I'm trying some of the 2.1 ROM's on my Hero, but most of them don't seem to have working predictive text working? How can I install/enable it? In the settings it's all on, but when I type it only ever predicts contact names!
Try better keyboard that's how i got round the problem, its nicer than the stock Android keyboard anyway.
Yeah, I could do that (in fact I did, for a few hours, then got a refund) I was hoping there was a way just to fix the problem.
I am a little bit effraid to use third party keyboard.
It's so easy to send what you type on a server...( password/login)
You just have to install the latinime.apk
Mine did exactly the same initially.
Okay, cool. Thanks.
Okay, that didn't work for me I'm just going to buy Better Keyboard I think...
Try the new new Eclair AOSP (released yesterday, it's 2.0 not 2.01)
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/300028/aosp-eclair-2-0-r4-for-gsm-hero/
That's meant to have full dictionaries on the stock keyboard. I'm just flashing it now.

any way to get spell check to work with the h/w keyboard?
I would like to know this as well

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but maybe it will work in substitute?
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/3784-you-want-predictive-text-wth-physical-keyboard-here-how-you-do-you-welcome.html
It adds predictive text to the physical keyboard. Not quite spell check, but could be used as a substitute.
Edit: Hmm, just realized this might not work super great since it was intended to install on the droid... Some of the market keyboard applications have settings for predictive text using the hardware keyboard. If you google around for it, you can find them.

Thanks for reminding me of this.
I haven't used this solution in a while, as I didn't need it on my Nexus one.
But I did use it on my G1. It's a decent on screen keyboard too, but the hardware keyboard protection makes it killer. Lots of skins available too.

Wanted to bump this back to the top.
Is there a way to turn on spell check with the physical keyboard? Settings > locale & text seems to have no effect on the physical keyboard settings.
Just download smart keyboard pro. Great keyboard and has exactly what you are looking for with hardware suggestions. Highly recommend

Tried this -- it only works if you tap the text area once after the keyboard is out. Unless there's some setting I'm missing, I can't get it to work right away. It's super annoying and has been uninstalled. =(
Don't know if anyone mentioned before, least haven't seen one. A new Beta for Swype is out. Found it while reading in GSMArena blog. Using it. Not bad. Swype lovers should try it.

Swyping from my i9100 via Tt
Fairly early days in terms of my usage of it, but definite signs of improvement on what was already an indispensable tool. Seems quicker and slicker somehow. Haven't really been able to test out the word prediction facility yet.
They say it has a fresh new look, but it looks the same to me.

Perhaps true in the sense that it is still a keyboard but the size, colour and styling are both different - not radically, but somewhat.
As a matter of interest, you did enable Swype Beta, didn't you? For whatever reason the beta and the original both show as installed. You won't see the new look unless you enable the beta.
Can someone report the actual version number of this please, as I'm not sure if this is the version I already have installed
I have: 3.26.92.38965.38973.10637.I9100
Just installed it, it feels... bigger, the new Swype. I'd rather it be slightly smaller.
Also I noticed some new effects when you let go (it like shrinks and fades out) after swyping and it also seems to run a bit faster.
My version is 1.0.3.5809
Interestingly though the package name is nuance and not swype.
From the manifest.xml:
HTML:
<manifest android:versionCode="5809" android:versionName="1.0.3.5809" package="com.nuance.swype.input"
This must be their first release since acquiring swype.

Word removing is changed and I don't like it.
On non beta, if you hold the backspace button then word by word would get deleted, but now it's letter by letter. Damn!

AGREED! This is my only complaint thus far. Why did they mess with it, or at least not make it an option???

Is it possible to change the Swype's interface?
In the German version they attached üßöä on the right side of the keyboard... that is annoying! Is there any way to change it?
The Rest is nice...

Another bug. Just click on the address bar of a website and see how long it takes to pop up the Swype. I was on Stock browser.

