I took the liberty to start a wiki for Android on the Rhodium. I dont know everything and this is my first attempt at something like this so please edit anything I screwed up

Cool! Hey I had a spare few minutes at work so I updated and re-organized some things. Go through and check my re-wordings etc to make sure I'm not spreading lies!
I'm not technically geeky enough to help out with development so I figured this is the least I can do. If we keep up with this, it can be very useful. I know the devs are so busy tinkering with things that typing up documentation can be a chore.

Thanks for updating the wiki. I to am not geeky enough

Good idea to start one on XDA. If you need more stuff like FAQs and links for the XDA wiki page, there's the Android on HTC wiki here which has some of that kind of stuff. If you'd like, I'll try to help keep the XDA one maintained with current info whenever I update the one on Android on HTC

The more help the better. I did put a link to your site too

I agree, I know that other wiki was out there...but I think it's good to have it here at XDA.
The more hands on this, the more up to date it will be.

I wanted to chip in, but I don't want to speak for every TP2 owner out there, so I had this morsel of info:
My TP2 (a Tilt2, actually) does NOT need to be plugged in prior to booting Haret to gain charging capability. XDAndroid is able to use the charger no matter what. There's just no orange light.
I was able to verify that in Spare Parts. Not sure if it's JUST the Tilt2, or if it's every TP2 out there.

loving the wiki...thanks and keep up the great work

I added The Front Buttons Keymap layout to the Wiki juts in case people Would like to know

I just want to say thanks to everyone for helping with this. I think this has turned out really well its simple, straight forward and still very informative. Keep up the good work.
also Ive been adding peoples names as they contribute. If Ive added you and you wish to be removed please let me know.

Ive added the CDMA installation instructions to the wiki. If any one sees that i've screwed them up let me know and I'll correct it or feel free to correct it yourself. I do not have a cdma version of the TP2 so this is based on my quick research on the matter

Complete Guide To Hacking, Tweaks & Mods For PDAs

Hi
I have been on this forum for awhile since I got my first PDA (XDA II) about 2 years ago but only a few months ago did I register when I got tired of waiting for other people to ask questions for the answers that I wanted.
Now I have an XDA Orbit, and all of these new terms are popping up... such as USPL, CID, etc.
Because I took a long break from the forums I need to catch up with everything, and thats very difficult since its hard to make out what people are talking about and referring to when talking on the forums. I can't really comprehend what people are saying because they are talking about things that I dont know (lol). I have looked through the wiki and it doesnt explain everything, and the acronyms section doesnt contain much.
Although the WiKi is a fantastic place where people can share their ideas as a community, I was hoping that someone could maybe upload a guide such as a text file explaining everything, including terms, what certain things are used for, etc.
One thing that confuses me is that someone managed to get a leaked WM5 rom that 02 use to unbrick devices. From what I've heard dumped ROMs are exactly the same except they cannot bypass the bootloader.. could someone explain why this is? What would be the point of the dumped ROM if it cannot bypass the bootloader - surely you wouldn't be able to flash the ROM?
This is just one of many questions I have - but by having everything explained I hope to work out answers for myself using the knowledge gained from learning all these technical terms.
Thanks for your time.
Well, as much as I know...
CID = Country ID and is used to 'lock' the device to a certain country/vendor id so that any other ROM downloaded to the device would render it useless, sometimes this screws up the bootloader and 'bricks' the device... much like a sim-lock with other carriers, but more serious.
USPL = A program used to circumvent the CID lock by providing a temporary SuperCID, so that other ROMs can be flashed without the aforementioned bricking. It has to be flashed to the device before any 'exterior' ROM download.
These terms have all probably come about after the release of B&B4 ROM by tom coden, which I must say is brill!
Hope this helps,
Pete
Thanks for the info, CID locks I assume are being put on newer PDAs since the XDA II or XDA IIs didnt have these measures?
I would guess so, although I haven't added cooked ROMs to any other device as yet...
Sorry to scrutinise every answer (lol) but does 'cooked' mean that the extended ROM has been edited? or is that baked ROM?
Not being the expert on this I assume a cooked ROM to be one that has been put together, more likely meaning one that is not from the original vendor.
E.g. HTC cooked a ROM in the first place, then O2 edited it and cooked their own etc...
Anyone? Am I right?
well from how i have seen it used over the last few days since i joined, i was assuming "cooked" meant hand made or modified by someone other than the device vendor/manufacturer/Microsoft
Yeah pretty much!
Come on everyone to organize wiki
I agree that it is very hard to get into this... I have been studying for hours these late days...
I just read the 2 necessary steps for begginers:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=FAQ
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BlueAngel_For_Beginners
I strongly recommend them!
back to the wiki... I think that we should be writting more there and try to be more organized and cross-linked.
Some kind of tree structure would help a lot.
Besides some topics (like the one for BA above) should be generalized to give basic ideas for all devices.
I am quite new to wikis but I feel that we should exploit/collaborate more this resource.
Regards.
Thanks for those links, they are very helpful! I managed to get a read of a few useful links aswell - they were in the Himalaya section...
Also, does anyone know how I can get rid of the notification that displays your balance after making/receiving a call?
e.g. Receive a call, talk or whatever, close the call, then the message: 'Your Balance Is £283.39' (lol just an example im not really that rich hehe) comes up. I was thinking I would have to tweak the registry to remove that..it must autodial the number that displays balance automatically after making a call.
Thanks

