Its takes like over 5 mins (probably longer)to lock on to the gps and thats when you stay still dont know if you can get a lock while moving, i put the setting on other gps device on tomtom itself and com 4 as the gps programme port is on com4 on the gps menu settings.
Question is do i have to live with that or is their some way of speeding it up. Any help given will be very appreaciative.
Another question is will it help if i put the programme on the device itself or leave it on the sorage card and then some how tell the programme the maps are on the memory card.

I would suggest you install the program itself on the device rather than on the storage card. I don't know whether or not does this affect the time it will take to lock to some satellites though. Five minutes or more seems to be on the long side, on average it takes about 1-3 minutes in my experience. There is an application called QuickGPS which claimes to speed up things, however, I have to admit that I didn't notice any difference, to be honest.

Im using TomTom from StorageCard (not for the first time...) and with default settings it don't takes long time to find satellites. i would suggest running QuickGPS could help you...or a faster SDcard....not all of the storage cards are equal in speed....

Hi Guys,
i have this problem a few times and all i had done was to re-write the filepackedephemeris file to the windows directory, do one time update for Quick gps and your problems will go away, there is a thread here about the file.
trust me download it and throw it at the windows folder.
Do you have the link to that thread Neil?
Cheers
I have had this problem before sometimes where it is very difficult to pick up a gps signal. I attributed it to bad gps signal strength as it works fine at other times.
Sometimes resetting tom tom made a difference but not enough that I would do it all the time though.

I also had long connection times and also a week signal, Got TMO-UK to swap the phone will see if this makes for a better reception
Same problem to me... but now I update QuickGPS every day....
now with an actuall QuickGPS it takes about 15-20 seconds to get a gps signal...
So I think an updated QuickGPS is the right way...
Can someone tell me how to do quickgps method, I dont know how to reg edit and not sure what programe does it and please can someone give me a noobs guide to doing quickgps. I have read a couple of threads and cant seem to make heads and tails it either says that does not work anymore this one does and the method just changes a few times. Can someone give me the correct way in here to do it as i am majorly confused.
quickgps is a program that is installed on b&b 4.0, and some other roms too.
Click: Start-Programs-Connections and click on quickgps.
Connect to the web either via wifi or through activesync and then click download button in quickgps and the data will update.
What does it mean by valid time?? on the quick gps..
Have to admit it is quite faster.
thats just how long the gps data is valid for, when you update it, it lasts for about 3 days. Be careful with the quickgps options, if you're not on an unlimited gprs data tariff then uncheck the box labelled autodownload when data expires, otherwise you could be in for some hefty bills mate.
The best is to disable the automatic update in QuickGPS.
You only have to sync your Artemis every second day... so the QuickGPS data will always be valid...
Have you tried to change the transmission rate in Parameter/System/GPS/Hardware?
I do not use QuickGPS.
I set the transmission rate to 33600 bauds and my PDA needs less than 2 minutes to lock on.

OK Got my new phone friday had change to test, Now first power up of tomtom (on sd card) took about 2.5 mins, i did not use quickGPS this morning i fired it up, it took 25 seconds to get signal closed down gps reciver, fired back up, 15 seconds, off for about 3.5 - 4 hours signal in 30 seconds so i would say that the GPS was defernetly faulty on my phone, ps my phone is a stock Rom customized to hell (only about 7mb of storage space left on device
Just loaded Tomtom6 on my Orbit after WM6 upgrade and it took an absolute age to lock-onto a GPS signal here too. I did run QuickGPS yeaterday. I think it's an issue with WM6 rather than a fault with your GPS receiver.
HTC Touch HD Seems to have a problem with the way this device is handling GPS.
I have Tom Tom 7 installed and when I try to use Tom Tom 7 it looks for a valid GPS signal and then shows "No GPS Device" It will then find a valid signal and then again shows "No GPS Device" this changes every 10 or 20 seconds.......
If I use quick GPS first before I start Tom Tom (even though Quick GPS hadn't expired) it works fine!!!
Confused!!!
Please help!
Thank you
bit odd, mines fine, the only thing that is probably different is i turned off A-GPS, try turning that off, im assuming you havent been playing with its settings?
try a different GPS enabled program and see if that has the same issues.

I have turned A-GPS off and it has locked on almost immediately and seems to be keeping the signal so far - There's a first!
I'll give it a bit of a test drive tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed...
Can you give me a quick understanding of how A-GPS is supposed to work (or not)
Thank you for your help.

