I am thinking of switching to this phone. I will be comming from a palm centro. My question is do I have to use outlook to sync? I have vista 64 but dont have outlook. Is there a program (non web based) like palm desktop I could use to sync?
Thanks in advance
Dug13
P.S. I allready love this forum and dont even have the phone yet.
Welcome, dug13.
I think this question has already been asked, but never mind. I have tried it myself, I wanted some software that could run on Linux. Have a look at:
1. Finchsync. I managed to sync my Universal with Thunderbird and Lightning (both on Win XP), but thats been some time ago. Don't know if this still exists.
2. Funambol. Is a server of its own, managed to sync with Evolution (Linux), but I read a few reports about sync only working one way/only sometimes etc.
I ended up without sync, I use PIMbackup for... well, backup! and have my phone contacts on my device and my mail contacts on my laptop. Hard times for Linux users...
My 2ct, Gby.
hmmm
Thanks for the quick reply.I dont have or know anything about linux but thank you for the refrences. I dont want to spend the money for outlook so i guess no deals. I thought i heard u could use windows live?
I just want to sync the cal. contacts, memos or notes ect.
Vista 64 does not come with Outlook Express?
I think it's a free download from Windows Live, on Windows 7 a lot of stuff is missing and you get it free from Windows Live.
Outlook has never been needed to synch.
Now if you wanted to synch email you can just use gmail or similar and not need to synch e-mail.(it allready set up on phone just enterd user pass on mine Ta-Daa!)

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could help confirm something for me. I've been toying with the idea of trying one of these mouth-watering WM6 ROMs, but I don't think my current situation will permit it.
At home I sync to a WinXP SP2 machine running ActiveSync 4.2. On that setup, I sync my calendar and tasks with Outlook 2003 ... should be no problem.
But at work, I have a W2K SP4 machine running Outlook 2000 SP-3. Obviously, I also use AS 4.2 at work, and I sync with my Outlook Calendar and tasks.
If I were to flash up to WM6, from what I have been reading, it seems I would need AS 4.5, which I believe requires Outlook 2003 as a minimum, so if I went with WM6, I would lose the ability to sync at work.
Am I correct in what I have gleaned from these forums and Microsoft's AS Pages? Do I need to petiton my employer for an OS upgrade for the PC at my workstation?
Thanks to anyone who could confirm or deny these observations. And MANY thanks to the fine geniuses who are giving us the cookware and the recipes

You're right. You would have to go to OL2003 if you want to retain the ability to sync at work.
Thank you for the quick reply!
Ahhh, that's what I thought. Too bad I really wanted to try (at least) one of those ROMs. Oh well.
Maybe I could arrange for my office PC to die, so I get a new one. They ARE replacing malfunctioning desktops with WinXP machines running Office 2003.
Nahh ... I'm too honest to do something like that. Maybe if I just ask REALLY nice, they'll agree to upgrade the OS on the machine I'm using.
Anyway, thanks again for the confirmation. I really do appreciate it!

So... I probably should have researched this a little more before I decided to take the WM6 plunge... but... I didn't...
So haha - here's my situation. I have two computers I can use to sync this too. I use my mac regularly with missing sync. Well, i USED it regularly... But... Missing Sync doesn't work with WM6.
Okay so then there's the work PC. I got the newest version of active sync. However, Active Sync 4.5 doesn't work with Outlook 2000 - crap.
Am I totally screwed or is there a workaround? Can I set Activesync to sync with windows xp address book instead of outlook? Please help!
Sync problem
If you have the Excalibur, it should have come with a copy of outlook 2002... why not try and install that and see if that resolves your problem.
I have the T-mobile Dash, not the excalibur... While i'm fine with doing anything on the mac, i'd rather not mess too badly with the default apps on the windows PC.
Honestly, what the? Why did I get a trial of Outlook with this thing? Why not the full version? Thats the way it was when I purchased my previous devices!
I think it is Outlook for your PC, not PDA.
Exactly, Outlook 2007 for Windows PCs trial. I mean, you need Outlook on the PC to sync contacts and calendar, so why not the full version. Meh. Kinda glad I already had Outlook, and wasn't relying on the one that came with the phone!
You can use Outlook Express to sync you contacts.

how the heck did ya manage that? Surely through some third party tool or something?
Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5
Pff... I've given up ActiveSync because I have to sync with 2 PC's...
I use Funambol and that works much better!

Sure, when it comes to microstop you can sum up their strategies as:
1.- increasing greed.
2.- counterworking any open standards.
Honestly, Outlook is the worst ever piece of software for email client.
I banned it 2 years ago (and windows+ office too)
Backing up/ restoring outlook is a nightmare.
Look up in outlook messages is totally unresponsive above 1000 messages!
If you stick to windows then use thunderbird with funambol extension for sync your calendar, briefcase, notes, contacts thru internet and push mail service.
Thunderbird profile can be exported to other computers even mac or linux or 2 pc's can use the same thunderbird profile
Don't forget the 100's usefull extensions and skins for thunderbird.
Mobile sync
I have not heard of funambol before. Can you tell me if it will sync the status of emails. ie if I have read it on the mobile it shows as read on the desktop.
I have a desktop, laptop and mobile (just upgraded from Tytn2 to Touch Pro 2 and well impressed) and would like to sync the pst files on all 3.
I have found software (Sync2 from 4Team Corp) that works automatically from the laptop to the desktop by creating a third party copy of the pst anywhere on the LAN which doubles as a complete backup of Outlook, nice solution and mine is set to sync every 10 mins for all 3 of my business email accounts.
What I cannot do is to sync the status of emails with my Touch Pro 2 and the 4Team Corp help desk say that they cannot do this. With mobile communication being so key and easy today with superb tools (from HTC) to work, one of you cleaver buggers out there must be able to sort the issue and sync the mobile pst with the desktop version.
Large beer on the table for the first to provide a real solution!

