NFSFAN's 1.0 WM6.5 ROM observations - Touch CDMA Windows Mobile ROM Development

I am going to first start off by saying that I'm not a big fan of change and haven't found myself a reason to upgrade to 6.5.1+ yet. So bear with me, as I'm still using 21864 on NFSFAN's 1.0 ROM. I have noticed various things with this ROM build, was wondering if anyone had also noticed them, or even found a solution for them.
The first thing I noticed with it is that if I have a data connection open, it is always 'active' - the arrows never turn gray. I've seen this happen in BOTH of NFSFAN's dialers.
I would assume this problem has to do with the first-- My data connection is interrupted after some time, and I get the "Cannot Connect" error. I have MS Direct Push (Exchange/Activesync) turned on. A simple soft-reset will temporarily fix this, but it seems to happen about twice a day.
Of course next, the alarms don't sound but I'm not worried about this since it's a well-known problem.
The last thing I noticed is that sometimes my D-Pad stops functioning in the software, and touch-scrolling lags. This only happens sometimes and doesn't bother me. I first noticed this when I had Palringo installed, but it also has been doing it after 3-4 hard resets.
EDIT: This is by far the best 6.5 ROM for the Vogue that I have personally used. I also realize that NFSFAN has stopped development with this ROM series.

i don't think nfsfan has stopped developing them... i just think he has no time. (he's a full time uni student) and this is his hobby
i personally use vin's rom... and i was always able to have a data connection stop.

sorry for the double post. but here it is.

I was a long time NFSFAN user and will no doubt flash his next ROM, but right now I am running Vin's 23506 ROM and it is simply the best ROM I have flashed. It is very fast and I never have to soft reset, like ever.

+1 too his Vogue rom was really stable, fast, and with enough features. Right now, I am testing mine, but his is one of the best (no offense to vin, your rom rocks too man!)

I used to use NFSFans, then i switched to Vins.
Couldn't be happier now with Vins, their stable, fast an usually liveable which is the big part, no way could go back to vanilla 6.1.
I agree NFSfans were good, but felt it up an down, where as following Vins till his kitchen crashed has been steady and in touch with his followers.
So, yeah theres little twitches an glitches, lot less then stock WM had so its a win-win, and i found the best continuity on Vins roms for my three vogues.
Sorry o/t an not knocking anyone, just credit where due.
Peace
WR

I have used both of these ROMs and finally decided on Vins(no offense to NFSfan, he is a genius), but the stability and look of Vins V_4 is simply amazing.
I'm pretty new to flashing ROMs, but I'm officially addicted and will for sure try anything that either put out.
Keep up the great work

Thanks for the feedback, guys! I think I do remember trying one of vins older ROMs but I'll catch the latest and try that.

Vin- Much impressed with V4!! Best I've used yet. Just installed no2chem's mass storage, works great.

I've tried many ROMS on my 8525 and they all worked pretty well. Each had their advantages and disadvantages. I want a ROM that has a lot of memory, very stable, and works great with voice command. So if you can just drop by and recommend one. No need to flame or say something about the thread--if you don't like it, don't answer in it. I just want recommendations, thanks.
How many WM6.1 roms can we possibly create!?

I completely agree! In the past I tried several, but ultimately stuck with the Schaps roms. I felt they were the best for me- had what I waned, were fast and stable. Now in this last month with WM6.1, there are so many, and they're all apparently the latest and the greatest. It's confusing too that every cook uses their own revision numbering system also.
I'm using Pays latest rom right now. It's what it claims to be (for me), fast and stable. Will continue with that until Schaps (hopefully soon) releases his final 4.40...
It seems everyone is working very hard to get their own perfect rom happening- but wouldn't it be better if we got more collaboration going between cooks, and worked together to create fewer, better roms? It would probably mean spending less time reinventing the wheel...
Just my thoughts- take them or leave them.
no matter what ROM I go to recently, I end up going straight back to this one
I just downloaded the Voice Command file that was on here and im sure you will find it if you use the search function.
It is fast and has alot of storage memory and in my opinion is the most stable ROM i have put on my hermes.
Everyone is different tho...
I use Pandora Naked 7.0b2, the last WM6 Naked rom before mattk_r moved on to WM6.1. It's very fast, very stable and comes with nothing extraneous.

