As you may know, HTC have just released the kernel source code, and i've been having a play.
Nothing massively exciting yet, but if you want your kernel to feature...
- Additional filesystems (EXT4, NFS, CramFS, SquashFS 4.0)
- Freshly compiled tun.ko module
- CompCache 0.5.4 support
- Required iptables functionality for DroidWall
...then you can install this package over the top of the latest MCR.
This is pretty much untested at the moment, so Nandroid backup first (of course), and i'm taking requests for future improvements. This is seperate from the main MCR thread for now simply because of it's untested nature!
I'd like to add...
- Port to 2.6.29 kernel
...but as I say this is just an early first-stab at a custom kernel. I thought i'd put it out there as I know many people like to run EXT4 on their A2SD partitions.

I'd love to help test this however I'm new to Android so when you say MCR I assume you mean the latest Modaco Rom? So I should install MCR then install this? Sorry and thanks, looking forward to giving it a go
will this have CDMA support by any chance for the CDMA hero?

Well may be it is possible to make clean Android OS available for HTC Hero since kernel sources are released? With no Sense UI etc.

I dont understand all the people not wanting sense UI
if you dont want it, go into settings--------manage applications-----find touch flo and clear defaults....
The next time you press the home button, just press launcher and make it your default home screen.
There you have it...
Sorry Paul for going slightly off topic
Some people do not want it because they find it heavy.
By using the clear defaults method you only visually disabling it, but in the background the sense ui processes are still running.

Ever heard about Paul's Rosie remover? I think what people want is to get features of e.g. Cyanogens work in a ROM, and the ability to modify. In fact if you remove Rosie, add some vanilla android apps and change the Hero drawables in the framwork.apk you'll get a "vanilla" looking and working kind of ROM.

8. Test, Test, Test!
Once again, Thank you for your continued support.

I haven't tried Benham's build without the changes, so I couldn't tell you.
The first blindingly obvious difference is that all apps show in the market.
Other than that, it should be slightly quicker right from the go... but give it 2-3 days, and I'll HUGELY improve the speed.
Updates should all be no-wipe, too
Great Work, Can't wait for the speed tweaks!

So guys, I didn't want you to wait more days so I am just releasing current state. So far this build seems to be the one I will work on as it runs fast.
My wife's sitting in my neck last days cause I was sitting too much in front off my netbook. Anyone wanna help me?
As I said it runs very smooth. Just try it for your own and give me feedback
Important:
- This release runs fast but keep in mind: When first booting it. Don't touch your device the first 10mins after it has booted into Android cause it will execute a script and do optimizations and therefore be slow. Next boots will be fast and also device will be fast.
If anyone would provide me with Linpack Benchmarks I would be grateful
You are responsible for everything what you do with your device. Don't blame me for not reading instructions carefully. It works when you know what you are doing. read thread posts
Installation:
Like the last EXT2-builds: Use my Haret-Paket. You may download latest on my Homepage.
Installation Instructions

Video which shows how I run LinPack and get a result of 3.6MFLOPS. When overclocking I get 4.04MFLOPS:
Video
What has changed in the latest Build:
- Removed uneccessary apps
- Replaced Launcher with ADW Launcher (screenshots will follow)
- GPS works now
- Updated apns-conf.xml
- some other smallies
- you will have to use an app called "Quick Boot" for correct powerdown / reboot (go into Market and download it for free -> will be included in next release)
Known bugs:
Setting ringer volume only works with up/down buttons when changing ringer
Camera does not work
Battery draining
Google Mail ?
Reboot procedure (see Hint above)
some smallies (please let me know in Bug + Wishlist)
This should work on your device. Diamond Users get it running. Anyone get it working here? It's based on XDAndroid rootfs + kernel. So it should work. Maybe an experienced user wanna try it?
You may follow main-thread in Diamond-section of XDA-Developers
Wow...
Do you have some screenshots?
i apologize but i'm a bit confused.
whats the difference between your build and any other 1.6 build?
i see you made it an ext2 instead of a sqsh but whats different in yours than the original 1.6?
as far as i know the development on the 1.6 is at the same place as the 2.1. same features minus those found in 2.1 and not in 1.6.
I'd be curious as to what differentiates this build as well... perhaps I'll just have to wait and see for when you post it & I can run it and see for myself...
I am rather curious, but you should have perhaps waited till you had more time to introduce a better post rather than confusing some people ;P.. (such as me!) Did you create a proper bootloader for the Touch Pro devices or what? Haha.. Sorry, I'm rather curious!
Well using partition means you don't have to edit the System.sqsh to add apps and do modifications, Looking forward to it!
Re: [UPCOMING][Neopeek's ANDROID DONUT 1.6] ext2-filesystem - NoSquash
The ext2 can be made very easily from our sqsh systems. There is a program called staysafe that will do it for you in android. There is a thread for it somewhere on xda with all the needed files. It says that it is for cupcake and donut but I've used it in eclair without problems. Using rootexplorer, I needed to change to an ext2 system to get root accesss writeable. Worked very nicely. Only downside is the ext2 system is huge compared to sqsh. I want to say the ext2 was aroung 500mb.

