Ive been running CyanogenMod V4.0.4 for a while now with No problems
last night I decided to Install a theme with the CM updater and went with Dark Dream
everything seemed fine till about 12 noon today
In those 2 hours I lost 3g and can only get on edge
Rebooting fixed this for a short while. Then it was stuck on edge again
rebooting took forever and it was still stuck on edge.
then the phone rebooted itself about 3 times randomly
Now i cant get the phone to boot past the G1 screen
any ideas? I do have a nandroid backup from last week and even though thats easy I am hoping i dont have to do that
Thanks in advance
I forgot to add that it is the latest stable release of the theme from the CM updater
and i cant boot into recovery mode, it is just stuck on the G1 screen
basically, if you flash a theme, and then want rid of that theme, you flash over the current cm your running. so if you still have it, try flashing it over the top.
if not, nandroid restore.
double. pardon my dust
p.s there is a new cyanogen mod out, id upgrade to that if i were you.
isnt the newest CM still experimental ?
at any rate My phone is stuck on the G1 screen and i cant get into recovery
Ok, went away while the Phone was stuck on the G1 screen
battery died in a hurry, plugged it in and it booted fine
Still on edge but once charged ill see if i can get a better signal
I guess I like the theme enough to give it another try as i dont see anyone else with these issues
and for the record i did try the latest CM experimental build 4.1.999
and it was BLAZING fast. the only reason i went back to 4.04 is because I couldnt get my browser and market working even with a wipe following the CM steps
I may try to wipe the SD card and re do the partion if things are still not stable with the theme and 4.0.4 .. thank god for nandroid haha
Yea- this doesn't surprise me, as that theme messed up my phone bigtime- try to pull the battery, do a "recovery boot" when you put it back in, and see if you get there after that- chris
Hmm, well the phone seems fine for now
but you have me wondering if it will happen again
I couldn't get the phone to go into recovery, I think i got lucky after waiting a while
I guess I will look into re doing the partion and trying 4.1.999 again
I really loved the speed and smoothness and if i can get market and the browser working like everyone else it will be great. i can wait on bluetooth to work as i dont use it much lately
this should be in the Q&A thread
but anyways i would flash cyans latest release if i were you
I don't understand. This theme works fine for me! Never had any trouble with it.
Just like when some people have an issue with a rom that others dont
I imagine it could be any number of reasons.
now i am running 4.1.9.9 and though i had issues with the phone turning off and freezing on the G1 screen it hasnt happened in 4 days and i havent done a thing
You have to remember that sometimes the .zip files simply get errors for some reason. If you read around you will find a number of people who try and install only to get an error, then then restore via nandroid and re-download the file and re-apply and it works. If you are using the browsers google chrome, Safari, or EI, I would say switch to firefox when it comes to downloads of .zip files. I have noticed that I have 100x more errors when not using firefox.
i had dark dream on 404 before and it slowed my phone down so much i didnt even care for the theme anymore. seems all cyanogen roms WITH a theme die. except his his older ones.
Thanks for taking your time and helping me, I saw you guys(and girls) have done some pretty amazing things here at XDA. I just need some help with getting this Gingerbread ROM to work.
I'm using Supersonic 2.2.1 first off, and using the alter. recovery rom from Rom Manager.
Ok, so I rooted my phone using rEVOked and chose a ROM called Bc-Gingerbread-beta4. I'm not sure of the eact title used, but if anyones faimilar with Gingerbread ROMS, they should know what that is... It was on the EVO ROM page.
So at first, I was using ClockWorkMod Recovery (2.6.*) to try and install the ROM. I eneded up with status 7 ever time, so I tried to upgrade to 3.0.* (newest one) and recieved a error about not being able to flash. No details were given.
I tried flashing to the alternate recovery, and it worked. From their, i (un?)successfully installed the ROM according to the recovery application.
The status bar didn't move past the halfway mark, but i figured it was just how it worked..
Then, I tried to boot into the new ROM. I was on the HTC screen for about 3~5 minutes, then it showed me the android load screen instead of the usual Sprint/4G screen. From their, it was in a constant loop because every 3 to 4 seconds, it would take off the android logo, then place it back. I waited approx. 10 minutes... Nothing. Unfortunetly, the alternate screen doesn't have the option to browse for your nandroid back ups (mine aren't in /android) So i'm left with a relativly bricked phone until I can find a working ROM.
I have a microsd card reader.. so I'm not too terribly screwed, I just need help on what I did wrong, how can I fix it (if im able to), and what Gingerbread ROM I should use. It needs to be relativly stable. I don't care about 4G support, even though its almost everywhere in Atlanta. I'd like to have video rec. if possible. and 8MP support.
If it fits those standards, please, I'd like to hear what the community thinks is a great Ginger ROM.
Also, I'm using Windows. I have the adb shell installed, and im familair with basic-medium level terminal commands.
Edit: I'm going to flash again, using cm_supersonic_18.zip. It says installing update, but it says flash zip from sdcard in the main menu...
Edit #2: apparently it's a Cyanogen mod (#7)
Just keeps looping the android on the skateboard screen... I'm going to figure out how to get back to the clockwork recovery console and -hopefully- get this thing working.
Heres the main question at hand before you read my large summary.
1) Why is my ROM's boot image looping constantly?
2) Do I have to NAND again if I revert to a nandroid backup that was made before I nand'ed my phone?
Time for the long, and mostly pointless, summary:
I'm pretty desperate to get things running on a Gingerbread ROM, if you didn't notice in my last topic 2 hours ago.
Anyways, I'm trying to get cyanogenmod7, Stock Gingerbread 2.3.1, or heck, even eVOKINGS-gingerbread ROM to work.
So far, i've tried Cyanogenmod7 and Stock Gingerbread 2.3.1 on my evo; none of which have worked past the boot screen.
Lets take stock gingerbread for example:
I downloaded the new cyanclockwork recovery rom off of rom manager and flashed it after a *long* process of nand'ing and rooting again.
Then, I powered down, booted up, and went straight into recovery in the bootloader. I went to install ROM from SD->chose the .zip .
after waiting for awhile, it said the upgrade was complete (upgrade?)
*notice: the installation bar didn't move at all durring the installation process, if that makes a difference
I rebooted, and was greeted by the HTC screen while it spelt out q-u-i-e-t-l-y-b-e-a-u-t-f-u-l
Nothing happens after that.
It just shows the HTC screen again, getting stuck at the B in beautiful. Pretty much just looping over-and-over again.
Same thing happened for Cyanogenmod7, I was constantly being looped through the skateboarding-droid figure.
I'm doing something wrong here obviously, because all these ROM's have screen captures from a EVO 4G.
Does it make a difference if I use Clockwork recovery 3.0.0.7/6/5? or 2.6.7?
Please help.
I know all my questions are rather long and complicated, but im sick of being ignored at every forum (ubuntu forums, black ops, etc.)
Or I'm impatent and overestimated your forums activenes. No disrespect to the forums or devs (I thought your forum was really active)
Edit: If I for some reason can't get a 2.3.1 ROM to work, would someone kindly point me to a stable Froyo ROM they think is the best?
Have you use amo-ra?

