Let's try to figure out why music lags after a while. - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Sup all! I love my Hero. I use it as my primary music player on the go.
As most of us have encountered though, it happens sometimes that music starts stuttering after half a day of usage. The problem arises when the music stutters for about a tenth of a second on wakeup, and could start stuttering really badly and intermittently while the phone is asleep. It's frustrating when I can't listen to a complete song without interruption!
I figured, if the phone is silky smooth soon after boot, but starts degrading after a while, it's certainly a software bug that's causing the hiccups. Looking at logcat didn't yield much else than AudioFlinger warnings, but after connecting through SSH and looking at top, I noticed the process /system/bin/mediaserver was using up to 17% of the CPU all the time. I killed it, and the music stopped, but then the process restarted, and the music started again, though from the beginning of a different track.
But the music was smooth again, and the CPU usage of /system/bin/mediaserver dropped drastically.
That's all I have so far. Anyone have a clue why mediaserver would start eating CPU cycles like that? Could it be fixed in future custom ROM releases?
I'm hoping for the best.

YES!
This has pretty much been my biggest concern since I got the phone, but haven't looked into it at all.
I am glad someone else brought this up, I'd like to see some discussion on it, and once I get some free time AND get the IM.apk working, I would like to help in figuring this out.
Just briefly I took a look at the Android OS source, and mediaserver doesn't seem to be in there, so I'm going to make a guess and say that mediaserver is an HTC-specific service. (It's 2:30 in the morning here, I really won't have time until at least Sunday to put this theory to the test. )
If it IS HTC-specific, well, there are pros and cons. A pro is that this would mean that simply using a different music app could instantly fix the problem. Cons: The HTC apps are not open source, and we'd probably have to rely on HTC fixing the code, hopefully in the 2.1 update... and, I really like the HTC Music app, so I'd rather not switch to something else if I don't have to.
If it's NOT HTC-specific, then we'll probably have the same problem with every Music app... HOWEVER, this also means that the community has a better chance of fixing it without HTC's help.
One potential solution I've been thinking of is to use Linux's nice function to give mediaserver a higher priority. This means that other processes will run slower when music is playing, but the mediaserver process should constantly get all the CPU cycles it needs. If I'm listening to music on my phone, I'm more than willing to accept a bit of slow-down in everything else.
Sidenote: After disabling compcache and applying this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622666) fix, the issue is much less noticeable, but it's still there. If I were to venture a guess, I would say that disabling compcache is where this improvement came from, since compcache uses some CPU power to compress the memory.

mediaserver is part of the AOSP. It's inside platform/frameworks/base.git, in /media/mediaserver/.
I'll try looking into it but I doubt I'll find anything. =\

In some cases a better SD card helped

ROM based
I seem to recall this being a ROM based issue. I think I had it for a couple of the early versions of Paul's MoDaCo, but in the newer versions it was fixed, and its never been an issue on any of the AOSP 2.1 ROMs i've been running.
I would guess its probably something from the original HTC release that was badly implemented, or un-optimised.
[I think it may have been sorted for MoDaCo when teknologist released his custom kernal?]

I have a Transcend Class 6 8GB, which I think is a well respected card around here. Besides, it doesn't explain why the process starts choking up after a few hours.
By the way, I run on MoDaCo 3.2 beta 5, with the OOM killer tweaked. It's definitely a software bug where the mediaserver gets stuck in a a strange processor-intensive mode.

as for me A-Data micro sdhc turbo class 6 run smooth/faster on music playback/transfer or backup/apply file in recovery.

I have BT audio in the car, what I have found is that when a new track starts the begining seems slower than normal but speeds up, but this doesn't happen when I listen through the phones speaker or headphones? I run on MoDaCo 3.1 and my micro sdhc is a Kingston 4gb.
Could it be it takes a while for the "waves" from the new track to be caught by the stereo, so it takes a while to catch up? (lol!)
Hopefully when andriod 2.1 comes out it will be sorted?

