Navigating Windows Folder - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hi All
I have recenty upgraded to an Orbit from a Mini S.
I have noticed that whilst using the standard file explorer, navigating around the Windows folder is really slow, takes around 20-30 seconds just to open the folder.
The mini s was loads quicker.
I may be answering my own question here but will the wizard filesystem cache (found on wizard wiki) registry changes also quicken up this operation ?
Thanks
Installed Total Commander now all works great. Wow so many replies.

A bunch of questions...

Hi,
I've been using my Artemis for 2-3 weeks now and i absolutely love it, even more so after installing Meschle's Rom (thanks for that one).
I'm always discovering new things to do with my artemis and unfortunately in doing so i also discover things i can't figure out for myself. So i hope some of the forum veterans can provide me with an answer to any of the following questions:
1. I installed PocketGba and it runs very well for the most part. But when trying to run games like Fire Emblem GBA it says 'insufficient memory'. I've been reading through a lot of pages concerning this and discovered it has to do with memory allocation. The question is: how can i safely relocate memory to play these bigger kind of games?
2. I set up my Outlook work account on my Artemis and i was wondering how i could change the setting as to receive the mail on my storage card.
3. Which of these applications is better than the built-in calendar: Agenda Fusion, SPB Diary or SBSH? I would just like a better organizer for appointments and such. If i install one of these, will there be any conflict problems with the present organizer? Can i transfer existing appointments to the new organizer?
4. How can I change my contacts as to display only contacts stored on the phone (no longer double displaying with sim contacts)?
5. How can i add and save words to the XT9 dictionary? Adding isn't the problem here, but keeping them for future use is.
6. In trying to re-install TomTom Navigator 6 some strange things have happened. As it turns out, TomTom didn't install correctly and is spread among a couple of folders. Can someone tell me if it's save to delete these folders and try installing Navigator again?
Showing under My Device: Program Files > Navigator: contacts, itn, logging, voices, navigator, ttnavigator.
Showing under Storage Card: My Documents > TomTom : empty folder
Showing under Storage Card: ttnavigator.
Can i safely remove all these files manually? If i want to re-install TT6...can i just put it on my storage card and run the program from my storage card?
Also, how do i create shortcuts on my device to programs stored on my storage card?
7. I'm using the installed Java Midlet manager Jbed and have thus far installed Opera Mini on it. I'm also trying to download games to my phone. For example: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I tried everything but i just can't seem to download the game to my Artemis. Nor from the eamobile site, nor through vodafone live portal. Any help here would be greatly appreciated (also indicating which phone version of these kind of games is best suited to the Artemis, for example Nokia N series).
That's about it for now ))))
Thanks!!
Excellent questions. I thought I'd be able to help, but I'm kinda stumped on most of them. I'm also using a ROM from Meschle, and I'm using Agenda fusion for the home page. It's free, simple, and very customizable. Don't know about the others.
I haven't used the GBA emulator yet, but I am using a full Nintendo emulator and games run fine on my device. I'm thinking your memory issue is a problem with the settings or you my just have to find another emulator.
And with TomTom, I've never had a problem installing that program. How are you installing it? Cab file? I have a cab file I can email you if your interested. I just bought the software and copied the cab file from the CD. Works everytime.
re tom tom cab file
Hi I have the tom tom cab file, but only have the map for part of ni can anyone mail me the map for the uk?
Cheers all

Heres answer to your question 2 and 4.
UnShow Contacts from Sim
HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone\ShowSim
Normally the value is 1! Set this to 0 and soft reset!
-------
Change the location of email and attachments
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MAPI\PropertyPath =
"\Storage Card\Mail" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MAPI\AttachPath =
"\Storage Card\Mail\Attachments" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
To return to the original location:
Just simply delete these Registry settings (since neither is included by default).
----------
Change the location of Temporary Internet Files
When browsing the web, pages and images are saved in the 'Temporary Internet Files' location. You can change this location to, for example, your Storage Card:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Cache = "\Storage Card\cacheie" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
Thanks nm8.
I am using the Touch lite rom from Meschle. And I don't think it comes with a registry editor. Is it worth getting Resco or is there a better, free alternative? I was looking at Schap's advanced config tool. But i'm guessing it doesn't allow registry changing. It does seem to allow to disable displaying sim contacts. Don't know if it also allows for changing the storage of e-mail and attachments to storage card.
All in all i think it's probably safer for a newbie to get the advanced config tool instead of trying to change registry settings, right?
The only thing i find strange is that Meschle indicates that the total free program memory should be 25MB. I have only installed a couple of extra programs (on storage card) and my device says it only has 16.9 MB free.
After disabling Cube and soft resetting device I gained 22MB free program memory. I can now load and run Fire Emblem on PocketGba. Unfortunately the device freezes when a battle is about to take place. Seems like the Artemis isn't really equipped to play these kinds of games. Same thing happens when changing video display and such. Shame. If anyone knows of a solution...
Disabled the cube, soft resetted my device and gained 22 MB free program memory. Now the PocketGba runs Fire Emblem untill a battle starts and then it just freezes my device. Strange. This game only needs 16MB free program memory. I have been playing with video settings and such and it still freezes. Seems like the Artemis isn't really equipped to run this...
@shawndh:
I've read everywhere that PocketGba is the best GBA emulator out there. It can theoretically load 32MB cartridge files according to memory state. As i stated above, I only have around 16.9 MB free. So it really is a question of memory allocation. Which emulator are you using and does it allow you to play any GBA cartridge?
About TT6. Thanks for offering the cab. But i would like to know first if it is safe to delete the files i mentioned in my topic start post.
Anyway thanks everyone for the input. Keep it coming this way )
Registry editor is available on this ROM, its part of the TaskManager
Start->Program->Accessories->TaskManager
Go to Menu->Create RegEdit Shortcut.
Regedit is then available from the Drop Down arrow in top right hand corner.

