I agree...
And to the Original Poster.... here are some tips....
1. Use the search function...there are many forums that help with this, and may already have the info you need.
2. Read the FAQ's, as this is one of the most FAQ...
3. When posting a question, try to include more details...In this case, you will need to know what version of HBOOT you have. If you have one older than 2.02 (meaning it is NOT 2.02), then you can easily use www.unrevoked.com.
So, if you look at the forum topics you will see topics like HOW TO ROOT - , followed by numbers like 2.02, or 2.10...and sometimes a catchy phrase like "How to Root: FLY LIKE A KITE EDITION"
There is also one called UNIVERSAL AUTO ROOT..... try one of these topics that meet you HBOOT needs.
To check you HBOOT version, turn off you phone. (let go of all buttons), then press the VOLUME DOWN button and hold it, while you press POWER ON...
on the white screen you will see the HBOOT version number...this should give you a shove in the right direction.

Sorry about being impatient... Broke my phone at work. After work I'm heading to best buy to get my phone replaced because I'm typing on spiderweb broken screen right now!
Once I get new phone, wasnt sure if it would be easy to root because my old phone was nan unlocked and rooted. I was hoping I could put my sd card from old phone and be closer to being rooted again instead of starting from, scratch.

[Q] Issues with restoring Mytouch Slide with stock rom..unrooted..

Hey all - searched for any help/threads for help on this - I've seen help on this issue with rooted phones (having to unroot, etc.) but not much on unrooted phones.
The mytouch slide that I got is stuck at the splash screen - I can use the bootloader (have tried 2 different esprimg.zip files and both say the main version is older - update fail) - Other than trying to install those files from the bootloader - I don't really know what the next step to take is - there aren't much options in the bootloader to mess around with - I don't need to end up with a rooted phone, just prefer going back to the original rom just because it isn't my phone...tis my girlfriends.
Any help will be greatly appreciated - and if this is just some stupid post by a new lurker looking for help that has been answered a million times and is on the top page, I do truly apologize - I've tried what I see in my head as all the options I have - is there any way to root this phone still without having access to like usb debug mode and such? Is that the route I may have to take?
Will Tmobile help with getting me a restore or something that would be the easiest route? I guess I'm relatively unfamiliar with having to take a phone in to get serviced...
Thanks for your help,
Adam.
What did you do prior to it getting stuck at the splash screen? Other method would be to see if you can root it and flash a custom rom, then try going back to stock if you do not want to stay rooted... If you're in hboot, you may be able to get to recovery to perform root.

Knew I'd probably screw something up (even with the years of experience in forums...ugh...)
I'd have to ask her - it happened last night - she had been mentioning that it had been getting stuck there recently and that just taking the battery out and turning it back on once or twice fixed that issue. Looks like it finally caught up with her.
When I do try recovery - it just hangs at the splash screen as well. What are some methods of rooting (or restoring) with just having access to hboot? Not being able to enable things like usb debug may poise an issue?
At this point, I'm open to any ideas. If anything, while at work today, tomorrow I may just call Tmobile and see what they would recommend. Besides buying a new, unsubsidized phone of course...
Thanks for the response,
Adam.
Well, if it is still under warranty, they will simply ship you out another. If you cannot even get into recovery, I am at a loss, so hopefully someone else chimes in.
That sounds odd. I got the same thing when i unrooted, "older version". But never got stuck. Cant remember what i did though to make that message go again. All i can say is keep searching and get creative. At this point trying anything is better than giving up.

What he said if the phones within a year of when u bout it whether you have the damage plan or not call say one day I turned it on and it won't go on just stays at mytouch screen. Act dumb and let them walk u thru some bull**** tests they do then they'll simply say it needs to be replaced then u pay $10-12 for shipping and they send u a new phone and a box to ship ur broken one back. I did this with my g1 a couple of times they can't tell or won't make a big deal to find out if you tampered with it. Just MAKE sure when ups drops off the replacement phone its in the box they tried to hand me an empty box once and leave. if u get a box that's not rapped in plastic don't accept the delivery if u do and phones missing tmobile wil charge your account $400 (bad experience my fiance accepted an empty box...) good luck man

Just got an incredible. Have some questions.

