I've been using the on-board GPS with Google Maps, which has worked well, but I find that I must run QuickGPS before GM will lock-in on any satellites. It will work fine during a given session, then the next day or if I change my location it will require me to run QGPS again. Is there an easier way than to run QGPS every time I want to use the GPS? Would it help to buy GPS software like iGuidance?
This is a VZW (CDMA) TP2 with the stock WM 6.1 ROM.
GM does take a while to lock the satellites. I have just gotten used to the wait. Hopefully they will look into this in future updates. GM on my Blackberry works great and locks pretty quickly.
I use GPS with maps and I get a quick fix easily.

Hello "iclick",
i have the same problem with my MDA Vario Pro 2 (HTC Touch Pro 2) with Windows Mobile 6.1. I would like to update to Windows Mobile 6.5 but i found the HTC GPS Tool. Now i can use my Navigon 7 and Google maps with GPS in any minutes .
Screenshots from the older Version vom HTC GPS Tool found her.
"Open Port." Press that. Then press Menu > Satellite. This will now show you satellites near you (red). When they turn green (it might take a while), you know you are attracting a satellite. Now, without closing HTC GPS Tool, open Google Maps and hit Menu > Use GPS. It should now get your location.

I have noticed that GM runs on my TP2 flawlessly until I run iGO8. After this, GM can not even find a GPS hardware. The only solution I found is to cycle the power (soft reset).

Sometimes I'll be on the road and it will not lock in any satellites unless I run QuickGPS first, even after waiting 10 minutes or more. If I don't use GM for a few days it will also not lock-in, although QGPS always revives it. Doesn't QGPS automatically download when you use ActiveSync if it is set to do so? Mine is set this way, but I don't understand why QGPS needs internet access from ActiveSync or wifi to work.
I confess I don't understand QGPS at all and can't find much info on it. Why does it need to be run at all, and why can't a program like GM do the same thing? I'm accustomed to GPS units that lock-in on their own.

Wouldn't iGo8 make GM unnecessary? I wouldn't mind trying iGo8 if it would eliminate the QGPS step every time I want to use the GPS.

Sure, iGO8 is a great navigation tool however sometimes GM is also welcome when sightseeing or planning a trip as you can see terrain as it is.
Regarding QGPS - there is no need to refresh ephemeredes database each time you run GPS related software.
The database is valid for a week so I programmed QGPS to refresh it automatically when it expires and it works fine for me for months - I use iGO8 on daily basis (driving >30000 miles a year) and never observed any severe issues with a fix time (it ranges from few seconds to 1min max).
I never have a problem with Google Maps on my Tilt 2, and I use a mix of TomTom, iGO8, GCzII, and other GPS related programs.
I do use GPSToday so it keeps the GPS pretty well primed, but it doesn't matter it takes the same amount of time for the GPS to warm up regardless of what application is using it. If an application gives up and closes the GPS it could take longer because then you have to reopen it and it starts over, GPSTest runs forever.
I never run QuickGPS anymore, it does it entirely on its own. Every time I look it's up to date so I don't bother to look anymore.

Chaps/Ladies (do we have any?!),
I've been using TT5 for a couple of weeks now, and have a strange problem! Every now and then, randomly, TT5 will just exit whilst navigating. I drove 170 miles yesterday and it closed itself four times, the phone was off on three of the four occasions, as was wifi and BT.
I've also had it freeze once or twice. The display just stops updating, though I can still tap the screen and exit cleanly. This used to happen more frequently with TT3.
I've only run TT5 on the new 1.40 ROM.
Anyone else suffering?
TIA
Dan

Argh! Another quirk. I think I'm gonna sell my XDA2s on Ebay, and buy a map, a diary, and a Nokia 1110.
I use TT5 daily & have never had a problem with it exiting. The display occasionally freezes, butI think I can put this down to when the traffic info is being updated because it only happens occasionally & it unfreezes after about 30 seconds or so

Are you on the same ROM as us, 1.40? I don't use TomTom Traffic, so that can't be related to my problem.

My experience is that TomTom 5 will not start calculating a route without a valid GPS device attached - I'm just going to verify that though

Well that shows how much I know about TomTom 5 . It is definitely possible to generate driving instructions without a GPS device attached 8) .
Go into the "Advanced Planning" option and simply pick your start and end points. You will then have a route that you can display as text, images etc, or even "demo" the route i.e. simulate it at speeds from 10% to 500% of "real time"

Ah right Which POI? Or just all POI's?