BRLE Vogue Kitchen AKU.0.7.0 [001]

This is my second attempt at making a Vogue Kitchen. The first was released on HowardForums for cricKet users.
This kitchen is based off of XIP Ported CE OS 5.2.1933 Build 18533.0.7.0. It can be used to build ROMs for the following carriers: Alltel, cricKet, Sprint, Generic.
I tried to find a happy medium for the pagepool and set it at 12MB. You can change the pagepool before you flash if you'd like. Raising the pagepool to say 16MB would increase the speed of the phone but would cause you to have less program memory. Just use the tool included in the RUU folder.
What is included:
Upgrade drivers and XIP to 1.17 ship rom
Upgrade base to CE OS 5.2.1933 Build 18533.0.7.0

Some big THANK YOUs to:
- Amoamare for his work on the Apache's cricKet extended ROM and for working to get cricKet customizations added to the Apache kitchen
- DogGuy at PPCGeeks for his work on the 6800 kitchen and answering my questions as I worked on the Vogue Kitchen based on 1.12.651.1 Sprint ROM
- Everyone DogGuy thanked for helping him get his kitchen up and running
- Sfaure at PPCGeeks for his work on the Bluetooth stack
- dcd1182 at xda-developers for his excellent work on XIP Porting of the updated CE OS and bearing with all my questions
- to0 at HowardForums for his excellent input/support and work on the serial program and his two ROMs
- jammis, berry_lthird, and jimska78 at HowardForums for helping me test the Vogue ROMs/Kitchen when I didn’t even own a Vogue which gave me a much better overall understanding of ROM/Kitchen development
-my wife's poor phone and all the abuse it took (i kept "borrowing" it from her at night)
-everyone else on these forums for your input and support
DISCLAIMER: As with any other custom ROM/Kitchen, there is a risk of damaging your device. I offer no warranties in the event this happens. Please do realize, however, that there haven't been any permanent casualties reported. So far, the worst that has been reported is getting stuck in bootloader mode (multi-color screen). If this happens to you, don't freak out. Head over to PPCGeeks, and read this: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=9229. If you're unable to get past a specific splash screen, you may need to manually put your device into bootloader mode and install a different ROM.
A Stock Sprint Ship ROM can be found here:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_WWE_1.12.651.1_2.13.00_SPC_NV133_Ship.exe
Your phone will need to be unlocked using the Vogue Unlocker by ImCoKeMaN of PPCGeeks. This will allow you to flash custom ROMs. Please don't PM me asking how to use this. If you don't know, you probably shouldn't be doing this.
ftp://ppcgeeks:[email protected]/Vogue/Users/ImCoKeMaN/Vogue_unlocker.exe
Now that that's out of the way... here's the link; you'll need WinRAR:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/BRLE_Vogue_Kitchen_AKU_0_7_0_01212008.zip
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTE: You will be prompted for a serial once you install and boot into any ROM made from this kitchen. You will not be able to do anything without a serial (aside from flash a new ROM).
Here's how the serial process works: You'll be shown a code when you first boot. Send that code to the email displayed on your phone screen and I'll send you a corresponding serial to unlock the ROM.
I will give out one free serial per ROM per username on HowardForums, XDA-dev, or PPCGeeks. This is more a test of something to0 and I have been playing with rather than anything for profit as well as preventing people from selling our work. In order to obtain a serial, you must have at least 15 posts, with the majority of them being at least a little bit constructive. Serials will not change as long as you keep the same phone number so write them down for future use.
I seem to have broken the ##3424 code in some aspects of this build but not for all carriers. I will work on it and hopefully post an update in a couple days. In the meantime, make sure you change your SPC and configure your MDN MIN and all other EPST settings before flashing if you haven't done so already. ##778 and all other codes work.
I will be around if you need a code. PLEASE NO PMs. Only email the address displayed on your phone screen or use the contact info below. Or you can contact to0 (aka mooingrhinocero in the cricKet section of HowardForums for a Vogue code)
AIM: mrfluffball
AIM: to0g
Hofo: mooingrhinocero
If you choose a carrier autorun, your serial may try to run at the same time. Don't worry about it. Just let your autorun finish and it will auto soft-reset for you. If you don't have an autorun, just tap the "OK" and the device will reset.
Make sure to use ReadMe.pdf and Enjoy Flashing with the Vogue Kitchen!! If you change your pagepool, please leave feedback in a couple days so we can compare results. Amoamare, I'd love to include your cricKet theme if it's finished and you are willing to share. Please let me know. dcd1182 and sd_matto, if you have any suggestions or feedback I would be grateful for them. Please post any bugs and if you have an OEM you would like me to test and include in the next build please let me know. I will be working on cleaning up the Sprint and Alltel junk this week and at some point creating support for Bell and Telus ROMs. If anyone who is well versed in ROM building wishes to assist me, I would welcome the help.
I can't wait for this!!!
Verizon just released their phone with GPS... with that included this would be a perfect ROM ( already is )
Thanks!!

