good to do once let alone multiple times! I was sick of my silicone case (which I got after dropping the phone probably a good 10 or more times) so I took it off, a week later I was out on my back patio and had my phone in my shirt pocket. I was on my knees and bent over to pick up something and it slid out. Fell maybe a foot and I picked it up and there was a crack across the screen.. Son of a B$%^&H!
Just happened to land on the corner perfect I guess... Regardless point of that story is I wouldnt call the phone fragile by any means. These things are beasts! But as we know... stuff happens.
Hope it works out for you.
Sorry, forgot to put my thread title as a question.
So, this new appartment i'm at has a hot tub and 2 pools available, so tonight we decided to go to the hot tub. I usually take my phone with me to play music as we are sitting around relaxing by the pool or hot tub(speaker is loud enough to put it a fair distance away). This time, being the idiot that I am, i walked into the hot tub with the phone in my pocket, took me a good minute or two before i realized. I realized this, having just turned the phone on two minutes before i went to the pool after swapping batteries, and took it out of my pocket and it wasn't on. Took the battery out immediately and wrapped it in my towel, brought it in about ten minutes later, wiped up remaining water, and put it in to a jar full of rice. Thing is, i had a 3rd party battery in it when it was there, i know the water damage indicator is on the battery(not sure if there are more in the phone). Because i didn't have the default batter in it, in case that it does work(which it probably won't, i can see water under the screen), would i possibly be able to get away with saying it just stopped working? I looked at the ifixit teardown and only saw them point out 1 water damage indicator, on the battery. So XDA, am i screwed or what? From what i looked up sprint doesn't cover water damage, which sucks, what, if they find out, will i have to pay to replace my evo?
I think I would be astounded at HTC's stupidity if the only water damage indicator was on the most easily user-replacable part: the battery. Seriously, there would be absolutely no point in having a water damage indicator if anyone could just buy a new battery, throw it in, and claim that their Evo just somehow stopped working.
If you have insurance, it covers water damage-- but just like loss or theft, you have to pony up for the $100 deductible.

I was guessing there were more, but I was going specifically off of what i remember from the ifixit teardown. Well, that's a bummer, i was hoping it was more like $50, but $100 isn't bad, could be worse :\.
I dropped mine in the water for like 3 seconds this week. I actually called Sprint and they told me as long as I have insurance (which I do) they would cover it. I heard the rice thing works but I didn't try it. What I DID do, was put my phone in the oven at 100F for about 2 hours. I just put a cookie sheet in there and put my phone on a paper towel. I know people say "oh wtf you put it in the oven?!?!" but really......100F isn't a temp that your phone never sees so there really isnt any harm. Anyways, it worked GREAT for me. Pulled all the water out of the screen and out of the camera lens and now it works perfectly.
oh wtf you put it in the oven?!?!
It's a good thing you and your friends don't like to enjoy a slice of toast in the hot tub.
I have a water damage indicator like..RIGHT inside the bottom right side of the back. Just under the battery cover. Does nobody elses phone have one right there?
Also, I've seen pictures of the motherboard of the phone. There is one on there was well.

No, its to the right. Not all the way, closer to the middle than it is to the corner. Its a white square with red stripes. I have an 002. Might be different on 003. *shrug*

Yeah I found it. There is one on my battery too. The red stripes indicate water damage? Because mine have red stripes haha.
here's what I would try, this worked on my Zune HD when it got soaked in a cup of vodka, and hopefully this works on my friend's samsung phone she just got. Take the phone apart completely, use q-tips to dry it, use q-tips with rubbing alchohol to clear the water and any buildup of crap from the water, then put the individual parts in rice, which will dry it much faster. Afterwards, maybe 2-3 days later, put device back together and BAM! it works! my Zune's been working for 2 weeks now with no problems, and the liquid was under the screen, and my friend's phone, well she dropped it in the toilet yesterday, and it's sitting in pieces yet to be put into rice, too busy right now, will do it later.
A few years ago my friend did a cannonball into the pool and realized mid-air that his phone was still in his pocket. I'll never forget the expression on his face.

