Easiest way to obtain a black notification bar? - G1 Themes and Wallpapers

So I've been reading everything I can while trying to follow the steps within all the guides I've found. I know everything I do is everything described in the guides but I can't get anywhere when I reach draw9patch. Just doesn't work. Can't figure it out for the life of me.
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and pretty sure I know how to get things to work most of the time, but this is quite the venture for me.
I should state now that I am new to the android platform but have a lot of experience with everything I've learned. I read every guide I find before making those changes to the actual device.
My Dream/G1 is rooted with Cyanogen... 4.2.1.11 and the Hard SPL.
ADB is established but fastboot is still a problem(for now).
I know how to push the framework-res.apk back to the device so my question after all this nonsense above would be
Can someone post a framework-res.apk with a black notification bar along with white text in all fields pertaining to such and have that be the only change within the stated framework-res.apk above?
This was my last resort. If this is a double post, I apologize.
I have searched the forums, google and etc...

I would suggest going to the market and downloading Metamorph. (either free version or donate version. Either will work)
Then go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589315 and scroll down a little bit (first post) and download the blackbar mod (under the "Morphs by AndroidFiend:" section)
You can have blackbars in less than 5 minutes following this route and there is nothing to edit. Metamorph seems to be the way of the future in themeing.

Metamorph Download complete!
Sorry!
The application Market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
FORCE CLOSE
I must install busybox and I will give update.
I am very stunned right now. I spent days trying to figure it out and you just ... Wow.
That's all I can really say...

Woot!
That worked.
I am actually a little mad. Not at you but at the fact that I spent about 2 days trying to figure it out.
wow

How to install NFSFAN's custom Roms

Hi i was wondering if there was anyone out there who was kind enough to explain in detail how to install this Rom because by the looks of the pictures and the reviews, it is a great Rom. OH and if there is an answer to this already, please direct me to it because i have searched for hours and cannot find anything.
Thanks in advance
How far is your knowledge when it comes to custom ROMs? Do you have your phone unlocked?
If your phone isn't unlocked, go here:http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
I could use a little help to. My phone is unlocked and I have flashed another rom before but when I download the rom file I can't do anything with it. I seem to remember using another program to handle the rom file before flashing but I have looked and looked and have come up empty handed. Someone pointing in the right direction would be great.
Basically I am stuck between getting the file on the computer and starting to flash. I can get my phone to the color screen and all.
Terms you should know before-hand, haha:
-The color RGB color screen is called the Bootloader mode (you get to it by holding the power button + camera button, and sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-Hard-reseting: Flashing the phone to default state of the flashed ROM. (Hold talk key + end call key, and sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-Soft-reseting: Simply restarting your phone. (Sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
0. Unlock Phone. (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370)
1. Go in to Boot-loader mode. (Text towards the bottom of the screen
should read "Serial" if you phone isn't connected to the PC.)
2. Connect phone to PC. ("Serial" text should change to "USB")
3. Extract the files from .rar file you download. (Use Winrar.)
4. Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe and follow the on screen instructions.
- Your phone will start showing a progress bar when the flashing starts.
- Once done, the phone will restart. (Should reset and windows should boot, but still do step 5.)
5. Hard-reset the phone.
6. Dance in place.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
*pants* Hope that helps!
Stickfigure, thanks a bunch for your summary of the ROM loading process! My Sprint Touch has been giving me lots of problems (freezing on incoming calls, data connection stops working randomly, phone not wanting to get out of roam and back into EV mode, and many many more). Needless to say, it is frustrating and I want to throw it at a wall. I'm sure my reset button is going to fail since I've poked it so many times.
Anyways, I've been wanting to install a custom ROM and finally have the chance during my spring break from classes, but I wasn't quite sure how to do it. Your post definitely helps.
One more question...is the process basically the same if I want to install a different custom ROM? If you know of any other tutorial or noob info pages that might help me I'd appreciate it too.
Thanks again!
Stickfigure, thanks for the instructions. Winrar was the piece that I was missing. Once I installed that I had the new rom installed the the phone was working fine in a bout 15 minutes.