sounds like a good list, blee.

I appreciate all the work that you guys put into these ROMs but I feel compelled to point out that, at the time of my post, you only have 14 posts on this forum. To me that is a bit hypocritical. True, it is your ROM and therefore your rules, but that just does not jive with me.
Though I only have 4 measly posts (until this one) I think that you shouldn't have to have a minimum post amount just to try a kitchen. But again, it is your work, so you get to make the rules...
And I would be frustrated more if I wanted to try your work out. But I am happy with my Touch modded the way it is, so I gues sI am just speaking out for other people who are in a similar post position as me but did want to try out your kitchen.

I can appreciate where you are coming from. I tend to post more at Howard Forums and occasionally PPCGeeks. Like I said in the first post, the serial thing is more a test than anything else. I'm not looking to make a profit off of it. If you have very few posts but think you are a legitimate contributor to the forums and want to try my kitchen then by all means email me or catch me on AIM and let's get you a serial. This is mainly geared to weed out the people who were selling ROMs other people had made and posted over at Howard Forums. dcd1182 does this out of enjoyment as do I. I just don't think its fair (not to mention copyright issues) for someone to go out selling beta material.
Thanks for including Bell/Telus config in your kitchen?
It will allow us to customise our "own".

exactly, how come someone with only 15 posts can copy a senior members (with over 300 posts) work and take credit for it
its not like that, my kitchen uses the great work of other people and if i didnt want others using my stuff i wouldnt post it. i just dont think the thanks section here is exactly proportionate.

I'm not looking to steal anyone's work. DCD did an excellent job porting. That was something I didn't even know how to do three weeks ago and am just beginning to understand.
But that being said, I've given credit numerous times through this thread for his work. Maybe you guys can break apart OEMs and separate out the parts of a ROM in a matter of hours but I know how much time I took (since December 1, 2007 when I did a very shabby cricKet kitchen COMPLETELY BY MYSELF based on 1.12.651.1) to learn rather than just try to leech.

