New to TP2 and ROMs.. some questions - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

So I just bought my TP2 yesterday and right away cleared up my clock on the home screen, installed smartphone tracker, google maps.. whole bunch of stuff. A lot of the ROMs on here seem really cool and a lot better than the default phone. However, will installing this and changing registry items void a warranty and/or when I go to update my phone will it corrupt if I don't return it to default before I update? If not I'd really like to get rid of the black top and bottoms bars, change the icons to a colored option, make my own pictures I set as my wallpaper show up when landscaped.. lots of things I'd like to do. I really do apprieciate all the things everyone has contributed to this site and making the TP2 better for all of us!
Quick side question..
Which is best web browser to use? I bounce between opera and skyfire (for flash)
edit: Also, is the 2.5 update out yet for us att?

Welcome to the forum.
Before considering re flashing. you should read the sticky posts at the top of each forum,
Technically yes, re flashing with unofficial roms may cause warranty issues, however, if done correctly I personally feel the benefits outweigh the other issues.
changing settings on your current rom and not reverting before flashing shouldn't cause you any problems.
Cheers
Steve

2 smartphone questions

So Ive switched to a smartphone for various reasons from the wizard, and Im trying to at least get a couple things I was quite fond of into my excalibur.
First, I would love to see my contacts first name, last name. I noticed a few people raised the question, but I have yet to see a solution. Any help with this would be great.
Second, and infinitely more important, I desperately need a way to run some palm software (http://www.davideubank.com/ , important calculation charts for on set movie stuff) on the phone. I was using style tap on the wizard, but it was a bit buggy. If anyone know of any way to run this stuff that would be amazing.
Thanks guys, keep rockin.

ThemesDroid - Website Progress Updates, Dream Theme Warehouse

i would love to see a website specifically for g1 themes. with images of all themes, all linking back to the developer. as well as all themes and other downloads being hosted on local server, instead of having to use FTP services like megashares etc.
if anyone with web development/programming experience would be interested in assisting me it would be appreciated, and i think a site of this nature would benefit the android global community as a whole.
may i also state that i have a server with enough bandwidth and server space to handle the high traffic volume that follows a site like this.
i see some great possibilities with this, but in order to get it off the ground i will need some help.
I would love to say yes but my web dev skills have never been used in a real environment.
I would like to see something like this get off the ground. Its such a great idea.
although i do not have a crazy lot of time i do have an extra website that i currently do not use. Its good for a little less than a year and i "could" use iWeb or something to put a site together since it would take crazy less time. Its unlimited everything so i could host the .zip files right on it and just have people download from there. If enough people would use it though. I would def have to have everyone's permission though as i am not getting in trouble with people over something like this. if its something some of these Theme devs would enjoy i could use my current site on DreamHost and allow the download straight from the site with Pictures. Could have a page for each one of them too. Let me know as i would be willing to do this so it would be 100% easier to find things.
Email me at [email protected]
I would be willing to put the time in too since i could add an Ad at the top for some income towards the renew cost if necessary. And i do know what i am doing but it would def have to be a use site not just something 10 people use. www.edgewoodcma.org is my newest site i got up and running for a church.
thats pretty much the idea, it doenst really matter which server is used, however i do have a little over 2 years on mine, but it is unlimited just as yours is. however i do not think a page made in iWeb or something will work quite as nicely as something designed for dynamic updating by many devs.
im looking into a PHP CMS engine that will allow devs to name their .zip files and upload with a thumbnail of the theme. and have the site automatically post the new theme with the naming convention used in the .zip and show the thumbnail as a link to the direct download from the server.
i wanted to try and stay away from another forum site, as well. this is the forum site for android pretty much, we may have a discussion area in the theme site, however the downloads and updates will be on another portion of the page as to eliminate the need to sift through threads to find the themes you want.
The reason i posted that i would be willing to make and update the site is so that useless things will be kept out. I would be willing to accept all photos and .zip files in my email then post onto the site so that duplicates and useless things are kept to a minimum. I would also make multiple sections showing what update you are running (i.e. RC33, ADP 1.5, Dude, ect) and a complete breakdown so that it is as easily as possible to do things. The reason i would use iWeb is because of its simplicity. You could update a site within 2minutes for whatever is needed. I could update anywhere in a matter of minutes which would mean more thing up and running. Just an idea though as i too am wishing it was far easier to locate things instead of sifting through hundreds of posts to find the one decent theme out off 100.
that sounds great, will iWeb allow you to create dynamic websites for the dev to upload his work? or will you manage the whole thing as a static database (updated when devs send you their work)?
if you wish to create this, then please do. i shall continue to look for a permanent, maintenance free*, catalogue of themes. but until an engine is created for that purpose your offer sounds perfect. the android community desperately needs someplace organized to find these themes.
thank you for your offer, if you would like any sort of graphic help just let me know and ill do my best.
Dynamic sounds best, you could accept members (ie theme creators) and only have have control over posting themes and updates to their own themes?
We are actually working on this right now. Just purchased themesdroid.com a couple days ago.
We have a dedicated server we are going to be running it on. We are actively developing the site now. Perhaps we should combine our efforts.
awesome, let me know if you need any help, or any server space etc.
id love to help in any way i can.

