Ok, where to begin:
I Rooted this weekend and have been installing a few roms, all has been fine. This afternoon I tried to partition a fresh SDcard using the windows-recover.bat method to allow apps2sd and that (I believe) is where it all went wrong.
When I rebooted the phone it went into a boot loop, never getting past the HTC logo.
So I factory reset from the HBOOT menu and it still looped, until I put a new SD card in - then it loads ok (I'm using Defrost 2.41d) but after the initial set up it says emergency calls only - I manually select Orange (the phone is a factory unbranded/unlocked CPW handset) - it says it's not allowed to connect - won't connect using my T-Mobile sim either.
It also says the SDcard isn't mounted no matter what SDcard I try (tried 4x).
I've tried booting into recovery and installing a zip from the SDcard so try and install a new ROM and it fails saying unable to mount SDcard.
I have also done a cache wipe, and basically any other option that sounds like a wipe type option from within the Recovery menu on HBOOT/Clockword MOD.
I'm lost, if I can't access the SDcard in any way then I'm screwed and can't reflash.
Any ideas gratefully received...
have you tried pushing a rom to the phone from your computer? or unrooting with an official HTC RUU ROM and starting again?
also search the "USB bricked" stuff on the desire android development forum...
Thanks for the advice
I'm trying to push a std Official ROM but the PC just doesn't see there is a phone attached when the phone is in normal use mode, it starts to see it in HBOOT mode but then says the driver has failed etc.
Someone elsewhere has mentioned the USB brick possibility but from what little I've read it requies SDcard functionality and my phone just doesn't see ANY SDcard - even in HBOOT / Clockword MOD recovery mode.
any feedback?
could you solve the problem?
Hey guys I need help, I've been trying to fix my phone for days now with no luck.
(HTC Desire)
Basically this is what happend. I had an MIUI Rom for ages and decided I want to update it. So I used my SD card and downloaded the new rom and flashed it all worked fine.
I then read I should make a ext partition and in the process of it I broke my sd card some how and my phone stopped booting. So I followed a tutorial to put the Rom back on my phone by using adb push to put the rom in the data partition of my phone. But the data partition on my phone was only 140mb and the miui rom was 180mb so I got a smaller 120mb rom and pushed it to the phone and flashed it using adb shell recovery --update_Package=DATA:Rom.zip or something along those lines.
So the rom was working fine but I really didn't like it so my friend offered for me to use his sd card to put my old rom back. So i went through the process but when I clicked install file from zip it just said "no files found" but I know the rom was there. I tried using the adb shell recovery command except with /sdcard/ rather than DATA and I just got signature verification failed. I disabled signature verification in recovery and it still gave me the same error on the phone but on the command prompt window i keep getting these errors:
insmod: can't insert '/res/modules/crc16.ko': invalid module format
insmod: can't insert '/res/modules/jbd2.ko': invalid module format
insmod: can't insert '/res/modules/ext4.ko': invalid module format
After messing about a bit more my phone crashed so I had to remove the battery and my friends SD card became unreadable and needed formatting. He won't let me use it now lolol.
So now im in a position where my phone won't boot at all and when I try to use adb shell to flash a new rom I get those errors in command prompt and signature verification failed. I've also discovered im getting these errors regardless of whether the rom is there or not.
Sorry for the long post but im desperate and any help would be very much appreciated!
Does your phone still boot in hboot?
You need to find a working sd-card. What did you use to partition it? How did you break it?

I used minitool partition wizard I think. I followed some steps in a guide and when I put the SD card into my phone after it said "unrecognised SD format" or something similar so I tried the process again and which point my phone doesn't pick up the SD card at all anymore. So I put it in a memory card reader on my pc and it still picks it up so i deleted all the partitions and reformated it and still only my PC will pick it up phone just says insert SD card.
When I turn on my phone it says HTC for a split second then goes straight to fastboot as if i was holding down vol down + power when I power it on.
Why doesn't the push rom to DATA partition and recover from there work anymore?

