Nexus One (Speak2Text) feature in Desire??? - Desire General

Hi
Just wondering if Desire will have same Nexus One (Speak-2-enter-text in text msgs & Google Maps etc) feature on it, plus all other cool features in N1 (as I don't own N1, nor I have used any Android phone yet so don't know if these features are in Android build or only for N1).
Can we also start a poll to take member's opinion which phone they think is better between HTC Desire & Nexus One...
Thanks
K7

None of the features are N1 only they're just features of Android 2.1 which is what the Desire runs on

According to cnet, the voice to text function is not there (out of the box)
guess it wouldn't be long before someone makes it happen

is an internet connection required for the speech2text function?

You could just install the stock android keyboard to the device to use it.
Although HTC's is incredibly accurate and seems to be able to predict exactly what you want no matter how ****ed up you mish mash at the keys

So while HTC Desire's Sense Keyboard does not support Voice to Text, the user can (without modding) switch to Android Keyboard and enjoy speech to text? Please can you confirm that? I was about to un-desire Desire because I so much expect to use S2T for posting online.

Assuming you can install the android keyboard without root, yes. One can install other keyboards without root (swype for example) so i don't see why the stock android keyboard would be any different.
There is something else to keep in mind. Just because you might be able to install the keyboard, the actual underlying support may have been removed. I don't have the desire rom installed on my nexus anymore or I would check to see if speech to text abilities were even there.

Speech to text has been there since 1.6 though, for google search and translate.
There is absolutely no reason at all why HTC would remove this they just haven't included it in their keyboard.
This means that the ability to get Speech to Text is already there embeded in the phone, you just need a keyboard with the "Speech to Text" button to make use of it in messaging.

As I m spending well few hours everyday 2 decide about which one
I should get Desire r N1... It's so tough 2 decide 1 of these 2 devices
as I like few things in N1 & few in Desire........ Text 2 Speech is
some thing I don't wan2 compromise on (I've read some where
that T2S is not very accurate at the moment but I m still so
fascinated by it), so if there is no such function available in
Desire....then I will go 4 N1.

If this functionality isn't present in the Desire upon release am I correct in assuming that someone will release a ROM where this is possible?
and also if its true that its just the keyboard that needs replacing is that something you need root to do? or can you just install a new keyboard? (Bit of a noob here)

That is why XDA is the place for all your rooting/ROM flashing/making-my-phone-awesome needs

You don't need to be rooted to install a new keyboard.

If that was directed at me...I know you don't need to be rooted to install a new keyboard. I learned that when I had my MyTouch and installed the HTC_IME keyboard from Cyanogen.

2 b honest haven't checked it yet properly... Been busy at work. Plus it's my 1st Android experience, so I have quite few questions... Till now have only made few calls & used Google Maps which seems lot more better & smoother than WinMo.

I would assume you have the Speech-to-Text feature on the Desire, as it was previously mentioned, it's an Android 2.1 feature, not a Nexus One exclusive feature. You also don't need to install any other keyboards, as the Desire Sense keyboard has the key already, as seen at 3:12 in the following video:

speech to text on t-mobile Desire

All,
I got my Desire this morning and it runs quite nicely. However i am trying to get the TTS to work on it. Installed all components but I am not getting the mic icon up and running. the entry speech to text is there but nowhere to enable it.
Anyone got a Desire that has a different ROM version?
I am running: 1.15.110.10
Build: 1.15.110.10CL153468 release-keys
I so want to try this feature. Should have bought a Nexus instead even though I do like the real buttons over the Nexus that my Boss has. Sense UI is nice too but Nexus owners got it on their devices vis ROM porting as well.
I hope this will get popular once the device has been fully released and masses are buying it.

Is there a thread specifically about the T-Mobile version? ppl are saying it may not be in the T-Mobile version and may be exclusive to retail/unlocked versions.
Thought you would be able to change to the default android keyboard. weird. It better be on the retail version...

Figured it out: voice search is not available in the Canadian market....I just googled the apk
Damn. I love this. Craps all over swiftkey beta. It was my preferred input before I tried HTC. Thanks for heads up.

I tried HTC_IME (not sure whether it was this same one) earlier, and I don't really get the charm. Is it just the languages supported? It's not multi-touch I believe and I missed a lot of letter due to that, especially space. I am currently using the Droid X Multi-touch and it's faster than everything else (and I've tried almost all). The thing is that I can type fast enough on this not to need prediction, I only use that for spelling correctione etc.
Been using this for awhile to skin my own HTC IME, first on my Milestone, then on my Galaxy.
i love you guys :-D.thx a lot for this!

Always heard good things about the HTC keyboard and after installing this i can see why.
anyone know how to enable the on screen dpad, or is there one even available on the HTC keyboard?
Can anyone tell me how to remove this completely? I uninstalled from applications, but does that remove Clicker.apk too? I can't find it in /system/app either
can't install
i can install the click apk but not the htc ime apk, what program you guys use to install, it tells me through Astra that file can't be read as an apk.

[Q] Paying for the Custom ROM??

Hi,
I was gifted the Sony Ericsson Arc as a replacement for my current phone the HTC Desire. After using the HTC Desire for the last 1 year , I am finding it very difficult to get used to the Sony Ericsson UI (problems like : no smart dialer, the contacts are all messed up,all the text size is huge, the randomly flickering display etc..).
I was wondering whether there is anyone or any place I can pay money to create a custom ROM. When I say custom ROM I dont mean Cyanogen or others like that (I mean the stock ROM with the proper replacements for dialer, contacts editor, facebook integration etc..) , I just want a ROM on my phone which will look and feel like the HTC Sense UI (again I am not asking for the actual Sense UI, as I understand thats impossible).
Thanks.
Any help is appreciated.