I just got my incredible last Saturday cause I thought the Droid X was too laggy. Im a little bit familiar with rooting as I had my old g1 rooted and flashed a bunch of custom roms to that.
I've been researching the Droid incredible rooting process and think I wanna do it. But I have some questions first.
1. I'm currently on the latest OTA update. If I root, is there an easy way to go back to stock if I wanna claim warranty or download the gingerbread OTA when it comes out? If so how?
2. Is this stable for a rookie programmer to do? What are the odds i'll brick it?
Thanks for all your help in advance!

Unrevoked is simple. Couldn't be any easier really. Cake walk compared to rooting my D1.
Haven't gone back to stock on the incredible, but did it for a friend on the D1, and it was simple. I have seen people say that going back to stock on the Incredible is simple also.
As far as Gingerbread goes, we (rooted Incredibles) will most likely have it first, because of leaks. We already have several ROM's with the Gingerbread keyboard, and the ROM is sure to follow shortly.
I would suggest you Root. You wont regret it. The Dev's for the Incredible are fantastic. They are all making quality ROM's and you will love them. Guaranteed!
The only thing tricky in rooting the Incredible is the SLCD screen causes issues and you have to have a zip file on your SD card. The tutorial will link to it.

The only thing I'm worried about is if I have an SLCD or not and unrooting instructions. Every search I do only comes up with an unroot back to stock method for 2.1 eclair that doesn't work on froyo.

Well, the rooting Part is extremely easy. But, when using unrevoked make sure you select a custom recovery image, that works with sLCD incredibles (i have one), or else you can't see anything going on with it. (black screen white lines, driver issue). If you want ill post a link up. But I rooted mine the second day I had it, and this is my first smartphone period. And I took java 1 and 2 last year in highschool, so i am no programmer. Its incredibly easy.
Now, I havent come across anything, anything for unrooting. So, if you can wait, dont root.
And..pretty sure, when you get the Gingerbread OTA, it will unroot your phone, and bring it back to stock.

Just go for it and root it. I was worrying about it for months and then I did it and was rooted in 10 minutes and had a custom ROM installed within 2 hours WITH all my data restored.
Incidentally, I can easily recommend Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS4 ROM for Incredible http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809985
It's insanely fast and stable, and the overclocked kernel gets surprisingly good battery life. And, go through some of the extras for it in that thread if you take a look, some are quite handy like Hulu and the Supercircle battery.
Also, the flipclock actually flips

Will I be able to re SOn my device so I can claim warranty if it ever breaks after that unroot tutorial?
Sent from my Droid Incredible using the XDA app.
Should be a way on here, but if you treat your Incredible well/decently, it's not gonna break/a better phone will be out by then anyway. The benefits of root greatly outweigh the voided warranty. (My personal thoughts on "Manufacturer's Limited Warranties", however, could be an entire thread by themselves)

The only thing I'm really worried about is my warranty and being able to unroot back to stock if I need to send it in(i have a knack of bad luck of phones breaking for no reason and me breaking phones)
I treat my electronics well. I just don't have the money for a new 500 buck incredible . I'm a struggling 18 year old paying for college and a car as well.

Yes- first step in the tutorial is actually how to turn s-on if you so choose.
As far as the custom recovery image goes, here is the basic instructions from the first link posted regarding the recovery.
Step 3A- For those with SLCD screens (Sku ends in 3) start here:
NOTE- You'll see a black screen with white bars if you go into recovery. DO NOT PANIC- we're going to fix that right now by doing the following:
Unplug your phone and close the unrEVOked window.
Download the following file and extract it somewhere you will remember: http://dougpiston.com/files/Recovery...MG_cwm_mod.zip
Start the unrEVOked tool again and go to file -->custom recovery.
Select the recovery.img that you extracted.
Plug in phone (charge only), enable usb debugging and let the tool run.
Note: If tool hangs at waiting for reboot (safe to unplug), that's normal. Unplug the phone and plug it back it. The tool should now saw "complete".
Turn phone off and reboot into HBoot by pressing the power and volume - (down) buttons at the same time
Continue with instructions in Step 3B

