What about WinMo 6.7??? - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

Amidst the hype of Win7Mo..are we forgetting the 6.7 somewhere??

Yeah! I was wondering what happened to the other roumors... And what may be the meaning of that word "Series"... Any speculation?

Windows Mobile 6.5.3 will possily be rebranded to Windows Phone Classic Series and aimed at emerging markets and enterprise users. So that's the meaning of Series, good old WM will coexist .

You are wrong mate... Microsoft had already stated that no device that was available at the time of the Windows Mobile 6.5 announcement would receive an offical upgrade.
So there's absolutely no chance Windows Mobile 7 will be available for the HD, only the HD2 and future PDA releases

Mastoid is right..!
The biggest glitch is the HD's hardware as it is incompatible with WM7 in that the new OS requires a capacitive (multi-touch) screen.
When hardware restrictions are involved, not even the top XDA members can help.

Time will tell as it is now nothing more then a waiting game.
The full capacity of WM7 can only be unleashed through the proper devices. Diamond and touch pros are not these devices and if WM7 makes it to these devices in some shape way or form, it will be interesting....
The argument in question was specifically dealing with whether or not the HD could support Windows Mobile 7 - it has been justified that it cannot due to hardware requirements... i rest my case.

You have not made a valid argument yet you have some weird standards of what it means to have the "hardware requirements" then.
Touch Pro has 528 MHz so does the Diamond, HD, Xperia X1, and the TP2. Devices with 528Mhz and above, are ABLE to run Windows Mobile 7. Enough said ^^

just that you're not unleashing W7's potential.
It's just like having a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which supports HD videos, on a currently-officially-running-under-Windows-Mobile-6.5 HD2 , or if this is unclear, another example: running Windows 7 on a PC with 200Mhz processor and not-touchable-monitor
here's a major requirement that HD not fulfilled:

WM7 will not be coming to the HD officially or unoffically, case closed....some of XDA's wonder developes may be able to get some builds working on HD, but these will be limited and you will never see wm7's full potential. It would like having a ferrari, but being restricted to 1st gear and 30 miles an hour. May look nice on the HD, but whats the point of having it

Windows Mobile 7 to get public debut next month

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!!
fOUND THIS ON MSN!
According to a Microsoft executive, we are set to see the latest version of Microsoft's mobile operating system – the much-hyped Windows Mobile 7 – finally unveiled to the great unwashed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.
It is hardly the most surprising news, as many mobile industry punters were secretly hoping to see the new mobile operating system being shown off by Microsoft at CES this month. But that clearly did not come to be.
Mobile World Congress launch
Entertainment and Devices Division president Robbie Bach claimed that Windows Mobile 7 "things will be talked about at MWC" at the company's Financial Analyst meeting at CES.
"I've seen it and played with it. It will set the bar forward not in (just) an evolutionary way," added Bach.
Bach went on to add that Microsoft plans to be "more engaged" with OEMs in its "go to market approach."
Microsoft clearly hopes to change the shifting emphasis away from Windows Mobile to Apple's iPhone and Google's Android with the latest version of its mobile operating system. We are looking forward to bringing you all the news from the ground in Barcelona next month.
FLYBOY
Sounds good. I'll keep my eyes open! Thanks for info.
I just really hope that Microsoft knows that if this is WM7 is not earth-shatteringly epoch-making, then they are almost all but screwed in the mobile market, and will get torn up. I have been a winmo supporter, but with all thid screwing around recently, it's hard to be optimistic. Most winmo oems are now 50/50 w. android.
Since WM 7 will not be trying to support millions of "older" users from 3 different systems I have high hopes for what MS will be unveiling. I truly feel they can get it done and give us a complete system that functions well, is easy to use and visually stimulating. Why do I feel this? They have done it with Windows 7 and proven it may take a long time, but they can do something "right" for this current generation.
If not - I must agree that they will be dead in the water concerning mobile phones.
Thank you for the updates Flyboy.
YEAH!!!!! If WM7 will be out next month... the HTC HD2 will surely get an upgrade!