You understand the HTC apps require the sence framework, so they will not work on the arc, there are many other dialer and contacts replacements, you can download from the market, Go dialer and contacts for example is excellent
The makers of TouchPal Keyboard have a smart dialer app called TouchPal Dialer. Haven't tried it out but it's available for free on the market.
The android 2.3.3 update brought Facebook integration to the xperia range.
How does relate to my post?

Thanks for the info.
Sorry, I should have explained. You wanted a custom ROM basically a stock ROM but a replacement for the dialer, right? I was just pointing out an app using which you could replace the stock dialer (and which supported smart dialing).
Facebook integration was another aspect you mentioned.
xboxfanj posted a thread by which you could the Sense 3.0 Lockscreen using Agile Lock. You can find it here.
EDIT: Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you wanted a stock arc ROM with the necessary changes; not the HTC ROM. Ooops!
But hey, I got the Sense 3.0 Lockscreen part right. LOL!
Blagus is working on a HTC Sense port for Xperia Play http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174309 once he starts the work it maybe matter of time once we get it for Arc since both are almost similar. If your talking about hiring someone then talk to one of the developers who are willing to accept the offer.

Well that's kind of the problem, I don't know which developer to ask. I can't do a post in the Sony Arc Development sub forum, cause the rules say I can't post Q&A queries in the forums. Is there any one I can ask or PM to find out how to build this custom ROM ??
As anyone else can tell you, a custom rom for the arc maybe a while before all the functions are workable, the camera is the problem, so maybe do as others have suggested and use third party apps to get the experience your after
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
The main problem with custom ROM is going to be Camera function because Arc has the latest Camera technology they haven't released the drivers or source for it so developers can make it work on custom ROM. So we have to wait until someone manage to port one so others can use it.

However I have explained in my first post that the kind of custom ROM I am asking is based on the stock ROM with appropriate replacements for the dailer, contacts, facebook integration, text size etc... Basically I want to simulate a Sense UI.
Perhaps a theme could you help you out for the time being till someone makes a custom ROM for you? At least you should be able to get similar icons, background wallpaper etc.

[Q] Faster keyboard for fast typing on HTC WS

Hi
I just bought WS and have a oportunity to try my friends Samsung Galaxy Ace. I can compare just a keyboard and typing on it and I was surprised about speed of Samsung! Reaction time between two different letters is very short to compare with Wildfire S! So when I write faster on WS than in text are missing letters, on Samsung not. Why ?
Does anybody have chance to compare Samsung keyboard with HTC ? just try! is that general different of brand or just model different ?
try on your phone tuch letters "A" and "L" and keept touching and increase speed till you reach border of your keyboard or fingers
Correct result shoul looks like : alalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalal even you write very fast in my case on Smasung it was perfect.
But on WS looks final text in same speed like: aalllalllalalllalalallaaalalalallaalaalll
Is there any way how to increase reaction time on WS? if not than I sell my WS and buy Samsung
and sorry for my english
Tested it on my WFS and I see what your saying.
I use Swype beta for touchscreen input. Its a very fast way of typing when you get used to it
Surely the WS is just too small to type quickly and accurately?
I have installed something called big thumb (?) or similar which makes things slightly better ... I wish I'd bought a bigger phone to be honest
Yap. I noticed that too. I can't belive it but Samsung keyboard is better...
this is not a problem of small keyboard but problem of Android settings from HTC. I think its slow becasu of vibration of keyboard. Smasung has no vibration and I found that I do not need it at all! Yes, bigger display is better but I can tuch rigth letters easy on WFS but its just slow. You have to try writte something on Samsung and you will see! And becasuse Samsung Galaxy Ace has now Android 2.3.3 and video 640x480, enaught of RAM even it is less than WFS I am gonna to sell WFS and buy Smamsung And I think that battery is better as well. Finaly I do not like HTC Sense as many so why I bought HTC ? Because I just do not have experience, but only read specification and compare numbers and its is not good way to select right phone. Ok next time
And as I wrote its a problem of Android settings from HTC. It means that some one who is skilled can make some edit of Android and just change a respons of keyboard.
anybody knows ? ?
hey users of HTC, are you satisfied with speed of your keyboard ? If yes, just try samsung or learn to writte faster
I've just installed Beta Swype and the problem is solved

Thanks. I had Swype before on my Samsung Galaxy Ace, found it useful but the keyboard's look just doesn't make the cut for me.
But for those who don't want Swype then they can download the Keyboard for Android 2.3 by Steven Lin from the Android Market, quite useful too. Not like the WS keyboard, the A and L trick should work.
I use smart keyboard pro. You can customize it a lot and also change visuals. Now i have a samsung style keyboard. You can also make the keyboard larger for bigger buttons etc ...
I've abandoned QWERTY and have started using the XT9 keyboard which suits my sausage sized fingers perfectly.

Change keyboard to standard ICS

Hi,
Sorry for the newb question. Just converted from the dark side..
I love my HTC One X, but the keyboard is driving me nuts. I had a brief run with a Galaxy Nexus recently and found the standard keyboard on that much better for me and more like what I was used to on iOS.
Is there anyway to replace the standard HTC keyboard with the default ICS one without flashing a new rom? If I can't disable the HTC one has anyone got a recommendation for the replacement from the market? I did try the free ICS keyboard but couldn't seem to get it to activate after selecting it in settings > keyboard.
I do know a couple of people who have installed this and found it to be very good. Its a port of the ICS keyboard.

Let us know how you get on.
Thanks. That one seems to allow me to enable it. First impressions seem good. At least it doesn't take half the screen up as well!

I'm using a stock ICS keyboard from the Market. Makes life much easier than the rubbish HTC attempt. Shame about the persistent input switcher in the notifications bar though.