You broke your sd-card by using Minitool. Why do you guys use it anyways?!? If you get a new sd-card, check the guide in my sig.
I think you don't need an sd-card to flash a RUU by the exe method. Get the Official 2.3 RUU by these means:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772499
Extract the "RUU_HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade (Gingerbread).exe" from within the "HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade.zip:" then connect your phone to your PC in fastboot, and run the exe.
You will probably need HTC Sync installed, and fastboot drivers.

Thank you so much! Got the phone to boot using your method but now it says insert simcard =/ is this because I used the wrong rom or something?
Thanks!
I don't know. The RUU is fine. Maybe there's dust in the sim slot.
Or maybe, if it's locked, there's somehow a sim lock problem. Try unlocking it with the sim unlocking utility.

I can still acess fastboot actually and my phone recognises the phone when im in fastboot, but as soon as the phone boots the pc stops recognising it and cant find drivers for it anymore
Sorry for being a pain.
Edit: Unplugged my phone from the pc and plugged it in again and I got "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM X No driver found"
I am running my S3 on TMO, with 4.3 booloader & latest modem. I was also running a 4.3.2 TW rom.
This morning, I decided to wipe the rom, then restore it, as it was the one I had in backup. I was having stuttering problems, and thought that because I had added & deleted so much stuff in the past few days, restoring my clean backup would clear it up.
I have the latest TWRP recovery, and wiped the cache & dalvik, then went to restore the rom. But when it finished, and I rebooted, got stuck at the ktoonez (my kernel) logo. I did a battery pull, and went back into recovery, did a full wipe, then tried to restore the rom. This time, 3/4 of the way through, it rebooted on its own, and started to bootloop. When I tried to get back into recovery, it would only boot to the Samsung logo, so I knew that now my recovery was gone. I used Odin on my PC to restore it, but it does the same thing. I do a complete wipe, restore the backup, but it again reboots by itself out of recovery about 3/4 of the way through, then it gets stuck at the kernel logo.
I don't have anything other than the backup stored on the phone. Is there a way that I can load a rom from my PC through recovery so that I can just start over? Or will I probably have to Odin everything back to stock, and start from there (which I've never done from the PC. I have used mobile odin though)?
Update:
I decided to do a odin back to stock. Now though, after setting for a few minutes, it says optimizing apps, goes through it, gets to the little android guy shooting upwards, goes to the Samsung logo, then starts all over again. It just keeps going through it again & again.
anyone?
Did you go into recovery and do a factory reset?

Yes, a couple times.
I have also tried taking the card out the phone and putting it into the pc to manually place the rom on it, then flash it, but my pc wont see the card. It makes the sound that something has been inserted to a usb port, but shows nothing on the computer.
What if you flash a recovery and then a ROM?

In TWRP recovery there is an option to sideload a file. Go to Advanced>ADB Sideload. From here you should be able to use the command:
Code:
adb sideload location/of/ROM.zip
This should transfer the ROM to your internal sd card.
You should make sure that your computer detects the phone before the transfer with the command:
Code:
adb devices
It should should return:
Code:
List of devices attached
phone id recovery
If it returns the above, you know you're okay to transfer. If it doesn't show your phone's model, that means that the computer doesn't recognize your phone as being detected (probably driver related); therefore, your file will not transfer with the sideload command.
I saw your post in the S3Rx thread that your computer won't read your sd card either. I'm not sure if you're using Windows/OSX/Linux, but if you're using Windows, you might want to try installing Linux on a USB drive, booting from that, then plugging in your sd card. In the past, I have had success mounting drives on Linux that would not mount on Windows. I know that this is a little more effort than is probably necessary lol. But I'm not nearly as versed as others here. I just like to tinker a little.
I hope you're able to get your phone booting again!

The phone doesn't have a rom to start with I don't think. This is what I Odin:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291682181
It's the right one, as I have the TMO S3, and I already had it on my phone to begin with. I thought it came with the stock rom included, but when I rebooted, it just gets caught in a bootloop after it says optimizing apps. I can get the recovery back, but I don't know how to get a rom on the card to flash. I even tried to use a old card, but again, my pc won't see it, so I can't put a rom on it to flash.