I switch off all POI.
Thank you.
Thanks Weasel. I'll go ahead and load TomTom5 before my GPS arrives.
I have an XDA IIs with TT3, after i first installed it noticed it would crash randomly, which became really really annoying. After messing around with settings and 3rd-party software, i got nowhere. So I removed the **** O2 software that comes with the IIs, low and behold no more crashing.
Is this also the case for TT5, I would like to know before upgrading?
Don't really want to have to turn off the POI's to make it work.
This is all pretty interesting. I'm running a 1.40 O2 ROM and TomTom is not-as-stable-as-it-could-be. I'm going to do some more qualitative analysis to try and work out which of the crappy O2 software is the culprit - or if it's TomTom itself.
We've got quite a few XDAIIs here and both of the ones with TomTom are flakey. More details to follow...
[edit] Should have said - this is TomTom Navigator 5, with both bluetooth and wired GPS receivers.
AFAIK, the O2 Active software produces a memory leak. There are suggestions that TTN5 also produces a memory leak on 640x480 VGA devices. Perhaps the two are interacting? (Yes I know the XDA2s isn't VGA). Try monitoring available RAM while TTN5 is running. If it constantly reduces it will reach a point where the s/w crashes.
Where are we?
@ all:
Anyone know a solution to this problem? Apparently we need to use the POI.dat file from earlier installations, i.e. 4 or 3 and it will only crash 1% of the time. Until there is a patch for this we will have to settle for this solution it seems.
BTW, does anyone happen to have the POI.dat file for the Benelux map, version 3 or 4? I seem to have "misplaced" my cd with the map on it, anyone can help a brutha out? PM me?
Cheers in advance!
I've switched off POI ( that's NP for dutch users ) so it's stable now.
Any word on the arrival of a patch for this problem?

Try without quick GPS and see what it is like. I have a TomTom GPS Bluetooth dongle and that sometimes takes about 10 minutes to get a fix.

Unlikley to be anything to do with needing a hard reset. Most likely not getting a good signal where it is mounted.
Try re-positioning it to a more open position in the car.

My Garmin takes approx. 1 minute from a cold start but that is using an external aerial.
My Orbit takes less than 30 seconds outside the car but a few seconds longer inside the car (mounted about 15cm from the heated screen)
Get a lock before you start moving.
Stationary with good sky visibility and updated quick GPS should only be about 30 seconds, a minute if you've moved considerably from the last location GPS was used.
Alter your routine.
Get in car, place artemis in cradle, turn on, start Tomtom.
THEN get comfy, seatbelt, CD selection etc, by the time your starting the car up, Tomtom should be locked.
Also make sure software is up to date, for Tomtom thats version 6.03, I don't know about Garmin, igo etc
Thanks for the replies.
I was in a friends car recently, she was using her own pda. I can't remember what is was, not an xda product I don't think, and it had a flap lifted to allow the built in gps receiver to work. Not only did she get a fix in about 30 seconds, but she got it on the move. Her software was not one of the big names and I can't remember what it's called. I had my MDAC3 on me and while in the car I loaded tomtom. On the way to our destination it got a fix after a few minutes. On the way back, couldn't get a fix for the whole journey.
Anyway, just now I stood outside my house for about 3 or 4 minutes and tomtom wasn't finding a signal. I went inside, downloaded the latest quick gps, went outside and it got a fix in a minute and 3/4. Unloaded tomtom and reloaded it and it then got a fix within a few seconds. I suspect in an hour or so it'll take around 2 minutes again. I guess quick gps does work after all. So it looks like if I load tomtom from cold, it's always gonna take around 2 minutes. Not terrible, but just wanted it quicker.
One other thing, someone mentioned the dopod rom on another forum, and I quote:
"Has anyone else noticed that the MDACIII takes an outrageously long time to get a first fix?
Well here's something interesting... I reflashed the missus' MDACIII using the latest Dopod ROM (which is great anyway), after using imei-check's SIM / CID unlocker. After doing so, in testing so far, it gets it's first fix a LOT faster!
I'll test more over the next few days, but this could suggest a problem in the T-Mo ROM?"
Here's the thread. I posted in it at the end but noone responded yet.
http://www.modaco.com/MDACIII-long-time-fix-t251248.html
I wonder if this dopod rom makes a difference?
Different quality
I have had a HTC P3300 with TomTom Navigator 6.030.0 for 8 month and it would take between 8-30 sek. to get a signal (newer more) nomather if it was outside, in a car, or even in most houses.
I Just bought a new P3300 a few days ago.. and i had to get it switched 3 times becouse the first 2 was so terrible slow to get a signal??? - now i finally have a good one again but i´m thinking that maybe the quality from HTC is very different??
* by the way, my Quick GPS is allways updatet because it does so automaticly when i sync.
Hi there,
I recently bought my HTC P3300 few weeks ago. Considering this is my first pda with gps, i am disappointed that others are enjoying quick gps fix.
My unit takes about 2.5 to 5 mins to get a fix from cold start. A warm start within 4 hrs yields a fix within 30 secs. It gets very annoying especially when i am trying to demonstrate the gps feature to my friends..and they have to wait about 4-5 mins to see the dam thing work.
I download QuickGPS data twice a day and even tried deleting the 2 keys files it downloads and it makes no difference!!.
When i do get a fix, i usually get connected to min 5 sats and on avg get about 6 or 7 sats. So i think that proves my unit has clear line of sight without much obstructions/interferences.
In visualgps, within 30 secs it sees 3 sats. most of the time, but its the fix it that take ages.
EDIT: When ones shakes the P3300 vigorously, do you guys hear some loose piece inside the casing moving about making noise?
Should i return my device back ( although i am out of 7 days exchange period)? Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike
Btw, I use Tomtom 6.03 with B&B V3.7 cooked rom.