There are some great tutorials out there for beginners, one of the best of which is Dharvey's "UPDATED- CONSOLIDATED Rev A./GPS TUTORIAL" found on PPCGeeks; it is no longer available for some reason, but you may be able to find a repost somewhere.
Thanx
Thankx every one who contributed to this thread because it really helped.

"Main Version Older" Cant Root!

Okay, So Ive Just Gotten My New Evo -Woot- About 2 days ago. Since then I have been wanting to root. Soo I've looked and looked to find a nice forum for me to root.
Note that the most ive done is Jailbreak an Ipod and Iphone. Compared to what Ive been reading up Rooting the evo is much more difficult.
Well I finally found a root that looked manageable.; The Simple Root. However when I try to do the last part and install the last version on Hboot it keeps giving me the error message of "Main Version is Older" Want To Reboot?
I dont know what it is that im doing. I Dont have wifi so this may be the problem. But Is there any other way that i can do a simple root without wanting to pull my hair out?
Much Appreciated !

Did you try this one?
uh ohhh... someone posted in the wrong foruuuuuuummmm...
Go to the q & a and search, I am sure there is someone with a similar issue. If I come across anything I will link
(now is a good time to take cover)
Which software version are you on? if you have the 1.47 update then you need to do the simpleroot for that, its here in the development section.
Or you can do this

follow toasts root method from part 1 to part 2, you will be golden. it's not that much work and as long as you follow each step you will be all set! good luck!!!!
I Did do the SimpleRoot but when i try to push the files i get a protocol failure. The bytes never move. It just stays at 0 the whole time. Eventually it says pushing complete but the protocol fails on me and the bytes never move
What worked for me is what seems to have worked for others - I can't find the page on the thread so this is from memory but i'm pretty confident in it...
FOUND THE LINK http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565&highlight=update+failed&page=104
disk mount the phone to the computer
erase the files that were pushed to the phone
- manually copy the files back to the phone
- re-start simple root at step 2
- when told to on the browser and go to that site, reload the page like 5-6 times
- keep the browser open when proceeding to the next step
- DON'T "press any key to continue" close the cmd prompt yourself by pressing "x"
doesn't really seem much different from the original steps but it seems to work try searching the simple root thread for the exact steps if this doesn't cut it for you...

Make sure you have USB debugging checked in Settings > Applications > Development.
I had the same problem today. You need to restart the whole process. DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING WHILE IT IS WORKING ON THE STEPS. If you click on another window or hit another key while you are running 1 of the steps you will mess something up.