No, all red is a triggered indicator. The red pattern is so that you can't bleach the indicator and lie about what happened.
I have tried the rice thing.. takes too long. My to2 I have dropped in the toilet (fell out of my sweatshirt front pocket while lifting to take a leak) fell in a puddle and a beer poured on it. Stick works great. What I did is present over to 200 degrees. Once presented place phone without battery and back onto middle rack onto if a cloth. Leave for an hour. Check phone to see if water is in screen. Repeat process 2-4 times.
With the rice I had a problem of dust and rice stuck on phone. Hard to get out of cracks. Also you can go to Sprint and say your battery isnt working without your phone if with your phone after you don't the oven trick. They should replace it. If they see that its been water damage tell them you had a lol brother or sister take your battery out and found it like that. They prob will check to see if phone works with new one and should. Good luck.. this saved me plenty of times. The tp2 was from us cellular and did battery exchanges no questions asked.

Your battery might of shorted out. When you put back together charge first because the water drains the charge. If it doesn't work after a charge you need a new battery.

Not reccomended but....at my store's service in repair we didnt go off just indicators alone, altho the motherboard one is fairly hard to say it didnt get soaked to.
butt the battery and outside one yes, If you tear the phone down and clean off the corrosion most of the time the phone will function fine after that.
Second benefit is that if there is no corrosion then we normally replace the phone in store anyway.
YMMV
anyway if it cant be saved via standard preventative stuff time to make an insurance claim :-(
Not sure if this method will work for everyone but it worked for my old Nokia phone. I washed it with a load of laundry and dried it in the dryer. Found the phone in the dryer, wouldn't turn on so I pulled the battery and stuck it back in, phone worked great after that.
Dropped it in toilet drunk, got it out. Noticibly slower, many things FC, some keys don't work.
Already have 2 insurance claims this year, can't get a replacement that way. How can they tell it's water damaged? I noticed a pink sticker thing on the battery, is this some sort of water damage indicator? I have a spare battery if thats the only thing that would alert the techs to this being my fault.
If I took it in with a different battery after odinging to stock would they just think it crapped out on me due to no responsibilty of my own?
That suck man.... here's a link about the water indicator's..... and I think the reps would look for corrosion over the indicators because if they get the phone before it rusts then they can dry it out correctly......

Yeah, looks like I'll have to take it to them and play dumb, and if they mention the water damage and refer me to asurion who I don't think will do more than 2 claims in a year, I'll just pull the cancel card, bring up the 2 100 dollar rebates that I never got and get a nexus s for 250
this is the third time i've heard about the epic being dropped in water and it still worked(ish) freaking incredible! kudos samsung
I could be mistaken but I thought TEP allowed you more claims than just 2 a year, maybe quite a few more. Good luck.

Me as well. Someone dropped theirs in a pot of Tomato Soup and it still worked. If you havent , let it dry without battery, back cover, also remove SD. You may get lucky and have a full functioning phone again. If that doesn't work, try saying you work construction and phone got damp from being in your pocket while working. My touchscreen broke and I took it to get repaired. At first the tech said I was screwed because of a hairline crack in the plastic around the screen. I explained that it failed before that. So, I was extra friendly. I started talking about upcoming phones, etc. Well, he ended up giving,me a new screen, keyboard, back cover. Only my motherboard was original. Paid nothing. If you don't have insurance, be cool and don't get upset. I bet $35 gets you a new whatever needs to be replaced...maybe some extras like I did

I think it will dry out, it was running fine for a bit, all keys working, not going slow, then it started going slow and a few keys stopped working. Decided to just go ahead and get the nexus s, CM7, oh yeah...

Yeah, you do get three claims but I figured dry out and sell the epic if I get it working 100% keep a claim in case I drop the nexus, and enjoy cm7

Ha. Dropped mine in the toilet 2 weeks ago. Seriously had it out of the water within 1.5 seconds. Left it in rice overnight. Worked on bootup the next day. But after about an hour it went kaputz. Had to use assurion.
Posted via Premium XDA app from my Samsung Epic 4G.
I sat this one in rice a few hours, then let it sit by a fan all day, reoodined stock ec05. Gonna give it a few days to make sure it still works fine and sell that bad boy.
I don't miss my hardware keyboard one bit.