I have to agree. I tried all the 6.1's as they were coming out and within a few hours had hard resets. Kept coming back to Berds rom (linked above).
Like Schap rom so much ...... so waiting for full release of Schap's WM6.1
Thank you guys for the input. I'm using Faria's 6.1 ROM. GREAT rom--very stable. Just two things with it though: there's a memory leak somewhere and voice command doesn't work well at all. So i'll see what ROM to flash. I also wanted a lite rom, but it never came out. Might try schap's 6.1 rom when it comes out.
Have you tried Matt's Pandora Naked Roms? They are clean/stable. I've been using his PN7.2 for awhile with VC & no issues. I haven't tried his 9.1 yet (wm6.1). I'm waiting for all the bugs to get worked out.
Chris
No flame, just a lot of opinion... Regardless of what anyone says, if you are looking for stability, speed, memory, etc... then you may want to stay with a WM6.0 rom... Although I have run and am currently running a WM6.1 variant, I would suggest to anyone that either doesn't have the time to flash repeatedly or isn't afflicted with RFWS to stay away from the 6.1 Roms for now...
How much time is actually spent on a rom to consider it stable...? What are the measurements that are taken to consider a rom fast and speedy...? I am not taking anything away from the cooks and wish I had the grey matter to cook roms myself, BUT unless a rom is tested over a period of time (not two weeks) and repeatedly subjected to beta testing how can one say it is stable... We constantly have roms that are released and then we become the Beta Testers (not complaining mind you, its what I live for)... But we do need to remember that this is primarily a development site and as such there will always be releases that some of us consider to be substandard or less than average... There are several factors that determine stability and how often one has to perform soft/hard resets is one of those factors...
Well, let me get off of the soapbox, I personally liked the Black Series of Roms that are no longer under development... And since they are not supported by the cook any longer (for personal reasons), I would recommend Schaps 4.x series of roms... not the WM6.1 variants, but the WM6.0 variants...
Hope this helps...

I think Schaps v4.01 is very stable. It can use MS VC very effectively plus it is not hifi version compared to the current ROMs. Just the basic necessary things which are required for a good ROM. I have used both his lite and full version. You can try it out.
The ROM thread is situated here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343942.
I have tried many kinds of different softwares also on this ROM which works pretty well and as desired. You can try it out.
Great to know. I've tried schaps rom actually and liked it but for some reason that i can't remember, i went to faria's. I think i might go back to this one now. Are there any highly anticipated roms coming up like dutty's 6.1 for the kaiser when everybody was talking about it before it came out?
I tried Schaps and just like last time, it freezes up a lot on me for some reason. Things don't go very smooth on it so i might try pay's rom or some other that i find stable. Any further recommendations will be highly accepted.
I was a great fan of Schaps roms but I kept having connectivity issues (ie: bluetooth, wi-fi) so i switched over to TNT roms. Love those. But it all depends on what you're looking for. For example, TNT roms have a lot of 3rd part apps that some people might not want. I personally haven't had any luck with voice command. Not even with the at&t rom. You gotta do your research. Check thru the first few pages of a rom thread that looks appealing to you and see what the immediate problems are and post your concerns/questions. Members here will be more than happy to help you. After all, that's what development is...isn't it?
Guys, I have gone done the same path as so many of you - trying each ROM as it came out. Before 6.1, I was stuck on TNT SE after being a major fan of Schaps for a long while. Now with 6.1, I have found CRC's to be the best. I dont use VC so cant comment.. Randomize is good, but no BT Explorer... have been operating with CRC for a few weeks now. Very rarely have to reset - only if I overload the thing and it locks up at 99% memory utilisation. Try it for yourself... The only comment I have beyond that is related to radio ROM. I have found that 6.1 seems to be more sensitive to which Radio Rom you are using. I have gone back to 1.43 and found it to be superior to 1.54! Be warned though, I have read in some of the other threads that an older radio ROM can cause the phone to freeze up, although I haven't experianced that at all.
RanDomIze Final Storm v2.10
I have tried almost every 6.1 ROM, this on definatly is the best one I have found.

