lost need directions..... own 2 HTC phones - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Got two Eris phones about three weeks ago.
I love it, but am getting borred with it.
I can swap the phone in for a different one up until Jan./15'th. It doesn'tlook like the Eris is going to get rooted, so I was wondering if I should switch to the Moto Droid since it can be rooted? Any one switched from the Eris, and if so, Is there anything that you miss about it?
Also, I still have my last phone, which is an Alltel HTC Touch. The original version of the first Touch, Not the Touch Pro. Can this phone be Rooted/Hacked or modified?
Sorry if these questions have already been asked, but I didn't have much luck with the search function. Thanx in advance for helping a noob.

Can the HTC Touch not be rooted/hacked?

Is this not the proper section to ask this in, or does no one else know the answer to this. Either???????

Universal androot

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this? This app was highlighted in gizmodo, on weeks best apps. They said it was in the android market, but when I went to check it out it wasn't found. Any word on this app? Thanks in advance.

It's not the longest article...wondering how you missed the important part as an evo owner.
The bad news is that there are still some devices such as the HTC EVO 4G running the FRG22D firmware that are left out of the party.

Wow, I didn't catch that. I just saw that some phones might not work. Thanks for the heads up.

universal androot for x10i with 2.1
i would like to know something before i start using universal androot to root my phone, i live in SA and have 2.1, vodacom network, on my phone would like to know if androot will work on present version. if not, what else can i use to root my phone. are there any fixes if phone not working after rooting...
please guys, im needing to know so that i can root my phone...
Not to be an ass, but on researching how to root you could only find a four month old thread?
Google unrevoked. Works like a charm. Used it to root a guys phone yesterday.
^^He got to you before i did....and believe me he was nice about it. Unrevoked is just about fool proof. If i can read and figure it out, so can you!!!!
the poor guy he is trying to root an X10i as well. you may want to head over to that forum and check if there is an unrevoked for x10i or some other thread in the development section

Replacement EVO- how to bring root to new evo?

I agree...
And to the Original Poster.... here are some tips....
1. Use the search function...there are many forums that help with this, and may already have the info you need.
2. Read the FAQ's, as this is one of the most FAQ...
3. When posting a question, try to include more details...In this case, you will need to know what version of HBOOT you have. If you have one older than 2.02 (meaning it is NOT 2.02), then you can easily use www.unrevoked.com.
So, if you look at the forum topics you will see topics like HOW TO ROOT - , followed by numbers like 2.02, or 2.10...and sometimes a catchy phrase like "How to Root: FLY LIKE A KITE EDITION"
There is also one called UNIVERSAL AUTO ROOT..... try one of these topics that meet you HBOOT needs.
To check you HBOOT version, turn off you phone. (let go of all buttons), then press the VOLUME DOWN button and hold it, while you press POWER ON...
on the white screen you will see the HBOOT version number...this should give you a shove in the right direction.
Sorry about being impatient... Broke my phone at work. After work I'm heading to best buy to get my phone replaced because I'm typing on spiderweb broken screen right now!
Once I get new phone, wasnt sure if it would be easy to root because my old phone was nan unlocked and rooted. I was hoping I could put my sd card from old phone and be closer to being rooted again instead of starting from, scratch.

[Q] EVO common probs and whatnot?

Whats going on dudes i been in the heroc forum since launch and finally decided to let her go. I know im a tad bit late but I got my evo over xmas and just had some questions that I thought id ask before I even attempt to root; i have 30 days to return it. I done some searching and came across a few threads of common probs so im gaining some knowledge. What does this so called "light leakage" look like and what should I look for. I also saw something about some peoples phones not holding 4g; how long should It hold 4g before it drops? I did see some users mention hardware version; mine says 0004. Sorry if im asking to much i just dont want to get really settled in and start noticing problems and i have to take it back. So what should i really be looking for to make the call to take this sucker back before 30 days is up. Thanks in advance

I cannot answer any of your 4g questions because I do not have our where I live.
Light leakage issue is because the screen can separate from the body of the phone. Hard to explain what it looks like. Mine had it slightly but does not bother me.
Fyi...if you flash a aosp rom your camera will most likely not work. 4g and hdmi will not work either until cyanogen and teamdouche get it working. Should not be too long at all for 4g on cyanogenmod. A couple weeks or so I would GUESS.
Don't take your evo back. If you have anything else you have a question about feel free to pm me

Well I'm in love with the device already I think I somewhat understand light leakage as my hero might have suffered from this(if its the same thing). I live in Houston tx the 4g seems ok but mine dropped 1 or 2 times but that should be no biggie. Lastly, thanks for the warm welcome and help man.

Hey there and welcome. Definitely stay with the evo. It's off the chain. Make sure you find the proper way to root your hardware version. I've heard it can be a little tricky. After you root I suggest using Myn's Warm Rom. It's based off stock but has several goodies. Sprint hotspot is unlocked, it's fast and snappy. I use Myn with Calkulins new kernel. It gives you awesome battery life. If you need some assistance with anything don't hesitate to PM me. I'm more than willing to help. Hope you stay and enjoy the ride.

