Hi All
I have recenty upgraded to an Orbit from a Mini S.
I have noticed that whilst using the standard file explorer, navigating around the Windows folder is really slow, takes around 20-30 seconds just to open the folder.
The mini s was loads quicker.
I may be answering my own question here but will the wizard filesystem cache (found on wizard wiki) registry changes also quicken up this operation ?
Thanks
Installed Total Commander now all works great. Wow so many replies.
Can anyone recommend a decent file explorer app that is touch-friendly (most important attribute!), but other then Resco? I downloaded the Resco trial and really liked it, but I can't bring myself to spend 30 bucks on an app that's a file explorer.
I reckon it's well worth it, I really like it, especially with the built in support for zip/rar, FTP/Network and registry explorer
Have you tried Total Commander? You need the tcmdpocketarm.cab found on that site.
I just switched from Total Commander to Resco File Explorer and to be honest, I like Resco much more, but Total Commander has always worked fine..and it's freeware!

Total Commander was included in the last ROM I flashed, but it's definitely not very finger-friendly!
So far it sounds like I should just bite the bullet and spend the cash on Resco.

You can make Total Commander a bit more finger-friendly by making the font size bigger (just go to Show->About/Settings->Change Font). I have it set to 12, which makes it quite easy to use with your finger...
Try GSFinder+. It's supposed to be a freeware alternative to Resco, finger-friendly and all that stuff.
I use Resco Explorer as well. It's been my file explorer of choice for quite a few years now. Well worth the money if you ask me!
I use file explorer extension, really useful app. You can set up different views, easy access tree at the top (via drop down). Has useful things like when right clicking an exe you can create a shortcut in the programs folder and such things. Definitely a must have for me!

I'm also a long time RESCO user but must admit I bought their RESCO utility pack which is a bundle of applications which I believe is better value.
I'm also a Resco File Explorer User. 30 bucks seems to be a lot of money, but then again, it's a tool that is being used very frequently, so well worth the money imho.
I use this one.
well there is another one i used for symbian called x-plore, cost something around 8$ or application start-up and close coundown if you dont wanna pay i think. works fine in wm, shortcuts, quite nice piece of software.
check here

Otherwise use GSlide. Very useful and you could get it here.. .

What is this exactly? Any screenshots or descriptions anywhere?
Thanks.
Thanks for all the replies folks. I think I'm just going to buy Resco and at least I know I'll be happy with it.