Pocket Informant is excellent replacement for outlook although its not free, not tried the ones you mentioned. I believe most of the replacements use the same database to store the appt/task/etc and therefore all you appointments will automatically be available.
Thanks premkang. Unfortunately the Task Manager on the lite version is 2.0 instead of 2.8. The 2.0 version doesn't allow to enter the registry.
About PocketGba: I disabled the cube, performed a soft reset et voila 22MB of free program memory. I can now run Fire Emblem, but whenever a battle is about to take place the Artemis freezes. I'm guessing the Artemis isn't really equiped to run these kinds of games smoothly (even after altering video settings). If someone else has it working, let me know.
hey mate, don't know if any of this'll help, but...
with regard to your gaming problem have you seen the change pool size thread? allows you to change the memory pool size so that you can allocate more memory for larger applications (but a less memory for fast system operation) and vice versa. i gather, running vanilla, you want the quick system so it might not be of any help;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=323885&highlight=change+page+pool
also your tt6 query, i don't like it being installed on the device without the option to install on the storage card. i cut all files on the device that you mentioned and placed them in prog files on the storage (same as they would be in prog files on device). i then copied the tomtom navigator.exe (the one with the red hands 2.4mb) and in windows folder paste shortcut in;
1.AppButtons - to allow button config for tt, if required.
2.StartMenu/Programs - so that it shows up in the programs menu.
this frees up 2.5mb on the device. i dont know about which files can be deleted though. all i have on my storage card are;
main storage card;
Western_Europe...map - (file)
Voices (file)
Zip (postcodes ((file))
ttnavigator.bif (331b)
Program Files/Navigator within this are
contacts (file)
itn (file)
logging (file)
voices (file)
ttnavigator.bif (331b)
CurrentMap.dat (45b)
navigator.cfg (252b)
TomTomNavigator.exe (2.4mb)
DATA.CHK (2.6mb)
had it running for a while and all is fine. sorry if this is f*$king long winded, i'm a bit pissed and a novice, so i don't know if it's any help at all!!
good luck mate
also with regard to your query for xt9 saving ive started a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1767135#post1767135, handy idea - like it

Anyone running Opera Mini?

Hi I was thinking of switching from Omnia to TP2 and use Opera Mini all the time due to its speed. Had anyone tested it on the TP2, wondering if the different screen res makes it differcult to read due to size or should it be better.
I just installed it in JBlend. The legibility is OK, although the default font size is a little small. The main problem is that opening or closing the keyboard requires you to restart JBlend, which is a royal pain in the neck as I often want to switch between landscape and portrait mode when I'm browsing.
This problem seems to exist with all JBlend apps.
Install JBed, works like a champ. Will thoroughly recommend it. Much better than JBlend.
On Jbed what is the font size like?
Are there no problems with keyboard as described with jblend?
I just installed the latest JBed and OperaMini now loads fine. The font is pretty small, but readable (by me, at least).
Does anyone know how to create a direct menu shortcut to a specific JBed application (e.g. OperaMini, GoogleMail, etc)? (i.e. without having to launch Jbed then select the app you want to launch). I'd also like to assign a different icon to each application, so that I can tell them apart purely from the icon.
Sorry for the obvious question: JBed? JBlend?
Are these some sort of Java runtimes that one must install on a WinMo device?
There's no Java ME edition in WinMO 6.1 by default?
I don't get why you wouldn't just use opera mobile which comes with it
Because until Opera Mobile 9.7 with Turbo ships, mini opera is several times faster with proper settings.
For the past 3 years I've used almost nothing but Opera Mini myself, instead of the full fledged browsers available (I have bought Opera Mobile as well and a Webkit browser).
It's just so much faster due to Turbo caching and fits my needs.
I suspect many others are in the same boat.