I'm pretty sure you will still have nand unlocked. The only way you wouldn't is if you unroot.

Thanks
I should face-palm myself. I just read the sticked post and I'm going to try some of his suggestions. He pointed out why cyanogenmod wouldn't work.
My whole consept of the framework went out of the window, and now I think of it more like a standard linux distro, in terms of kernel->ROM relationship.
I don't think I need to have a custom kernel for the Gingerbread beta-4, but i'll look it up just in case... Though I don't have a clear idea on how to flash that.
And to the person 2 above, im using Cyanclockwork. For whatever reason, I like its design verse RA recovery. I might try RA recovery just to see if it works better, as everyone has said it does.
I think i needed to clear all my caches and then load the ROM.
So I did a wipe of everything (data, darvik, cache) and trying to install the GB ROM. My boot screen is *still* looping. Do I need to get another kernel? Is it like flashing a ROM? Where are they at? I didn't see any in the software section...
Hello,
Last night I rooted my device using this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265429) method and file from zedomax and everything worked great except when I booted my device there was a yellow triangle with a black “!” in it. I figured that just indicated the device was rooted or running a 3rd party kernel so I didn’t worry about it.
Today I launched my camera app and it failed to load the interface but showed the image from the camera momentary then crashed back to the home screen. I restarted my device and when the device restarted it was very slow and unresponsive and after unlocking it my live wallpaper was gone replaced with the last background I used before selecting a live background a couple weeks back. No icons or widgets loaded and I am unable to open the settings tray. The only things I am able to do with the phone is pull down the notification bar, respond to text messages, adjust the volume and hold power to restart the phone. All of which are very slow and delayed.
When I connect the device to my computer windows is no longer able to load the drivers and Kies is unable to connect with the device. I am not sure what caused this or how to resolve this issue so any advice or known fixes would be fantastic! I am unable to get to clockwork mod to restore my backup and I am unable to get to Kies or the phone settings to do a factory reset so I really don’t know what to do they were supposed to be a last resort and now I don’t even think I can do them. I am an experienced techie but I am new to android and this is the first device I have rooted so any advice would be great no matter how basic it may be.
UPDATE: I just connected the phone via USB to my laptop at work and it was able to discover and install everything it needed to connect with the phone. I am installing Kies now so at least there is hope of a factory restore, although I really hope it doesn't come to that!
Boot into download mode and flash the stock eg30 tar file from crawrj.