Heh I bet I have less money..... 15 yr. old highschooler with no job and $25 every 2 months from my grandma
I've broken my fair share of electronics, and have had faulty ones; from what I've seen Incredibles are insanely reliable (though most modern smartphones are).
However, rooting isn't for everyone. Like it says in the root tutorial thread, don't root to be cool. Do it if you actually want/would use features of root, esp. custom ROMs.
I came from a sprint hero. and ended up with a Slcd DINC. After reading up rooting took all of like 5 mins. But I bet I have less money.. 3 girls in school. and a wife in RN school. Im the only one working, lol But then again. my cars and such are paid for. no bill outside the norm. and my cells..
Just ordered the seidio rugged case etc.. to protect my DINC... cant wait. cause I sure cant afford to buy a new one if it breaks.lol

[Q] EVO common probs and whatnot?

Whats going on dudes i been in the heroc forum since launch and finally decided to let her go. I know im a tad bit late but I got my evo over xmas and just had some questions that I thought id ask before I even attempt to root; i have 30 days to return it. I done some searching and came across a few threads of common probs so im gaining some knowledge. What does this so called "light leakage" look like and what should I look for. I also saw something about some peoples phones not holding 4g; how long should It hold 4g before it drops? I did see some users mention hardware version; mine says 0004. Sorry if im asking to much i just dont want to get really settled in and start noticing problems and i have to take it back. So what should i really be looking for to make the call to take this sucker back before 30 days is up. Thanks in advance

I cannot answer any of your 4g questions because I do not have our where I live.
Light leakage issue is because the screen can separate from the body of the phone. Hard to explain what it looks like. Mine had it slightly but does not bother me.
Fyi...if you flash a aosp rom your camera will most likely not work. 4g and hdmi will not work either until cyanogen and teamdouche get it working. Should not be too long at all for 4g on cyanogenmod. A couple weeks or so I would GUESS.
Don't take your evo back. If you have anything else you have a question about feel free to pm me

Well I'm in love with the device already I think I somewhat understand light leakage as my hero might have suffered from this(if its the same thing). I live in Houston tx the 4g seems ok but mine dropped 1 or 2 times but that should be no biggie. Lastly, thanks for the warm welcome and help man.

Hey there and welcome. Definitely stay with the evo. It's off the chain. Make sure you find the proper way to root your hardware version. I've heard it can be a little tricky. After you root I suggest using Myn's Warm Rom. It's based off stock but has several goodies. Sprint hotspot is unlocked, it's fast and snappy. I use Myn with Calkulins new kernel. It gives you awesome battery life. If you need some assistance with anything don't hesitate to PM me. I'm more than willing to help. Hope you stay and enjoy the ride.

That's sounds awesome and exactly what I want to do. My main goal is just to get root access and keep rockin sense; I just want to be able to remove the bloatware really i.e sprint nascar, football etc and unlocking WiFi tether. Unfortunately my phone came with 2.2(651.1) so I can't root just yet I don't think but day #3 with my evo is freaking sweet.
Sent from my new EVO via Tapatalk app.
Mine came with 2.2 as well.that doesn't mean you can't root it.you can root all evo's. Like I said before it's going to matter what hardware you have. It really depends on your hboot version. Power off the phone then while holding down the volume button press and hold the power button till the screen comes on completely. Now at the top you can see your hboot version.search the forum on how to root your version. If you have trouble finding the correct way pm me with your hboot version as well a your hardware version. You can find that in settings under about phone.look for hardware info.then it will be a 4 digit# such as 0003.

[Q] How to ROOT from OTO Gingerbread S-ON and back to CM7???