Its the only file explorer i use!
I have a 16gb Sandisk card. Resco Explorer reads it in a snap. I have a lot of html reference docs on it, so there are upwards of 90K small, medium and large files on the card (in about 6.5gb of space). Anytime the stock MS file explorer is called into play it takes 1 - 2 minutes to open any directory on the card. I even tried installing the File Explorer extension cab but that made no difference. Anyone had a similar problem, or have a fix? I'd like to use PIE to serve as my default browser because it will open directories from an html link (using file explorer), whereas NetFront can't, but the slowness makes it an unacceptable option. I wish there was a way to have any of the browsers use Resco as the default file system explorer.
How about opening files in the ROM? Is it equally slow? If not, I suspect that has something to do with your SD card.
Here's the thing:
This 16Gb card is a Class 2. Doing the same basic things such as navigating the card in Explorer works fine on my iPaq 210. In fact it's downright zippy at it.
I copied the contents to a Class 4 8 Gb card and it is still just as slow on the TP2, zippy on the iPaq.
Upon starting up File Explorer (fexplore) it takes forever to read the card. After the first time it's tolerable to move around in the card but still somewhat slow. But once I close fexplore and reopen it the same slowness results in the initial read.
It's the same in IE when I use it to read a directory in my HTML menu. Because it utilizes fexplore for that function it takes forever.
Has anyone else seen this sort of slowness with MS Explorer (fexplore) on their phone?
I've tried HouMing's Explorer Extension and that doesn't help. I'm wondering if this could have something to do with a failed attempt on my part to install PIE Plus just after I flashed this ROM a couple of weeks ago. I uninstalled it, and there appear to be no traces of it in the registry, but this behavior by PIE and MS Explore is strange. I've been using PPCs and PDAs forever and I've never seen the likes of this sort of slowness to read a card. And Resco works with no problems or slowness.
Curious... I see a lot of good programs on here named over an over but there's also **** I've come across and haven't seen many people mention..
I see a lot of SPB mobile shell talk, and its GREAT software.. also heard about PointUI (wasnt a fan though)
But I never heard about Winterface? And so far I like it better then both.. maybe because I was used to SPB an this is new but I'm lovin it, it's a simple interface, runs real smooth, and does everything I want..
Other programs I heard rarely or just missed the memo on..
BeeJive IM
Panoramic MoTweets
SK Tools
Speed Booster
UCWEB
Opera Mini (through java)
Task Facade
I don't use task facade now that I been using Winterface.. didn't with SPB either, but it was nice with TouchFLO
Any others ya'll have come across but never really were told about?
And anyone using Opera 10 beta? I got it but it seems to close before I get to do much in the browser, I'm guessing cause it's beta it must not be completely compatible? The whole interface and options are WAY better then the 9.5 one that comes with NFSFans ROM.. personally the 9.5 runs slow for me I'm forced to use opera mini through java its the smoothest browser I've ever used but it doesn't do videos (not even sure if opera 9.5 does? I know the explorer that came with the ROM does but I don't like that either really..)
Kinoma Play- slightly memory intensive, but it's my favorite music player. I'm still on Vin's lightning fast 23506 ROM so I don't really miss any of the memory it uses.
Opera 10 beta is really nice(I haven't had it crash??). I just miss the zoom bar occasionally, but I've just started using the d-pad to select links instead of zooming down to where I could click them. It has it's own ideas sometimes on how to deal with long or complex websites, but overall I enjoy it's aesthetics. If you're having trouble with it go back to opera's website and make sure you have the latest release.
I use Bing more than I thought I would. I really like its phone book/yellow page functions.
I tried using Task Facade a while back when I was running NFSFAN v12 or so and at that time I thought it was to slow and laggy. Now that I'm running Vin's speed demon 23506 ROM I have started using Task Facade and I really like it. There is almost no lag and with it mapped to the camera button I don't miss having HTC's Task Manager at all.