Best / Reliable 6.1 Roms

Hello, I see a handful on 6.1 Roms in here. Short of loading each one of them. Which is more reliable or keeps on top of updates if needed?
Im Currently using the MRH. And I Dont know much kinda new in a way to upgrading my phone. But It just seems like there is alot missing with this rom.

u have to load each because each user here may have a different experience with each because for me one rom maybe perfect next person may crash left and right and so on so only way to know is trying each like i like pvh 19400 although am now trying pvh19900
To a fellow OK State alumn, I have tested at least a dozen different 6.1 ROMS and this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376223
has been the cleanest, fastest, and most stable one for me. Just add the applications you want.
Much thanks! Yea thats the one i was toying around with. There are so many apps out there. I dont know where to start. and which ones would tailor towards my use.
i downloaded and tried them all,
Quite happy with the one ive got now, many have loads of apps but you start to loose available RAM when that happens.
best just to try a few and see which one best suits what you want to do, suggestion though is to keep your PIM and other things backed up incase you need to do a hard reset in the event of a freeze
Just keep on this forum as often as you can. It took me months to find out what I wanted and what worked. Just be patient and play around. It is more of a hobby to me than anything.
less questions and read read read the thread posts!! try a few with features u like! all the cooks have great roms if u know how to use them....
Best ROM
I have install and test almost all the WM 6.1 ROMS.
Like the other guys say you really have to test out a ROM as you might like some features over others.
In my time i have found the following:
TNT ROM WM6.1 to be the best all rounder - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376945
Only thing i don't like about it is the startup speed. Every with the animation disabled and the network auto config it still makes a good long while.
Blinky ROM WM 6.1 Super fast and really cool - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=383751
My favourite ROM so far but does not come with many applications
im using pays rom 6.1, use it for a month now. stable and quite fast

Its what I have and his review is spot on. Its very fast, probably the fastest I have ever used and incredibly fast startup time. It was missing many of the programs I like but thankfully I already had them on my storage card from playing with a Schaps Lite ROM a while back. I think my last changes will be a flashlight software like vjcandela and something better for BT transfers but all in all this is a great ROM and will definitely keep me happy until the next Schaps is released.
I like PDAViet build 19900... It is SOOOOOOOOO fast and had a remarkable 28Mb of ram left after installing it with almost 70Mb storage memory. Now down to about 25MB ram and 45Mb storage as I've put a heap of 3rd party apps on...Cheers...
the last Binky 6.1 WM 3.5 is a great slim one and you have the possibility to install your own apps after flashing
but guys, I can't beam files using the f***ing IR port... anyidea about it?

Poll: Which WM 6.1 ROM?

Just a quick poll for my own curiosity if nothing else, which WM 6.1 ROM are you using?
If not one of the above, please add a post explaining which.
Also, are there are any newer benchmarks available than those shown here?
You forgot "Binky11's ROM". Best I have used so far.
We seem to be getting a few 'others', but no indication which they are?
I'm currently using Faria's/Dr. Puttingham's ROM but it seems a little unstable, as the OS freezes on me forcing me to pull the battery to reset. I installed it yesterday, with 2 freezes already. I think I'm going to try another one. I use an 8525 btw.
-PB
PDACorner's ROM's have been the cleanest and most stable for me. He is always using the latest builds. I am currently using V.14. build 20226.
Personally I stay away from super storage ROMS. I don't have a need for them, and maybe by sheer coincidence I've only had 1 hard-reset for all the ROMs I've tried, whereas it seems like other folks were having them more often.
I've been a fan of the pdaviet ROMs, but lately have been happy with CRCs... not sure if you need to break out his dev ROMs from stable, since one is just a progression to another.
Stable, with good available program memory.
I used schaps 4 for ages, but I find myself more and more taking a simple "no options" rom (like the PDACorner rom) and adding the dialer, interface, and applications that I really want, instead of using some rom someone else builds.
So I guess you could say I use PDACorner with LOTS of mods.
CRC's 11.2 and 12.2 is the same
Basically re numbered. I too have issues with BS ROMs, my device seems not to agree with it! I would love to try again in the near future, but I use my device for business and can not afford hard resets at all. I go with CRC's ROM for weeks with the only need to power off and on again with side button every other week.
I don't know why but I can't seem to find others that would not hard reset on me, yet.
I have been using Alex's v5.att.161.home ROM for months now, and I love it.

i think the "others" are older WM 6.0 ROMs. im still using sleuth 3.1 from 7/5/07! =P. it's a PITA to backup data then upgrade, then resync data.
but i'm looking forward to upgrading soon, i think wm6.1 improves performance+stability yes?

