Everytime my phone gets unlocked by pressing the menu button in my pocket, is there a way to disable this?
Thanks
I would also like to know how to do this. Could this be implemented into 2.91 please paul?!!
+1 - made a lot of accidental calls in my pocket .. this forced me to activate that annoying and slow unlock pattern
Wow, things got buried fast over in the CDMA forums. We got a little extra info from digging around in our phones about this same problem. I don't think any of us have solved it yet but hopefully the info will be useful to solve it for everyone eh?

Little bump
Put the phone face down in your pants, no way of pressing the menu screen that way
also protects the screen for breaking bij any bumps or something.
Always have my hero in my pants never ever made an accidental call.

that is the only way. also with the programm lock 2.0 the screen still get on every time.
when the hero is in my pants, it's also making calls.
It's always calling my girlfriend, no matter if I lock it, or have it face down.
I came to the conclusion, that it was not the hero that was dialing numbers from my pants..
I thought this would be simple for the devs running a command that just disabled that button, but hey im not a dev, i know **** about it thanks for looking into it anyway

would it be strange that it keeps calling my mom in my pants?
yah.. we need a fix for this.
All joking aside; putting in a security pattern to unlock will take away the problem, though you'd have to draw the pattern every time you want to unlock..

Only problem is you're still able to call 911 or whatever since the emergency button is vis/pushable...
I'd rather accidently call my girl instead of the ambulance lol!

This is one of those problems that was always there but wasn't big enough for me to remember to comment about. Now it became big enough.
I was at a wedding over the weekend. Priest comes in before the service starts, remind people of a few ground rules and remembering to turn off mobiles. I had my phone on a meeting profile (basically something from my Nokia days - a very quiet beep for notifications and no vibrate) but I thought, what the hell, let me just turn it off completely.
So I did. Phone off. To the inside jacket pocket it went.
Wedding service starts. Bride comes in. Everyone sits. To my embarassment, on sitting I hear the Quietly Brilliant intro jingle. I'm think a combination of WTF and "Oh for **** sake!"
The Desire is waaaay too easy to turn on! It should definitely be a long press to turn it on not a regular tap which can happen at any time. I ended up putting it back on my meeting profile as that was a safer way to keep it quiet. This shouldn't have to happen.
I've thought that too. Fortunately not had any issues like that but do agree. I think this will be fixed when silicon cases get here in abundance!
It annoys the hell out of me too.
If you turn the phone off in silent mode then you don't get it when you turn back on but you need to remember to do that,
I think there is an app that does this automatically - sure someone will post the name of it...
Silent Boot is the answer to your problem.

Hhmmm. Deliberately misunderstanding the point of the OP topic? I read this and sympathised, have had a few instances myself when phones have turned on in awkward situations myself.
Appreciated the answer. Have installed Silent Boot and am less worried I might get caught out in future.
As to the last posters comments - why waste your time and ours if you are not interested in the thread? maybe you just like reviewing form threads... if that's the case allow me to rebirth your post.

I was tempted to simply diss this individual but let me just politely respond.
1. If this is the most stupid post you have ever seen, then feel happy you only read post written by like-minded people.
2. It would also seem that like-minded people to CerB would believe that design concerns like turning on and off a device are non-concerns. In the current market, let's be honest, there is a huge amount of overlap in smartphone function. And Apple have shown that even selling a sub-par phone can be successfull when you do things like make a "tiny" thing like how the phone transitions from screen to screen a pleasure.
I'm guessing if you CerB were a boss, and someone came to you to spend time making screen transitions really slick, you would have sacked them.
3. What exactly is "ROOOOOOOOOOOOOFL"? I understand ROFL, but not what you put.
As zzleezz indicated, there was really no need for your post, or the tone. But, like I seek to get on these forums, maybe you can get educated.
Maybe ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOFL was him falling down the stairs?? lol!!
download the mute app off the market.. mutes everything.. in one touch, also if its activated and you turn your phone off when it reboots it does not make the startup sound. not perfect but an easy workaround.