My girl dropped her EVO in the toilet, dead. I dropped mine in a sink full of water, it actually sat there for about 3 full seconds until i reailzed what the splash was. Pulled it out, set it next to a little portable heater for a few hours and to my astonishment it still worked perfectly. Some water must have gotten in the screen as it is a little blury in a small spot but other than that I'm still using it like it's new. If you've ever taken one of these apart, it is easy to see how hard it would be for water to fully get inside the case.
Son spilled soda all over mine. I cleaned it up and dried out battery. That was 7 months ago and it works like a champ. I am getting a galaxy s 2 when they hit the u s.

Just dropped mine into the toilet about an hour ago. when i finished getting over the idea that I, too, was now one of those people, i put down the litter box I was about to scoop and fished it out.
Next thing I did was rip the back off and dump the battery, idea being to avoid any shorts caused by water mixed with power on circuit board. It had been in there for like 3 seconds, maybe 4.
I knocked it about for a while to see how much water would pour out - not much! So I let in dry out for like 10 mins, knocked it out a bit again, then put the battery in. First thing I noticed was that it seemed to turn on BEFORE I pressed the power button, something I specifically noticed. Hmmm.
The rest seemed normal enough. I was crazy impressed! Even a small dunk in a toilet (clean, luckily) is not a drop in a shallow puddle.
However, a bit later I needed to boot into recovery, and I couldn't get the freakin' phone to shut off. I mean it would shut off but come right back on again. I was thinking, water drop in the power button or worse a permanent short.
When I took the back off I saw that the camera had moisture inside of it. I remembered when this happened to a telephoto lens of mine recently and I extended the lens all the way as I walked. The lens casing heated in the sun and the moisture came out through the uh, rings? of the fully-extended lens.
So imagining that if the water could get in, it could get out, I broke out the hairdryer. It's a small one I've used for putting that plastic stuff over windows in the winter. I put it on high and held it like 2 or 3 feet from the back of the phone (cover off) for a while, always moving it to avoid hot spots on the phone. After a min or 2 the moisture was gone. I spent another min waving the dryer over the power button.
Wallah! works perfectly. nice....

I suppose one has to know the rules before you can break them. I have some experience with electronics and circuit boards, and have a feel for how much heat I could safely apply to the thing. I tried to indicate this in the original message by writing that I kept the dryer a few feet away from the phone, that it is a small dryer, and that I always kept it in motion. Oh and that I performed this maneuver over a period of a few minutes.
If anything goes wrong I'm sorry to say it was because I dropped it into a toilet. The age old tried and true blow dryer method, when properly applied, wouldn't be a problem.

Good evening XDA,
I'll get right to the point - last night my mom's S3 fell out of her purse and sat on our driveway overnight in rain/freezing rain. It was in an otterbox commuter case so it wasn't naked but there are some issues with it now.
1 - the front and rear cameras are both foggy and look terrible when taking pictures/video
2 - the back key doesn't work consistently
I've looked at the water damage markers and they are both white. Do you think Telus will give her a replacement or will they say something about the foggy looking front/rear cameras? Is there anything I should know before I go there?
Also, if I disassemble the phone to try and dry the cameras, will this void my warranty? I couldn't see a warranty void sticker...
I've put the phone in a ziploc bag full of rice so hopefully that helps getting the foggyness out of the camera and if it does, I'll definitely try and get it replaced for her.
You should have put in in rice before you try anything.
Maybe hard-brick the phone and tell them you don't know what happened
Not sure myself, I personally knocked over a cup of tea and I'm fairly sure some of the water got in around the home button.I dried the water immediately, and the phone was powered on, so I just kind of left it. I have driving mode turn on-off randomly for a day, usb connecting even when not connected and randomly and random shutdowns for a month. Seems all fine now.