Don't know how it happened, sorry

as i know when u on wifi or BT it will consume more power eat up cpu & phone will surely laggy. if u using normal cable earphone it doesnt consume more power then BT & wifi & dont eat much cpu. BT is eat lot of battery & cpu if im not wrong.

i get this same problem. Its been there since the stock firmware, and is still apparent in MoDaCo 3.1. Even with a class 6 8gb SD card, its still there.
Now Im running a 2.1 variant, its gone, so it would suggest its a rom problem for sure

Anyone having issues with 3.29.651.5

I am running stock 3.29.651.5. Ever since I updated, my battery performance has decreased, my web browser has become very choppy, and overall, the phone just isn't as responsive. The previous build ran beautifully on my Evo. Anyone else having issues?

PEACE,
YES!! It appears that my browser cant even get some pages (or it takes forever to load ---for instance XDA). I use Gtalk (I know most of you consider it BLOATWARE) and i barely can connect or 3G or 4G. My best connection is Wi-Fi which is good--when I'm home...not so good when I'm at work. I've ran the wimax test on my phone through Terminal Emulator and it stated that my wimax keys are still in tact and i have installed the latest radio...*shrugging shoulders*

I am running rooted stock (myn's I believe) with no issues... my other evo is stock 3.29 and had battery issues for the second and third days running but has since smoothed out....
Edit... using Sprint Lovers stock-ish 3.29 from over at ppcg
I have rooted odexed Rom and I can't rip out the Sprint bloatware. It's driving me insane. DC 3.6 can't come fast enough

I'm definitely having issues with gtalk..I can always connect via wifi but for some reason 3g has issues. I can connect with other 3rd party apps though, like beejive and trillian.
I am also having some issues. Used to get around 20hrs or so under moderate use. Now it seems to be more like 12 possibly 16. I get a very weak signal at work and this new update seams to drain much quicker. been thinking about rooting. Have done a lot a reading but not 100% sure how to do it yet.
same problem here. So I read elsewhere to check your Accounts and Sync in the settings. The update reenabled sync for stocks, weather and peep....which once I turned back off, my battery is fantastic!

I can't signin to GTalk since the update. I cleared the data, but that didn't help. What exactly does GTalk do?
Yeah already turned the sync back off. Gonna try rooting with unrevoked. Seems pretty simple to do.
I have had stock everything since I purchased my phone, no rooting or anything and have never had any issues with my phone at all. Since the 3.29 update, I think my phone is actually running better. The screen transitions on all my programs seem smoother, even the 4G load animation is smoother. Battery life is the same as before, crappy but I use my phone ALOT for work. I just don't know if I am just lucky or it is becuase I am using the phone as it was intended from Sprint.

Just a question, not being a smart ass, but what made you join these forums if you haven't done anything to your phone? I'm truly intrigued by the different things I can do, and I like reading about what I can possibly do.
I've been having an issue with audio applications.
If I pause a song or podcast (whether it be in the stock Music application, Google Listen, or Audio Book Player), leave the application for a while, and return there is a very high chance the song or podcast will restart from the beginning. Likewise if I do the same in Pandora the application fill crash on me.
This is mostly annoying because 90% of what I listen to on my phone are podcasts and lectures. Not being able to easily pick up where I left off is irksome.
Has anybody else had this issue?
have you tried pulling out the battery? i had alot of problems with the phone after update and so did my parents. after i pulled battery it starting working alot smoother and battery life has been alot better.

Yes and it is really ticking me off. I started noticing this after the update. I also listen to a lot of podcasts, and am tired of it restarting, it never did this before. Who do we report these bugs too?

Well normally you would report bugs to the app developer, in the case of apps. But in this case I don't know, because I haven't had any of these problems. Haven't done any podcasts but I use Pandora, last.fm, or Slacker radio for about an hour a day. I use it for a half hour on the way to work, pause it since I don't use my phone at work for anything but phone calls, then play from where I paused it 8-10 hours later for the half hour drive home.
I'd try a hard reset. Sometimes updates don't work smoothly. Just look at the Sprint forums shortly after the 2.2 update. Tons of issues that were fixed shortly there after by a hard reset. I haven't noticed any issues, and my battery seems to actually last longer, when the screen is off. I just got 12 hours with several phone calls, wifi, bluetooth, GPS, maps, navigation (for a short time), and the biggest battery drainer: games. Still had 12 percent, and it probably would have lasted at least 4 hours if I just let it sit. I leave all my email push and have facebook sync enabled.
Anyways, from my experience, nothing seems broken, its faster thanks to no fps lock, overall better performance, and the battery lasts longer, though it seems to run down a bit faster when in use compared to before, but it barely loses a charge while sleeping, so standby time makes up for it. (as long as you let it sleep, which in my experience, starting with the G1, is the real secret to best battery life. Let it sleep as long as possible. Constantly messing with it, switching the screen off, only to pick it up five minutes later is horrible for battery life. Use it, let it sleep, pick it up again in an hour. If you can that is...)
Was pretty choppy until I flashed netarchy kernel. But still getting alot of FC on Internet, when I use the back button it FC.
I had issues at first but after time and 2 or 3 reboots, all is smooth.