1) I rooted my EVO 4G using the following method: "How to Root the HTC EVO 4G with Froyo 2.2 [Video Walkthrough]"
2) I flashed many ROMs, but finally settled on CM7 (7.0.3.1 currently).
3) got excited that the official GB ota was available, so UNROOTED (back to S-ON)using "[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS"
4)Finally, i installed the OTA today.
MY PROBLEM:
I cant get back to Root & CM!!! there is not much help for this, ive been googling but cant find a method that will root my evo from S-ON/gingerbread (2.3.3)...or even back to Froyo...so that i can root and get back on CM.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS????
i just wanted to play around and see what the officail GB was like (knowing that i would LOSE root, not knowing that i wouldnt be able to GET BACK to root), and now im stuck in STOCK im desperate for all me settings, apps, and WAY OF LIFE with CM.

You cant root. You ****ed up. The new bootloader is locked so root has to be updated to work with it. Everyone said DONT UPDATE.
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
There are a couple of threads on the topic. Basically, with S-On, you are out of luck, and need to wait for a new rooting method. For future reference, no need to unroot to get the OTA upgrade. Either wait the day (3 hours in this case) for a rooted version, or just flash the OTA version. So long as you keep S-Off, you are OK for flashing ROMs and stuff.
Probably gonna be awhile because HTC waited until the gingerbread root methods were patched before releasing the update. Honestly, I'm impressed that they did that. It means they are paying attention to security holes and actually fixing them.
Your best option was to wait it out because rooted versions of the ota were being created. I find that better because you can just flash it to check it out and restore back when your done.

HELP!!!

im not a moron, and i was reading forums all day before during and after i did this, and never came across a single post that said you cant GO BACK AND RE-ROOT...i just assumed they were giving the obvious warning that your not gonna have root anymore so you'd have to redo it....i simply overlooked it in the middle of homework and laundry and taking care of my children. SO NO - I AM NOT A MORON, JUST A MULTI-TASKER WHO LIKES TO PLAY WITH MY PHONE!!!
you dont have to be so mean, just DONT REPLY IF YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY! BTW, its not YOUR phone i jacked up, its mine...so no need to get all heated about it anyway! (and its not even jacked up, just cant root for the moment)
I occasionally read these forums just because it is interesting...BUT I DONT SPEND MY WHOLE LIFE ON THEM...so i guess you have one up on me....
ps....im going to school for computer networking and i am NOT going to be a cranky and cocky techs....THAT IS MY PET PEEVE - PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ONE TOPIC and get off on belittling others who have expertise in OTHER areas.
wow....so rude. i thought these things were to be friendly and give advise, not try to scare away anyone thats not an expert....REAL WELCOMING!!!!
SORRY FOR VENTING - but you made an unnecessarily snide comment.
next time keep the S-off buddy and you can get back a custom recovery and all that jazz. sorry that you are stuck for now, but i'm pretty sure with all the awesome devs around that you'll be able to root gingerbread pretty soon
No, it's not snide.... Just since replying to your post, I've read 5 more form people doing the same thing just tonight, and if I REALLY want to sit here and copy and paste all night, I can point out a friggin' boatload of posts from people who unrooted.
Here's a good one you might have noticed right in this section:

Oh look, here's another one:

Why do you geniuses keep taking ota's when you are already rooted?????? Seriously every update it is the same thing. Just flash the rooted version of the update. All you had to do was wait a couple of hours for it to be uploaded to xda. Maybe its for he best if the people who made this mistake yet again never be able to root.

Jeez guys just let it go... The guy made a mistake im sure everyone hers f__ked up before.. Though I admit not as bad as this.. So at least point him in the right way... As far as I know gingerbread itself is unrootable... So you may be stuck for a while.. Check to make sure s is actually off
On a side note this is important to all of us.. What about all the 2nd gen phonea that are coming with s on and stock 2.3" .. Htc may say that they arent encrypting bootloadrra, but if we cant root that means sh_t.... Again this is beyond me, but at least lets focus on what needs to be done... Again this is gonna mess up everyone with a brand new evo or the 3d....