It does seem like a good idea, although I have read in the past something about "why have many resources in many places"...one central location for it all is great, so it would have to have many advantages for it to work. I know instant thumbnails would be 1 (forums it doesnt work like that). Local files is another. Purchasable is probably something considerable.
Ive built for big corps before, and know a lot about that stuff. If you guys need help with doing anything I know almost any solution. Something like "if you donate you get extras" or something, and only those that did donate can get certain things. Helps the developers for their time and effort (like the apps, makes sense).
We are currently investigating a couple options for ThemesDroid.com. We have started working on a download site from the ground up, but we are also looking for possible alternatives. Does anyone know of any decent open source CMS/DMS systems? We have not seen anything that was worth a darn, but if anyone knows of a good one then there is no sense in reinventing the wheel.

What are you looking for in this CMS/DMS system?
well php-fusion is always a safe choice, there was something new... what was it.. http://expressionengine.com/
Ive always found Joomla to be the most flexible system to date, complicated but it will do 'everything' your looking it to do. It has great theme support as well (great flexibility for customizablity). Very secure too.
@malaeus, sorry to say but php-anything is almost always a bad choice, they have many loops/hackable holes.
Xoops is good too. Drupal is good. Or if you have a M$ server (asp), dot net nuke is good, has many add-ons for great flexibility.
Just some suggestions for you guys (btw, all those are free [opensource like android ]
I've been building Drupal sites for years now... if you guys need help, let me know.

Started it 3 hours ago, thats how quick and easy it is. Its just a demo to show you what you can do with it. If you like cool, if not I at least recommend you check out joomla, thats what I created that with (there is no "starting from ground up" with it, its just there to "put the stuff in"). That template is free too (there are plenty out there, I also make my own which takes time). Just threw it together because I had the last three hours off from work and wanted to play with it again.
Drupals good, but I just dont think it has the best of plugins, they are ....awkward or something I dont know.
@kdf2883: Something geared towards downloads. Something preferably lightweight compared to Joomla/Drupal etc
@theslam08: I currently have a test of Joomla + DocMan I have been playing with, but Joomla seems like overkill for what we are doing. It doesn't all our needs so we would still have to modify it yet it does a bunch of junk we don't need. Then there's the usual update every week or get hacked bit...
We are leaning towards just doing everything from scratch. I could have a Joomla site up in a day or two or we can give it a couple weeks to build our own system from the ground up. What do you guys think?
for something like this, we may want to try something as simple as wordpress. each post would be a new theme, images and text would include server direct download link. its at least one of the most compatible backbones i can think of.
i have little to no experience in drupal and joomla etc. however when it comes to the design aspect of the website, thats closing in on my specialty.
@slam nice job on that layout btw. especially considering time spent.
Look at the Lock 2.0 themes site. They use WordPress and in my opinion it's a mess.

[res] A repository/guide just for you, AT&T Tilt 2 owners.