Microsoft come on, claim back your title in mobile market!!
Question is Did he mention it was WM7? Or did he just say "the next version of WM"???
lets look at reality guys...what is the next version of windows mobile? is it windows mobile 7??
no.....im a windows fan and have been, however i just hope they dont let us down...im kinda scared hes gnna announce windows mobile 6.5.3.3 or Windows Mobile 6.7 or something
i mean they announced 6.5, u think there gonna jump right to 7 without explaining another OS that came out??
I do believe WM7 will be released late this year, im just not so sure there gnna announce 7 without announcing their "latest OS so far" which is what were all running on our phones, remember the leaked version of another OS, wm6.5.3.3??
Windows announced that theres gonna be two OS to be running on phones simultansously withing the next few months/years...6.5 and 7. WM6.5 will be the cheaper version and 7 will be the elite version....i hope im wrong, just have a bad feeling about them prolonging this as much as possible. December 31st will be the first day windows 7 hits stores. Late Q4
to all you HD2 users...soorry but keep getting familiar with 6.5, cause 7 won't be on your devices for at least another 6 months, and thats being generious.
Don't forget the latest news of Xbox Live coming to Windows Phone (probably WM7 only)!
http://kotaku.com/5445100/xbox-live-officially-heading-for-mobile-phones?skyline=true&s=i
Should i be happy that i will be able to upgrade my HTC VIVA when Win 7 comes, or just see you guys celebrate with faster CPUs ?
Not sure I understand that question right but I dont see why people would want to try to hack WM7 to run on anything older than a HD2, it would be like trying to run Windows Vista (yup not even 7) on an old 486 200 MHz Computer
Im guessing given the minimum spec that even if it did run you would have to turn off so much of the fancy stuff that it wouldnt be worth it in the end.
Thats why 6.5.3 etc is there, to update older phones.

i understand the reason of 6.5.3/.3 and 7....
my point was, if they developed and changed 6.5 to 6.5.3.3 i personally doubt there just going to ignore it and introduce wm7 at some of these conferences, one/some/all of these conferences are gonna have to introduce the latest 6.5
IMO 6.5.3 = 6.5
The differences aren't THAAAT much. What has changed? Start menu gone to bottom. Small fix in the OS, big results for the user experience. A few very sloppy apps aren't working properly anymore but WFT?? After all not much has changed so I don't think they need to announce it once more.
They'll introduce WM 7!

First good news about WinMo after a while. I do hope that Windows Phone Classic (if the rumor is true) will be interesting for HTC and other manufacturers, because all I really need is 1 GHz+ device with big screen, hardware keyboard and of course WinMo 6.5. And about that Starter edition, I'm really not interested.
Edit - in case someone didn't noticed it, my comment is about this article: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/17/windows-mobile-6-5-to-be-redubbed-windows-phone-classic/.
im hoping that the'll eventually update the "classic" with photon
who is more confused now? us or MS?
The thread's title "wp7s starter will me stripped down 6.5" doesn't make any sense. There's no WP7 starter...
Exactly. They say "Windows Phone Starter", not "Windows Phone 7 Series Starter". So it's 7, Classic and Starter.

This makes no sense unless there's going to be some kind of compatibility between 6.5 apps and 7 apps.
So far, what we've heard is there's no compatibility, so I can't understand why Microsoft would sell 2 incompatible products designed for the same purpose.

Wrong. 6.x will be targeted for the low-spec cheap devices until decent hardware becomes available in lower price segments. It will also go to "emerging markets" (whatever that means) in a stripped down cheap version to fill the same niche where possible. And finally, it'll be left to live for a while to accomodate needs of enterprises who have whatever WM-based IT solutions deployed to give them time to redesign and redeploy new ones. MS Business Division head specifically mentioned in a recent interview that they have invested more than ever into WP7S, so they obviously count on it in their market as well. It would be ridiculous to bet on 6.x in medium term as it's losing market share in the enterprise segment as well.

Microsoft Germany: WM 6.5 is here to stay

Can you smell Microsoft getting smarter:
---
Q
Microsoft originally intended to keep WM6 alive as Windows Phone Classic. Will this still be done now that WME has been announced? If yes, for how long?
A: Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile 6.5 will coexist in the market for some time. Windows Mobile provides many advanced enterprise features that large customers rely on in managed environments.

Did you know that support for Windows 2000 ends on Tuesday? Microsoft isn't one to leave their enterprise customers hanging. No reason to believe that they aren't being sincere with that promise.
Notice he specifically referenced enterprise, nothing about supporting WM in the consumer space. Seems to me they are now trying to position WM as purely an enterprise OS and are ignoring the (still) millions of non-enterprise owners of WM phones.
Lets not kid ourselves, after WP7 launches you wont see any new consumer WM devices or support, only devices geared for enterprise use like rugged WM devices. Right now they are just marking time, as Windcape said if MS came out and said they are ditching WM in October their sales would plummet even faster than its currently doing.

WM has never been positioned as a consumer OS. It's always driven me insane as I'm a "consumer" user but that's the truth. Enterprises have need for more than just ruggedized devices, some use them for general purpose email, etc. Also, WP7 doesn't support chinese, etc so they will continue to launch new devices in those markets. Of course what really matters is the OEMs. You will probably only see a few new devices launched and they will be enterprise focused (stuff like the TP2) since they won't make any money selling consumer WM6 devices with WP7 sitting right there next to it.
The fact is, we non-enterprise WM users are a pretty small minority.

In all the years I have owned a WM device I have never seen it promoted as solely an enterprise OS and NOT being suitable for consumer use, in fact wasnt 6.5 promoted as being suitable for work AND consumer use? Its also hard to believe that the bulk of WM sales are to the enterprise, I doubt very much enterprises put in large orders for devices like the HD2, Diamond, Omnia. And if that really is the case they should stop direct sales of WM devices to consumers, why sell a phone which is advertised with entertainment features like the HD2 was?

