Another GPS issue - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Running stock T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 WM 6.1, stock radio.
Briefly: I have an old version of iGuidance (2.1.3). When I first start iGuidance and it looks for a GPS unit, the phone's GPS stops functioning. Only a hard reset helps.
In detail: this whole thing almost drove me nuts. I get the phone, install iGuidance, start it. It doesn't find a GPS device. I start Google Maps and other apps, try every which way, it still can't acquire a lock. Was about to return the phone when I decided to hard reset. Google Maps started working.
Eventually, with the help of HTC GPS Tool, I figured out what triggered the error. I start HTC GPS Tool, open port, it gets NMEA data just fine. If I then start iGuidance, NMEA messages immediately stop, running a test produces an error message (something like "Failed to obtain NMEA data"). Only a hard reset helps.
I know there is a GPS patch for European version, but I'm reluctant to hard SPL just for that (anobody tried it, anyway? any side effects?) Waiting for official update but in the meantime, could there be another solution?

I know this isn't going to be much help, and probably not what you want to hear, but I'm using iGuidance 4.x without any problems. Google, Bing and iGuidance all work fine together.
Maybe it's just time to upgrade you software?

Problem solved
It was simple:
1. Backup HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver.
2. Start iGuidance, set iGuidance to correct GPS settings (COM4, 4800 baud), close.
3. Restore GPS Intermediate Driver.
I suspected the problem was caused not by the navigation system itself, but by its trying to locate GPS device. This confirms it.
I also have TomTom 6, and spent last night trying to install the bloody junk on my TP2. But of course it's incompatible with WVGA. On the Axim I had both, and hardly ever used TomTom, since even the old version of iGuidance was so much better.

GPS problems - can't get a fix

Hi,
I'm wondering whether I'm going to have to take my Orbit back to the O2 shop this week. I've been using it for just over a month now, and absolutely love it. I've been using Tomtom Navigator 6 as a sat nav program, which was working fine for three weeks, and getting a fix within a few seconds. However, in the last week, I have been unable to get a fix, even though in the 'GPS Status' Screen, I am clearly picking up 7 or 8 satellites (with a strong signal). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling TomTom, but it keeps doing the same thing - finding the satellites, but being unable to get a usable fix. I was wondering if this is likely to be a software or rom issue, or if I'd be better taking the Orbit Back to exchange for a new one? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Pete
1/ Is the GPS Quick Fix data upto date? - if not set the Quick Fix application to update when internet connection is present and connect it to your PC, this should update the information that assists the GPS to start quickly (this method avoids having to pay for the high O2 GPRS charges).
2/ Make sure you are not driving off before the unit gets a position fix, once moving without a fix the unit will have an even harder job.
Has anything else changed, the car, position in the vehicle etc - Mike
Thanks for the reply Mike. I have been downloading updates through Quick GPS every day, and I haven't changed anything about how I've been using the Orbit. I've removed Tom Tom completely from my storage card and I'm going to try one last fresh install to see if it helps.
Watch this space!
Pete
Well, after doing a completely clean install of Tomtom onto my sd card and letting it sit with a blank GPS Status screen for nearly 10 minutes, everything appears to be working fine again I think one of the files must have gfone a bit funny, but at least it's all working again, and Mr T can guide my way once again!
Thanks again for the help Mike.

GPS settings?