Phone Coma

I've tried several builds and am quite happy with each (getting better and better as I learn more and more). I've gotten newer and newer kernels and builds and am currently using Thoughlesskyle's not so super froyo and am really liking it.
The one deal-breaker issue that's keeping me from using this phone full time is something I'm calling a phone coma. The phone periodically refuses to wake up from sleep. I may have a flashing notification light that makes it look like the phone is sleeping but I am not receiving emails or phone calls when it's in this state. To wake it up, I have to press the reset button.
I think this may be related to battery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9360324&postcount=7) and I'm going to try to debug this a bit but I was wondering if anyone else is seeing this. I don't think it's specifically related to any one build as I've seen this with DZO and Thoughlesskyle.
Just for completeness, I'm running a Kaiser with a 1 year old 1600mAh battery, a 2.6.25 kernel and, currently, both Sys and Data are on NAND.
Anyone experiencing anything like this?
Sorry, read too quickly your post.
usually is a radio problem that hang the kernel. try with different radio firmware.
I seem to get one of those about 1 or 2 hours after every kernel flash (that may just be a cooincidence though), and maybe once or twice a week as well.
I haven't been able to identify any app or other thing that might have caused it, as they usually happen when I haven't been using the phone for a while.
Info:
Kaiser 130, 23-11-10 l1q1d kernel, Fat Free Froyo RLS5
I thought it might be something to do with the screen turning on (ie wrong panel type), as when it "freezes", the keyboard lights still go on and off when you open the keyboard. I've never been sure if my Kaiser is panel 2 or 3, but it's happened to me on both panel 2 and panel 3 nbhs, so maybe it's unrelated.
That is a known issue with the .25 kernel did it give you backwards text too? What's weird is its only froyo that has that issue these freezes are also why dzo started porting the new one
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I've never seen the backward text. I'll look at rebuilding with the .32 kernel. Interestingly, it doesn't seem to happen when plugged in (so far). It's only happened once today so I may let it roll for a few days and see what it's like.
I observed it too

I have an almost identical setup: a HTC Kaiser with kernel 2.6.25 & thoughtlesskyle's fat free build RLS5, and I observed similar random freezes and reboots. Last night the phone was in standby mode before I went to bed, and in the morning I saw the boot splash screen. It missed the wake-up alarm! The battery was at about 50% level and the phone was not being charged overnight, if it matters. But I did experience random lock-up in the midst of dialing or playing a game when the battery was well-charged.
As much as I like the responsiveness of Android and rich apps, if the device/software is not stable, I may have no choice but go back to WM.

have some patience guys, kernel .25 has this issues, and devs are working hard on kernel .32 to solve this problems, this is a linux kernel and has to mount the file system to read it and then unmount it on shutdown, but recently there have been some issues with the unmounting part on the shutdown (like when u just unplug the power cord on a PC and windows restart with the "blue screen") until devs find a solution, its wise to always keep on hand a recent /data backup. Another word of advice: read! i dont want to sound rude, but all this is commented extensively over the forum.... like l1qu1d would wisely suggest: use the search tool!

the old kernel only does this with froyo if you still want to use android use n eclair build or donut its not the latest and greatest but they are very stable though
Thanks, I may give it a shot (or I may just buy a samsung captivate ). Your build is very good. Doesn't seem to be as quick as some of the others I've tried but yours has been really stable. I've been running it for about a week. The others
This problem doesn't seem to happen when plugged in - it's only when on battery. I've had some app freeze-ups but, in general, the phone has been really nice.

lag on motorola defy!