yeah i had used it with NFSFan and it worked fine, task facade was a great program
ill re-install opera 10 im not sure what it is, like i said tho maybe it isnt compatible with NFSFans ROM.. cause he has the 9.5 that comes with it, probably for good reason
I'm liking opera mini. It seems to load a lot faster then opera 9.7
Yeah unbelievably faster.. I do like Opera 10 beta though
skyfire 1.5 is my fave
Showcase Task Manager.
Manila 2d like interface. EXTREMELY nice and fingerfriendly.
also. fartmachine. (immature there) and pocket noise (both xda+ppc devs included). extremely amusing.
Does anyone have any good programs involving things like...
Stocks?
Stock information/updates?
Are there any alternative web browsers worth looking for other than these...?
UCWEB
Skyfire
Opera
Iris
Netfront
Anyone know of any good skins for Winterface? (the original is the best, the others have to big of icons for me)
I'm tryin think of more things... hmm..
Anyone have any programs they've always wondered about and never came across?
I just flashed Vins V_4 and have been using the M2DC manila customizer by Mpenguin14 and its a great program for anyone using M2D.
I like your initiative. Some titles are not so popular because not every developer pays for the marketing. And most users buy what they are told to.
Regarding your list and internet browsers I've seen an interesting one, I think it was called touch browser, very similar to the Android one.
I like:
Thumbcal
G-Alarm
Resco contacts
All three greatly improved WM funtions and make them more finger friendly.
Another program that greatly improves the "finger-friendliness" is SMS-Chat by Vito Tech. The stock SMS for WM has never been very good, which is something I hope changes with WM7, but in the meantime this is a great substitute and has some really nice skins that you find right here on XDA.
im a huge fan of SOTI pocket controller. Granted its not exactly PPC software, but it really is nice for when im working on my desktop/laptop and need to access phone files or send out a text.
Or when tinkering with it in general : )
S2P
TCPMP
Advanced Config
PocketCM Contacts
PCM Keyboard (much lighter than Fingerkeyboard 2.1)
Gen.Y DualBOOT
CleanRam
PHM Regedit
Notepad
File Explorer Extension
A good Android build
I use a lot more stuff, but these are really the essentials for my Vogue (IMHO).
I was using PCM keyboard, recently switched to zoomboard before i flashed to android, seemed to work a touch better for my big dumb fingers.
These make WinMo tolerable for me:
Windows Mobile 6.5.3+
ArkSwitch Task Manager (for 6.5.3+)
PhonEx Dialer (for 6.5.3+) -- sooo much better than any dialer out there, including the HTC GSM Dialer. You get a great full-screen predictive dialer, with smooth contact swipe scrolling. Only contact manager where swipe scrolling works on the vogue (without me accidentally dialing someone). Also it preserves the stock WM dialer for phone codes, and is fast! Comes with slide-2-answer.
EzInput 2.1 / Swype
Things I hate / want to die:
Going through three screens to acknowledge or answer a text message
The above, for missed calls
Internet browser -- None work well, Opera Mobile 10.5u seems the best, but I much prefer the Android browser
Battery life is the only reason I haven't switched fully to android yet.
You always hear a lot of talk about Swype, but you rarely ever hear about the similar, but much smoother SlideIT keyboard. I've used Swype and Shapewriter, but SlideIT is probably my favorite keayboard.
I'm a big fan of SPB Radio. Best app on WinMo.
A great app for music is nanogroove, you can stream your music and custom playlists from the grooveshark.com website. I also use SPBMobile Shell and zoomboard. All excellent software.
hi guys!
is it possible to improve the multitasking performance? I often use twitter (moTweets) and Opera and Palringo simultainously, which unfortunatly always causes an automatic shutdown of all the applications. Running just one app at the same time is quite annoying. Is it possible to optimize this? (ROM: DeepShining, Manila 2.5)
thanks for your thoughts!
Opera 10 is a RAM killer.
Try Advanced Config 3.3 (you should be able to find it here or if you google it), go to HTC Task Manager - AutoKill - Disabled. HTC Task Manager will stop automatically close tasks to free up memory. Or decrease the default threshold. This may cause your device to get laggy or even freeze, but it worth a try.

