Hi,
sorry i am quite new to the whole rom upgrade issue.
Recently i installed Pauls Mod for the Desire. After installing some Apps i did a Backup via Titanium Backup (Batch -> Backup all user apps + system Data).
Then i installed the Ahmgsk modified version (wiped all -> installed rom). Then i did a restore via Titanium Backup.
Some of the Apps do not work and i had to reinstall them (Google Earth, all Apps which need Superuser Permission, Swype etc..).
All Settings (APN, Google Accounts etc..) were gone.
Is there any way to backup and restore some of these settings? Do i really have to do a full wipe before installing the new rom?
thx in advance.
also awaiting an answer to this.

Come from WM and this is the type of noob question I now need to know the answer to!
Would use UC for WM - are the settings held on the storage card somewhere??
I guess most of the basic reading is going to be somewhere in the older Android device forums.
Would be great if someone would put some links in a sticky to 'what new Android users really need to know!'
I need to get edumacated!
i think nandriod does this trick afaik

Hello and happy holidays to everyone.
I am running VaelPak 3.0 and have removed some unwanted apps that I don't use/need.
If I flash an updated version of the ROM, I will get all these apps back. My question is, is there a way I can save my phone's image as it is now so that I do not have to remove those apps manually again the next time?
Any advice will be highly appreciated.
cant you just backup your nand??
or use titanium backup..

I do nand backups, but haven't restored them yet.
Won't it just put the old apps (backed up apps) back in place and not delete the new apps that the updated ROM added?
Thanks,
i removed all the app i didnt want with titanium back up THEN did a nand backup and it restored from the point i was (without the things i wanted) so i guess you can do that..
just take the nand backup you already have and save that backup on your comp in case something ever happens..
then do another one with the corrections and updates you did and that the one without all the bulk..
thats what i did..

I will try that and update the post on how it works out.
Thanks.
They will come back forget doing nands or titanium that's the hard way. Just get an app that allows you to remove apps from your phone. I use this simple app called root manager its easy as pie and I just remove what I don't want again. Titanium can also do this I think but its not user friendly for me lol

yea titanium confused me at first too.. a little to complicated and still is..
i was just saying if u wanted to do the nand backup of your new and improved system its easier..
and since we on the topic of backups and removal..
any apps that can backup ALL apps and data and restore them because im about to unroot to root using Toast method so i have nand unlocked..
while I haven't tried this...so try at your own risk. In the .zip file, clean out everything you don't want and leave only the stuff you want new, or updated. That SHOULD keep them from installing to the phone when flashing. once those are gone, just flash like normal.

Isn't the file signed? I will have to sign it again, right?
I think I will just write a script and run it after flashing a new ROM every time.
Thanks,
I don't know if it would remove the signature or not...worth a try. Let me look real quick. there's already a tool out for signing files...at least it would save you some key strokes.

Hey folks
I am new to all this with rooting, flashing and so on, and i think it's exciting and awesome, so thanks to all the develepors, and the other guys who keeps this scene running!
I got a few questions about TI backup, that i need answered.. I have searched around the forum for a while, and can't find any exact answers to my questions..
With my phone rooted.. What would you guys go after, the free or the full version of TI backup, and why?
Whats the differences between the free and full?
I have also searched a bit round on the official users guide, and Wiki on TI backups homepage, but it's confusing i think..
And how is it with backup, flashing other roms and so on?
I now have the HoneySense rom flashed, and TI backup..
Can i take a backup of my sms messages, my app's, and their settings, and then flash another rom, and get the **** moved to the new rom?
And how does that work in practice?
- do i have to install TI backup on the new rom after flashing, or is there anyway that it could be installed with the rom, or how works that?
Finally, i got a question about ClockworkMod, since i can't find much information about the app on their homepage..
I got CWM installed, but what is is exactly? Is it somekind of bootloader, or?
And will CWM dissapear from my phone when flashing?
When i flashed to HoneySense, i did it with CWM, but that was also some kind of bootloader?
I really appreciate your time, and your willing to help
Thank you

Titanium Backup Pro has more features included, but i didnt need them already... if you use it to backup and restore your system and apps and you decide to flash a different ROM, you should only restore Apps, not Data... thats a choice you can make in Restore menue... i'm talking about your User-Apps, i never restored System-Apps or Data after a clean install of an ROM...
Greets Steffen
Thanks for the answer already
Do you know more about it?
Could any action taken in TI backup cause the phone to crash and brick?

The Pro version because you can batch restore, otherwise you have to restore apps individually.
You can restore the apps data as well, but not recommended across totally different roms, definitely do not restore system apps and data, anything in red. This might include SMS data (red), up to you to try. Other alternatives would be use other app such as GoSMS Pro (free) Edit: has backup option, or My Backup Root.
There might be a chance of force closes etc, if you've not followed the above, but never heard of anyone actually bricking their device. Worst case is having to restore a full backup made in ClockworkMod Recovery.
I use both CWM and TB Pro prior to flashing any new ROM. Also keep a copy on the PC just in case the sdcard has a bad day.
Don't forget to wipe dalvik cache in CWM after TB restore and reboot. It may take a few minutes to boot up, but don't worry.
If your Market doesn't show all your apps, try deleting market cache, reboot clearing dalvik, and use TB Pro to "restore market links" found somewhere in the menu. If still doesn't show all, TB recommends try downloading a new app then check again.
Edit: CWM is just a custom recovery. Has many more options than stock, allowing a full system backup and restore, also known as a nan / nandroid backup, similar to a ghost / image of your system. Can be used and updated through an app called ROM Manager, which is really just an interface / GUI for CWM (among other things).