Dvha79_ddt
Its always updated with the latest build. Its clean and stable. Suits my taste.
for what it's worth see my signature...
I have tried at some point just about every 6.1 rom I can find on this forum.
The PDAcorner v16 seemed good, and VERY fast, but I didnt like the UI or the idea of how long it would take me to get it how I like it.
I LOVE CRC's roms, they are clean, stable, and fast. Using 12.2 atm! with a 8meg page pool, dam fast!
For those who speak of the "latest build" ala PDA Viet and PDA corner...is there actually a noticeable difference when u flash to a later build ROM? I love flashing a new ROM but it takes me such a long time to get it tweaked to how i like it, so i don't do it so much and then when you consider that you can try the same ROM with so many Pagepool settings, sigh....i could be spending HOURS testing ROMS and just don't have the time to play with them all and at diff settings. That is why I am VERY glad for a thread like this, cause it seems to be frowned upon to compare the ROMS on this site (or mainly to ask the oppinion for a ROM)...i don't exactly understand that, why not discuss and compare them?
what i am wondering, are the latest builds considered to always be the best? i feel like there are so many factors (including unknown ones) that attribute to a ROM being a good working ROM.
for those who have tried lots of the PDAVIET ROMS, any thoughts on which is/are the best?
I can't pick one of the ROMS on the list, but i will say this, i've been on WM6.1 for a while and am considering trying 6.0 again to get a new frame of reference to tell if one is indeed better than the other for me
Shamanix`s WM6 Ultimate v2 FINAL [SuperStorage] With add on's
I'm using CRC12.3 at the moment, but I'm not all that rapt in it.
PDV has had some good ones. Does a nice clean install and removes rubbish that other ROMs leave behind. Got rid of a bug that had plagued me for months.
PDACorner has had some good ones.
Randomize had the best package that needed the least customising by me.
I guess I'm just a ROM junkie.
Been thinking of upgrading to a Samsung i900, but then I'd miss all this fun.

You can use UC/sdconfig.txt to re-install all your favourite programs that run from internal RAM. Most of the stuff I want to add back in runs off my SD card. I just keep the cabs in a separate folder on my SD card and work through them. Only takes a few minutes.
Biggest hassle I had was with contacts and email settings.
But PIMBackup restores contacts in a flash, and Settings Savior restores all my email accounts (about 4 or 5).
Now I can re-flash and be back in operation in under 30 minutes.

Fastest most stable rom?

Hi guys, I'll be using a Hermes for a few months until my contract comes up for renewal but having had an iphone and an HTC Advantage for the last year or so I've been a bit spoilt in the memory/mhz department and now using the Hermes is like pulling teeth.
I didn't play with the standard rom long enough to know if I liked it, just dived straight in here, trying out some XDA-dev Roms. I've now tried manilla2D V8 and starbase's touchflo2d and although they look fantastic they seem painfully slow and riddled with bugs. This is not an attack on the authors of those roms, as I said they look fantastic and are hugely functional. I just need one ALOT quicker and without the bugs.
Any recommendations?

Their are limitations as you are aware with the hermes so any rom running hermes rom running touchflo2d will leave you with at or around 20megs of ram. all of the chefs have put out great roms so my suggestion would be to try ones with tf2d cooked in. performance and bugs are non existent in most of them or easily fixable. Good luck.
If you want a fast ROM, don't flash one with manilla or touchflow. They will bog you down. Try one of the lite ROMs out there from Joshkosh or Abusalza's PDA ROMs.

Best rom...
I was using crc's rom's clean design lots of usablity but i constantly had sync problems so tried Dvha79_ddt Rom's and they are all very good i am using V22 5.2.20748 Black basic NoBS and its is excelent.
I'm also using DVH v22 NoBS for months now (usually I flash around every other week) and it seems to be very fast and stable. If you're content with WM standard today screen (no fancy home plugins) I'd suggest go w/ it to conserve resources.
I tend to find most roms strt to get buggy the more 3rd party apps installed. It seems to need experimentation to get it just right but every ROM is different and will, eventually, go down if you're adventurous and keep putting more and more 3rd party apps on.
Cheers...