I am on a windows, and have only used the command prompt once a couple years ago, so my experience with it is limited.
But when I tried the command "adb devices", I got an error message saying that it was not a recognized command .
Also, What is Linux? If it is bigger than a couple gigs, then I don't have any place to put it.

The reason you get the "adb is not a recognized command" is because you don't have the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) installed. The SDK contains an executable command called Android Debug Bridge (adb). You can download and install it from the developer.android.com website. But chances are, you aren't going to have the drivers installed for your computer to recognize your phone in recovery if you don't have the SDK already installed.
If you aren't familiar with Linux, then I would say that going with that route is far more work than you're likely to want to put in to get your phone functioning.
If you'd like to try it though:
Linux is free to use, it is designed and compiled by several different companies. The more well known are: Ubuntu, Mint, Red Hat, and Backtrack. There are many more.
You can visit any of those sites, download the software, and install it on a USB drive. It usually requires a 4GB USB drive. Instructions to install it to a USB drive are usually listed on the site.
After installing it, you can boot your computer from the USB and use Linux like a fully functioning OS right from the USB drive. You won't be required to install it.
You can then try downloading the ROM while on Linux and transferring it to your sd card.
Sidenote:
Linux is an open source operating system on which Android is based. That is why Android is open source, it is ruled by the same GNU General Public License that governs Linux.

When I insert it, and go to that, it shows up as removable disk E, but when I double click on it, it says to insert a disk into removable disk E. I think whats happening is that it's seeing the adapter, but not the card that's in it.

When you right-click on the E:/ do you have the option to format the drive? If so, you may want to try formatting it. That may fix your issue. Hopefully you don't have anything on the external sd that you can't put back on it.

This happened to me to after I installed the latest s3rx Rom...I haven't been able to recover my data or get anything to read my card.
After researching online a lot of people have had success running the chkdsk command... check it out here
http://www.ehow.com/how_7233441_restore-damaged-memory-stick-data.html
Ok, under Device Manager, the computer does see the phone as "MTP". I tried the troubleshooting process, and it went all the way through its thing, but at the end it said "failed" trying to install drivers. I just installed the proper drivers earlier today from Samsung, so I know they are correct. Also, this is as I am connected to the phone, not the card reader. The phone itself is flashing the Samsung logo, and that's as far as it has gone.
This is so frustrating because all I need to do is to get a rom onto the card. If I can get that, I can get into recovery and straighten this all out.
Anyone else with any ideas? I'm beginning to go a bit nuts thinking I have lost my phone just because I can't get a rom placed on my card.

Hello,
I have done days worth of research in my spare time, before finally caving in and asking for help. I'm still kinda new to the custom rom scene, and somewhere I must've messed up.
I was updating my ViperX rom to a newer version, but got an error code during the install, which rendered the OS useless. So decided to wipe and reinstall the older version again, which failed. So I tried to install CM 11, which also failed... Somewhere a long the line my SD Card stopped being detected by the phone AND my PC. So now I don't know how to get an OS on it.
Here's some info I might need to share.:
**** UNLOCKED ***
ENDEAVOUR PVT / S-ON
HBOOT - 1.39.0000
(Bought in Sweden, before moving to the UK)
I have access to bootloader
I have access to recovery which is CWM 6.0.4.8.
My SD card WONT MOUNT (I think), so I don't think I could do "side loading", since it's not recognized in ADB . If I reboot the system, it bootloops at the CM update logo forever. I've tried reinstalling it several times, but it only installs for a few seconds, then restarts. (I'm guessing it's corrupt?)
(Edit: Earlier today it ran out of battery, and despite charging it for hours, it's not turning on and the little LED on the top is blinking RED... What's that all about?)
Is there ANYTHING I've missed, or can do to fix this? I don't care what kind of ROM I have to use at this point, I just want a WORKING phone.
Cheers // Vic