I personally broke down the OEM folders and a few of the SYS folders in this ROM. I went through and made numerous registry changes, wrote provxml files, and a few OEMs. Not to mention the hours/weeks I spent testing the ROMs and correcting errors and duplicate files. To say that I've completely stolen someone's work is unfair. If you feel more credit is due to you or to DCD then by all means take it. I sure appreciate your input, support, and feedback and respect your advice a great deal. Probably more than you realize. This is a hobby for me. I just figured others could enjoy it even if it's not as great a release as DCD's final release will be. I'm not looking for it to be. He provided a base and I'm learning and taking on the challenge of knowing the in's and out's of XIP Porting so I can do it myself in the future. But if you're going to complain of not giving credit where its due then please at least respect the time I've put into it.
I'm proud of the small role I've played in this kitchen especially the personal knowledge I gained but DCD if you'd rather I pull this kitchen down, I'll gladly do it. I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. Just trying to give back what little I can/have learned with help to/from everyone in these online phone forum communities. Please don't take this the wrong way.

dcd,
This is exactly why I didn't take much of a look at this kitchen. It just seemed like something wasn't quite on the level here. I was worried about using anything that that didn't have your stamp of approval. Then when I saw a post in your ROM thread annoucing the kitchen I really got concerned.

I'm not even going to waste my time saying a whole lot except that you and I both know all the times I've helped you out before when you PMed so please don't sit there and unnecessarily flame me. If you don't like the thread and it "concerns" you then move on and don't use it. Wait for his release if it makes you more comfortable. But don't go just to say something is not on level when you haven't even used it much less read all the thank you's I made in the ReadMe talking about BUILDING UPON OTHER'S WORK.
blee,
I may have distorted what I was saying. First, I don't want to take credit from what you have done. You obviously know way more about ROM development than what I do. It is also obvious that you spent much time working on this kitchen. For that I commend you.
This is just kind of a touchy thing. You get into an issue of intellectual content intrusion. Unfortunity you kind of walk a fine line. I have seen this happen before in other forums where good people leave the forum because of stupid arguments. I would much rather see you two work together and share the brain trust as opposed to losing either one of your developments. It appears to me that we lack large levels of cooperation because of what ever reason. It would great to see big group colabratives. I bet we could really so some major developments with talented people who contribute to this site.
So, in closing my comments made earlier were only to say from looking from the outside in, I knew we were running into a situation where two knowledgable people were not going to see eye to eye. I honestly don't know either one of you, but I hope both of you will be open enough to discuss this, work together, and continue to be contributing members of this community.
Good luck to all!

Yes I agree blee has help me on more than one occasion. My comments were not thought out before typing in my first post. My only concern is for the good of the forum. I am removing my original post as it was typed unfairly. I really just want everyone who comes to this forum to continue to grow from eachothers experiences and findings. I have always thought that's the point of the forum in the first place is to share knowledge. So blee, I apologize to you for over reacting or reacting at all. It's really none of my business.
I hope all contributors keep up their great work in this forum so dopes like me can continue to learn.
yeh i think everyone needs to relax a little its jsut a kitchen/ROM its not life or death here. Its great we have a kitchen and if DCD wants to release his own and do different things cool, we have 2 choices! Its all for the good of the community. As long as no ones making money off eachother than i think everyone needs to take a chill and relax IMO
and i think the serial from the developer is a great idea be it a little bit of a pain (maybe one day can be an automated email or such). But thats what you have to do when theres dishonest people in the world who want to make a buck off your work. I think its a good idea to explore to keep it from being sold on ebay by scammers.
No hard feelings. I stand by my post. If dcd wishes that I remove the kitchen from this forum then I will do so. If I don't hear anything then please let's get this thread back on track so we can make it better as a community. I need your help and feedback which doesn't happen unless you actually try the ROMs.
One thing that's already been mentioned is that AL_Bkgd.brn is in each of the following three folders. If you select a home plugin and the action screen together you will have a conflict running BuildOS.
OEM_brle_Cube_Icons_Blue
OEM_brle_Cube_Icons_Yellow
OEM_HTC_Action_Screen
This is resolved by:
Just manually delete that file from one of the folders either Blue/Screen or Yellow/Screen before you flash or delete it from all three and place it in OEMAPPS. I'll move it back to the OEMAPPS folder for next time.