How can you enable handwriting? I choose it from options but I couldn't find to run it.
All in all this is an awful release in my opinion.
Ability to delete words in the original dictionary is a HUGE improvement, and I also love the option to have popups.
But then I noticed that words you just typed get erased immediately if you press backspace, but I just though well, I guess I can get used to that even though it's kind of a stupid change to make.
Then I noticed that backspace now erased letter by letter instead of words by word.
THEN I noticed that words get auto-added, meaning that every time you type out a captcha or feel like randomly saying something like "wazzaaaaaaa" to a friend, you'll involuntarily be getting those words added to your dictionary!
AND THEN I noticed that you can't add the "" and the "" smileys to your dictionary. A feature which I usually use at least once per sms!
I don't see why they feel like they have to decide for us whether we want to erase word by word or letter by letter, or whether we want words to auto-add or not!?
Also, I've been swyping this entire post, and making a capital i is near impossible, and a capital A IS impossible. Also the marker seems to have a life of it's own most of the time. Horrible release.
Back to the last Swype beta for me, good that I had a backup...
I just hope they bring a new beta with the old features soon before this one expires.
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9100 mit Tapatalk 2
Wish I had a backup. It's more accurate by far but messaging is annoying, the letter marker seems to jump and it creates duplicate when everything a new line on everything. Also, i hate the send key being replaced by smilies.
Swype Full
Hi all,
I recently moved from Stock-rom (in which I had a full version of swype - 3.26 I think). Is there a way that I can extract my Swype from the Stock-rom and move it to the custom rom? (I have Nandroid for the stock).
I've tried to backup with TB in the stock, and restore in the custom but it didn't work. I also tried to copy the data\app files & data\dalvik-cache & data\data\com.android.swype.inputmethod & of course - the apk.
It all didn't work.
Any advices?
Thanks.

You have to copy the lib file as well as the app from the /system/app and system/lib to the respective folders I think
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Thanks.
I've tried to do that.
At system\lib, originally, I had nothing that relates to Skype.
However, at Data\Data\com.swype.android.inputmethod\, I had several folders. One of them was ..\Lib, and the lib file was there.
No other place it was originally placed.
Any advices?
and another question, if I may...
where are the language packs files stored?
I love the new app but DAMN ITS A MEMORY HOG!
Old Swype on my device used 12.24MB
New Swype plus mandatory SwypeConnect app uses 38.2MB :silly:
I use thumb; I like it but it is lagging a bit more than usual or maybe it always did. Like the split keyboard option. But like i said it is lagging and the predictions aren't as I remember them.
What is everyone else using? if possible provide an apk if its not a very common one.
Well, this is misleading, as you actually refer to keyboards. Though i use stock 4.2 or thumb keyboard.

OP, Might wanna retitle this to Keyboards vice SMS apps.. Most are thinking your refering to GO SMS or HANDCENT possibly.. Not keyboards such as Swiftkey and Swype.
So I'm not sure how to go about describing this issue, so I'll just take a stab at it by saying that the android keyboard will not ever autocorrect "youre" to "you're". Instead it would rather correct it to "your". Yes this bothers me a lot because now I have to manually spell out that word whenever I use it. Is there some setting in the android keyboard that I'm missing that makes it understand the difference between your and you're? Some default setting perhaps? I've already cleared out my personal dictionaries for this as well as attempted to add "youre" manually to the personal dictionaries but go figure, the phone won't let that happen. The other reason I'm using the android keyboard is because ever since jellybean came out, the default lg keyboard in the phone seems to have become very slow. And by that I mean I can type faster than the key pop ups have time to pop up. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Since you've done the only things I could think about, I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. My only recommendation would be trying a different keyboard, I've used Swiftkey for years and really enjoy it! You can try a free trial (1month). Otherwise just try some other free ones?
Ever since the update to One UI 2.1 where I think the Samsung Keyboard got updated, I've been having horrible typing experience. The word prediction and auto-correct are broken. Example, I am trying to type "Pork" and it auto-corrects to "Prom"
Yes!... For some reason I keep getting "ication" just added at total random. I've even cleared the keyboard and reset it. Not sure why

Can't stand the Samsung keyboard.. have trouble with it in two languages.. on Gboard, and all is well .
Same here. I switched to the Google Keyboard because I could not take it anymore.

They updated it to be able to write in multiple language without having to switch.
But i agree, i got some issue like suggesting a single word with the same but with a second word "br" after, which is none of any kind.
After some "practice" though, I got less strange things.
Mine was completely unusable and had to go to Gboard for now.

How is it better on Gboard? It states on Google playstore: "Multilingual typing – No more switching between languages manually. Gboard will auto-correct and suggest from any of your enabled languages."
I hate having suggestions from both languages at the same time, even though I switch between them. I wish there was a fix for it.

Well, it takes one click on the 'globe' to switch between languages, suggestions come for the current language only, and while not perfect, Google offers a far better and closer suggestions to what I try to type than Sammi keyboard does. I do admit I haven't got Sammi a chance to improve, I type tons in my phone and can't be a their tester, not when I pay $1,000 on a phone..
Yes, I have troubles too either with French or English. I came back to my old "Swype+Dragon" keyboard - unfortunatly no longer available for new users.