Still no touchwiz... great!
Try flashing a stock rom via clockworkmod.

You can root again and restore your backup, or go to this website www.lostandtired.com (midnight roms blog) click on android development and download and flash the sprint bloat and TW restore zip. Hope that helps.
I flashed the stock rom which didn't change anything so then I used clockworkMod to do a factory reset which ended up trapping me into a boot loop. I could use Odin to flash new roms but the device would never go past the 4G logo
I ended up taking the device back to Best Buy and since the loading screen showed the stock rom and they couldn't get past the 4G logo I just had to say it wasn't rooted and they gave me a new one.
I would love to know if anyone has any idea of what went wrong here so that I can feel comfortable rooting again. Also if anyone has some basic articles handy that teach basics of rooting that would be great, I didn't even know about clockwork mod until after I had this problem so knowing things like that earlier would have helped a lot I think. I'll be spending the weekend looking up everything I can find on the subject so any reading you guys can suggest would be fantastic.

If you a clockwork and "stock rom" you were still rooted...Doing a factory reset will send you into bootloop when rooted. Trying to flash other roms on a bootloop is not going to work. You need to have grabbed a backup such as Zedo has on his post and put the backup in clockwork folder on your phone. Then flash that in CWM. Would of brought you out of bootloop to a stock rom with his kernal. Now you can flash Roms and kernals or could of flashed crawf or anyone else FULL stock rom and been back to stock kernel and rom and not rooted.

Ohhhh that's what happened! Awesome thanks. I will be much better prepared with backups out the wazoo this time haha.
Now if only I could figure out why Touchwiz died in the first place hmmm....
I hope you can figure it out, just postin here to say that when I saw this thread, it reminded me of the thread over in the EVO forums about the guy who claimed that sprint removed his Sense from his phone.