Howdy,
I've just upgraded to the O2 Orbit phone, and am trying to get the GPS working, however, I can't seem to. In settings, all I can see is external gps, but this phone should have an inernal one (it even has the antenna in the back).
For the life of me, i can't seem to find out how to get the GPS working... anyone could help?
a.
Hi Adam.
Which GPS software are you using on your device?
At the moment, none, as before I bite the bullet and buy one, I wanted to see how good the GPS receiver was... so I tried the TomTom GPS driver, that includes a testing thing that shows locks on sats, and so far, after about 10 minutes, still nothing...
Having said that, I tried Google Maps, and that can't get a GPS lock either.
Try making sure the settings are setup for the default configuration before using GOOGLE MAPS.
Start>Settings>External GPS>GPS PROGRAM PORT = COM4
Then try google maps using try MENU>Track Location and see if the GPS starts working flashing AMBER LED and you should get a text message at the top of the screen saying initializing GPS and searching for sats.
Good luck, I found this Artemis to work beautifully with TOMTOM6 and a 2GB mSD card.
I've added a program called GPS Viewer, this gives you GPS gives some handy GPS details.
As for the GPS settings:
Programs
GPS program port:COM4
Hardware
GPS hardware portNone)
Baud rate:115200
Access
I have 'Manage GPS automatically' ticked.
My deveice always seems to want a vertically sight of the sky to locate the satellites but once connected i can take it indoors no problems.
Interestlingly, when I make the change to Baud Rate in hardware, and click ok... if I go back, it has reset itself to 4800?
A.
quickGPS
in my HTC3300, I've found QUICKGPS ? I've tried to run it, but after a few minutes it send a message so it cannot make the connection
Anyone can help me
thx a lot
michael
quick GPS is just to speed up the process the phone neesd to locate the sattelites.
well but if i were you i would check the baudrate. the default setting is at 4800
thank you very much really nice tip i spend about 3 hours try to get it working but now done it in 1 minuts and working but keep saying no valid signals whats that mean???

GPS Lock, anyone with issues?

Has anyone managed to get their GPS Locking in Google Maps?
I've used QuickGPS to download the database and set Google Maps to use GPS but it never gets a fix.
When in TomTom it knows theres satalites about but doesn't connect to any.
Wondering if I have a duff.... anyone else?
How fast do you connect to satalites?
Have you been out of the house? Some houses really interferre with the connection.
Also, maybe there are some settings in the application you have to change? It should get a fix pretty quick. (first time from 10 sec tot 60, after that, below 10 sec).
So you have updated the quick GPS? Did you (after running tomtom and getting the update for the first time) do a soft reset?

Yeah, did a soft reset after I turned A-GPS on in Advanced Config program. Have tried it in work which usually gets a fix, but will try outdoors, just thought I'd ask the question first
why did you do it on in advanced config? maybe that's where it went wrong. Can't remember me having to put A-GPS on in advanced Config program.
I had the issue in google maps where I could not get a lock. I had to manually configure connectivity to com port 4 in settings.
After that it has worked perfectly. I cannot say if TomTom works or not as I am waiting for my ne SD card to be delivered.
I have however noticed that everytime I sync with active sync QuickGPS always moans it is out of date even thoguh I might have updated it about 1/2 an hour ago.
Its not a major issue as its connected to my PC and just downloads the data again. i'm just ignoring it.
Do not use A-gps.
I have my TP2 fixing with no problem without it: first fix in 55", then always under 10".
Try and use for first fix Quickgps.

Brilliant, turned off A-GPS and loaded TomTom 7.915/Google Maps, got a lock, even indoors.
Spot on, thanks for that!
Turn off A-GPS?
I keep seeing that to make the GPS work better, while also using QuickGPS, the A-GPS should be turned off?
How do I do this?
I have only had the Touch Pro2 for a few days, but have not been able to get a satellite lock in Google Maps even when standing outside away from many buildings.
If it would work better with A-GPS disabled, please tell me how to do this!
Thanks,
Dazzer

It should be turned off by default, I turned mine on using a program called Advanced Config.

Ok, thanks, just going to go try Google Maps again to see if I can get a lock. Maybe I just wasn't outside long enough, or far enough away from buildings last time.
Hopefully I can make GPS work soon
Ok, I just sat outside for about 20 minutes, in the middle of a field, away from any buildings, and was unable to get any GPS lock!
What is wrong here?
I have not touched the GPS Port settings in the control panel, but Google Maps only says Seeking Satellites (0) all the time.
If I do change Google Maps to use COM 4 Baud 4800, it gets worse and says Seeking Satellites (48037656) or some other equally stupid number! At least 0 makes sense, as there are not millions of GPS satellites, only about 20!
Please help, surely there is some way to make GPS work?
Thanks,
DW
Hi all,
AGPS is not currently supported by any UK Networks, so should be turned off if in the UK.
Cheers,
Beasty
i think i ended up setting all mine to com0 but i think it wasn't working originally coz i was sitting in the car and it badly needs a wash (yes that bad). Just stuck it up by window for around 2 mins and it had 8 satellites but i've reset it so often since i last used the gps i wouldn't have been surprised with around 5 mins ... 20 on the other hand is a bit daft
Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with settings somewhere, as in 20 minutes outside it never indicated a single satellite in Google Maps.
I have downloaded the Advanced Configuration tool, and it says that A-GPS is Disabled, which is correct for the UK, so there is nothing to change here.
I have tried changing the Port settings, but I don't know what I should change it too. The Hardware GPS port is blank!
Getting close to giving up for the day, but I really want to get GPS working soon!