It's supposed to logon to a server provided by your ISP, then use celltower co-ordinates to help make GPS more accurate.
It's basically totally broken on the HD.
To get a fix the GPS receiver needs Ephemeris data. This can be acquired in several ways.
1. Direct from the satellites to the GPS receiver.
2. From a data file (QuickGPS).
3. Transmitted from a cell tower (AGPS).
1. The receiver will get a fix without any assistance but will take a while to acquire sufficient data from at least three satellites to do so.
2. The receiver has much of the positioning data stored in a file so will resolve a fix quickly.
3. The data transmitted from the cell tower will take time to be received so will take slightly longer than 2.
If both (2) and (3) are supplying Ephemeris data, then that data may be similar but not identical. At this point the receiver will have a WTF moment while trying to resolve the fix from differing data, and so will rely more on (1).
Throw into the mix a weak cell signal and possibly a weak GPS signal / reflections and the problem is compounded.
Clearly there is no need for all three, and in many cases it is problematic. Keep the QuickGPS data up to date and switch off the AGPS.
Fully understood,, thanks for making it so understandable.
I dont believe A-GPS has anything to do with it, and I have mine always disabled to avoid any potential network charges for using it.
I did have some initial teething problems with getting GPs working but once I got up-to-date s/w and configured everything correctly, things improved dramatically.
Now GPS synchronisation is usually very quick indeed, with lots of satellites visible. Occasionally it wont synchronise but I find a soft reset of the device always puts this right.
gotta love that WTF moment wen it spazzs out.
Has anyone managed to get their GPS Locking in Google Maps?
I've used QuickGPS to download the database and set Google Maps to use GPS but it never gets a fix.
When in TomTom it knows theres satalites about but doesn't connect to any.
Wondering if I have a duff.... anyone else?
How fast do you connect to satalites?
Have you been out of the house? Some houses really interferre with the connection.
Also, maybe there are some settings in the application you have to change? It should get a fix pretty quick. (first time from 10 sec tot 60, after that, below 10 sec).
So you have updated the quick GPS? Did you (after running tomtom and getting the update for the first time) do a soft reset?

Yeah, did a soft reset after I turned A-GPS on in Advanced Config program. Have tried it in work which usually gets a fix, but will try outdoors, just thought I'd ask the question first
why did you do it on in advanced config? maybe that's where it went wrong. Can't remember me having to put A-GPS on in advanced Config program.
I had the issue in google maps where I could not get a lock. I had to manually configure connectivity to com port 4 in settings.
After that it has worked perfectly. I cannot say if TomTom works or not as I am waiting for my ne SD card to be delivered.
I have however noticed that everytime I sync with active sync QuickGPS always moans it is out of date even thoguh I might have updated it about 1/2 an hour ago.
Its not a major issue as its connected to my PC and just downloads the data again. i'm just ignoring it.
Do not use A-gps.
I have my TP2 fixing with no problem without it: first fix in 55", then always under 10".
Try and use for first fix Quickgps.

Brilliant, turned off A-GPS and loaded TomTom 7.915/Google Maps, got a lock, even indoors.
Spot on, thanks for that!
Turn off A-GPS?
I keep seeing that to make the GPS work better, while also using QuickGPS, the A-GPS should be turned off?
How do I do this?
I have only had the Touch Pro2 for a few days, but have not been able to get a satellite lock in Google Maps even when standing outside away from many buildings.
If it would work better with A-GPS disabled, please tell me how to do this!
Thanks,

Ok, thanks, just going to go try Google Maps again to see if I can get a lock. Maybe I just wasn't outside long enough, or far enough away from buildings last time.
Hopefully I can make GPS work soon
Ok, I just sat outside for about 20 minutes, in the middle of a field, away from any buildings, and was unable to get any GPS lock!
What is wrong here?
I have not touched the GPS Port settings in the control panel, but Google Maps only says Seeking Satellites (0) all the time.
If I do change Google Maps to use COM 4 Baud 4800, it gets worse and says Seeking Satellites (48037656) or some other equally stupid number! At least 0 makes sense, as there are not millions of GPS satellites, only about 20!
Please help, surely there is some way to make GPS work?
Thanks,
DW
Hi all,
AGPS is not currently supported by any UK Networks, so should be turned off if in the UK.
Cheers,
Beasty
i think i ended up setting all mine to com0 but i think it wasn't working originally coz i was sitting in the car and it badly needs a wash (yes that bad). Just stuck it up by window for around 2 mins and it had 8 satellites but i've reset it so often since i last used the gps i wouldn't have been surprised with around 5 mins ... 20 on the other hand is a bit daft
Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with settings somewhere, as in 20 minutes outside it never indicated a single satellite in Google Maps.
I have downloaded the Advanced Configuration tool, and it says that A-GPS is Disabled, which is correct for the UK, so there is nothing to change here.
I have tried changing the Port settings, but I don't know what I should change it too. The Hardware GPS port is blank!
Getting close to giving up for the day, but I really want to get GPS working soon!

