I'm just curious. I know what the recommendations are, and mostly I do remove the cards, but I want to know, how do you flash your phones .

(Assuming you're talking about flashing a rom using the USB-connected-to-PC method.)
I never remove my card when flashing an OS-rom and nothing has ever gone wrong for me in dozens of rom-flashes.
YMMV.
I read that you should remove the sim so a phone call or text message won't interrupt the flash.

I've read the same, and that's obviously the best way to insure that never happens...but I would think that turning the radios off while in the old ROM would be enough at that point, and the new ROM wouldn't receive any signal until the flashing is complete anyway...?
It's probably like the old adage about letting your PC sit for a minute (long enough for the capacitors to naturally discharge) before powering it back on during a reboot....it's not really necessary in the majority of instances, but it's never a bad idea to do, just to be safe

Turning off the radio before flashing has been my approach, too. If it was easier to remove the sim card I might do so, same goes for the sd card...but it's too hard...and I prefer the excitement of living on the edge anyway.
There's no real point, IMO. You're not on the network when flashing with the SPL, so there's no reason to remove the SIM, and flashing via MicroSD is an accepted method of flashing ROMs, so that's also out of the question. The last post I've seen from a major PPC hacker to remove both cards was made years ago, and I don't really think it applies anymore, especially with HardSPL. It's pretty hard to brick with HardSPL, so I don't bother removing the cards ever. Hell, I don't even go into airplane mode. The only time I've ever had to remove the SIM was when I upgraded HardSPL on my old Kaiser, because the SSPL wouldn't flash a new SPL until both cards were removed. I have yet to brick a device, and I don't ever remove cards
There are no interactions going on b/t the rom flashing and you having a sim inside the phone, I keep my SD in my leo never took it out before.
Thank you guys. I think I will not remove them anymore, because it's just so annoying . You don't even enter a PIN until the flash is completed anyway...
TyTN->Kaiser->Touch->Touch Pro->Xperia->Touch Pro 2... I dont know how many flashes in total, but always had my cards in... Also few flashes with i600 (backup phone)
Same here,
5 years flashing with both inside with no prob

I used to take them out, but now that I have set up my UC, I don't know why I would want to remove my SD.

I think it can support around 10.000 flashes, so be happy, don't warry!!

Well... that depends. Nelkz said that he has flashed his phone more times than he can remember. Assume he has a photographical memory and he could recall till 10.001 previous flashes, that would mean he would have crossed the 10.000 flashlimit.
the flash storage also have a limited number of writes before it too dies
so passing these phones on to kids and grankids is prob out of the question
and the storage will die long before the flash with the rom in it

In 16 years my kids will probably laugh their pants of if I wanted to pass this (then prehistorical) device on to them.
Consider this: even under minimal use, like when you save a document and even dial a number, there would be something written to the device's flash rom.
The OS part is usually not being written at all except when you are really flashing it.
I think the OS flash rom can survive longer than the part of rom that make up your program storage, in theory.
Of course, in practice the flashes nowadays have mechanism to mark bad block, and even wear levelling in place.
Ok long story short. Strange behavior with my first and second Dash. Freezing all the time and freezing during bootup often. I switch to Rose 1.7 Ricky and Stylez. Which by the way is the best thing out there for this phone in my opinion. Still cant get it working. I end up buying another Dash used off craigslist. Install Rose 1.7 and I love my phone again for a month until today.
Freezing on bootup everytime. Cant get the thing back to a point where I can flash it again. So thats my first question....what the heck do i do now?
Secondly, Im on my second Dash with the same issues. I take such good care of the thing I cant figure out what Im doing wrong. Never drop it, no moisture etc etc.
I do soft resets over and over. Just sits on the HTC logo, sometimes the Rose Ricky Stylez DOS looking screen. I read somewhere that you can get USB access by holding the camera buttom and I did get the tricolor screen but I must be missing something, the phone and cpu give no indication anything is connected.
Anyway if anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.
Also big huge standing ovation for Ricky and Stylez for taking that awful piece of crap firmware tmobile puts on the dash for the USA market. Holy cow...is that thing a turd.
rich.
2 Things to check:
How much free space do you have?
Are you using a microsd card?
I have a 1gig micro that I remove anytime I have issues...like now. There isnt even 10 pics on it and thats it. As far as memory on the phone I wish I could tell you I cant get it booted. I save nothing on the phones memory. All contacts on SIM. Unless of course something is automatically stored there that Im not thinking of.
I just remembered something else. When I view the phones processes the GWES.exe always has a big red circle with an X in it.