I will tell you right now why there is not that much cooperation here... The Touch is not a cheap phone in any sense and not many people are willing to accept the risks when it comes to flashing a custom ROM to their device so there goes your testers and there goes your potential users.
On another Note...
You know it's almost kinda funny how a bunch of grown men and women are arguing over this. I know a lot of work goes into creating a kitchen and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't know the first thing about it but to argue over this is pointless, just work together and make an even better kitchen for EVERYONE to use.
So what if some jackass is trying to sell custom ROMs that they made using this kitchen... That's ignorant and disrespectful to the author in many ways but it is their business. They're going to do what they're going to do one way or another so why make the honest people have to pay for the idiots doing this? Right now you have it set up so that you need a serial just to use the ROM they build using your kitchen. As a veteran, I can tell you that this is almost like basic training... Everybody is getting punished because of a couple, or just one, idiot doing something stupid.
I spent A LONG TIME over in the Wizard forum here on Xda-Developers and once I used a kitchen to build my own ROM, I've never had to wait for a reply to an email I had no other choice but to send to use MY custom work just because I used someone else's as a base to start. I take no credit for anything you have done but why should I be penalized because I want to try your work? And to make it even worse... It sometimes takes several attempts to get a custom ROM to be just the way you want it and if I have to pay for each serial I need after the first one, there's only one other ROM I will be flashing and that is the original OEM ROM from Sprint and HTC. I work 80 hours a week and now I can't even do the one thing I enjoy doing in my free time because some guy thinks its a cool idea to pick and choose who gets to use his kitchen and who doesn't using a serial number... Ridiculous...
Last time I checked, the OEM ROM is free... The unlocker is free... There has never been a serial for anything I have ever flashed or used unless it was SHAREWARE and I DAMN sure will not pay for a custom OS when I can use the one provided on my phone for free.
I think you are in over your head trying to restrict usage of this kitchen to only people approved by yourself. If you are going to post this here and make it public, remove the restrictions so people can use it as they please and start posting custom ROMs to the forum. Yes there are going to be dishonest people who use your kitchen to try to make a few dollars but then again I have seen that over in the Wizard forum as well and not one of the people over there who have ever created a kitchen have done this... If you are not going to make this public and free to 100% of the people here who might want to use it, then you should take it down and request the thread be removed because that is not how things are done in this forum. Just look around... You'll see... Just look at your feedback to this thread and that should be enough...
Having said that, Have a nice day.
Dan.
But whatever... It's your work.

Blee, I have to agree with RainFreak... The minimum post thing is not in the spirit of cooperation. I TOTALLY agree with you about someone taking your work and selling it! Those guys should be ferreted out and banned. Most of the good people on this site and others are here to collaborate and learn. Placing artificial hoops to jump through is counter-productive to the spirit of this forum...
With tremendous respect, but I thought you would like to know.

Backing Up Everything

Apologies if this appears elsewhere but I have looked without success. If it does then a link to the solution would be great.
Basically I found this site a few weeks ago and since then have been tinkering with my phone. I've tried various roms, added different programs, played about with the settings and so on. Today I have finally got it just how I want it. It is overclocked to run quickly but safely. The today screen is perfect. It contains everything I need including my huge list of contacts. And my theme is spot-on. However usually in life when everything is right something big and hairy appears out of nowhere and dumps on you. Its got to the point where I panic every time I turn it on just in case it crashes and I need to start all over again.
My question therefore is if anyone knows of a utility (or can give detailed instructions) to completely back up the phone. Right down to the user settings, theme and contacts. If possible maybe even to create a rom image of my phone so that if it does ever crash I can reinstall the whole thing from one simple file. I assume this sort of thing must be possible because Kavana and Ricky produce such wonderful roms with various programs, etc pre-installed.
Can it be done? And if so - can it be done by an enthusiastic amateur or do you need to be a tech guru? I should add I don't mind paying if I need to buy a piece of commercial software to achieve this.

Did you even bother to search google for "smartphone backup" ? The very first link that comes up, takes you right to the software you say you need. I apologize for being harsh, but I hate the lack of common sense...
An option
Not sure about the cooked 6.1 Roms. Maybe someone else might know or have tried.