I only got a sec or I'd answer more ????s.
I use the paid version simply cuz after using the free for so long and it saving me so much time and grief, i felt it only right to buy the full version. Plus the dev (joel) is awesome at direct support. Plus, on full version, you can make multiple backups of an app (for newer versions, etc) .
I would use a diff app for backup texts. Sms backup/restore is good, and free. And that way, you wont have to restore system app and data with Ti (which can cause issues)
Also, I Dont use CWM, I use amonRA, but yes, you will still have it after flashing a new rom, kernel, or theme. It is on a partition that goes untouched across flashes.
Ti, is an excellent tool.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Additionally:
Most custom roms have TB Free, but you will need to restore your Pro key first and reboot, that is if you want to batch restore the rest of your apps and or data etc. Otherwise it's one by one.

That was fast.. and usefull!
Thank you guys, that made it a lot more easy..
How do i clear the dalvik cache?
The CWM is a recovery tool.. So that if something goes wrong in a flash, i can recover by using CWM?
And to do that, i will need to take a Rom Backup, in CMW..
When i press the Backup Rom button i CWM, my phone restarts and boots into CWM interface, and backs up everything.. Where is that file stored, so i can move to my pc, and have the backup an extra place?
About the market problem.. I do almost only have paid apps, so when i login to market with my google account, they automaticly shows up under my bought app's..
Thank you so much for the help so far

You can wipe dalvik cache from a menu within CWM Recovery, or several apps, including TB . TB / Menu / More / .....
Just backup using menu inside CWM Recovery or from within ROM Manager (uses CWM Recovery) before flashing any ROM. So if you don't like the new Rom or have issues, you can boot into recovery and restore.
Most custom ROMs have an advanced power menu allowing you to reboot directly into CWM Recovery, or you can from ROM Manager or from the Bootloader menu.
All CWM Recovery backups are saved to the sdcard / clockworkmod / backup

Titanium backs up your apps and app data and some system data. While recovery backs up/restores your current ROM image, meaning back up will restore everything up to the second you backed up even the way you place your apps

Thank you so much. That was answers to all my questions.. For now
At some later point when i am much more into all this, i am considering making a thread, with info to all the new people in the forum, like me, who don't know what the Dalvik is, and a little about what the kernel is and why it is there.. All the small but usefull stuff, that aren't on the XDA Wiki page about DHD..
A big dictionary
That could be usefull i think..
Thanks a lot for you time
U can also try MyBackup Pro which is an excellent alternative to Titanium.

So... im not a noob but i never tried this before...maybe because i never found this answers...
I really want to root my Play R800i (4.0.2.A.0.42) running 2.3.4
with this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859#
(yeah, just the root permissions, staing in the stock, without unlocking the bl...)
BUT, ive some questions
supposing that i do exatly the same as the tutorial, no errors... will bechance to brick it? (thats the more important one for me...)
will it delet my data and apps?
Can i stil upgrading by SonyEricsson?
yeah, thats it... thanks... and sorry about my english but i think that is understandable...
And another thing, there's any chances to get some problem with the buttons?(the game ones)
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
No there's no chance of bricking or messing up button etc,you can update, all your files will be the same and its pretty simple - you just have to run a script and it does it all for you ; it will close itself as well. NOTE- You can't update if you uninstall some apps I believe ; I've not tried it myself.
Ok thanks, I'll try today

I'm not sure you can backup rom completely without unlocking your bootloader and using clockworkmod recovery, but what i did was backup messages contacts etc with mybackup on the market, and apps+data with titanium then reflashed rom with flashtool erasing everything and running the programs i've mentioned when everything was finished.
so the best thing you can do is backup important things regularly and if your phone ever messes up you can always erase/restore everything
I would like to create my own customized rom for my note 2, with specific setting and apps, or even data, contacts and email...
Is it possible? What kind of apps should I use?

You need to use ubuntu and set up your build environment, are you building it from source? (Aosp?) If yes you need to compile it from source and add the customization you want to the rom. Maybe you could try and edit the apps (like inverted apps) and just add it to the rom. There is no program that can do all of that for you, but there is program that can make you build the rom easier (e.g. the dsixda kitchen and lots more). If you really want to build a rom, i would recommend you to look at the cyanogenmod wiki page and get in a team, building a stable rom does take some time. hope i have helped you

To build roms or kernels, u should really have a good knowledge of:
Python
Linux
Xml
Java
C#
C
And a few other things
But they are not all needed.
You could create a customized rom just using xml, but u wouldn't be able to add many features ect.
The isn't any programmes for creating roms, u need to have a knowledge of how android works, ect, and u need to know how to write code.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Simply say, I just want my email (around 10 gmail accounts) and setting of several apps can remains everytime I perform factory reset.
Maybe I think wrong to do so by customized the rom, and perhaps some other apps can do the same things, other than titanium backup.
Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.
Can't you just root the device and nandroid backup it after you've set all the emails after the initial factory reset. Then you can always put back the backup at any time and you've got a nice clean setup.

for apps and data restore, should I install titanium backup first right after I reset my device??
if so, is it possible to specify several apps to restore automatically?

If you are rooted with Cwm, you could put the apk's u want to keep after a factory reset, and there corresponding data in a Cwm zip, and just flash it after u do a reset, that's the easiest way.

Yes, just back up the app with data in titanium backup, then you can create an update.zip of your backups which you can flash after flashing a rom to restore those apps and their data.

Thanks D3.
is it possible to make specific apps and data (e.g. 10 gmail account, bookmark, line, skype, wechat....something like that) to be restored WITHOUT USING TITANIUM BACKUP? Therefore, mentioned apps and data will automatically restore right after a factory default?
For sure this rom can only be used by myself.
Thanks in advance.