haha SPRINT removed it?! So that person thinks sprint monitors every device and has a team of techies on staff to hack your phone and brick it if you break their rules?... yeah that totally makes more sense than a file got corrupted when you were messing with the kernel.. some people maybe shouldn't be rooting their devices in the first place haha
So I was trying to put the new 7.1 Cyanogen Mod on my Defy
where should i start lol....
so i had a type of clockwork mod, but i couldnt boot into (except from an app i had) and it didnt say clockwork mod when i did but it had ALL the same features as CWM... i used this method because i was having trouble putting CWM on my defy...
so anyways, that seemed like it would work fine, and all the steps did in fact work flawlessly, when it came to flashing Cyanogen, I noticed it only took like 5-6 seconds flat, seemed odd, and during reboot it just froze at the CM logo (said Google, the 1st O had a motorola symbol instead of a O, and the 2nd O had the little android skater guy in it)
keep in mind i cannot boot into clockwork, so basically i had a bootloop it seemed. So i found another tutorial for flashing the phone back to a regular firmware using RSD lite, (used RSD Lite 4.9 and tried ALL the 2.1 and 2.2 stock roms for US)
every time it seemed to work but upon reboot it would just stay black, and white light at top was on, could not boot phone at all (not into bootloader or recovery) and it only shows anything when i plug it into usb (the white light at top comes on)
ok so i read on that tutorial at the bottom a few people had the same brick issue, and a guy figured out that a specific version and the 5.3.1 RSD Lite (i tried using the US roms again, still didnt work even with 5.3.1) and it worked! but now i am stuck at a vodaphone version (i think it was vodaphone, it has a red motorola boot logo now)
ok i think i summed about everything up that happened
now for the questions!
I would like to get the new cyanogen but i do not want to end up with a non booting phone again, and I am not sure how to go about it with my new rom...
im somewhat new to this (have rooted and hacked tons of phones, but the flashing thing is new to me)
so can somebody help me out? i DO NOT want a brick, but i want the new Cyanogen (or at least the original US ROM!)
ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANK YOU! IF YOU NEED ANY MORE INFORMATION PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL PROVIDE IT!!!
as long as you didn't flash a full gingerbread sbf you can definitely go back to stock US rom or CM7.... ALWAYS WIPE FROM RECOVERY before you flash a sbf..
Next time install bootmenu and you can access custom recovery in the event of a bootloop! Only flashing sbf will remove bootmenu!
P.S. bootmenu includes custom recovery aka CWM
If I were you I would root the rom you are running, install bootmenu, enter custom recovery, WIPE DATA/CACHE, then flash CM7
If you want to go back to stock US rom: WIPE DATA/CACHE from stock recovery, pull battery, re insert battery holding volume UP to enter bootloader then flash sbf....voila
well like i said my computer is giving me problems (or perhaps its not even the computer), ive tried to get bootmenu to install, i dont understand why its having problems, as ive rooted phones on this computer, and adb executes perfectly find, but when i try to run ANY adb commands (after running the exe in CMD), it gives me the ADB IS not a recognized command or whatever....
so I have to tell you i am not sure where to go from here...
i followed the
/wiki/Motorola_Defy:_Full_Update_Guide (wouldnt let me post full name because i havent posted 8 times yet *sigh*)
guide for installing the bootmenu, and like i said adb doesnt function... i even let it fully update, instead of picking the 2 that it needs for adb, and it took a while, but worked perfectly, and even worked flawlessly during the test afterwards, it shut down and started adb shell or whatever it says, and had no problems, but when i run cmd and try to acctually use it (like the guide shows you specifically for the defy) it doesnt work...
SO IS THERE ANOTHER METHOD OF INSTALLING BOOTMENU AND CWM???
because i tried ROM manager and of course it says it cant install CWM to the defy, and has to be done manually, which is what brought me here... would love to try the new gingerbread, very sad my Dell Streak cant get it, so this is my next best thing... i even ordered a new earpiece to fix the notoriously defective one (mine is out, like everybody elses lol)
so again any help appreciated

Well I used to install bootmenu using adb but lately I'm just lazy LOL. Now I just install it from market just search defy 2nd init or just search defy and you will find one called defy 2nd init. Install it and run it, then from within the app install bootmenu!
This is definitely the "easy" way to install bootmenu!
P.S. They recommend rebooting your phone twice before using bootmenu after it is installed. Then reboot again and when the blue LED flashes press volume DOWN to enter bootmenu..... GOOD LUCK post back with your success!!
P.P.S DON'T install any other version of CWM after installing bootmenu as this will screw it up. CWM is included with bootmenu
WELL LOOK AT THAT i may have figured something out by that message you posted
so i remember installing 2nd init already... lmfao... and i do recall a blue light blinking once when booting my phone, is this normal or only when bootmenu is on the phone? i may have just not been booting into CWM the right way hence i didnt think i had it
so is that true? is the blue light only when bootmenu is installed?
and how do you boot into bootmenu?