In more recent times, yes. But 6.5 was just a stop-gap til they could get WP7 into the market. It's still very much targeted at business use. I remember all of the marketing for the Sprint Mogul was solely business oriented. They completely ignored media, etc.
So yes, those devices were targeted at consumers but that wasn't Microsoft doing it. Even look at the ad campaign for WM6.5... it was all about taking office apps with you on the go. Yea, that's exactly what consumers care most about. WM has always been enterprise/business 1st, everyone else 2nd. So not solely for enterprise but that was the clear priority.
But getting back to the original point... MS will continue to support WM as it is today for the next few years at least. Will the OEMs make new devices? Probably in foreign markets and some business focused devices in Europe and the US. But pretty much any device that most people will want to use will be WP7. Once WP7 picks up more enterprise capabilities, I would expect it to shift.

A lot of Android and Iphone fanboys simply are yet to realize how deep Microsoft is with enterprise customers and the excellent job they have done at continuing support for legacy systems. Android has already left their early adopters eating sawdust and the system is less than 3 years old. I'm unsure on if the original Iphone was given a viable update to the new Iphone OS4 so I can't comment, but I'm pretty sure they are going to have issues in the future as the hardware demands grow for the Iphone. I think it is awesome that Microsoft is creating a brand new platform that will kick ass while still having a viable system in place for the legacy phones that are out there.

Most who were on NT 4 or 2000, moved to XP anyway...if not on 7 (most skipped over vista)
Microsoft abandoning WM for WP?
Are Microsoft completley abandoning Windows Mobile for Windows Phone?
It seems to me that this would be a stupid idea since Windows Mobile is a basically a Mobile OS rather then a Mobile Phone OS.
Wouldn't it be much more logical to have 2 branches, ie a Mobile and Phone?

i would agree. 2 are better than one. it would also be better competition towards apple n android. lets go WM.
I doubt it. MS will continue to support WM6.X for a while yet. Now 3rd party support is another story...
No they learned this back in their parrallel solution days. When they had Windows 98/ME running in parrallel with Windows NT & 2000. They decided it was better to integrate both and offer a more robust & easier to use OS in Windows XP.
The same goes for this...they just have to learn how to integrate advanced features + Ease of use into a mobile OS.
But in the shortterm they are running Windows Embedded compact for busiess and wp7 is more consumer driven.

[Q] Is it posible to downgrade a windows phone 7 or android to windows mobile 6.5

Is it posible to install windows mobile 6.5 on an windows phone 7 or android phone ?
I ask this because we are dropping support for windows phone but it is going to take a while for us to do the port to android and our clients are having trouble geting devices that can run our current software.
Regards Christian
Nope. Not possible.
Why would you expect your customers to hack their devices to install WM 6.5 just to run your company's software (which would kill their warranty for the device) even if it was possible?
Huh! Why would someone buy a windows phone only then to install wm 6.5 or whatever? If they wanted 6.5 they would not have bought a windows phone 7 in the first place and bought the older phones.
People seem to think phones are like PCs... They aren't.
Downgrading is easy. Bring the WP7 devices back and get HD2s or Tilts/TouchPro's, etc. Samsung Jacks or Epix if you're into that formfactor.
I would never expect anyone to do this on my request
it was actulaly the client that asked me My only reply was that I would look into it
regards Christian Andersen
Its not possible but on the bright side, there will be a big update in Jan

Is it posible to install windows mobile 6.5 on an windows phone 7 or android phone ?
I ask this because we are dropping support for windows phone but it is going to take a while for us to do the port to android and our clients are having trouble geting devices that can run our current software.

why are you dropping support for 6.5? and why not make a wp7 port, from what I've heard, it's not that hard.
There are a few reasons that we cant port to Windows Phone 7.
The main reason is the same reason why.
Firefox and Skype will not be avalible on Phone 7.
Our code base is cross platform and is written in C++.
and even if we wanted to develop in something like silverlight or XNA the lack of database and sockets would stop our application dead.
So we are dropping all windows development and are moving our mobile platform to Android and IPhone

Huh! Why would someone buy a windows phone only then to install wm 6.5 or whatever? If they wanted 6.5 they would not have bought a windows phone 7 in the first place and bought the older phones.

I second that...
The biggest point of my phone is for fpsece (psx emulator).
I want snapdragon, no slideout keyboard, and cdma (verizon customer).
I've considered the lg fathom, but I'm not sold on it.
Optimally, I'd want a proper d-pad on the front, but I think those are a thing of the past.

Touch control are koo but arent a good replacement for d-pads imo...mainly for games. Maybe one day some finds a way to have a slider cell that has dedicated game keys like a psp & physical kb like the tp2.