Thanks for the link.
So....following the instructions for jbed...I created a text file on the PC containing only the following line:
"\windows\jbed.exe -run s0_"
(with the quotes included). I copied this file to the TP2 and renamed it "OperaMini.lnk". When I run the renamed file it doesn't know how to handle it - I get the "Open with..." dialog.
Can anyone advise what I'm doing wrong??
itm,
I believe what you need to do, is create the shortcut file on your TP2 using a file explorer other than the stock WM one (at least on my Uni, it is not capable of creating shortcuts). I think you can either use the inbuilt function of the file explorer (i.e. paste shortcut or something like that) or create a file and change the file extension to .lnk (as you have done) Once the new shortcut file is created, you need to access the "properties" box of that file and in the box where it says something like "go to" or "link" you will need to paste "\windows\jbed.exe -run s0_" (with the quotes). You then save the change and should hopefully be ready to roll...
Appologies for the vague explanation, but left my Uni at home today, so can't physically go through the process on an actual WM device atm.
If you're still stuck after reading this, PM me and I'll try and walk you through once I'm home.

MS File Explorer soooo slow

I have a 16gb Sandisk card. Resco Explorer reads it in a snap. I have a lot of html reference docs on it, so there are upwards of 90K small, medium and large files on the card (in about 6.5gb of space). Anytime the stock MS file explorer is called into play it takes 1 - 2 minutes to open any directory on the card. I even tried installing the File Explorer extension cab but that made no difference. Anyone had a similar problem, or have a fix? I'd like to use PIE to serve as my default browser because it will open directories from an html link (using file explorer), whereas NetFront can't, but the slowness makes it an unacceptable option. I wish there was a way to have any of the browsers use Resco as the default file system explorer.
How about opening files in the ROM? Is it equally slow? If not, I suspect that has something to do with your SD card.
Here's the thing:
This 16Gb card is a Class 2. Doing the same basic things such as navigating the card in Explorer works fine on my iPaq 210. In fact it's downright zippy at it.
I copied the contents to a Class 4 8 Gb card and it is still just as slow on the TP2, zippy on the iPaq.
Upon starting up File Explorer (fexplore) it takes forever to read the card. After the first time it's tolerable to move around in the card but still somewhat slow. But once I close fexplore and reopen it the same slowness results in the initial read.
It's the same in IE when I use it to read a directory in my HTML menu. Because it utilizes fexplore for that function it takes forever.
Has anyone else seen this sort of slowness with MS Explorer (fexplore) on their phone?
I've tried HouMing's Explorer Extension and that doesn't help. I'm wondering if this could have something to do with a failed attempt on my part to install PIE Plus just after I flashed this ROM a couple of weeks ago. I uninstalled it, and there appear to be no traces of it in the registry, but this behavior by PIE and MS Explore is strange. I've been using PPCs and PDAs forever and I've never seen the likes of this sort of slowness to read a card. And Resco works with no problems or slowness.

Resco Explorer - very slow

I have used Resco Explorer as a great substitute over the built in file explorer for some time on WinMo. I just installed v7.05 on my Tilt2 (stock AT&T ROM) and am finding it really slow. It seems to hang for some time to display the contents in the lower part of the spit view. Any suggestions?
Is this happening for your in every folder, or just a few?
Some, like the windows folder, have SO many files in them, it takes a moment to get the full listing. But most folders come up very quickly for me.
Resco > Total Commander
Of course, its not free.... which is why so many people prefer TC.
Resco seems just fine for me.. Scrolling is a little jerky sometimes, but generally scrolls really well and runs fine.
As mentioned, in larger directories it can move a little slow.. And if something is running in the background that's doing some heavy work, it's slow... like I have a mortscript which zip's up some data files as a backup and I was in Resco while it was running and noticed it was really jumpy then..
You doing much in the background? Is it like that all the time, or just sometimes?

[Q] more a niggle than serious problem

Hi
Spent a while today with various options installing Tom tom Nav 7. Basically I was trying to install completely to phone and not use SD card. After fiddling for a while, following some work-arounds on the web and failing (even with all un-needed files removed there isn't enough native storage), I gave up and did a new install with a 32GB card holding the maps etc. Did an uninstall, got rid of the Navigator folder etc etc. Problem is the recent install has left me in the situation of not having the Tom tom icon in the "All Programs" list, just the generic windows program icon. Tom tom still runs fine from the all programs list and also when added to the start screen. However, I'd really like to have my proper Tom tom icon back. I've tried various things to get it back but can't seem to manage. Does anyone have a quick fix, or know where the icon should be stored?. I know it's silly really but it's just annoying me. Sorry for the ramble and hope someone can stop this bugging me.
Cheers

Sorry, should have said TouchPro 2 Orange UK WM 6.1 TouchFlo
I'm not sure how the start menu functions with file storage in wm 6.1, but in the windows/start menu/programs/ folder you find all of your start menu icons for wm 6.5. The last time I used 6.1 was almost a year ago

Hi
If I navigate there through the PC I see that in the windows/start menu/programs/ folder the programs I have included on the start screen are shown as shortcut (.lnk) files. When I use file browser on the phome to get to the same directory, Tom tom shows its correct icon. May be a deeper problem linking the icon on the start screen with the program icon and the icon under All Programs with the correct icon. Kinda stumped now. Oh well, serves me right for fiddling as I did exactly the same install as originally. Maybe something stuffed up in a .dll file or in the registry?
Thanks for trying.
Cheers
Liz