Hi, I tried all kind of tweaks, but nothing really works. As soon as I open mail or a twitter client, the browser shuts down itself quickly. Maybe there is a specific rom, that is very handy for multitasking?
Uninstall opera 10
I don't know why people insist on using that version but it effectively renders your tp2 a non multitasking device with all the resources it eats up. 9.7 or even 9.5 is way better for the tp2 (and faster imo). version 10 seems to have been written for a desktop type of device for the amount of ram it consumes.
People are delusional and want to use it thinking its good. but its really not.
I´m using Opera Mobile 10 beta2 without any issues, yes it eats RAM, but I have plenty so no lags here.
I have tested several browsers and Opera is the best so far, so it´s ok if needs more RAM to run

I dont have a problem running opera 10 either. Its when I try to run Opera 10 and something else that I run into issues. Apperently you and I are using the same device with the same specs. I did everything suggested in your opera thread and still it eats up around 90% of the resources. If I try to open say two tabs and another program, thats when the memory issues begin. Also, it seems enourmously slower than the previsous version even on wifi. The load bar seems to sit at 50% for ever and a day while the same site on 9.7 is loaded fully in a few seconds. I firmly beliive 10 comes with a placebo effect built in.
The UI is nice, but the browser is not for a rhodium by any means. Not unless you want to turn off tf3d or run JUST the browser.
Same here, using 10 b2, no problems at all, is my main browser. Also using SPB MobileShell or Titanium helps freeing memory.
I'm using Opera 10 beta 2 and palringo both at the same time no issues, also pocketwiter with no issues so possibly is it the twitter app that is causing the problems?
I m having the same issue with both 9.7 and 10 beta 2. I cannot let Opera and IE both running even when the autokill is set to off.
I think it's not the opera's problem cause I cannot let TVUplayer and core player running together either.
TVUPlayer should be running in the background dealing with the stream data while the core player is playing in the foreground but TVU always got killed in the background.
I think TP2 doesn't have enough ram for multitasking when manila is running.
I'm fairly certain this is a ROM problem. I've experienced the same thing with all ROMs that have Sense 2.5. My applications kept getting autokilled.
This happens rarely with WinMo 6.5+Sense 2.1 ROMs. But sometimes, it does and it's very irritating.
This is one of the main reasons why I've "downgraded" back to stock WinMo 6.1 ROM. My applications never gets autokilled now. I've consistently done the following things simultaneously with no problems:
-Listen to music using the Music tab in TF3D
-Browse web using Opera 9.5
-Chat using MSN Messenger
-All while having the following applications opened: Messaging, Notes, Resco File Explorer, Calculator, Excel Mobile

+1 on the stability and smoothness of 6.1! I honestly can't remember the last time I ran into a memory shortage, at least not to the point where anything autokilled. I often leave opera (10b3) open just to save myself the initial load time whenever I want to look something up real quick (which is often), and it's never kept me from having all the other stuff running that I usually have open:
WMP
Total Commander
File Explorer
messaging (always with active use)
calculator
and often google maps as well
The point of all this is...the cause of the issue for the OP (and many others) is just the resource consumption of the later models of WM and TF3D~Sense
How many of these threads really must exist?
It's PROCESSES, not ram... Unless you guys are doing something asinine, my Tilt 2 right now has 88M ram free, I never see less than 40M free, and I run a LOT of stuff, PocketWeather, GPSToday, a cell location upload program, plus FlexMail, Palringo, S2U2, all the while doing stuff like Twitter, FIM, PIE, Opera, whatever.
What gets you is processes. Look at some tool which will show you how many current running processes there are, I'd think any task manager can, I use MemMaid. 31 is the maximum for Windows Mobile, and I have heard when it exceeds 28 it starts killing.
My Tilt 2 had something like 25 processes at boot at first, with a few programs installed.. I had to do a bit of tweaking, but now I have it down to 22 with all of the above normal stuff running, and now I rarely have a problem with programs exiting.

Are you sure about this.. i donth think it's the case.. it is because of the memory.. because i use fdcsoft task manager.. it shows that there are 15 processes running... but still if i open opera, palringo, gsplayer, sms and a new tab .. programs will start closing .. so if you calculate i only have 15 + 4 processes.. it's waaaay less than 31.. are there any hidden processes which i am not seeing??.. which task manger are you suing to get the no of processes??
I've also noticed that under 40 MB RAM, Opera Mobile won't even start... currently I have 17 processes runing in fdc (two of tem being Opera and fdc - just opened, so basically only 15)

15 seems very low with programs running, so I'm thinking you aren't seeing the total number of processes. As I said, I use MemMaid
I use DF Task Manager & Memmaid Both have different benefits.
I also have the same issues. If I load Opera it closes everything else.
With nothing running except Manilla I onlky have 60Mb left of the original RAM. I have experimented with SPB. I if use this I start with 90Mb free.
I have tried all sorts of Manila tweaks and memory hacks to free up memory from manilla.
Nothing works.
Looks like I might have to find a ROM with 6.1 instead of 6.5.5 .
Just did a test. nothing but WM6.5, Manilla & Opera 10 running. 18Mb left. something wrong with this picture!!!
Try changing the pagepool to like 12. But you're going to have to do this before a flash. Read up on it if your interested.