Ok, I had the same problems, have you updated Quick GPS? Are you using Google Maps?
If you go into settings and go to External GPS my GPS Program Port os COM4 next page GPS Hardware Port is none and Baud Rate is 4800.
Make sure settings are same and restart phone.
Have you installed anything since getting phone? Might be worth doing hard reset and trying is "out of the box" so to speak.
I could confirm the GPS is working and flawlessly! Much quicker than my old HTC P3600i and the locking is done in the CBD area!
I used the QuickGPS (download the latest update) and then using my GPS software called TechrificWay for Australian (it's a rebrand of NavNGo iGo MyWay 8)
Very happy ^^
(I need to set the TechrificWay application settings to find the GPS unit on COM4 though)
I actually spoke to HTC today and they think it's actually a fault with the hardware, possibly the internal antenna for the GPS is not connected properly.
Slightly annoying as I now need to send it back to get a replacement, or have it repaired, but good in that it's not a problem with me using it! There definitely is something wrong that I can't fix, I just can't wait to get one that works now!
I can get a lock, but get bad lag, and it wonders off course regularly. I wonder if it could be that the radio is not that great for GPS, as many other HTCs have suffered with GPS performance that has gotten better with certain flashed radios?
HTC gave me a generic response of "check these settings" (which were all as they should be in terms of com port and baud rate etc... So I think I'll have to call them if it keeps crapping out on me
(Fortunately) For me it turned out to be a genuine hardware fault causing the GPS to not work. I spoke to HTC and they believe I was the first in the UK to need to get a replacement due to a genuine hardware fault, which I guess is an honor (just a very annoying one!).
Even with the GPS not working for the week that I used it, I loved the handset, can't fault it, and can't wait until tomorrow when I should be receiving my brand new replacement, hopefully with working GPS and no faults!
Thanks for the suggestions here though, I needed to make sure it was a hardware fault before sending it back for a replacement.
I've tested three over 30km trips with Tom Tom 7 installed on the device.
Haven't lost a signal once. So it works fine here in Finland.

I’m using Sygic Aura.
Have a few question. I guess they are pretty general:
Can I change voices in some way?
When I try and navigate to a contact, I have to update its position in the program. Is there a way to get it to understand the contact address right away?
When I’m using Sygic Aura and is logged in to their live service I see pictures of certain locations (they appear as icon sized pictures). Can I preview the in a larger format in some way?
Anyone here have a clue?
I'm having problems with mine. The software installs correctly, but cannot get a GPS fix, which keeps flicking on and off so that the map display constantly jumps between active coloured map and greyed out maps when the GPS signal disconnects. I'm using LeeDroid ROM. I have used the same trial on my Desire HD with no problems (also LeeDroid ROM).
Anyone have any ideas what might be the problem? No point buying the software if I can't get it to work...

That's interesting - it suggests the software is a bit flaky. I left it running whilst I went for a drive, and it did the same for about 40 minutes, and never got a full fix. Worked perfectly on the Desire though. Very strange. I won't be buying the full version at the moment that's for sure!
i got aura fully working on my DHD with fast gps fix
i have read some tips and tricks
install aura apk
reboot
download map
start aura and setup to your needs and likes
reboot
before using it to navigate, let it atleast fix once (stationary) completly
than you should have a fix almost directly(i have, even in my appartment)