Hmm, so it seems I may have a bit of a duff one? I'm not sure I can get mine switched over now, it was an upgrade with T Mobile and that was weeks ago.
How do you configure the artemis to do automatic quickgps updates when synching? I was watching the quickgps screen when I connected it to my pc and nothing happened until I manually clicked download. Also, when it's connected to my pc, does quickgps download from my cable internet connection or does it use my gprs service?

Quick GPS lost after B&B v4 update (Artemis)?
My quick GPS seems to have disappeared since I uploaded the otherwise brilliant B&B ROM upgrade. Does anyone have a solution for this? I'm reluctant to flash back to O2's own ROM but is it possible to update selectively from the O2 ROM? Or can I download Quick GPS from somewhere?

OK, so I have been reading a lot on the gps capabilities of the vogue, and have seen a lot of things out there like the virser gps dll, reg-hacks, gps kick-start, quick-gps, mmeto, and different gps drivers that can all supposedly change the speed at which the gps can get a lock. on a thread over at xda tabout the quickgps one, they were able to get fixes/locks after only about 20-40 seconds! thats the kind of thing we all need...
there is definitely an awful lot of stuff about it, and i have grown pretty confused i must say. i have a sprint vogue and would REALLY like faster connection times.
if there is ANYONE who has some consolidated facts and real numbers/evidence about what (combination) works best, i would greatly apprecaite it, as im sure would many many others.
even though you may have the urge, plz do not post here for at least 1-2 days if you do not have some good evidence/clear consice instructions on how to improve gps signal quality.
thanks a lot guys!,
Jim.

i'm using the stock "leaked" ROM for 2+ days without the virser gps dll and without any of the GPS hacks. with Garmin Mobile XT using the GPS Intermediate Driver, i get locks on 7-9 satellites within 30-45 seconds when outside and within 120 seconds when inside. on the flip-side, when using iGO 2006+ with COM 4, it takes 3-6 minutes to get a satellite lock. i used my Sprint Touch to capture this pic on a "recent" west-to-east coast flight....notice the number in the lower left hand corner
I'm using a rom I cooked with the new 3.0x kitchen I cooked using ppcgeeks kitchen ... it's based on the same "leaked" rom .. just customized for me ... anyway ... I get the same kind of lock times listed above ... I use an old version of mapopolis when I travel and google maps while in town (no data connection 5 miles outside of town ... I live in the great wild west ... ya know ... lots of wide open spaces .. LOL) anyway, with google maps I get about 3-5 yards accuracy ... with mapopolis ... maybe a little better ... but always 6-9 satelites ... and no hacks ... I do use htc quick gps ... seems to help

also, is this on cold or soft boot/start of gps?

i ran into the time/date issue once with the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) when i lost the signal going into an underground parking structure. everytime i attempt to set GPS to COM 4, GM XT searches and searches and searches and seems to never connect. GM XT then defaults back to the GPSID. funny you mention the GPSID-time/date relationship: today, for the first time in 5 months, i ran into the same date/time issue today while using my Samsung BJ II. i'm inclined to believe the recent XT updates introduced this problem.
@jim256 - the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) is (as i understand it) a native WinMo 6.0 driver that included with our respective Touch devices.
Cold start times are always going to be slow. That's why the GPStoday plugin is such a valuable addition! If you haven't tried it yet, you need to take a look at it...