I have been living on MS-LookOut for many years now. I use standard IT practices (like keeping up to date on patches, automatic archiving) and I find Outlook to be very responsive, and I have a 2G mail store on my laptop. I manage my own Exchange server, and it has been very reliable and responsive. It is a matter of using modern platforms- a netbook class machine with XP just won't cut it.
My Outlook Mobile could be better- I wish I could have multiple exchange server support.

Then you haven't used Lotus Notes. Yeah, it's primarily groupware, but it was the ony e-mail client my former employer would allow. And it was horrible.
I have no problems with Outlook. I use Thunderbird for accessing personal e-mail at work, but I prefer Outlook by a mile.

+1. There is a limit of 2 PC's only on Activesync but it works as it should.
Some people just hate M$ because some people tell them to

Yes, and on the other hand, I don't think there is a limit as to the number of devices a PC can sync to - maximum I have tried was 5 PPC to one PC and to a single Outlook profile.

I think x number of PPC are allowed to be connected to one PC, BUT 1 PPC can only sync/connect with max 2 different PC's. It can connect as a guest on more than 2 PC's though.
I tried connecting my TP2 to my work PC and active sync asked me to delete either desktop PC or laptop to make way for work synchorization.
What you said is correct!
Seriously, if you're planning on using more than one PC for emails, you're better off keeping them on the mailserver anyway.
Gmail with IMAP access means that I could access them from Outlook on my home PC, work PC and netbook (if I didn't like their web client) AND my TP2. And the changes I make on any of them apply to the rest.
That way, you don't have to worry about backing them up, because even if your machine catches fire, you just connect via IMAP on the replacement and get them all back again.
It is OK to use and like Microsoft products

Same here. I wish it would support multiple exchange servers.
Also, I have not observed any response problems at work. We have several anal-retentive, email-saving people who absolutely refuse to archive their emails. All of the email hoarders have 10s of thousands of emails, and multi-gigabyte mail stores on the laptop. Everyone is happy with the Outlook/Exchange combination. Schedules are synchronized, assistants have access to delegated mailboxes, etc.
Hello evryone
After getting some hours to spend with my new Pro2 i was checking out the options to sync agenda email contacts etc.
However i am a new user to win mobile and i wasnt using outlook before on my laptop. I just installed it, however to sync it i have to enable the options in the mobile device manager that standard comes with the phone.

however, i only have an hotmail email account, how do y sinc this with outlook and my pro2?
might not be possible, so maybe some1 can tell me how to sync my contacts to my outlook?
kind regards
Oh, man. I see you're a total newcomer, welcome to the Windows Mobile world! Your phone will look like complicated at first, but after a couple weeks playing with it, you should be able to start harnessing it's power.
Pocket Outlook is integrated on your phone. The contact tab, calendar, tasks, etc IS pocket Outlook itself.
In order to sync your contacts with windows, you need to have the syncing software installed. It's on your phone's CD. If not, then you can get it from Microsoft:
Windows XP and earlier, use Activesync.
Windows Vista, Seven, use Windows Mobile Device Center.
After the syncing software is installed, just plug in your phone, select activesync, and follow the instructions on-screen.
To sync your hotmail account directly to your phone, you can use Windows Live (add it to the program tabs) and then sign-in. If you want it directly in outlook PC, then search for the Outlook Connector.
For hotmail; go to the TF3D--> Settings--> email setup menu and enter your details as prompted; it will automatically create a hotmail connection file for you
Hey,
just got the SGS and my first impression is great. The screen is fantastic, it allmost feels like a toy because of the low weight (it's usable with one hand) and it feels really fast. I can stream music with spotify while surfing on the net, multitasking works on this unit. I'm very glad to the rid of my HD2 which had a lot of specs, but never was reliable.
Anyhow, I'm used to sync with Microsoft Myphone but I can't find out how to export or in any other way move my contacts to my new phone. Googled, but the only solution I found was to sync to a windows mobile phone and export from the phone, but since I've sold my HD2 that's no solution for me.
What's the best way to sync the phone? (email and contacts most important) Does android/samsung got something like the myphone? That is the best sync-method I've tried so far.
Any thoughts ?

The best method I've found is to use this free service http://miqlive.com/ .
I also migrated from a HD2 to SGS. But luckily for me before I traded in my HD2 i used Miqlive for winmo 6.5 and synced all my contacts and sms.
Then just a few days ago MiqLive for android was released, so now I have all my contacts back.
Your best bet would be to borrow a friends winmo hp to sync with microsoft myphone and then sync to miqlive.
Can't you just sync Myphone with Outlook on a pc and then Outlook with your Google exchange account?

No you can't.
"Unfortunately, there is no way to download the data that is stored in your My Phone web page directly to your computer.
You could sync your phone to My Phone and then sync your phone to your computer to transfer the data from My Phone to Outlook on your computer.
Then you could work with the data in Outlook on your computer."
Check this http://tinyurl.com/2etd8ec
Thank you for trying to help me. Too bad I can't sync without having another phone. I'll probably have to do it manually then, don't have any wm phone to borrow.
The 'miqlive' was great, just what I've been looking for It works really well and does everything as good as the myphone app.
