TomTom5

Chaps/Ladies (do we have any?!),
I've been using TT5 for a couple of weeks now, and have a strange problem! Every now and then, randomly, TT5 will just exit whilst navigating. I drove 170 miles yesterday and it closed itself four times, the phone was off on three of the four occasions, as was wifi and BT.
I've also had it freeze once or twice. The display just stops updating, though I can still tap the screen and exit cleanly. This used to happen more frequently with TT3.
I've only run TT5 on the new 1.40 ROM.
Anyone else suffering?

Argh! Another quirk. I think I'm gonna sell my XDA2s on Ebay, and buy a map, a diary, and a Nokia 1110. :lol:

I use TT5 daily & have never had a problem with it exiting. The display occasionally freezes, butI think I can put this down to when the traffic info is being updated because it only happens occasionally & it unfreezes after about 30 seconds or so

Are you on the same ROM as us, 1.40? I don't use TomTom Traffic, so that can't be related to my problem.

My experience is that TomTom 5 will not start calculating a route without a valid GPS device attached - I'm just going to verify that though

Well that shows how much I know about TomTom 5 . It is definitely possible to generate driving instructions without a GPS device attached 8) .
Go into the "Advanced Planning" option and simply pick your start and end points. You will then have a route that you can display as text, images etc, or even "demo" the route i.e. simulate it at speeds from 10% to 500% of "real time"

I had same problem. Try to switch off showing a POI. I switch it off and TT5 works fine.

Thanks Weasel. I'll go ahead and load TomTom5 before my GPS arrives.

I have an XDA IIs with TT3, after i first installed it noticed it would crash randomly, which became really really annoying. After messing around with settings and 3rd-party software, i got nowhere. So I removed the **** O2 software that comes with the IIs, low and behold no more crashing.
Is this also the case for TT5, I would like to know before upgrading?
Don't really want to have to turn off the POI's to make it work.

This is all pretty interesting. I'm running a 1.40 O2 ROM and TomTom is not-as-stable-as-it-could-be. I'm going to do some more qualitative analysis to try and work out which of the crappy O2 software is the culprit - or if it's TomTom itself.
We've got quite a few XDAIIs here and both of the ones with TomTom are flakey. More details to follow...
[edit] Should have said - this is TomTom Navigator 5, with both bluetooth and wired GPS receivers.

AFAIK, the O2 Active software produces a memory leak. There are suggestions that TTN5 also produces a memory leak on 640x480 VGA devices. Perhaps the two are interacting? (Yes I know the XDA2s isn't VGA). Try monitoring available RAM while TTN5 is running. If it constantly reduces it will reach a point where the s/w crashes.

Anyone know a solution to this problem? Apparently we need to use the POI.dat file from earlier installations, i.e. 4 or 3 and it will only crash 1% of the time. Until there is a patch for this we will have to settle for this solution it seems.
BTW, does anyone happen to have the POI.dat file for the Benelux map, version 3 or 4? I seem to have "misplaced" my cd with the map on it, anyone can help a brutha out? PM me?

I've switched off POI ( that's NP for dutch users ) so it's stable now.

hi can any one tell me which port the gps is on ,,i removed tom tom BC it dosen't have maps for the place im in ,,i want to use navigon 5 but when i put auto detect it can't fine it i tryed manul,, but didnt work,, any help plzzz...thx

GPS port is set to COM4 by default.

I can get iGuidance 3.0 to recognize it on COM 4 with the automatic GPS management turned on... HOWEVER, the GPS positions are not recieved and it cannot get a fix.
Tom Tom works okay, but I'd rather use iGuidance.

Adam, when in TT tap the sat strength meter, when the unit is displaying the sat strength/ status page is it giving the individual sat numbers and signal strength? I apreciate this app is working I just want an answer to that question before trying the next idea - Mike

Yes, the GPS Status page in the included TomTom software does show the sat numbers/signal strength in addition to their relative location.
When starting TomTom at first it says "No GPS detected" then after a couple seconds it says "Waiting for a valid GPS signal.." I'm not sure if that means there's something hard coded into this TomTom versions that actually turns the GPS receiver on.
What's your next idea?

“The page you are looking for cannot be found due to unknown error 0x80072f78.”
Anyone have any idea why this would be happening? I love this device outside of this issue.

That happened to me with the New York maps, but then I tried again an hour or so later, and it worked.

i'm using 4 programs navigon5,gps dash, navio,vito navigator, astro navigator, and all on COM4 and all work fine based on the above configration,,,

I wish I could get it to work; I've tried countless times in the past 48 hours with no luck when choosing any state in the US. Same error message.
I am running Navigon 5 with success, but the app is slow overall. Anyone get Mapopolis to run on this device? I tried yesterday with COM 4; it was trying hard to get a fix, but it wouldn't go for me with the latest version.