Hi,
I've search the forum to find my answer but with no result... Let me explain my problem:
I'm using Christians WM6.5.1 ROM (latest build). Everything works fine except TT7. I've tried several caps but none of them works perfect... The thing is that it won't recognize the build in GPS module. The app says "No GPS device!"
I allready tried to set the settings to "Another NMEA receiver" on the GPS-baudspeed of 57600 and COM:4... But it won't work...
With my TyTnII I didn't experience any problems but I'm pretty desperate to find the solution so I won't need my old Garmin Nav.System any more.
Does someone has an answer to my problem? Or maybe the same problem?
Please help!
hi.
i am also using christian's rom and i am using tomtom 7 without any problem.did you update your gpsfix data?use quick gps and update your data.if you cant get proper signal it will show 'no gps found'.once you pick up the signal it will work properly.
good luck.
Well the main problem is that the gps device that is build in the xperia x1 wil have to find the gps locations..
The first time it will take about 2 to 10 minutes before it finds the locations. After that first time it will take a few seconds to 30 seconds before it finds it's locations..
I had the same problem and it drove me crazy untill I found 2 posts on the internet that saved my life.
Just place your Xperia somewhere on a table in the garden and wait for it to load.
Greetings from Holland.
If I'm not wrong you should use the internal GPS and set the baudrate to 4800. 57600 is way too large.
Okay, I don't use Win 6.5, but also using 6.1 57600 is not working.
Hi,
I've tried your tip but without any results... TomTom tells me that there were no satalites which I was conected to but still got my location pretty pointed...
I drove the entire way on my TomTom but without GPS fix... I downloaded the newest position with QuickGPS before I ran TT7.
Could this be a bug or is it locating me on another way...?
i am using tomtom 7.915.9196.vga_black.cab without any problem.which radio version are you using?seems you are having very weird problem.good luck.
I use TTN_7.916.9189 and there are not problems
got christians rom too and tomtom 7.xx runs better than under windows 6.1 stock rom
Got it working... Don't ask how I did it Cause I really have no clue...!
But I'm really happy it finally works! Now I've got to see how I can get it into my "On The Road" panel to set it as my default navigator
also using christian's latest clean WWE rom.
it does find some satelites in tomtom 7.9xxxxxx, but still not possible to navigate or find a way.
what did you do?
i even let tomtom run till my battery got empty, but no luck?

Hi
I had the same thing. You can leave it outside in clear daylight for about 15 min as this is sometimes how long it takes to pick up the GPS after a ROM change. Also ensure that you have done the QuickGPS download beforehand.
In my case my phone was faulty from the start but after they replaced it it still took a while before it picked up the first time.

You could try HTC GPS Tool (attached). First, make sure there's nothing blocking your view from the sky; it's best to be outdoors. When you open it up, on the top-left there's a button "Open Port." Press that. Then press Menu > Satellite. This will now show you satellites near you (red). When they turn white (it might take a while), you know you are attracting a satellite. Now, without closing HTC GPS Tool, open Google Maps and hit Menu > Use GPS. It should now get your location.
I had the same issue after recently upgrading my 'stock' T-Mobile (US) TP2 to WM6.5. For me, this was resolved after a radio update. Am currently using 4.49.25.57.
check out the aGPS cab in my signature, really speeds up the lock time dramaticly, highly recommended.
Thanks for all your help! Thankyou!

Did you come right?
it seems get better but it need some more time to test!
I have a TP2 (unlocked European version, WM 6.5) and I have no problems getting a GPS signal. I always use the Quick GPS application before powering up my GPS software but when that's done I have GPS signal lock and location lock within 2-4 seconds, whether I'm using CoPilot Live 7 or Google Maps. I've also tried Navigon MN7, same thingm very fast GPS signal lock and location lock.
However, if I don't use Quick GPS it can take several minutes before I get location lock although it will find GPS signal.
All this is tested several times sitting in a moving car in both clear weather and cloudy weather. Also tested from within my apartment, although near a window.
Thanks for your suggestion but I already use quickGPS and still found the problem.
I flashed a new ROM today and the ROM only came with QuickGPS. I tried that, and I still couldn't get a lock. The only way I did get a lock was by installing the HTC GPS Tool (which I talked about in post 3) and using that app. Once I opened the GPS Com Ports, I got a lock in 20 seconds (indoors). I'm not sure if you tried it yet, but the HTC GPS Tool is really the only way I get satellite locks (with any ROM).