That's sounds awesome and exactly what I want to do. My main goal is just to get root access and keep rockin sense; I just want to be able to remove the bloatware really i.e sprint nascar, football etc and unlocking WiFi tether. Unfortunately my phone came with 2.2(651.1) so I can't root just yet I don't think but day #3 with my evo is freaking sweet.
Sent from my new EVO via Tapatalk app.
Mine came with 2.2 as well.that doesn't mean you can't root it.you can root all evo's. Like I said before it's going to matter what hardware you have. It really depends on your hboot version. Power off the phone then while holding down the volume button press and hold the power button till the screen comes on completely. Now at the top you can see your hboot version.search the forum on how to root your version. If you have trouble finding the correct way pm me with your hboot version as well a your hardware version. You can find that in settings under about phone.look for hardware info.then it will be a 4 digit# such as 0003.

I have the 2.10 hboot but I was waiting to root because I heard unrevoked might release a beta for my version 0004 with my hboot. Reason I haven't rooted yet is because I read its a pain in the butt to root with my hboot at the moment since I have the latest update as well.

If you want to root now here is the thread to root your hboot- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
It's up to you if you want to go ahead and do it. No one knows how long it will be till unrevoked is working. Which ever way you decide to go with you're going to be very happy with the evo.
Hi Dirky-
I am also moving from Hero to EVO, should have the EVO on Friday.
Please keep posting as you find out any info!
I'm excited to get it!!!!

don't root! giving yourself the opportunity to flash custom roms and install tweaks will have you constantly checking and scouring xda for more info and new roms,
can tell yourself you won't go to far but you will, prepare for constant playing with and updating/tweaking your Evo

Yeah I couldn't use auto root had to do it long way bummer huh. Azrael is still sense Rom and it comes with goodies and WiFi tether. I also just read that cyanogen got the camera working on hardware 0004 which is what my phone is and maybe yours. That means we can use cm6 or 7 and rock a vanilla rom.

Well it was sent directly from Sprint and got it yesterday, so you would think I would get the latest version, but mine is 003.

[Q] I hope I am able to get a answer to this....

I hope I am able to get a answer to this. I have glanced over the past threads before I posted but did not find my answer. If I missed it, I am sorry, I have ADD.
One of my co workers liked my theme so much that he decided to root his Incredible 2 but he was so excited to have my theme/rom, he forgot to backup his stock verizon rom. Now he needs to take his phone back for repair for other reasons. My question is, Can I install MY verizon rom backup on his phone?
If so, how do I do it and can you please tell me in simple step by step in english or if not, what should he do?
Thank you very much everyone that reads and helps me on this matter
If this matters, the stock rom was Gingerbread (OTA).

I am assuming you have an Incredible 2 also? If so it might help to post in that forum as this is the forum for the Droid Incredible. If you do in fact have the original Incredible and he has the Incredible 2 then there is no way he can use your backup, the phones use different kernels. Best bet to get your friends phone back to stock would be to go to the Incredible 2 forums and see if they have a thread for restoring the phone back to stock.

Restore from another device backup fails. Each device has a unique and distinct id number associated with it, and it is in every backup.

rooting diff between gs2 and epic 4g touch

ok so when i first got my spring galaxy s2 (epic 4g touch) i rooted it but i think i used the method for the galaxy s2 and not the method for Epic 4g touch. After i did that the phone didnt have any service. long story short i couldnt fix it so i got another phone (epic 4g touch) and i would like to root it but scared it might happen again. Did that problem happen cause i used the wrong method? Is there a diff when it comes to rooting a galaxy s2 and sprints version called epic 4g touch? Thanks
This is the right section! You need to slow down and do some research for a couple / few days... Go through the development section and read through the different posts. You'll get it. No one is going to hold your hand through the process.... The info is here for your taking. Welcome to our forums
Got boost?
What good are Q&A sections if when you ask a question someone ALWAYS replies with (use the search button, or do research), .....Trust me after what happened i did do a couple/ few days of reasearch and i wasnt asking for anyone to hold my hand OR how to do it. Read the post again and thanks for the welcome. cheers
Well the rooting method is the same...except you need to use files designed for the Epic Touch. Since both phones are so similar, and really only differ in the radio, that's why you didn't get any service, because you used the GSM Galaxy S2 files. Only flash what's in the developer forum for this specific phone and you're good to go.

He's just trying to help you out. Maybe you should understand that. Anyone that flashes something that goes to another phone doesn't need to be flashing anything for a while till they research and read. Yes the original gs2 is GSM that'd probably why u lost signal. U need to only flash things in this development forum. I would flash the stock pulled kernel with cwm by chris41g and then flash su in cwm for root and add busybox. That's your best bet. Good luck.

Thanks guys for the real help I do appreciate it.
I found a conventional root. Google "doomlord root" or http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...-anything-try-doomlords-easy-rooting-toolkit/
It works perfectly for the epic touch. No flashing required. I used it because i wanted full control but loved stock.

A new automated root method was just posted today for our phones specifically and I can confirm it works flawlessly, just did it on mine 30 minutes ago. It roots your current ROM and doesn't flash anything at all so if you had no problems with your phone before root, you won't have any after. DO IT.