Yes.
Press Vol- as soon as you see the blue led.
Sent from Android 2.3.7
ok im gonna try and do it all over and see what happens
kinda nervous haha
but anyway, im trying to root (superoneclick said it worked, busybox installed and i have superuser, but no root access... so i am running gingerbreak right now to see if it works)
and when im done....
i download 2in it or whatever its called xD and then get ROM manager and try to flash CM7 correct?? can you give me a little better detailed step by step
(and by the way gingerbreak still says rooting ... running exploit ... so im not sure if its just taking a while or is stuck... ill post in a few minutes and let you know what happened)
assuming it doesnt work, what should i do?
just like ryan8r said press volume DOWN when blue light flashes. Then select recovery by using the volume rocker to move selection up or down and pressing power button to make your selection. Next choose stable recovery and your in
---------- Post added at 12:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 AM ----------
you need to reboot after rooting to get root access! and NO DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER. just download the cm7 .zip put it on your SD and go into bootmenu then recovery then stable recovery. Wipe data/cache. Then choose install zip from sd card, then choose select zip from sd card then select your cm7 .zip. Then flash gapps after it finishes
if you don't flash gapps you will not have market
sorry maybe i should have explained better, i did get a blue light, before i bricked and then finally got it to start back up with the vodafone flash, the blue light doesnt come on anymore...
and gingerbreak didnt work, so im stuck without a root, i need root to get 2nd in it so i can get CWM and then get CM7
so right now my only delay is getting this damn this rooted, i dont even remember what i rooted it with to begin with, been a while, im trying superoneclick 1.7 because i used to have problems with 2.1.1, and this time (instead of "working" and not showing any errors) it just crashed, so should i try it once with 2.1.1?
and if that doesnt work how should i root it?
like i said everything worked, i have busybox, superuser, i even set superuser to automatically ACCEPT any requests, and still not working... no root...
Reboot to get root access
hmm did you mean for superoneclick or gingerbreak?
i believe i tried rebooting after both but ill try just to make sure
I have always used SuperOneClick 1.6.5 with NO problems ever! Maybe the sbf you flashed gives you troubles. If all else fails try wiping and reflashing a different sbf like nordic or cee. I ALWAYS have to reboot after rooting to get root
tried to edit last post but it didnt work?...
anyways!
yes that worked reboot gave root access, so correct me if im wrong
now i download 2nd in it (and run right?) and then ROM manager after im down with 2nd in it (and should i try to boot into CWM to make sure 2nd in it is working?
read my previous post #8 DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER and DO NOT INSTALL ANY OTHER VERSION OF CWM after you install 2nd init
---------- Post added at 12:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:53 AM ----------
Booting into CWM is done by entering bootmenu at boot by pressing vol- when blue light flashes and then selecting recovery
ok so no ROM manager, got it
i have 2nd in it installed now and i just tested it, opened into bootmenu beautifully
let me read what you posted to see where to go from here
edit:
ok can you please give me the link i need for the new CM7 (for defy of course) and a link for the Gapps ill need? thanks in advance for the help!!
edit AGAIN:
can you give me a step by step of the installation of CM7 and gapps install, sorry if im making you repeat yourself just want to make sure i dont mess this one up
almost done just need a little more help!
can somebody give me a link to the new cm7 (for defy of course) and a link to the Gapps? i found the link for the cm7 but cant find the Gapps, and i would rather go with links from people who have been there ^^
sorry for double post, just really need some help here!
edit:
found the links xD dont call me stupid! lmfao

Depending on which version of CM7 you want ie:Quarx's RC1.5 or official CM7 You will find both in the development section here. Both have links to gapps
Quarx's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
Official http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297559
Have fun!
---------- Post added at 01:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:47 AM ----------
Quarx is the original dev who brought us CM7 for our defy's
The official CM team just released theirs a couple days ago
Both are great ROM's try em out for yourself. I just switched from Quarx's RC 1.5 to Official just today and have had no problems so far. RC 1.5 has the option of 720p video recording if you have RED lens
haha thanks a ton, i acctually figured it out and got flashed before i saw your last post ^^ but thank you so much, wouldnt have figured it out without you guys lol!
everything seems to be running flawlessly, gapps and all
and it seems much quicker and everything is just nice looking, huge improvement from 2.1-2.2 for SURE, im already stoked, gonna have to let my girlfriend rock the Streak 5 for a while, so i can break in this new ROM ;]
just 2 more questions if i can!
1. i was wondering what i should use to overclock, i used Milestone Overclock on the stock ROM and it worked very well, but i am curious if there is anything better i can use (or if i should just use Milestone again)
2. i ordered a replacement earpiece speaker thing for the defy (im not too inexperienced with hardware fixes, i have replaced screens and such, nothing a simple DIY youtube video cant fix) but I am just curious how hard it is to fix? just figured you might now, considering its such a common issue with Defys
AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH! LOVING THIS CM7 (btw 1st time ive acctually flashed a custom rom!)
Well CM7 is already overclocked to 1000 Mhz. You can control this in bootmenu under CPU settings. I recommend adjusting the vsel settings to improve battery life. Although battery life is great right out of the box
I run vsel 1 at 20, vsel 2 at 32 and vsel 3 at 56 300,600,1000 respectively. Play around and see what works for you