Hi!
You may know me as the guy who made blownfuze.org. I've done it again (I'm doing it, rather) and the address is tilt2.blownfuze.org. Basically it's a good place to unleash your phone, beginners to vets, while hiding from ad banners, thread chaos and rapidshare links.
The site, targeted specifically at the AT&T crowd but useful for all TP2 owners, is divided into a dozen chapters including how to flash a rom and my reflections on the various existing roms, the usual stuff to install (like flash, mortscript, MSCF and MSVC), a collection of Opera builds and other browsers and RSS readers, tweaking tools (advanced config, hd tweak), email guidance, GPS stuff, multimedia (players, tones), recreational stuff (dopewars, facebook), expert stuff (vpn client, packet sniffing) and perhaps most importantly what you need to get your phone back to its out-of-the-box stock condition (the software at least) for warranty compliance if you have ever flashed anything. It's the kind of site you might bookmark.
I only recently started this thing and though it is a little premature to post it publicly like this (it will get better over time..) the important sections like installing hardspl, flashing roms and warranty issues, they're good to go and I got some fresh cabs lined up for you too so c'mon down to tilt2.blownfuze.org.
In addition to plugging my site (thanks xda mods), the purpose of this thread is to invite suggestions from you (for example this part is good or that sucks or you should add this and remove that or cite this developer for that cab) so please do that, I will listen, or you can contact me in the contact form thingy at the bottom of my site.
Yours, Doug
Thanks Doug. Your sites are AWESOME and very useful! I don't have a fuze but I've found some sweet programs on your site for my tilt. I look forward to the new site.
Looking good, thank you!
great site, great infos. many thanks.
Looks very good actually, bookmarked it and having a good flick through now. Some very very usefull stuff on there!
Id be tempted to suggest trying to improve the GUI a bit though, theres an awfull lotta text sitting there.
Im Feelin it
This is perfect, Everything works and enhances the phone. Cant complain
thx for the repo guide
NB: Your ZoomAdds thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572270 -- linked to in section 5) has been superseded by this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=578420 -- the earleir one is a version that can't be uninstalled.

Where should I get started?

So I am new to these forums, and new to winmo devices in general(coming from sidekick platform). I have browsed through some threads but still have no clear place to begin. My goal is to customize my brand new touch pro 2 and learn more about my device.
If anyone would be as kind to point me to specific threads on where to begin or have any advice of their own it will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Keep in mind there are a few sub forums for the touch pro 2...
You might want to give the themes and aps sub forum a good read. In there right at the top you'll find this thread Software worth installing on the TP2 *Continuously Updated, links in thread* [MAR 8]
That's definatly a good place for you to start.
Reading through the CABs and Tweaks thread is a good start too. The real potential of the TP2 isn't really unlocked until you start tweaking, and the ability to tweak/customize is one of the best things about Windows Mobile. Read through the thread, see what customizations sound good to you, and try them out. Don't be afraid to tweak. Most any of the customizations can be uninstalled. Or at the last resort, you can hard reset to get to factory settings.

I know u gonna want to get ur phone up to speed, so heres somemore advice. Theres a thread here in general called "why is my phone so slow". Theres some cabs listed there thats like system tweaks to make ur phone more efficient and faster and manage memory better. system tweak cabs to look for is: Data Fix Cab, SD tune up, dynamic system proxy, manila no push internet, and memory leak cab. all of those together will make ur phone UI faster, better internet speeds, better memory management(more free RAM avaliable), and faster read speeds from ur memory card.
It might be a good idea to get a good system file explorer or registry editor. the included file explorer is good but cant edit registry. You might want to look for either the newest Total Commander or PHM editor(might b mispelled). any of those give u complete access to files and system registry. also allows u to back up your data on ur phone in case you ready to try some serious installs
If u havent noticed already, your battery only reads in 10% increments. Theres a mod/cab called No2chem and Chainfire 1% Battery. Once thats installed , your battery meter will give u a more exact/precise battery reading in increments of 1, instead of 10. ur stock battery meter wont show it so u should download a battery meter of sorts. You can either get a new taskbar that 1% is enabled or even easier , just install WMMiniBattery. it will put a small battery meter that stretches across the whole screen up top. itll read in 1% increments and alot easier to see where ur battery life is at. but remember, if u get the 1% battery cab, u also need a new battery meter. The wmminibattery works well with no hiccups. theres another one up here, but gave me issues whenever u opened the keyboard up.
just to let u know, the stock browser in tp2/tilt2 suxxxxxx....so u going to want a new better faster one. LIke Skyfire, Opera mini 5 , and opera mobile 10. i got em all the stock browser i believe the opera 9 or something and internet explorer. the ones i named previously blows all of those out the water when it comes to browsing experience and speeds. plus Skyfire is like the ultimate one. can play any video or movie off the web on a website, mostly. i can use skyfire and watch whole movies from websites with out hardly any slowdown. try that with internet explorer or opera 9 in ull see what i mean. for theme tweaks and stuff, check out that particular thread.
Im not trying to talk ya to death...lmao Just giving u a headstart, cuz theres so much info and tweaks for our phones, that almost impossible to come across them all. one more thing, get either Clean Ram or Clear Temp cab. those help and clear up old files, cache, etc.. also helps to make phone more efficient. I could go on and on listing stuff, but i think with what i named, you will catch up quick to the rest of the community without flashing a new rom.
Just make sure to read up plenty, tons of useful info from very skilled people up here. and when u ready to try out a new operating system on ur phone, Android, just let me know, ill show ya the way..lol
Welcome to Rhodium and have fun modding your phone, i surely have. I only joined in April and already seasoned...lol my phone is nuthing like it was brandnew or completely stock.
When you get some time, go through the custom rom section to see if any of those roms interest you. Once installed, there are countles amounts of modifications that alter the overall appearance of the phone. From boot up to shut down, your phone can be thoroughly customized.