Simple thing to do
Hey XDA Members
I know there has already been similar posts to mine on XDA as I've worn out the search button on google trying to find a solution to my problem, with no avail. So I thought I would leave a description of my own situation and see if a more tech-savvy individual could kindly help me out...
So yesterday I decided it would be a good idea to unlock my bootloader & root my device simply because I wanted to remove all the bloatware which HTC 'generously' crammed into the One X. Unlocking the bootloader was simple enough following the instructions provided. However, rooting my handset was not so effortless. The root was ineffective & I got stuck with yet another unwanted app called SuperSU! (An error message regarding missing binary codes appeared every time I tried to open the application) I tried uninstalling via both settings & google play before finally factory resetting my phone. None of these methods worked
At this point it suddenly dawned on me someone so unenlightened in the art of software development or anything android related shouldn't being toying with stuff he can't afford to break! But I figured it was too late to turn back now and continued in my moment of intellectual darkness...
In my bewildered state I accidentally 'wiped system' using CWM and now I have no iOS. My HTC will only boot until the 'quietly brilliant' slogan appear's & no further. When I connect my phone to my computer via USB I can not access the removable storage device, a removable disk appears but when clicked I am prompted to 'insert removable disk'. I am lead to believe from reading related threads that if I had access to my phones storage then installing a new iOS would be relatively straight forward. Also trying to mount in CWM just retrieves an error message reading 'CWM unable to open ums lunfile (no such directory exists)'. Where do I go from here?
Any help would be much appreciated :fingers-crossed:
Flash a newer recovery, try the latest Philz touch recovery then you should be able to mount sdcard and flash a rom
Hope it helps
if tthe above suggestion doesnt work, try this
http://www.hackmyandroid.com/comprehensive-guide-on-unbricking-the-htc-one-x/4216
I recommend you flash the latest TWRP recovery since it gives you access to the phones sdcard, if your staying stock/near stock OS you can check http://android-revolution-hd.blogspot.com/p/android-revolution-hd-mirror-site-var.html download the Download stock odexed 4.18.401.3, and just flash it in recovery or you can download w.e custom OS you like and flash it the same
Hope it helps
Thank you both for your replies :good:
m.jordan, I tried to flash TWRP onto my device (3 different versions in fact) but once entering recovery mode I was prompted to 'swipe screen to unlock' which wasn't possible because I can only use the volume controls and the power button. After that I downloaded the latest version of CWM which enables me to both use the control buttons & touch screen. I downloaded the 'stock odexed 4.18.401.3' although I have no way of flashing on my device...
I tried the method in the link you kindly provided and followed each instruction carefully. After re-unlocking my bootloader (does it matter whether the device is locked or unlocked when mounting USB storage in recovery mode?) & flashing CWM I downloaded the odexed 4.18.401.3 extracted boot.img & flashed that too. On the website you shared it then prompted me to 'mount usb storage' & my device should now be showing as 'clockworkmod' so I would be able to place the odexed 4.18.401.3.zip into the folder and then flash my handset. Unfortunately I still have no removable disks showing on my PC
My HTC One X does not have removable storage (I suppose you already knew that) & I havn't been able to get my PC to read a removable disk since the day I wiped the system.
If only I could get my computer to show an 'adb device' I'm sure this would be so much easier! I don't suppose you would know anything about that? when I use cmd prompt 'adb device' most of the time it just returns:
adb out of date. killing...
daemon started sucessfully
list of attached devices
Nothing ever shows under attached devices
Nogotaclue, my next step it to try Philz recovery & see where that takes me, i'll let you know how that goes (Although I fear it will just have the same outcome as the rest & not be able to read an sdcard)
Thanks again
well it seems if you could follow the steps on that link, then your pc is recognizing the device so there is hope. If TWRP isnt working then cool. On either the CWM or Philz there is an option called adb sideload rom, if you can't access your SD card you can always sideload and install the rom using either One_X_All-In-One_Kit or WinDroid Universal HTC Toolkit v1.1, made them available here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fv9fun4x2c4dk2l/AABhNHvlpPUvDXUWYK5PJNhpa?dl=0
Once in recovery I believe its under the install option, you have the option to install rom from sdcard and sideload rom, just select sideload. once thats done, open either the all in one or windroid with your device connected to your pc (i recommend the all in one), select the option to sideload, and cross your fingers that it works