Simple root(compared to joeykrim) for shw-m110s and galaxy cousins

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8406167&postcount=223
So this already has a home. But I'm seeing that it works, very likely in ALL galaxy S cousins, and in fact possibly even in all 2.1 and 2.2 android phones. This is NOT the joeykrim method but it's related (but simpler and better, and obvious to most of you devs). Sadly this slowly gets rediscovered somewhere about once every two weeks for the past couple of months . There's a thread in epic started a few days later with the same trick, and a thread on droid forums:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/re...08-multiple-phones-root-them-unroot-them.html
a couple of weeks earlier with the same trick. And a page on cyaongenmod where they show it for just one of the cousins.
It's nice for anyone who doesn't want to flash, and/or doesn't have a fully working recovery mode needed to use some of the one click methods (update.zip). Moreover... it probably works on pretty much EVERYTHING. The one clicks distract attention from the fundamental solutions because they don't always work on everything and new phones come out like popcorn.
Also I've included some useful related information about how to setup some of the popular initial root tools (with some personal bias, but not unlike a custom ROM), and how to undo it all. Making it a whole package custom ROM alternative (albeit a very lite alternative ). I haven't seen another post with all of this in one place.
I don't know where I should post this though because there is no general forum that I guess is likely to get read much that connects all the devices this may work on. But since it's working on more devices now and probably on froyo too, it seemed it might be helpful to someone to expose it a little beyond the shw-m110s sticky on issue 6. (even it has already been exposed before).
isnt this the same as superoneclick lag fix?
this didnt work for me on my i9000 froyo rom.
Ok.. well, does rageagainstthecage still work? Do you know? Did you try just that? the information "it didn't work" isn't very helpful. But then when you have one button you tend to get one response, and that's partly my point.
If you can get root with rageagainstthecage, the rest can all be worked out. And much more easily if more people in the community start to fear less the internals cause they're given information about what's going on, and it's VERY simple, as you can see in my post.. there's only ONE thing (properly installed su) you need to have root on ANY device. (getting root is a different issue, but the hard part is done) And there's no reason not to be explaining that in the BIG FAQ.
Indeed.. it looks like it probably is the same thing (but it's not really documented) . That did not exist when I first posted it.. hence why I worked it out myself. Personally I'm not a fan of one click anything, not as the primary reference at least. Because, ok.. it seems rageagainst the cage probably works on anything. A decent faq somewhere actually EXPLAINING what's required for root, and what rageagainstthe cage does (losely) and at least an example of how to use it on some device then is a good starting place for new phones.. new froyos.. good reference info.
However instead what happens is somebody else comes out with their latest method.. releases it as the mysupermagiconeclick method.. or even if it's script, without any explanation (and most people wouldn't understand, but maybe a few would). And then what happens?
Joeykrims script gets adopted on like 5 diferent devices where it isn't even needed(no offense to him.. he provided what he knew and got some people going who wouldn't have been otherwise). Multiple problems are created because of it. and that's not even a one click. That's a script for people who aren't too afraid to type script and still nobody noticed it wasn't needed?
Now a big one click comes out and someone just says "this doesn't work".
I see so many people saying "I don't know how to use adb" (even after you just told them "type adb push". It's very different that the winmo atmosphere a few years ago.
Anyway, I rageagainsthecage is the only alternative I know of to flashing or update.zip so it would be good if it got a little more attention I think and if people stopped treating the task of copying in 3 little files with permissions like some mystery work for "devs" to handle and folks to praise on high. I mean it's nice if someone can make a gui(and it takes work).. but it's amazing how hard it is often to just find an explanation of the very simple thing that's actually being done. (edit: even in Clshortfuses superoneclick thread.. he links to an older thread with the commands, but it's in page 49 or so.) There's like 5 commands needed with about 2 slight variations (nand unlocking and the setuserid joeykrim problem) that will root anything without flashing or destroying data, and that's not explained in a simple faq around here.)
By the way another reason it might not work is the rageagainsthecage exploit doesn't always (usually though) work the first try, and works better on some usb ports than others.

The Odin version seems to get well. But after reboot no root.
Then i tryed the SuperOneClick version.
I get this msg.

and I found the same thing on some german site.
maybe /data/local/tmp doesn't exist on froyo for I9000. If anyone was playing with a prompt and had instructions that point out that you only to need to copy it to ANY place where you can write and execute, they might figure out what's going on in one minute, and find another place to copy it to like just /data/local or wherever tmp got moved to. In every case I've seen problems, it was never that the exploit didn't work.
Now ok.. it's possible that somehow they've figured out a way to completely block writing new executable files anywhere from a shell. In which case it would need to get installed through an apk maybe, but it's still possible. Applications do run, all the time; so can this. Knowledge is power... not one click buttons.
ok then ill give you a bit more detail.
you are right, i cant see why it is failing although i can see where it is failing. if i had access to the script to see the steps its trying to take i could work it out but its compiled into a binary as far as i am aware.
the script pushes the file to the device, and it runs for the first loop. it installs the su command and superuser.apk, then loops back to make further changes (i.e. it kills adb and reestablishes a connection). when it loops back it tries to mount something, and fails saying "failed to find mount point" or something similar.
the su command works in shell/terminal until the phone is rebooted, then it is lost. the superuser doesnt work at all (i.e. no superuser requests are generated by apps requiring it, they just fail saying root not available).