I've tried the TomTom software and it works well with this device. Microsoft pocket streets worked, but didnt seem to work well. Going to try Iguidance and see if that is any good.

Has anyone gotten this to work with Iguidance 3.0, for some reason iguidance will not work with the artemis gps. If you have it working, what did you have to do to get it to work?

I had a O2 orbit xba and I loaded the Navigator 5 but having problem detecting GPS receiver...can anyone help?? I set the GPS to COM4 but still cannot work. What is the setting for GPS for Navigator 5?

I know on my HTC P3300, I have troubles getting a signal so I am came to the conclusion that I am going to need an external antenna because the built in one isn't that great.

The solution to this program is as follows:
Run regedit in your HOST computer and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services, Add a DWORD setting "AllowLSP" with value set to 0

You have to be connected to internet before you start TT and download free maps... fastest way is thru WiFi. You can also use activesync to get connected to internet.

GPS Aides/Reg Hacks/Utilities/"Fast Fixers"

OK, so I have been reading a lot on the gps capabilities of the vogue, and have seen a lot of things out there like the virser gps dll, reg-hacks, gps kick-start, quick-gps, mmeto, and different gps drivers that can all supposedly change the speed at which the gps can get a lock. on a thread over at xda tabout the quickgps one, they were able to get fixes/locks after only about 20-40 seconds! thats the kind of thing we all need...
there is definitely an awful lot of stuff about it, and i have grown pretty confused i must say. i have a sprint vogue and would REALLY like faster connection times.
if there is ANYONE who has some consolidated facts and real numbers/evidence about what (combination) works best, i would greatly apprecaite it, as im sure would many many others.
even though you may have the urge, plz do not post here for at least 1-2 days if you do not have some good evidence/clear consice instructions on how to improve gps signal quality.

i'm using the stock "leaked" ROM for 2+ days without the virser gps dll and without any of the GPS hacks. with Garmin Mobile XT using the GPS Intermediate Driver, i get locks on 7-9 satellites within 30-45 seconds when outside and within 120 seconds when inside. on the flip-side, when using iGO 2006+ with COM 4, it takes 3-6 minutes to get a satellite lock. i used my Sprint Touch to capture this pic on a "recent" west-to-east coast flight....notice the number in the lower left hand corner

I'm using a rom I cooked with the new 3.0x kitchen I cooked using ppcgeeks kitchen ... it's based on the same "leaked" rom .. just customized for me ... anyway ... I get the same kind of lock times listed above ... I use an old version of mapopolis when I travel and google maps while in town (no data connection 5 miles outside of town ... I live in the great wild west ... ya know ... lots of wide open spaces .. LOL) anyway, with google maps I get about 3-5 yards accuracy ... with mapopolis ... maybe a little better ... but always 6-9 satelites ... and no hacks ... I do use htc quick gps ... seems to help

hmm ok thanks a lot for your detailed response. care to attach/point me to the "GPS Intermediate Driver"? so i can see if that might help out my situation, because i am certainly not getting anything like 7-9 locks within 45 seconds.
also, is this on cold or soft boot/start of gps?

hmm ok right i see. thanks. i recently cooked a rom (which i have done plenty of times) but with the newest ppckitchen.org kitchen for the vogue, and it is SOOOO SLOW so im not sure if thats what im going to keep using.

When you use Garmin on the GPS Intermediate Driver, don't you get the time/date reset problem? The only time I don't get that problem is when I have it set to COM4. Its really annoying lol.

i ran into the time/date issue once with the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) when i lost the signal going into an underground parking structure. everytime i attempt to set GPS to COM 4, GM XT searches and searches and searches and seems to never connect. GM XT then defaults back to the GPSID. funny you mention the GPSID-time/date relationship: today, for the first time in 5 months, i ran into the same date/time issue today while using my Samsung BJ II. i'm inclined to believe the recent XT updates introduced this problem.
@jim256 - the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) is (as i understand it) a native WinMo 6.0 driver that included with our respective Touch devices.

Cold start times are always going to be slow. That's why the GPStoday plugin is such a valuable addition! If you haven't tried it yet, you need to take a look at it...

Run the updater and get the Vogue 3.0x Kitchen ... I cooked a ROM that is smokin fast ... gps works great ... I put dcd's uc module in the user section ... all in all it's the best rom I've had ...
Now if only the Vogue had a flash ... would truely love to have a flashlight in my phone ... hehehehe

ya i had it all updated, and was of course using the 3.x kitchen. but i tried it again and all seems well now. either i put something bad in, or didnt hard reset after flashing. but o well im good to go now

Orange touch HD + tomtom= no GPS device?

Hi,
I signed up a touch HD with orange UK yesterday. The first thing I did was to install TOMTOM on the machine. However, TOMTOM kept reporting no GPS device. If it finds the internal GPS receiver, then it is 20 minutes later. One thing I notice is that when TOMTOM is looking for the GPS receiver, there is something trying to connect to the internet.
I am sure I did everthing right as I was using this copy of tomtom on the touch diamond and it worked like a treat.
Did orange do anything to the GPS so people can only use their stupid orange map? If they did, is there any way that I can get the tomtom working?