my defy is just 2 weeks old and i have started experiencing trememdous lags....
its 2.2.2 running , kernel is 2.6.32.9-g0671d13 , just in case it could help in finding a solution...
1. the screen goes off on its own half of the time (even though the time out is of 1 minute) and even when i unlock it , it again goes off.. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING
2. i have just 1 game installed, but even then the phone lags a lot, the game lags and so does the entire phone..!
3. the internet isnt getting activated (i guess thats a network problem though), anyone with a similar problem!?
please post replies as soon as possible..
well i too experience the same, mine is 30 days old...
I have disabled gps/data/wifi/auto brightness to get max battery yet it fails to go beyond 1 day even if i use max an hour of wifi.
screen going blank on it own is frustrating
moto widget for time and date does not keep current time
lag in touch even after running ATK on auto aggressive mode
defy is running indian 2.2.2
p.s. any idea if i can get data on first date of use for battery? I somehow feel a new one should give more standby life.
my phone does last around 1 1/2 days with an hours gaming....and it does keep the current date and time (as of now)...
mine too lags inspite of the ATK being on autokill.... even the homescreen takes time to load after pressing the home button ...
Might want to try getting rid of ATK.
Tasks/services run for a reason on android. When something kills them, they'll start back up, causing more cpu and memory usage than if you'd just leave the service running.
Run for a reason, but not necessarily a good one. Stock motorola/vodafone firmware that I had on my defy would run many completely irrelevant processes - VF360, newsandweather, amazon mp3, etc. Task killing isn't the solution because they just start up again.
The best way to get best performance from the phone is to install CM7.
You could try to wipe in stock recovery. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982, point witch says Froyo laggy. You will lose all data.
If you find it laggy afterwards, you will never be happy with the preferments on stock froyo. Then try CM7. You will be able to downgrade to send it to warranty as I also did this. It is quite a difference.

Is it going off while you are holding it by the top, with a finger on the left of the speaker hole?
If it is the case, it is because you are masking the proximity sensor. And if you have the "Pocket detection" feature activated, it will cause this annoying stuff...
Well not to worry even mine was laggy before, i had just installed 2-3 apps. I had to restart my phone at least once then i installed cm7 rc1.5 Now its very fast and i dont remember the last time when my phone was lagging and freezing.
I guess it has something to do with the froyo and motoblur on defy that makes it laggy.
You have to have get rid of stock froyo after owning a defy.. thats the truth..
I did a readup on the ATK stuff and the excerpt from the and dev documents... well since the read i have uninstalled all task killers... (kept one just in case with all auto actions disabled)
I do hope the lag issue is resolved after moving to CM7/Jboogie3 etc
however the battery issue is a major hurdle for now as one day is too less, i probably have to take it to the service center for a checkup and/or claim warranty on battery. till them no flashing for me...
att: patriiice - even when the proximity sensor is not covered, i do experience screen blanks, almost immediately asa the power button is pressed to wake the device.
The lag presented on the Defys running Froyo is a "super nice feature" by Motorola it has an easy fix tho.
Its caused by the VM consuming all memory, all its needed is adjusting the amount of MB the VM should leave free.
There are a few ways to it:
1) Run a terminal emulator, or use GScript Lite to run this:
su
vm.min_free_kbytes=8192
(Not permanent, need to be ran every time you reboot)
2) Get Sysctl from market and do it from there.
3) Get SetVSel and do it from there.
Lag
I have that problem to. The bad thing is that i can`t answer call during the lag, it says i have my phone is closed or i don`t have signal. I`ve installed Temp+CPU and during lag it shows that the proc is running at 100%. Memory has all the time, around 130 min and 230 max. Closed all programs one by one, no change. I restart the phone and everything is running smooth and it lasts max 1 day. i have stock rom 2.2.2. (please excuse my spelling)

I also use 2.2.2 stock and my defy runs without lag... you should consider to root the phone and freeze some unnecessary stock-preinstalled apps like Kindle, Voice command, etc... the ones you will never use. I freezed about 20 apps and there is no lag at all. (I even froze Maps, Streets, SIM toolkit, and some others)

stock froyo is not good but it shouldn't be that bad. there were some faulty battery issue that i have heard of before too. but in your case your defy might even be faulty. so i would suggest you get it replaced or fixed under warranty first before flashing any custom rom.