Hi all,
just wanted to let you know that i succeeded in putting Android on EXT2 of internal memory. SO THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU AND YOUR SD_CARD, TOO! IT WILL ALSO WORK ON THE OTHER DEVICES LIKE TOPAZ RAPHAEL ETC.
I will later explain how to get it running and offer the complete package for download. I will need some hours, though cause I am at work now. So you will have to be patient. Tomorrow is my birthday, so don't expect too much support. Only thing I can say: This build's gonna rock your phone and ist extremely fast!!!
First build is based upon Android Donut 1.6
I will contribute a Froyo build some days later, though this will be just for testing and is instable / not productive
I don't know if this is going to be on top or anyone is going to make this sticky. But the original thread is created at DIAMOND-Forum. So beware of cross posts and please post your comments to original thread here. On the other hand: If no one posts then this thread won't be up any more. What about the mic, is it working? Thanks for your help to the hero community. Are you going to return to us?
This happens because some of the libs (HTC + android) are meant to be dl-opened and some are prelinked.
You can always play around with ldd to find which are dynamic and which aren't.
libaudio / libaudioeq / libhardware_legacy tend to cause problems.
Touch screen is now working, was kernel related. But proprietary libs are still not getting linked correctly...

I have build it from source yea and got booted up. Although I am having a lot of issues with FC's. I used the sapphire tree with edits and used the 2.1 Hero proprietary drivers to compile it correctly.

in fairness RaduG compiled Cyan 5.0.7 from Source. He's been on holiday since before Froyo sources were released (AND RaduG is 17!)
But definately, Lox is one of the forefront devs to have looked at Hero, along with Paul, MoDaCo who prefers to deal with Sense than Cyan
Im quite looking forward to trying this. Thank you for your hard work!
it doesn´t mind for me if the camera is not working because i do not use it, but only if you can´t solve it, i think that you can release it and then make an update.zip fix for the camera like other devs.
but whitout any hurry, this is only my opinion.
i can´t wait to flash this.
good job man.
It must be fun to know that xda and twitter get hammered by people waiting for a download link . Great effort, Lox. Again you start the route to a great variety of Froyo Roms on our not yet old-fashioned Heroes
Thanks for making your source tree public and let others benefit from your findings. Nice stroke.
Things you might want to test: (you asked on twitter)
- Proximity sensor
- Brightness sensor
- Location searching through WLAN
- Gmail sync
- Full market access
- Alarm clock
- su (root)
BTW: Can't wait to modify my Exchange password policy removal tool to work on Froyo. If you need assistance in testing, let me know
just a question, will we be able to flash it tonight?
NEBULAE ROOTED ROM BASED ON
OFFICIAL HTC WWE ÉCLAIR 2.1 (RUU)
***ONLY FOR GSM HERO***
Description:
This ROM is just another ROM like most others out there... Yes, I'm late in the game and it does not have much more than most ROMs but that was not the intention either. It's also not this ROM's intention to compete with any other ROMs. This is just something I did for myself (that's why you can find some unusual features) which I decided to share cause some people might like my simple and basic changes.
My work is based in two other ROMs, MoDaCo from Paul O'Brien and VillainROM from TeamVillain. I respect their work and thank them for their hard work. Some things were literally copied from their ROMs to mine, but I give credit where credit is due; if you find something that you think it was copied, that's because it probably was, but I'm not doing this to take credit for their work.
Features:
Based on Official HTC WWE Éclair 2.1 Update (RUU)
Rooted with Superuser 2.3.6.1 by ChainsDD
Missing locales from the official HTC update
en_PT, en_FI, fr_BE, fr_CH, pt_PT, nb_FI, da_FI, sv_FI
Fully deodexed for theming, hacking and extra space
Added Click'n'Drag to rearrange screens in Rosie/Sense
Long and comprehensive list of updated APNs
Added Dropbear support (SSH Server)
Added support for dalvik2cache script
Tweaked low memory management
Disabled boot animation sound
Included Linux tools:
BusyBox v1.15.3
SQLite v3.5.9
Bash v4.1
Nano v2.0.9
Included applications:
3D Gallery v1.1.30682 (Froyo port)
Removed applications:
HTC Footprints
HTC Stocks
Teeter
How to install:
Wipe everything:
Data
Dalvik-cache
Battery Stats
Rotate Settings
Flash ROM via recovery mode.
Flash Radio via recovery mode (the phone will reboot twice, do not interrupt the process at any moment).
Reboot the system once after the initial boot.
I suggest to always reinstall the radio after flashing any ROM, I've had GPS problems in the past for not doing so. Either flash the one below or the one that suits you/your network better.