Thank you for all your advice and the problem has been solved. Here are a few tips for people who have the same problem.
1. A-GPS can only make things worse, switch it off.
2. Update your quick-GPS data.
3. It seems that tomtom struggles to find GPS device on certain orange handset. If you are the unlucky one, try change your hand set with orange. If you don’t want to go through the trouble, open google map to locate satellite before open tomtom.
4. Debrand the handset.
5. Orange’s customer service is crap, stay away if you can

Have you tried updating QuickGPS in the programmes.
Also check A-GPS is disabled in windows settings.

Thanks, I have updated the quickGPS the first thing. I have the a-gps enabled, though it could help to locate the satallite.

I think it is recomended to be disabled.
Perhaps try it if you have not.

GPS always worked fine for me with the stock Orange ROM, that was with 1.14 though, I think they come with 1.19 now, it also works fine with all of the cooked ROMs I've tested. Perhaps the version of TomTom you have isn't fully compatible with the HD (I did notice you said it worked on the Diamond, but perhaps there's a hardware/software difference on the HD which stops it working.

I am happily have 3 navigation programs on my HD, Tomtom, iGO, Navigon
but I always prefer iGO

By the way, UK orange's customer service is what I call crap. I called them about the GPS last night and a idiot tell me that as far as I can make phone calls, my phone is fine.

Don’t blame them, that is way we are here.
My tomtom version is 7.915.9196, with latest UK and Ireland map v830.2307
but unfortunately it doesn’t support 7 point postcode system just accept 4 digit post code and in order to find the address you actually need to know name of the street as well. But I have iGO with 7PPC which it is fantastic.

830.207 works just fine with 7 digit postcodes, as have all maps for the last couple of years.

ok now for everyone which already had tomtom without 7 digit postcode, do as I listed here:
01- Downloaded the file
www.tomtom.com/updates/great_britainpostal_all.zip
02- copy it into new folder (folder's name doesn't matter)
03- extract it.
04- click on setup.exe
05- choose "i agree" then click next.
06- choose Pocket PC (Windows CE)
07- choose install Tom Tom Great Britin Postcode then click next.
08- choose other location (Advanced)
09- choose Folder on the computer
10- select any folder you want
the software will generate a zip folder
after getting the zip folder move it to your SD card's Root
start TOM TOM you will be able to do a full 7 digit postcode search.

I often get the 'GPS device not found' error on my Orange HD also. A quick fix I've found is to run Google Maps first and lock onto a GPS signal in there, before opening TomTom. Seems to 'solve' the problem for now...

it shouldn't be like that, when I had Stock ROM on my HD I used to had similar problem beside long waiting time before tomtom finds signal (about 15 ~ 20s) but after flashing HD with Custom ROM every problem is gone, now it finds signal in less than 5 second

Exactly what I was going to say.. I had the same problem with mine running 7.9something. If you run google maps in the backgroungd it almost jump started the gps. I have also found that once you get a gps signal it seems to keep it easier..... dunno if thats just hopeful. Oh yes and I am on Orange too stock rom.

GPS problems in Europe

I live in China and I was using garmin XT, which works pretty good.
now I'm in Europe with the right maps, but I can't get signal, normally I can see even more than 3 satellites but never get more than the 2 red bars in the signal indicator of Garmin, any idea? maybe some settings I need to check?.
I wrote them but I think is going to be faster here hehe, and I will be in Europe only 3 more days.

I am having the same issue with Garmin XT. I live in Norway and here i only get 3 satellites and no red bars.
Is this a issue with Garmin XT or my phone (Blackstone) not communicating correct with Garmin.
And, i have the quick gps updated.

you must check your time zone, if its incorrect gps wont work!
check it in windows setting and gps software setting. you must are configured in the same time zone that the country you are.
One day that problem append to me without travel. i was in paris and the winmo bug of time zone changing append, and my igo was down 2or3 satellites in view same you. After 3 day of searching i have checked time zone and it was wrong.
In iGo it was a setting for time zone in the Regional setting page be carreful of it if it wrong GPS wont work.

thanks, I check it, and well, the time zone was OK, but not the place, I corrected it but nothing change, Garmin find the satellites really fast, but normally 3 some times 4 but is not enough still shows me 2 red bars in the signal indicator.
any other idea? please!!, becasue if is a hardware problem, I will need to change my phone, but I bought it in China and in China works, then they are not going to replace it!.

I had similar problem going from Italy to Canary island and using IGO8. The fix appened, more or less casually, using Google maps : I got the position and the map. Then, when I tried again with Igo8, after a short time, i got a fix. Bye