I'm sorry you're having that many problems with your phones, but don't you think if you're having the same problems with two different phones that the issues might have been made by you? Now I don't want you to get me wrong , I'm not trying to sound like a prick and tell you that is all your fault, but maybe is something you overlooked when you were flashing that is giving you this many problems.
Now I've heard very good things about the rose rom and stylez and I chat quite a bit, but I've heard a few things to make me skeptical about changing my rom, which I'm very happy with. I'm using Rickwatts V24 very modded out.
Have you tried a hard reset? You bring the phone back to when you flashed it. Here's how. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3263295&postcount=4
If you try the usb/ camera button method, you can only install the official rom (wm 5.0, 6.0) is the piece of crap tmobile puts out in the U.S. Here's how . Read this thread to learn how to do the bootloader usb/camera way. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=484579&highlight=hard+reset good luck.
First have you done a hard-reset? You say that you have tryed to reflash, have you tryed flashing stock ROM?
I'm unaware in over 2000+ downloads of 1.7 alone that there is any issue with regards boot up, but am aware this happens to users no matter what ROM they use.
roloracer says user error, i can't state 100% it is but i can state 99% of cumers issues rely on this "trying to use humour"
Please reflash to stock via bootloader then flash any WM6.1 ROM to see if an issue "not going to say which because i make no money from the ROM so don't have to sell it to you"
I hope you get it sorted, percervier and all will be well.
May seem like an odd question but on my old Kaiser (Windows phone I know) I started to get block errors after flashing Android to NAND repeatedly. The developers and gurus there said it was a known problem and that it would continue to worsen, at which point I stopped
The question is, is it possible to over flash the G2?
I KNOW... different device/hardware/OS and all but I confess to being concerned. Is there any chance that repeated flashing is going to cause long term issues?
Don't think you can but I would like a straight answer from someone who knows what there talking about also

No. Things just age with use.
It's like the same question with computers, If i never shut it down will it kill my computer? If i reformat my hard drive too much will it kill it? no. while many factors do need to be take into consideration but not so much with phones, And most electronics do have hours powered on stats and each device does have that. but as far as phones i really couldnt tell you.
flash memory can be rewritten 100,000,000 times..... so the answer is yes... (thats a real fact btw)

Once a week....
Thanks to all for the answers. I guess I've got a long way to go to 1,000,000,000 but if devs keep putting out new and improved ROMs I'll keep flashing them.
Good to know the concensus is that, even at one a week I have a few years worth
NAND is typically good to at least tens or hundreds of thousands of read/writes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory
So even for flashaholics, the frequency of flashing is really not much of a concern. Sure, there is some tiny possibility that memory can randomly fail at any time. And the more you do it, the higher the chance of that occuring. But its not significant, and I wouldn't worry about it.
Even when talking about flash memory on things like SSD drives, that get re-written much more frequently, I believe the mean failure time is often spoken of as being at least 10 years, and often much longer due to various wear-leveling techniques.

Eh I disagree. Reformatting too much can be a problem with flash memory. My mother, for example, always used to reformat her camera SD card instead of just erasing all the images normally (I know, facepalm). Over only two or three years, her pictures were unable to be developed because the SD card was corrupt. The gold strips on it looked like they had been beat to hell. It wasn't a cheap brand either, it was a Sandisk.
Although, with phones I don't think it's a problem. Lets face it, most of us won't have the same phone for over two years, many won't even have them past one year. We won't be using our phones long enough to get to that point.

I don't know how you thought that reformatting something could physically damage the gold contacts on it. That's probably because she took the card out and put it back in a ton of times.