Ok, I had the same problems, have you updated Quick GPS? Are you using Google Maps?
If you go into settings and go to External GPS my GPS Program Port os COM4 next page GPS Hardware Port is none and Baud Rate is 4800.
Make sure settings are same and restart phone.
Have you installed anything since getting phone? Might be worth doing hard reset and trying is "out of the box" so to speak.
I could confirm the GPS is working and flawlessly! Much quicker than my old HTC P3600i and the locking is done in the CBD area!
I used the QuickGPS (download the latest update) and then using my GPS software called TechrificWay for Australian (it's a rebrand of NavNGo iGo MyWay 8)
Very happy ^^
(I need to set the TechrificWay application settings to find the GPS unit on COM4 though)
I actually spoke to HTC today and they think it's actually a fault with the hardware, possibly the internal antenna for the GPS is not connected properly.
Slightly annoying as I now need to send it back to get a replacement, or have it repaired, but good in that it's not a problem with me using it! There definitely is something wrong that I can't fix, I just can't wait to get one that works now!
I can get a lock, but get bad lag, and it wonders off course regularly. I wonder if it could be that the radio is not that great for GPS, as many other HTCs have suffered with GPS performance that has gotten better with certain flashed radios?
HTC gave me a generic response of "check these settings" (which were all as they should be in terms of com port and baud rate etc... So I think I'll have to call them if it keeps crapping out on me
(Fortunately) For me it turned out to be a genuine hardware fault causing the GPS to not work. I spoke to HTC and they believe I was the first in the UK to need to get a replacement due to a genuine hardware fault, which I guess is an honor (just a very annoying one!).
Even with the GPS not working for the week that I used it, I loved the handset, can't fault it, and can't wait until tomorrow when I should be receiving my brand new replacement, hopefully with working GPS and no faults!
Thanks for the suggestions here though, I needed to make sure it was a hardware fault before sending it back for a replacement.
I've tested three over 30km trips with Tom Tom 7 installed on the device.
Haven't lost a signal once. So it works fine here in Finland.

Unable to fix satellites for GPS

I've tried a bunch of things from the GPS tweaks provided in the sticky (To help reduce the lag) and also hard resetting twice. I'm still unable to fix onto a single satellite as google maps keeps saying "Seeking GPS Satellites (0)".
After hard resetting (both times) the first thing I did was turn on 'A-GPS' and than ran 'QuickGPS' to downloaded what was needed. Right after I'll open the HTC GPSTool' to open the port before opening up Google Maps to let it run for more than 10 minutes on both hard resets yet it is still unable to lock on to a satellite. Even with the GPS off google maps is unable to triangulate me to the right position (it's always off by two streets or so). It's just very frustrating and making me wonder if it's a hardware fault. The same thing occurred when I was using the stock TMO Rom. Also on 'GPSTest' it stays at "GPS Starting Up" with just all red bars and nothing moving but the numbers on the bottom.
I'm on a T-Mobile US Touch Pro 2 flashed with EnergyRom (Genesis) (23016). I've tried both 2.1 and 2.5 and Google maps just pinpoints me to the same location (two streets off).
Any help would be great as this is my first smart phone and first time introduced into the xda world and have liked the experience thus far.
Thank You!
*Sorry if this is the wrong forum to put this in. You may move this wherever it needs to.
Did the GPS work with the stock ROM?
No, the stock rom did the same thing my current rom is doing. It's just pointing to a location two streets away nor was it able to get any satellites. :l
I used these registry settings on my stock sprint.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=78592
BTW, if I understand this correctly, you don't need to configure any ports or do anything special to use the internal gps. The only thing needed is to make sure that the location setting is turned on (the emergency locator option in Settings/Phone/[your network]/Location-Get settings.)