BTW in my original post I should have said the trial works on my Desire, and not on the DHD. However, I have tried the above suggestion, and got the whole thing working. It's interesting that you can download the entire world in maps if you want, for a 7 day trial period. need to drive fast then!
I'm not happy with Sygic Aura at all.
First I really liked it and bought it but there are now 'bugs' introduced which renders this door to door gps software as useless.
Since ver2.1x you do not get arrival time (owww small bug according to the support team)
Last couple of weeks I noticed that in some big streets there is no way to insert a house number, euhm excuse me on a road that is about 10km long in the middle of Brussels, not so funny if you have professional contacts and you have to drive in that jungle staring at house numbers.
I just tried another couple of my other addresses and no house number, just unbelievable.
Tried my colleagues Navigon and tried iGO on my WinMo pda and house numbers everywhere, so software bug.
The support says that they are working on it and that it would just take weeks to solve the 'small bugs'.
At this moment I am so angry that I am going to claim my money back via paypal.
I can't even get it to run.
It was all ok for a while and then I flashed a new rom and it started force closing on me after I reinstalled it.
Can't really be bothered with it since the routing was gimp anyway.
I think Sygic have some work to do...
Latest version of Aura is still way to buggy for everyday use.
It has, in my opinion, the best looking UI of most (maybe all) SatNav apps for Android, but it has some serious flaws when it come to giving directions.
I have previously written a post on my views here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874988
Dazultra and I have also done a SatNav comparison:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902264
Please have a look
I tried Aura on my DHD for some time. Did every tric I could find to get a stable GPS based position, but my location keeps jumping around or is lagging behind for sometimes 30 second.
Driving in the city this is unacceptable. I'm missing turns because Aura thinks I'm still 50-100 meters back.
I installed GPS Status and used it to force a cold boot for my GPS. Put it outside on my gardentable for 1 hour (10 min would have been more than sufficient, but I forgot all about it )
No improvement with jumpy and lagging position in Aura.
So now I removed Aura again and thats too bad. Sygic Aura is at this moment the nicest looking and most complete (incl. rather cheap traffic info) nav. system.
On the other hand, I would realy like IGOmyWay or IGO PRIMO on my DHD with full resolution. I threw out my WM (Touch HD) phone some weeks ago on which I had PRIMO including working TMC. That was fantastic, and fully configurable (sys.txt).
Let's see what the next months brings us.....
Sygic Aura on Desire HD
Hi everyone
I've just started using Aura on my Desire HD - impressed with the UI etc, but have a couple of niggles which people may be able to help with...
I've got the paid version 2.1, build R-20021, running on stock Desire HD, android 2.2
Changing voice - I've browsed the files using Astro and I have a female voice (amongst others)... how do i change the settings to use this voice file?
On my version, I can only turn on/off voice navigation, though i can change the different alert/warning sounds.
Re: speed camera/speed limit database... does anyone know how often this is updated? I'm based in UK and a local mainroad is indicating the incorrect speed limit (it changed from 60 -> 50 about 4years ago)...
Thanks in advance

Me too. I drive with constant speed and the cursor freezes or de-accelerate then accelerates... then de-accelerate again... etc.. With navigon and Igo everything is fine! I have DHD with leddroid but It was the same with stock 1.72
I have exactly the same GPS-lagging problem with this program. Really odd though, as you would expect that the program gets the GPS info from android, just like any other navigation program (i.e. google maps).

Hi,
I have a Desire HD with the stock everything, and by OTA it got the 2.2 so I can't temp root now(before you ask).
One mail reason I got a smartphone was for my love of using GPS. And all was working well, but recently, since almost last one month now GPS has almost completely stopped working. Sometimes I am able to see a fix of upto 4 satellites in GPS status, but the lock never happens. I have tried:
1) GPS status with reset and fresh AGPS data
2) disabling wifi/mobile data
3) removing battery and doing factory reset
4) Ensuring there is clear sky and keeping my phone stable for upto half an hour
5) Testing with Google maps
I read the gps.conf may be the common culprit but i see that the same NTP server of north-america is being used in my brother's Wildfire and it works perfectly and gets a lock within 10 seconds! So I would say rooting just to change gps.conf may not also help me out.
What else can i check? If possible I would want not to root and if required at all, would want to do a temp root if possible to save my warranty
Please help me guys to get my GPS back on my 2.2 DHD
I have read almost every forum post/article I could find which may help me with my GPS issue but none helped me and it seems more and more people are getting this issue. The last thing I would want is to send my dear phone to service center lest they take weeks to "fix" it.
So I was experimenting with any clue I could get. AND it seems I may have stumbled upon something here!
I THINK HTC Desire HD can boot into a safe mode which would help me find if there might be abackgrund process/app hurting my GPS. So to accomplish this I rebooted my HTC, and while booting up and kept the HOME button pressed till it booted up and showed the unlock screen.
GPS Status too about 5 mins but found 6 satellites and locked!!!
Not believeing what I was seeing, I started google maps, and within 5 seconds it locked on to 10 meter accuracy!!
2 questions now
1) Had I actually booted into safe mode, if not what happened here
2) If this was really about something interfering with my GPS, then which server/app is it? How to investigate?
I went into running services and found these running:
astrid backupservice
jbedvmnorunning service
calendar obexservice
htcsense immediatemodeservice
htcsense dashboardsvc
google cloud to device
google messaging
media
sound sdmsvc
cspeoplesync
google maps networklocation
market alarm
mail easappsync
touch input svc
Other 71 mb in 4, avail 247+241 in 43
I will try to find next day what services are running in regular boot, if gps stops working again
If this works for anybody else too, please comment as then we can try investigate together
Well, it turned out that my GPS working was more of a fluke. Didn't work again after that :'(