First time with....well everything almost.

I've been with Sprint for almost 9 years now, and before my Evo 4G in 2010 all I had were the old Nextel i95's...so needless to say I'm at a complete loss with WP7. I tinkered and tailored with Android ROM's for years now and have loved a lot about the OS...but I just couldn't pass up this deal for the Lumia 900 on AT&T. I'm beyond satisfied after having set everything up and loving how tightly knit and integrated a lot of the features are. But I still have some questions:
1) Can i screen capture with the stock rom? I don't want to have to unlock this phone (That was one of the reasons I left Android, you needed to unlock to do ANYTHING)
2) Are there any apps beyond the 3 that use a double tile? Is this a setting somewhere that I'm missing on? Kinda like resizing widgets?
3) Are there different themes, beyond the color switching pallete, that can be used with WP7? And while we're at it, is there a different lockscreen or anything else that can be done from it besides unlocking it? (Such as unlocking to text, email, custom app?)
4) What's up with the notifications disappearing after a while before I get a chance to check em? Is there a way to check them besides going to their respective clients to see what I missed?
5) Can you guys point me towards some alternative apps or settings to replace some of the stock feaures?
6) Besides having to login to AT&T all the time, is there a different way to monitor my data usage? A simple app perhaps?
7) Oh and how could I forget....do I have to go all the way to the settings every time to see what the percentage on my battery is? I found a couple threads saying that you have to unlock the phone for this feature but I refuse to believe that something this simple needs a workaround like that.
Thanks in advance guys, loving this OS and looking forward to some of the changes.
1) Unfortunately not. Most screen captures you see on the net are done using the development software.
2) Tiles sizes are determined by the developers. I wish there was a way of making them single or double too.
3) The colours are the only customisation you can do right now without unlocking the device other than changing the lock screen. The lockscreen I like, as it unlocks to the "desktop" when there is no notifications but if you unlock it as a notification happens then it will take you the application required to see the notification.
Also for some awesome lock screens go to the deviantart website.
4) This is my one and only gripe with WP7. Having said that after unlocking the notication is either facebook or twitter (the only ones not shown on the home screen) and both of those show on my "ME" tile. So really if I want to see anything I missed I go to the "ME" tile and slide across to notifications.
5) What stock features do you need help with?
6) Im not on AT&T and my phone provider has an app to do this so I would be contacting AT&T about this.
7) They do not show a % because its not very accurate I think. This is something I at first hated but I don't care that much any more. This is not like my Samsung Galaxy II which wouldn't last a day. I usually get over a days use out of my Lumia so I don't have to look all the time and be worried. When the love heart goes on the battery I know its getting low but still I have HOURS left.
In terms of number 5 I just meant is there an alternate keyboard, browser, gallery, search feature/marketplace etc. Not that I have a problem with any of these (although I do miss haptic feedback on my keyboard) I just wanted to know if there were alternatives.
EDIT: I do have a problem with ONE of those things I mentioned. The marketplace...it seems too cluttered and feels like the phone is always zoomed in with the way everything looks...but that looks like it was done on purpose.
You.can get two off your list with a Developer unlocked device. Think of it this way. Nokia is giving you a $100 credit because of the data issue. Use it to purchase a legitimate Dev key from Microsoft. Can sideload apps, and also develop with it.
1) can do it with homebrew Screen Capturer app.
2) Only Microsoft or OEMs can develop double wide tiles.
3) Need to have an interop unlocked device to add colors, etc. More involved than dev unlocked and not yet available for the L900.
6) The AT&T myAT&T app will give you the info you need. Nokia is also releasing a data tracking app. Coming soon.
7) Homebrew Battery Meter app. Updates a Live Tile every 10 minutes. Pretty accurate. Good history charts.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express
There are a few other browsers and such but they are all just front ends for the existing apps supplied with the device. There is also a few marketplace apps which you might find better. I use AppTastic every now and then purely as it shows what's on sale. There might be an app which I don't think is worth $5 or $6 after the trial but would happily purchase to support the developers for a few bucks.