Nope. I was wrong after 3 days of normal proc usage it started again. I`ve installed OS Monitor (free on market) and there was a process the ate all my resources: "DRM Protected Content Storage". Selected watch log and there was something like "enter, delete update, uri: content://media/external/audio/media/1 ../44.... /254..."
This process is searching ur phone for media, video audio and looked like it was stucked at this folder. I`ve searched the phone for that folder but couldn't find it so i just killed the app in OS Monitor. After the process restarted at log was showing "media search finished:182 audio files found and 1 video found". Looks like that's my problem and maybe yours to. Cheers mates
so I might visit the service center this weekend to have my battery life checked.. one day life with all wifi/data/gps disabled and below average voice calls is not acceptable at all.
what is stock recovery?? and will it void my warranty???

[Q] Galaxy Nexus extremely laggy after loading music into storage

Hello all,
I have a question about an issue that has been plaguing my phone for about the last month. I have tried numerous ROMs, kernels and basebands (which shouldn't make a difference but it's worth a try). Basically what is happening is when I have a clean install of a ROM with nothing loaded into storage, my phone is snappy and works perfectly, like butter, no matter the ROM or kernel. As soon as I load music on to my phone, the phone slows down dramatically. I start having "xxx is not responding" messages from every app I load up and the phone slows down to a crawl. I have tried many ROMs and kernels. If I install a new ROM without wiping my internal storage, the phone boots up with the newly loaded ROM slowly and can barely make it through the Android setup without crashing. If I wipe the internal storage and load a new ROM it works perfectly and snappy.
Does anyone know of a reason why this would happen? I am surprised that some music files could slow down the phone so much. Any thoughts are appreciated. I haven't tried going back to stock, but that is my next step. Somehow I think it would still slow down. I got the phone with ICS on it and immediately rooted and loaded JB ROMs on it. It didn't really start at first until I loaded my 10GB music collection on there. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Media storage scans new media and logs it into the appropriate apps.
Even with what I drop on (~4 gigs of music) it can lag for a few hours even.
Without you doing further testing and diagnosis I would guess that is your problem.
Settings>Battery should show media scanner high on the list.
Have you tried to let it settle (build up caches and read the files) for a day?
Yes, I was on a trip last week and let it sit for three days. I figured as much for the media scans, so I let it sit for a day. I don't see media scanner anywhere on my battery list. Just mediaserver, as I try to listen to the music that is on the phone as much as I can without locking anything up. I have:
Screen
Phone Idle
Mediaserver
Cell standby
Winamp
FBTouch
Android OS
Chrome
Android System
Voice Calls

Sometimes I wish I could.
Figured it out. I re encoded my music to VBR and copied it to my phone and all is well!

Hi, sorry for my eng., I have the same problem as you. But I think it's not only music. Tested read\write speed on clean stock, it's awesome. Then filled storage with music (6 gigs) and movies (6 gigs) - write speed decreased from 12 MB\s to 0,7 MB/s!!! WTF?! Then I deleted all music and movies (+12 Gb free) and ran tests again - read\write speed still low! Forever Gone (Nexus 7 memory lag's solution) doesn't helped.
Any ideas?
Well, reported to google about this problem. Others should look for an Issue 39154 on google code threads and join discussion

Phone freezing twice or thrice a day ! Tried all reset options !

Hi All,
Anybody here with the same issue ?
Looks like a software issue/touch unresponsive issue because usually I find it coming back to normal once I press power button and unlock it again.
Sounds like RAM allocation issue, isn't ?
Thinking to sell it. Please suggest if you guys know a better way to deal with it !
Even if I go to SC, I cannot reproduce the issue at that particular time. They will just reset it and give me back, and that where I don't want to waste my time.
Does this looks fruitful to flash stock firmware again by the unbrick way ? I feel like that will be me last try.
You seem new here, so welcome on xda
One thing you should keep in mind is to be as precise as possible when presenting an issue, your description right now is not very clear, by the title it sounded like your phone actually froze, which could have been a ram or even a power management issue, but after reading your post it seems more likely that your display was wet, or that you were charging your phone, capacitive touchscreens are sensible to that.
Usually a frozen phone does not respond to the power button like yours did, and a ram issue seems very unlikely tbh