I use this and it's well worth it.
if u just mean the saved registry values and what not u can always export the registry so that way if u have to hard reset the phone or if a new amazingly wowlike rom is released and u NEED to flash u can always import the registry values of the chomes and it'll be the way u left it (thats what I do for my myfaves and my programs)

No problem, and you are entitled to your opinion. however its replies like that which stop people making posts to forums like this. Everyone has to start somewhere, and one man's obvious "common sense" answer is another man's dilemma.
As for using google... yep I could have done that but google links to hundreds of pages, some owned by people trying to sell software which obviously means they won't be objective. Others have methods which could damage a phone and because I don't know the writers how do I know which methods to trust? Ergo I decided to come to site I know, with people whose technical knowhow I trust, and to search the forum and then ask them for advice. To me, that is common sense. Isn't that one of the reasons that places like this exist? So non techheads can ask guys like you for help?
No offence intended and, for what its worth, you are one of the guys whose advice on this forum has helped me countless times. So thank you for that no matter what. Without your posts I'd never have got this far in the first place! I mean that.
As for the other replies... thanks guys. I will look into the registry stuff. And I will certainly check out the software link. If I do find some info on google, I hope you folks will help me pick the best method to use and avoid bad advice.
Thanks again.
GS
Okay the Sprite software is perfect. And now I've checked it out maybe my question was a stupid one. Still, its nice to have a recommendation from an independent source. I've been burnt in the past by bad google advice.
Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time.

ps. read this first, this will help you on the way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
So basicaly this isn't actually a forum to help people who dont know anything about it find out about apps which have been created by people here. How unhelpful.

No, what you'll find is that all the information you most likely need is already on this forum somewhere. Take a day or two, search, read, look at the wiki, and you will be in a much better position to understand what you can do and want to do with your phone.
I did the above and have flashed custom roms, various applications, registry tweaks, edited dlls and what not and am now very happy with my phone.
Yeah i have looked through theese for days. But there is just so much, especialy when i know so little. It is very hard to pick out whats good and whats not.
I was hoping uses of HD touch could just post what they feel is the best things that they use. And from that i could work out what to use.
But it appears people would rather turn their nose up because i dont know anything about moding theese.
It's not that i dont want to help you with finding apps and mods and tweaks, or helping you understand your device better, it the way you assume that someone displays every app on a plate so you can install without breaking a sweat.
All apps that are around for the HD are fully reviewed and archived in the wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442663
This is a thread that you could have found easyly, since it's a wiki page and has been stickied in this subforum.
Also on the wiki, theres much info on upgrading and modding the HD's rom, search an you will find, not ask and takeoff without understanding.
We'd like to help if you have a problem, and you searched for it, and stated out what youve done by yourself to solve it.
The first thing youll have to do is find your own answers, then ask your question.
EDIT: In fact of the itunes music issue, you can play AAC files on the HD, this info i've found in the manual, RTFM!
Gr. Bram
i ahve looked through that several times actually. Ive identifyed some things. But generaly they arnt reviewed and ther is so many aplications that do the same job on there i dont know wahts best and i presume you guys do.
Its quite simple, i dont know whats good. You guys do, i ask instead of trawling through lists installing them all and trying them my self. Its not really unreasonable tbh. Ive never been met by so much hostility to a simple question that i presume is on everyones mind who gets a touch hd and is new to it all.
:EDIT:
also, what is manilla? i see it around alot.

Search my friend, whats the main word that pops off your screen whan you search for manila? Yes, Its touchflo3d! Manila what the HTC codeword when they developed the app, and it still uses manila in the registry and such.
Gr. Bram
ahh i see, so does that mean roms that dont have "manilla" in the title dont use touch flo 3d?

Due to your evident experience level with HTC products I would suggest that you refrain from playin about with roms until you are at least onto your second device.. stick to easy to install software for the moment and gain an understanding of how your device works.
i would ahve thought there would be a guide i could follow and it all be fairly simple. I have flashed bios's on my pc, overclocked etc. Im not new to learning such things. I have just never done it on a phone before.
I presume i can always reflash to the orginal if it goes wrong? But yeah i will be getting used to the phone first before i do do any flashing. But i definitly intend of flashing the rom. I got this phone with the intent on playing around with it and learning about it all.