Yeah, it sounds like some physical abuse, and not just from reformatting it. I've swapped SD and Micro-SD cards in and out of devices and card readers countless times, and never had any damage to the contacts. Mama might be inserted the card incorrectly, or to forcefully.
In any case, that example is just anecdotal. The failure could have been for any random reason. Memory can just stop working one day. Doesn't mean that formatting it was the cause.
Wow....didnt even know that overflashing is possible. ...... . But still on a low number i will get there in less than 10 years (maybe)
So my GNEX is arriving tuesday the 7th and I wanted to know what are the first things I need to do once I place my AT&T sim in it. I have unlimited data provisioned for the HSPA+ ( from my SGS2) so anything I need to add, or change on my account or phone settings? Also what do I download to find out which version I have Yaku or otherwise?
The very first thing I would do with a new device is to check for any defects.
Dead pixels, dim lights, blue/purple colour screens, working buttons/touch (no random touch responses), correct volume. You can use GN offcial update checker (I think that's the right name) from the market to check the version of your phone.
And if you plan on putting custom roms and stuff on it unlock the bootloader before you start putting stuff on it or it will all just get deleted again
i will probably root and unlock the boot just in case I want to add roms. Will do on the checks as I always do is that the correct name for the app to check which firmware its running?
Get a good screen protector.
Back up your EFS
I have also recived my GSM unlocked GN today, can someone please send me a page with informtion WHY i should boot and unlock and root and all thos stuff and then another page of HOW to to it in a safe way without getting my phone ****ed up. Thank you very much. A Personal Massage will be even better.
I dont wanna open a new topic
You should unlock your phone before you save any data on it, why? because it will erase everything you have saved on the phone when you unlock.
Why do you want root? you can backup all your data then before flashing a custom rom at a later date.
As to how, i was planning on doing a little tutorial sometime today as i found all the info i needed scattered in about 3-4 different posts on various websites.

This. Once you start rooting/ROMing - you realize just how much more you can squeeze out of a device. They're all made within certain parameters - certain tolerances. What ships is in a very "safe" area. Kind of like all cars in the country shipping to California emission codes. They're held back in performance to make the safest, most stable device you can buy -- the phones that is ;-) . There's nothing really wrong with staying stock. You just aren't getting all you can. There's a really good tool for unlocking, rooting and backing up things here on XDA. It's what I used. Just follow the instructions to the letter -- and read, read, READ everything you can before doing it. Once you're rooted - and have a custom recovery - make a nandroid (just the term used for "backup") -- in case a future ROM flash messes up. It's not impossible - but REALLY, actually bricking your phone is fairly rare. Bootloops (where the startup screen starts over and over) is NOT bricked -- if you can get into your recovery and flash your nandroid backup - you'll be fine.

Yes, better safe then sorry. You really should spend the extra money, even up to $25 dollars worth to get a quality screen protector. The most common issues right now with screen protector is the ability to cover the screen, and the orange peel effect. Right now, XO skins is your best bet for a wet install, and I've heard some good things about martin fields.
sorry borrow your thread awhile, I'am gonna to buy this phone but no stock now @@
and today I saw magazine discuss about this phone, and the author of the magazine say that got quite a lot people report that galaxy nexus get random reboot, even on standby mode on stock ROM
furthermore, after upgraded to 4.0.2 also still got bug, haven't fix all
and also for the volume, this one I heard and know before, which download volume+ to fix
so, there are the problem which make me hold on to buy Galaxy Nexus now
*I know there no 100% perfect things on this world, but I just don't want the randomly reboot, this things very annoying since on my current phone which is LG optimus one
should I go for it ??
Maybe noob question, but should we back this up still? If so with what method? I know I lost mine once on my s3, so like to have everything handy before going flash happy on my one. I spent over a year on my sammy so a lot of this htc stuff it's unfamiliar to me. Hate to break my phone I love it!!!

You should keep a record of it somewhere. It is less important to keep track of now though because of the SIM card. Your account used to be associated with a MEID, now it is associated with your SIM ID.

When I lost it on my s3 lost all data, even with my SIM card. I tried restoring a known working backup, nothing worked. Ultimately I had to odin back to stock. Then used synergys script to back up my imei. Didn't know if it would work in this phone as well as I don't want to lose it again.