My style of using I believe is the same and I had no such issues in my Cool 1 ever in an year. Was a lot better in every way. Picked it up because I loved the looks, but have lost my trust on Huawei. They really need a lot of improvement.
i am having the same issues as the OP (Although i don't know what he means by "going to the SC")
the phone just goes through moments of extreme lag for about 10-30 seconds, sometimes longer, and it makes the phone COMPLETELY unusable during those times. it happens at least once every other day or so, sometimes several times a day, and sometimes it only lasts about 10 seconds, although on a few occasions, it has lasted several minutes, the phone will "attempt" to respond to inputs, but it gets nowhere quick, opening apps i did not click on, closing apps that weren't open, black-screening, half-screening (app on half the screen), etc.. sometimes i have to just power cycle..
i have the exact same feeling as the OP in that i want to sell the phone. (although i type much better, i'll assume english is a second language for him/her)
i like EMUI a lot.. although i think i want a galaxy s8/s9 now.

Since yours is the us variant, I'm assuming you've got 3 gb of ram instead of 4 gb, in which case a ram issue seems much more likely.
Not much of an issue actually, just that you probably had lots of apps open at the same time, leading to almost full ram (so the system starts closing background and even foreground apps if needed, leading to the strange behaviour you noticed).
Just remember to close apps you don't use and you'll be fine

It's 2018 and I think the OP and I know how smartphones work. I am coming from a phone with 2GB RAM and it has no such issues, no matter how many apps and/or games are open. Google explicitly states that closing background apps is unnecessary, and I should think EMUI offers an improvement over stock Android, not a detrimental experience. However, if you are correct and it is the RAM, it is not acceptable and needs to be fixed or I'm buying a new phone from a different company. In today's world, phones will open links to Chrome and from Chrome open reddit, xda app, pinterest, link to Facebook, share to Twitter, etc etc.. every time I click on a button I should not be having to back track to make sure I only have a certain amount of apps open. Nougat limits max open apps to 20 BTW, marshmallow it was 30.. But RAM management CPU management should be better. If it's of any interest, my reported "free" ram always stays at or above 1-1.5GB so I don't think its ram.. CPU or software problem, possibly.. But my Temps are good as well. Yes it's the 3GB version
Just a quick thought of something you could check (I also have the US 3GB version and was experiencing the same issue). Open up Settings > Battery, and other the "Other" section click "Consumption". See if there's any apps there that are keeping the phone awake and preventing it from sleeping. I would get constant lag after only a few hours of use, and it was intermittent just like you're experiencing. I was about to send the phone back, but checked this setting first. Turns out, the CNN app was running the CPU at nearly 100% for hours on end and preventing the phone from deep sleeping. Once I uninstalled that app, I haven't had issues since then. Could be something similar, just a thought. YMMV.
And by the way, it's NOT the ram. 3GB is plenty. You can see how much is being used on the app select screen, and I've never used more than 1.5 with a ton of apps in the background.
Let me help you there guys....i got the US variant too and has these freezing and lags all over the place, what i discover and did was:
1- Not all the apps works well with the phone hardware(they told me that somewhere) so try to test the apps you put on the phone.
2-Delete all the unnecessary apps from emui, that will give you less lag.
3-Check the battery consuming apps like the guy said and if you want turn on the close apps on screen lock.
Now after all of these my phone have been moving better but the problem isnt the ram, is the software so wait a little more so they can fix this cause is really a good value phone
It has to be the RAM management. Huawei must have optimized the software for 4GB, and then released a US 3GB version without changing anything, so it's screwed up even though phone is showing lots of free RAM.
Wao man thats the best explanation for this problem thanks man
It isn't and never was a RAM thing. Android's memory management essentially force closes apps (but shows them in recents) if it needs more memory. Note there is no work involved in that and you'd never know it until you switch apps and it has to reload, shows logo, etc. Amazing how non-solutions we're brought up multiple times and even thanked. Insert that's-not-how-any-of-this-works meme.

Well, yeah, ram issues nowadays should not be present, but I do speak on a basis, I have experienced bad performance and foreground apps getting killed on a nexus 5, which has 2 gb of ram and stock android. I have no idea what's emui's ram management policy, but on a scale, this would be the least likely cause for sure