Great it sounds like you basically understand what is going on and aren't afraid of a tiny bit of typing. I think MANY people fit that description including myself a few weeks ago. But... the steps are not usually explained as you say. So... click the link in my first post again. It's all explained there. I've started a section there on exceptions.. including what I think might be going on with yours, but your description is a little different from the ones I copied in, so we don't know yet. So go at it, and good luck. I'll be glad to help if I can but my crusade is to get more people who want to to be able to play with it themselves (and to be able to ask questions too, though especially when getting new devices/roms rooted)
I assume you know about adb and and how to run it by hand in the first place. I don't describe that and there are faqs that do, including I think the Big FAQ. That obviously must work first.
P.S. I may add some linux/mac scripts shortly... piece of cake to do.. already did it for the joeykrim method. CLShortFuse is adding linux support but it involves 175 MB of cross-platform compatibality libraries and is at least almost as hard to setup as it is to just use adb. To each his own. It's a neat accomplishment if it works.
For me I push the unroot script to my phone and can unroot when I walk in a store if I want to. I like Rynza's apk for that, but it doesn't work with my phone (3 button, yes... update option, no )
too much verbage for me daddybear...
but anyway ill give it a shot next time i need to root my device and let you know if i come up with anything useful.
The first to admit to cracking the code . But you only get full credit if you know the reference too!

actually.. if this is really true.. it's almost certainly a joeykrim style problem. The other symptoms are harder to follow, especially depending if superuser never worked or only didn't work after reboot. Anyway, this will certainly get resolved in time I'm sure. If you had su working at all.. then it's just a matter of applying the right tweaks/work arounds (which are likely already known).

Tutorial Somewhere?

Is there a FAQ or something somewhere that someone could point me to?
I used to have a Windows Mobile phone and learned all about custom roms, unlocking, how to install apps, create shortcuts, customize the home screen, etc.
Then I went to a Blackberry.
Now I've just purchased an Epic 4G and I feel like I have to start all over again.
When I say tutorial, I want to know what the general steps behind putting in a custom rom are, and little bit about the Android platform - base OS, added extras, how to install apps manually; it seems that manufacturers convolude the phones so much with their own stuff that I don't even know what a base Android install looks like.
Any help to point me in the right direction would be most appreciated.
Thanks!

First off, Welcome!
I hope you enjoy your time here and here is a link to the Epic 4g Wiki. If you run into issues, the forums moderators ask you to search first and only if you cannot find a solution to your problem that way then post your question. If you need specific help installing roms or cool fixes most of us would be happy to oblige you!
1st: Look in the development section for the sticky that says 1 click root.
2nd: Follow Those Instructions, Really Easy..
3rd: Come Back to the development section then look for a kernal or rom or both.
4th: once you find that copy them to somewhere on your sd card.. then Hold the camera button, powerbutton and volume up and down.
5th: you should now be in a green menu called clockwork mod
6th: now navigate in clockwork (with the volume up and down and camera to select or the dpad on the keyboard and enter to select) goto Install zip from sd card then select choose zip
7th: valah Flash away!!
Make sure you read instructions for flashing certain froyo roms and read up on everything before you do it, thats all you have to do is follow instructions and read!!
Hope this helps
Have a nice day!!
Oh come on, you couldn't find it? All you have to do is click on Wiki at the top of the page that takes you completely away from the Epic4g section. Then you have to look on the right under Samsung Smartphones and select Samsung Galaxy S. Then you have to scroll down and click on SPH-D700. If you click on the picture of your phone you will be taken to a completely irrelevant page dealing only with the image. You cannot click on Epic4g as its not a link. Easy as Apple pie.
/ridiculous sarcasm
Why is there not a sticky discussing basic topics like rooting and Odin and rom flashing and themes? Are we trying to make it as difficult as possible for new users to drive them away or something?