That's how it should work.
However, I don't think that this solves the topic starter's problem completely. Silent Boot will mute the bootup sound but, since your phone is on, you will get notifications of other events such as text messages, as Silent Boot will turn up the volume again after boot (although that might happen only if the volume was turned up before shutting down). So, you might still disturb wedding ceremonies with those notifications.
I had a Hero beore Desire, and find it quite annoying that they decided to place the powerbutton on top of the phone. When I put the phone in my jeans pocket, or when I take it out, it turns on the screen and I have found it to starting apps and all kinds. On the Hero the powerbutton was much better placed, imo. Not quite the same thing as OP, but related to the powerbutton, and how easy it is to accidentaly push it.
Only issue with SilentBoot is that it restores your previous settings after boot, so your phone can turn on silently without you knowing, then your awesome ringtone can steal the show instead of the boot music.
That works around the sound, but not the issue of the phone being very easy to turn on. The button placement is pretty bad to start with, and isn't recessed, so is very easy to press accidentally. I had mine turn on on a plane - cue lots of "there's always one" glances from nearby passengers... I wonder if this is something that could be tweaked somehow if there is some flash setting for a dwell time on the power button.

I hav had the almost esact same problem! quite embarising at times
The drag up/down (accept/deny call) is really idiotic when the phone is in a pocket, where you have to pull up the phone from the pocket when you get a call. Do anybody have any solution to this problem? are there any alternatives accepting/denying calls?
Yes, this is very frustrating for me also, haven't found a solution though!
Use Lockbot Pro from the market
You can choose from several types of locking screens, and modify them.
Word of advice: get the Pro version, it is much more stable then the free one
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
@fluor: I know a guy that use fluor as nickname...are you from norway by any chance?
Lockbot pro, is a bit lame, it only works intermittently!
I have only tried the free version, and have no intention of trying the paid one, just on the off chance that it may work correctly!!
Surely, a developer would wish to entice someone into paying for their app, by making a trial/free version that actually works!!
What's the bloody point, in making a free app that doesn't work properly, as if I would pay for this rubbish!
HTC should have designed an unlock screen that doesn't hang up your call, simply when you take it out of your pocket, I mean, is it really to much to ask, for a device that costs this much!
It's pretty basic stuff really.... I don't want an elephants ear on a bun, I just don't want to keep hanging up on people when I take my phone out of my bloody pocket!
i also hope for a free app. i see there are a lot when i search for lock, but not sure which actually work.
for the hang up problem, a workaround is to put the phone the other way when you insert it into the pocket, so it picks up instead of hanging up when you pull it up. however it's stupid.

You say Lockbot Pro is lame, but have only tried the free version??
I think you mean the developer is lame if he made an unstable free version?
All I can say is that it works perfectly for me, and I can only recommend it based on my own experience.
I had a few problems with the free version, yes...but I took the chance on the Pro version anyways...after all, what's $1.99 or whatever anyway.
And, now I have a lockscreen that works as I want it
also using lockbot pro now to get rid of the useless lock screen from sense.
but it doesnt solve this prob, as it doesnt lock on incoming calls
I have a workaround for you.
Put your desire in your pocket top first.
Then when you take it out of the pocket, if the screen is pressed, then "gesture" will be the opposite of what is needed to answer the call.
You will do a gesture up instead of down to answer the call. That is how I do it
Pattern unlock is useless too. You still get the slide to answer/reject screen before the pattern thingy comes up.
Is there a way we can solve this with a cooked rom? I'm trying to wait for the 2.2 rom to be ready, but this problem is annoying enough to flash now I think.