I'm also using this rom but I have a problem: when I press the side Power Button to turn off the device ( in stand by), any other press of another hardware button opens up the device, and this didn't happened previously (in wm6 rom). For example, even though the device is turned off by short pressing the power button, if I accidentally press the IE button, or the camera button, the device wakes up and opens these apps. What's the solution, any registry tweak to do?
Settings>Key Lock
so, what's the verdict?
I'm new to Hermes (still using Excalibur most of the time). With so many roms and so many suggestions, have you narrowed down to THE fastest and most stable rom yet, Dannyboy? thanks!
Well after trying 3 or 4 different roms before I started this thread and a couple after it I finally settled on PDAViet DVH_V27. It was without doubt the fastest and most bug free but did lack any frills at all. I added HTC home and my usual list of cab files without any problems or slow down.
However..... as usual after a few weeks I now find myself itching for something new so I'm now on here searching for a new one to try

Thank you for the info! Do you know how much free memory you usually have? I am thinking about running TomTom navigation software, but wonder if I will have enough RAM to do that. Thanks, again!
Faria 32 - winner
This ROM wins (hands down for me). I have tried at least 6 ROMs recently and really wanted one of the manilla 2D roms to be good enough to stay the distance. I just didn't find them stable enough. PhamQuang attemp is oh so close.
I finally got round to flashing Faria32 - No frills looks wise - but a great clean ROM that hasn't yet thrown up anything significant. For now I'm sticking with this.
Still waiting for the next best touchflow batch.
Fastest Rom!!!
TNT 5.2.19199 build 19199.1.0.0
SK tools 211 score!!!!!
here we go again, each one of us uses our hermes differently, there is no such a thing as 'the fastest', 'the best' bla bla bla rom.
You need to try each one and load the software you want and see if it is fast. For me I have found that ROM.
I agree with Zocster. Everyone's different and everyone uses their device differently. I personally (for everyday use at least, I love testing other ROMS) have settled on CRC's latest stable ROMS.
I use a mac w/ missing sync and haven't had any sync problems. I also have an xp box I use as a tech machine and though I don't really depend on it for syncing, I've tried it a few times and not had any problems.
Anyways, other than benching them all in the exact same conditions, it's pretty much impossible to pin down which is THE fastest, which is THE most stable.
The cooks and testers already dedicate countless hours/days attempting this with just one ROM and even that is often too time consuming and sometimes overwhelming. I don't think any of us really has the time to even try a task so daunting, besides, HW and network conditions vary so greatly that who knows how useful it would even be.
As mentioned, general rules apply, the less frills, the lite/naked/NON-BS ROMS are generally the fastest and most stable. As far as your personal preferences go, you've just gotta rely on other people's recommendations and your own experience testing and trying until you find one that works for you.
There have been plenty of good recommendations already, and as I said, I find CRC's latest stable ROMS to do the job for me, but I am always looking and trying new ones that look good.
So, if you really can't find one that works for you, either take up kareem4nba up on his offer and ask him to build one for you, or do some reading, research, download a kitchen, and start cooking.
But, as I said, generally fast and stable are more synonymous with the lite, naked, and non-BS, 'function before form,' "clean" ROMS.
But I digress and agree with zocster, there is no such thing as "the best," "the fastest," or "the most stable" ROM, there are so many uncontrollable variables and is judged based on so many subjective factors that there aren't and really can't be any "true" answer to this question for the ages.
This all doesn't even factor in the fact that there are constantly new ROMs, new cooks, new programs, new advances, the scene is always changing. So, even if you could pin down the "best ROM right now, but who knows what'll happen tomorrow or next week.
All in all, it's an impossible question to answer. All you can do is to use the process of elimination based on other people's opinions and your own experience. Sorry. Good luck. Happy flashing!
I actually don't mind seeing one of the threads pop up every now again...
Anyway it's all been said though I would add that Speed and Stability are not always mutual inclusive.
I find:
KareemNBA's and JoshKoss's to be the fastest.
PDACornerv25/ DVH Good Speed/Stability
Crc's Most Stable