Looking for a Dev for Advice in Cooking a ROM

I've read through the forums, done a lot of reading through a TON of resources over the past few weeks. I know I should learn some Java and probably learn how to build an app or two for Android but I'm a bit short on time with everything going on in my life and want to learn as I go. Trying to learn Java online gives me a headache since I'm sure there is no shortway of learning it and that is all there is online -.-'
I am looking for a developer to help me "cook" up a ROM. I'll start with what I have done and what I know. Maybe someone could add in some information or tips/suggestions/tweaks that I could use that would be helpful. This is the first time I'll be attempting to build my own ROM since my Touch Pro days so please bear with me.
I have tried to look at different resources but most of it gets tossed over to the Hero. I'm not sure how similar they are but I rather not risk it.
What I have done:
Setup Kitchen via Cygwin.
Downloaded Stock RUU For 3.70 base.
Set home folder.
What I know:
What most of the options do in the Kitchen
How to add and remove applications from the working folder.
(SHHH I'M NEW TO THIS!) lol
What I want to know:
How to add themes
How to add radios (included in the ROM)
Dalvik moved to cache instead of eating up main memory
SNQ 4 in 1 Reboot MOD
Power Control Notification Bar MOD
Automatically Zipalign all apps after each boot (Is this just option 6 in the kitchen?)
How to pull the latest .apk files to update my ROM. (Do I just update via the Market on my phone and then go into system/data to get the latest .apk file? Not sure)
How to add kernels (included in the ROM) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7628768&postcount=1664
-I found this but I am a bit confused. Lets say I want to use netarchy's 4.3.1-bfs no havs kernel. I looked through the .zip file and saw theres 3 folders. kernel, META-INF, and system. What do I do with these? Or do I just deal with the zip. Need someone to walk me through this or point me in the right direction.
Thanks to everyone who responds in advance. (I hope someone does)

If I'm not mistaken, most of the things you want to do would probably have to be done manually.
You can zip align and add the radios through dsixda's kitchen but the themes need to be added to the framework. apktool will work for this but this is where knowing java comes in handy.
When looking at a kernel like Net's the zImage file is the actual kernel, you'll want to use the kitchen to add that to the boot.img and the other lib files, etc, you can copy to the ROM.
To add and remove files usually I'll just keep an open copy of the zip and work with it through file explorer. Just rezip & resign it once your done and you should be good to go.
I keep a copy of Ubuntu running in Oracle's VM for the kitchen and mounting image files, it may take a minute to set up if you aren't familiar with linux but it makes it easier to pull stuff out of update zips.
well since you are just starting out, xhausx's info is great and ive used simalar methods b4 for testing. But i reccomend buying first at least 2(or more) Java books and read them, because cooking a rom isnt just gonna hapen in 1 day and takes some knowledge of java to make a rom.
Later down the road i reccomend trying to learn how to make a rom thru Terminal(in Linux) as ive heard can do alot more.
So, if i were u i would use the method above.
All this INFO i posted has either come from other devs or google(Who is your friend), so take what you want from this and learn then begin Building your ROM.
Yeah I'm a Google whore. Been trying to find a few good self-learning books with Java. Tried some online tutorial pages and I have the JDK. Made a "Hello World" program just to see if I could get it to output but maybe I missed something but I can't seem to get it from .java to .class LOL (JAVA NOOB!)
Anyway, I'm probably going to find a few books and get reading. I'm probably also going to be tearing through a few of the ROMs on the forums to see how they set their files up and just do some messing around. I hope to God I don't brick my phone lol.
Didn't really expect to build a ROM anytime soon. Wanted to learn so I could try my hand at developing something. Always wanted to make an app but never had the time to do so. Guess its time now lol.
Thanks for your info guys.