Patch for Nebulae ROM v0.1
NEBULAE ROM PATCH
***ONLY FOR GENERIC/DEODEX ROMS***
Description:
There were a couple of things I wanted to include in my ROM above but couldn't because of software limitations (more specifically, signatures). This patch allows that and you also have the choice to flash it or not.
This patch can probably be used on another ROMs (for the HTC Hero of course) if you like but I will not provide any support there. Just make sure the ROM is deodex or it will probably lead to unexpected results.
Features:
Removed shortcuts from Launcher:
Call History
Learn More
Phone
Search People
Settings
Setup Wizard
Removed vibration from the Calculator and Dialer apps
Fixed graphical glitches and unreadable colors in a tabbed interface
Example of original interface: image
Example of fixed interface: image

Too bad for me it doesnt have footprints as i use it a lot,but you cant satisfy everyone and as you said it was build for your needs.
Welcome aboard, hope to see more work from you.
You can easily push it back (along with the widget) to the phone if you want. Of course, only if you really find this ROM more useful than the one you're currently using, otherwise don't bother
Nazgulled,
Could you please upload the freshly new Google Maps 4.4 only? I'd like to update mine to 4.4 but it seems certain apps are missing from Market for me right now, including Shazam, LauncherPro and etc.
Please?
Nevermind, the direct download is here: http://db.tt/0Mtbc3
Finally an Official WWE rom with locales fixed! Was waiting for a en_PT option for a long time without keyboard installations and tweaks!
Will try it!
Many thanks!

I had released 2 versions already that supported the same, on based on the OTA, the other based on the RUU

That needs to be supported in the kernel and I don't know how to do it...
I have 63.18.55.06PH_6.35.15.14 radio version.
Does 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.11 suites better for our country?
Thanks in advance

PH? Where did that one come from? I'm not sure that's newer though because PH comes before of PU and radios are normally versioned like that...
I'm not sure, I'm using 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.11 as that one came from the official update and haven't tested any others. The only way to tell is to keep using both for a long period of time and take some conclusions...
Found this now:

PH and PU are the same. Some Heros report the radio with an H and others with an U.

So, there's "2 new radios" right now and I have them both posted on the front page. The "PH" you're using is basically the one I posted for "orange users", which ends in 14.
Seriously, I don't know which one is better, i'm just using the first one and haven't really tested the other... If you do test both and find out the .14 is better than the .11, let me know
I have seen this .11 radio in Denmark. (use .14 myself, no probs)
On an officiel HTC update.

Think I found it on Villain's place as a new rom.
Think its working well, just don't know about battery because I'm always using the phone and charging it a lot.

It will probably be almost the same I'd think... But I could be wrong.