All phones are shipped with s-on, right? I'm confident a root method will come up.

Thanks....yes I made a mistake but I've only had my EVO, or any Android for that matter, for a couple of months so I think I've been doing pretty well until now with no help...just researching myself online and in the forums.
This was the first ota that came out since I rooted...now i have learned what not to do...and didn't know that the rooted versions pop up so quickly...hopefully they will release a new ota with the bootloader unlocked...and soon
Ps....I'm a girl. (Bobbi Linn)
Oh...noticed amazing battery life so far being stuck in stock...which is a plus!

I have a replacement Evo coming this week ( supposedly last week but apparently it's out of stock nationwide). We'll see what firmware it ships with.

Who and why are they gay? I thought this was about learning, manipulating and using new technology and software....can't we just be helpful instead of this? It's useless....someone may have done as I did and now have to read through and spend more time on this BS to get to the possibility of a solution.
So are you thinking that the refurbished phone will have a newer firmware? I don't know about that but it doesn't seem to make sense....is that some thing like asurion would do? And if you do get a new snazzy updated phone are you promising to donate your time to the cause??? Lol

[Q] After Power Button Pressed.....Stuck on Splash Screen made by SoCalDevs.Com

its rooted. s-off supersonic....i cant tell ya all the specifics of the phone but i wanted to change to 4g start up screen with the blocks and the start up sound. I think it was called a splash screen? Anyways. The phone doesn't hold a battery charge as it is. it went dead in my pocket and when i charged it back up and tried to start it up it just sticks on the splash screen i think its called? its a pic of my daughter and i. then usually it would then go to htc 4g evo quietly brilliant screen. it does not. the only thing it will do at this point is go to the screen of my pic i put in of me and my daughter. it does a lil vibrate for a sec as well. where do i go from here? lol lol im already invested in this phone for about two weeks of time. i get through everyother prob thanks to you guys but im stumped on this one.... please help...plus my screen is cracked. anyway to get a new screen cheaper than trying to use insurance to get a new one? thank you.....DuBBzILLa
Try to power off the phone. Then hold volume down + power buttons at the same time until the bootloader appears. Use the volume down button until RECOVERY IS HIGHLIGHTED, followed by the power button. You should see an option on the list to wipe. If you can, try to find and wipe only the Cache and then Dalvik cache. The reboot the phone.
got into clockworkmod

Can ya help me out with gettin my wifi back on and let me know two other things? can you get the alpha.apk or blackmarketalpha app american link. i downloaded it so i can grab apps for free but its in islamic writing. i can see some american writing but the site usaually crashes. and the other thing was how can i get the free hot spot wifi tethering? can some one line me up with what a rom is and which one is best for this htc evo 4g. i think i have a clue but im trying to get something where you can store up to 5 different roms on the sd card? also. i would like to get some links to some cool kernels. i have no idea what a kernel is either but some of these guru are blowing my phone out the water and i have the same phone. if poss. list the direct sites to guides and lead me to the up to date software outthere. is there anything i should be staying away from and i have cracked screen as well. is that easily replaceable because dubbzilla.weber is broke and has no insurance on this rooted device thanks short doggs. that was way cool of you because i almost chucked it into the mississippi. whew. amen to you guru's. what are you using and can ya teach me the way?

My friend it sounds like you need to take a ride over to development section ahd just read. There are tons of options for your Evo and the best bet would be to do some research on everything Sense, AOSP and MIUI roms. All have there pros and cons. Now for wifi tethering you can get that in the market. For up to date software just google latest software for your Evo. Not trying to discourage you but I think the more you learn on your own the better you feel at the end.
Cracked screen once again not sure where you live but check craigslist for people who fix them or once again check google. Take your time man and just read up on things it will be well worth it in the end to understand why you are doing what you are doing and not because a thread said you could....