Well... do that. Asking questions like "which apps should I install?" or "which ROM is the best?" doesn't make much more sense than asking "what is the tastiest food?" You will get as many different answers as there are people out there. In my oppinion this forum is for "how to do..." questions and not for "what to do..." - if you have any of the first kind, there is a good chance that someone will answer it.
As far as the ROMs go - every ROM more or less reflects the cooker's usage of the phone, so you WILL become 'flash-o-holic', because everyone has unique pattern of usage and you will think that the next ROM will be better suited for you, and the next one, and the next one... but the truth is that none of them is 100% tailored for you. My advice is - read carefully the sticky threads (there is a reason they are pinned above all else), always be sure you are not doing something irreversible and respect the work of others. And congratulations for the excelent choise of hardware .
Yeah i understand what your saying. Just like a direction to head at really.
Im going to try dutties first and seems to be very popular and i hear it speeds the phone up quite a bit.
And ahhh cant wait, so annoying i had to wait till friday to order it with weekend and bankholiday monday to wait! it was out of stock for weeks!

If you dont know what you are doing you can turn your phone into an expensive paperweight..
mmm ok, shall defo make suer i got a good guide to follow first.
Im currently trying to find out what "cabs" are exacly. I see them menchened everywhere but it doesn't appear to be given a definition in the wiki. Might have missed it though. Not really sure what to type in google as typing "cab" doesn't really give the results i want.
Anyone got any links to good guilds, how too's, how they got started etc?

A .cab file is an socalled "cabinet file" wich is used in windows for ages to install stuff. In desktop windows you dont see them anymore couse they are camouflaged by a .exe of .msi file, but they are used still today.
On windows mobile, all programs are installed by cab, so basically for you, a cab is an installer.
Gr. Bram
ive been searching for months and still havnt found any decent programs, the software wiki is useless as it doesnt even tell you what half the programs are or do!

Okay, if you're going to be nasty, I'll return the favour. If you're going to buy something as technically advanced as the Touch HD, and you have no clue (your word) as to what to do with it, perhaps you should stick with a less complicated device.
Second, most questions have already been answered in these forums. Do a simple search. If that, too, is beyond you, then this site, and others like it, are too advanced for you.
Stick with a basic flip-phone and you should be happy.

Learning ROM Development - Where to even begin??

So I’ve been a member here since the Droid X days and I’ve learned a lot over the years with each device I’ve had but I never really looked into creating ROMs (I always wanted to learn but never got to it).
I know it’s going to be a learning process that takes some time but I’m looking for help on where I should start. Before anyone posts a whole bunch of random looks I’ll say right now that I am a complete beginner when it comes to this stuff. I’ve looked at a bunch on threads and it’s so overwhelming being completely new so I don’t know what’s relevant and what’s not.
From the research I’ve done today I learned about a program called Android Kitchen which from my understanding was used to create and compile ROMs. From what I found it looks like the original dev stopped updating it back in 2013. In the ChefCentral>Android forum it looks like someone else took over and maintains it for Linux. I also came across a variant there called “Assayyed_Kitchen”. Is this the same program just made by someone else? I don’t know you tell me? lol
I also plan to learn some Java in the coming months and Android App development. I don’t have a huge interest in making apps right now but who knows maybe I will down the road. I just figured learning Java can only help with learning to make ROMs? Do I even need to know any of it for this kind of stuff?
So basically I’m looking for some guidance on where to start as a complete beginner in learning ROM development. Even someone taking the time to type out a few basic steps explains what the whole process even involves from start to finish would help a lot. For example..
1. Download source
2. Open in this program and blah blah
3. Do your magic and customize this and that
4. Do some more magic and pack it back up and flash
Just understanding the steps would make a huge difference because then I know what to research and what to learn. Hoping this thread gets some good info in it and maybe at some point I can create a complete noob friendly guide in the OP to help others like me who don’t know where to begin. To anyone that takes the time to reply and help out.. THANK YOU!

Here is my blog on the topic. I've also got some interesting* Android Security Research on there that acts as a good Segway into reverse engineering, etc.
The one I am linking is for 6.0.x, and I'll be updating it to 7.x soon, though, the only real difference is the branch you checkout (you should understand what this means after reading my guide), and you'll need to install OpenJDK8 instead of the linked 7 (as 7.x requires this).