No pulling te screen up doesn't do anything, while pulling it up answers it.
I had a htc hero for about 8 months, always had it top down face towards leg.
Use the desire in the same way and never ever had a call in my pants.
I can't believe HTC have made such an elementary mistake.
I ended up buying a flip case for the phone. Solved the problem and protects the phone and screen as well.
Similar Problem
I have a very similar problem.. Because the vibration is so weak I often do not feel the phone go off in my pocket. Due to the warmth of my leg and moving around the phone continuously picks up by itself.
Does anyone else have this problem?
This is very annoying!!!
If I could only choose to answer calls by the hard button, it would solve it.
Has anybody (rooted) tried using the stock lock screen (the horizonal swipe as opposed to vertical), could this solve your problem?

Yes. Search the forum for vanilla/rotary.
has anyone found a simple solution to this? I do put my phone in top first... but this means i am hanging up on people when i don't want to.
I want to be able to pull my phone out of my pocket and check who it is then decide what to do.
If you are on the phone and get a 2nd call on call waiting you can answer it and the phone will automatically put the first call on hold. Say you tell the 2nd caller you will call them back and then want to switch back to 1st call. If you press "End" it hangs up on both callers. If you press "Menu" there is an option to "Hang up all calls" or something similar which again does the same thing I don't want. I can't find a way to just hang up on ONE call. Is this a bug or am I just missing something?
Ok, so no one uses the phone feature of the EVO? No one has ever had a call come though on call waiting?
Can anyone just help me verify whether this problem is just my own or happens for everyone?

Thanks for the reply. I don't want to hang up on the held caller, but I want to hang up on the active caller. Every other HTC phone I've used in the last 5 years will hang up on the active caller and then switch you back to the held caller. Did they really mean for it to hang up on both at once? Does anyone else's phone do this?
My understanding is that this is some limitation of CDMA. All my sprint/verizon phones have had this same issue.
Every Sprint phone I've had has been this way. I think it is an issue with their network and not the phone itself. There is no way to hang up on just one of the callers.
Thanks everyone. The carrier is the problem then. I was with AT&T before this phone and never had Sprint before. Not a huge fan, but its ok.

Cool, Thanks for the info guys. I thought my Evo was retarded or something.
Got the same problem here on my evo also had three problem on my hero...
Question though will it burn up minutes with both calls sitting there?

Let me first preface this by saying that I have done a search...
I am coming from Tmobile, and have owned 3 Android phones on that network. I have noticed the flaw on sprint/sense of not being able to hang up on a second call waiting caller. However, I also am very shocked that it seems like you cannot merge two calls. Is there something that I am missing? Is there something either in settings or even a rom that will enable that ability? I really use the conference call ability a lot. thanks
hit the menu softkey
when your on a call and you receive a call or want to make another call just hit the soft menu key at the bottom of your device. then you will get the "phone application menu slide up screen" there you can add another call or if you received another call you can "flash" between calls. once you have both calls and you see the active call light be green while the other call is on hold is light up in orange. if you hit the menu soft key during this process of calls being hold/active you will see a new option in the slide up menu that says "merge calls" with a lane merge sign similar to when your on the highway.
hope this is what your question was in reference to
edit-i believe if you want to hang up on a previous call. just touch the caller and it will hang that call, but will remain on the screen with a red light on it.(uncertain though)

-call comes in
-answer
-second call comes in
-hit answer and it puts the other call on hold
-I hit switch or merge calls
-nothing happens
-I hang up on the second call
-both calls end
Now what is supposed to happen is that my phone rings back with the first call, however this almost never happens and I lose both calls.

Haha this happens to me with all my sprint phones. It happened on my TP, my TP2, and my Evo, so at the very least, it's not an android or Evo problem, it's a CDMA problem. You're not alone.
I feel kinda perplexed when I think of "smartphones" with all their awesome features, but they just can't seem to get the phone part down... ie, iPhone 4 signal issues, CDMA call waiting/merging.. I guess that society is going backwards

Well, I tried the solutions recommended here but they did not work.