Well, there are alot of the things that are different. Can't/Won't say if its better because thats a personal choice. I've grown to love the look and feel now. So has my daughter...but my son hates it. I gave them both 2 weeks to like it or I would buy them their next phone. My daughter converted...my son did not, and did not want new phone. But, with that said, there are some things I miss from Android....not much, but some. I do wish Live Tiles were a touch more customizable. I wish I could have some more color schemes instead of the just the current ones. I'd love to have a Black/White and/or Grey/white combination of colors also.
Otherwise....its a matter of just trying and getting used to it. I think it took my daughter 3 days to get used to the tiles and groupings of the hubs and what they are designed for. Her original list of must haves went away....
Thanks for all the help guys, yea I figured that most of my complaints/issues could only be solved with an unlock phone but I figured I'd ask. I've got another question, do apps auto update or do I need to manually check em every time?
Your marketplace tile will have a number on it showing the number of updates available. So no you never need to go check but you do need to initiate the update manually when you see that there is some waiting for update.
Again thanks guys for getting me started with the phone. Just a few more questions:
1) Is there a way to set a tile to immediately turn on/off either Bluetooth or Wifi? Or am I stuck with the default settings tile?
2) Can I save a setting where I don't have to download my pictures every time I open an email? I used to just pit "Always show pictures" on the Android GMail client.
3) I've looked and looked and still cant find a tile to just show battery. Can someone link me to an official one that I don't have to side load?
4) Is the app Bandwidth the only app for network speed test? Its kinda glitchy for me.
5) Is there a way to get that HTC Hub on this Lumia or is that another thing where I gotta unlock the phone? I really like the look of it.
6) Someone mentioned that you can change the lockscreen, or at the very least the wallpaper, how do you do that?
Thanks.

Dont know if someone mentioned this, but you're in the droid mentality right now. Like Apple, alot of the framework is locked down. Even with sideloads, alot of the framework is not available. HTC Hub is one of those. MS did not want that kind of screen and they don't allow it. WP is based on Live Tiles and they are sticking with it...for now.
You can change the lock screen pic by going to settings and Lock+Wallpaper. You can change the timeing settings and the picture. If you have a picture you want to use, go to your pictures hub and simply long press on the pic, use as wallpaper is an option.
But mostly, do not expect alot of hack/modding on these phones. For the most part, most of Windows phones, were Android phones at 1 time...ie the Samsung focus line. HD7 was the HD2 line which has been successfully ported to Android and WP7. If you want android type functionality in terms of look and feel...probably not gonna get it here. Of course, I could be wrong....but...who knows.

I don't have answers for all of these, but here's a few (and fwiw I agree
with alodar1). But before I begin, not sure if you're aware of the Marketplace online (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/marketplace) - might make searching easier as you're starting out.
1) "Settings Tile" is 1 such app (I don't use these, so I can't recommend which one to install, but I've seen this one recommended... *shrug*) http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/102014a6-156e-4604-8f1a-2a86e4edf191
2 & 3 don't know, sorry
4) TestMyNet works decent: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/a25ec139-fc33-4571-9425-cf031a3312bb
5) No, sorry (I had it and never really used it...)
6) Answered above =)
You may also want to check out 'AppFlow' (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/578ef361-c265-46b7-b6f4-63cbd7fbefe0) or some similar application recommendation app.

Yea I realize I still kinda am in that mentality. It's just there's so many little things I took for granted that I never realized were there until this happened. I love this platform so far though, I have no major complaints, just small issues with it. But thanks for the tip, yea I know about the HD2 cause the first thing my brother did when he got that a couple years ago was have me put Gingerbread on it lol. I'll stick with what I've got for now tho, this is a ridiculously smooth experience and if I've gotta make some sacrifices, oh well. I still get everything done that I want throughout the day...I just wished some apps were better supported.