NFSFAN Vs NagROM

Hey,
I've just realized NFSFAN and NagROM are to different ROMs. My phone is currently on NFSFAN v16. Can someone advise which one is better for each carrier or differences between them?
BTW thanks a lot to NFSFAN, Nagrom Nniuq and everyone else for their effort/support on getting us a wm6.5 solution for our Vogue
Even though this has been discussed repeatedly....
NFS's ROM's are of the more stable variety, using tried and true Windows 6.5 builds. In addition he cooks in a long list of useful apps, tweaks, ports and theme. His next release(V17) will be his last Windows 6.5 release, when he will move onto 6.5.1 beta releases.
NagROM is coming from a different direction, his goal is to build ROM's with the newest hottest leaked 6.5.1 ROM's. His ROM's are going to need a lot more tweaking and problem solving than NFSFAN's polished 6.5 releases. From what I have gathered NagROM makes quality ROM's, but you have to be willing work around the large changes Microsoft is making with every new release. That is to say with every new release there seems to be an issue that you have to work around. Lastly NagROM's ROM's are made in a true barebones version and a slightly modified version with a few core apps added along with the new Touch Flo interface.
I have been running NFSFAN ROM's with very few issues for a while now. I have also been eagerly keeping tabs on NagROM's builds waiting for Microsoft to make a 6.5.1 build that is polished enough for me to use daily(although there are plenty of people who do use those ROM's daily).
The carrier and ROM's have nothing to do with each other, you don't have to pick which ROM by the carrier, all are fully supported.

well said, basically if you want the very latest build Nag is the way to go, if you can settle for an older but more stable build then NFS.
I go back and forth between both of their roms, and you cant go wrong with either one really.
NFSFAN without a glimpse of a doubt
nfsfan because it seems to do everything i need and then some, on top of that its a definite stable ROM, being im not real good with phones i dont wanna have to worry bout random issues popping up, and anything that ever happens with his ROM is usually addressed within a day or 2 and its very minor
I had NFSfans and it's solid. For some reason my phone doesn't like it. It would randomly lock me out of the phone. The old Windows Mobile Lock screen would come up and when I tried to enter my Password it would not register the button presses. So the only way out was to Take the battery out or soft reset. Both options would hard reset the phone including the memory card if I left it in. (Yes I tried flashing back to Stock about 5 times, hard reset in the new ROM a few times and YES IT REALLY DID CLEAR THE MEM CARD)
Also I thought my company changed something in their server because I could'nt get Outlook exchange to work. Turns out the ROM was the issue. I've switched to Nagrom because I was tired of the random lock-ups. I wasn't expecting Outlook to work because like I said I thought it was my company. Well with Nagrom Outlook Exhchange works just as well as it did in WM6.1. NFSFans Rom is more pretty but in my current experience NAGROM seems the most stable.

The instructions for Flashing one of NFSFAN's custom ROMS from the Chef himself:
1. Flash from BOOTLOADER mode only, let all customizations run.
2. Hard reset, let all customizations run.
There are users who suggest the "triple flash technique", In another forum NFSFAN himself suggested to a user to flash back to stock first, I think it started from there.
Question is......did you at least follow the chef's instructions?
The only tiime I have ever experienced a random hard reset with a ROM from NFSFAN is when I purposely flashed from active sync and did not hard reset after. One single improper flash. I was able to replicate most of the problems alot of users were reporting......and worse after the self hard reset. My exchange wouldn't sync contacts was one of them.
Following the above procedure (once again.....NFSFAN recommends bootloader mode himself) I have NEVER had a random hard reset, and my exchange works perfect. There was one 6.1 ROM version that had exchange issues (a beta build), but NFSFAN resolved it and I've never seen those problems since.
I can't remember the technical reason NFSFAN gave once for bootloader mode. BUT, it is his own kitchen and his ROM, therefor when he gives instruvtions on hoe to install it I do just that.
Please don't take this as a rant or anything personal. I would be interestred to hear if you flashed according to NFSFAN's instructions, and if not if you tried again and tested your exchange etc.
Cheers and happy flashing (With NFSFAN, VIN, NAG etc we have lots of that to do!!!)
were you really that bored?
right now am using NagROM because of 6.5.1 i llikkee it

It's a problem with the Windows Default Lock. Change to Windows Classic. Been a week without issues and mine was locking every day or 2.