gps not working after the forced mango update

There's a problem with gps on my phone Samsung FOCUS ,Gps is not working even in the open sky, tried several app like -> gpsinfo, wingps and others like RunKeeper,RunSat etc
Phone is Dev unlocked as well as Interop Unlocked with internet sharing enabled.
The update was done using forced method.Updated from stock firmware->7008->7032->7043->7720.68.
Versions ->
Diag app-> 0103
firnware - 2103.11.8.1
hardware rev. no. - 3.1.0.7
Bootloader ver. - 5.8.0.2
radio software ver. - 0.0.0.3
Please help?
Microsoft released a statement saying they don't blame people or doing the forced update... it doesn't do anything bad to the phone so I don't think that's the issue. You might want to try rolling it back to nodo, checking your gps and then reloading mango. if still no go. Hardware issue maybe??
Issue solved,thanks anyway
So, what was the problem?
Don't know, flashed mango again. That's it.
Gps locked in under 10 sec inside the room.
Hmm. My GPS will find my location fine but getting directions is terribly slow now and turn-by-turn will always just say "can't connect to satellites." Now I'm wondering if a rollback and updating again to Mango will fix this.
I'm on official Mango on an AT&T Focus (and I didn't force the update), and I'm having problems just like the previous posters with GPS fixes and 'can't connect to satellite' errors when trying to get directions.
I found a solution by going into another application that uses GPS, getting a GPS fix in there, then going back into the maps. The program I use is "GPS & GPX Logger." After that finds the satellites, the maps work as they should.
For background info, my phone went from NoDO->Mango Beta 2 (7661)->Mango Beta 2 Refresh (7712)->Unforced official Mango including "Samsung Update"
I tried the turn-by-turn again this morning and it actually worked. This is the first time it has since updating last wk. I didn't change a thing, so I have no idea why it work suddenly.
GPS works on Samsung Focus even after Tango update
I own samsung focus 1.3 (AT&T). I purchased it in the beginning of Sep. 2012 (quite late). As soon as I got the phone, I connected it to Zune for updates. After having updated to 7.10.7720.68, I started using the phone. The GPS did not work. I then updated it to 7.10.8773.98 with the hope that updates may make GPS working. I tried all possible tricks available on XDA as well as other forums. I tried following tricks with various permutation & combination:
(i) Pulling out the battery for 30 minutes.
(ii) Changing the MOLR CP/UP setting in GPS diagnostic to UP and CP (one by one),
(iii) Rebooting the phone with location off & again rebotting with location on
(iv) Apps like GPS info & others
& few more which I do not recall now.
After having tried for about a month, I reverted back to original OS version 7.0.7004.0 just to ascertain the availability/ functionality of GPS hardware as on some of the forums I read that their GPS stopped working after No-Do updates. The GPS did not work even after trying all above tricks on 7.0.7004.0 version of OS.
Finally I accepted my GPS to be faulty or not being there and again updated to latest OS version.
One day I read on some forum that putting off the location service & then switching on makes GPS working. Wow, I tried it today, IT WORKED. On bing map it locked, initially with a bigger circle & then reducing down to a dot. In areas covered with thick trees or high-rise buildings, the circle used to become bigger but again in clear sky area it used to reduce down to dot. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Let me observe for some more days to ascertain that this trick actually works.
Those who have not been able to make their GPS working with other tricks, please try this & let us have your feedback on this forum/ thread.
GPS not reliable
In continuation to my previous post, the working of GPS is not reliable. It sometimes works very fine & some times doesn't work at all during the entire journey of 15 Km. You cannot depend on this GPS for navigational aid. It appears to be some software issue. But anyway, I am happy that my GPS is not faulty. Hoping for some fix in future which will make GPS work reliably.

GPS working perfectly for me with my Nokia 800 with Nokia Drive.
Some cars have some sort of coating on the windscreen which sometimes blocks GPS, although I wouldn't expect that to be on US cars.

The issue is not related with car glasses as I have tried a lot in clear sky on foot. The issue seems to be specific to Samsung focus drivers.
