It looks to me like I'm going to be money ahead to pay full retail on the Tilt 2 next month.
I'm on Media Net ($15.00 / month). If you buy on-contract, AT&T is going to force you on to a $30.00 / month data plan, so that's an extra $180.00 a year.
By my math, if I keep the phone longer than 13 months, I'm better off paying full retail of $499.00 for it and staying on Media Net.
Thoughts ?
The AT&T news keeps on a'comin' this weekend. After getting an idea of when the HTC Touch Pro 2 (aka Tilt 2) may be released, and then seeing it show up in inventory, the Boy Genius Report now says it has pricing information for it, as well as a couple of other anticiapted phones. Let's do this the easy way:
* Tilt 2: $299 after contract and $50 rebate; $499 retail.
* Touch Diamond 2: Codenamed the Warhawk and already seen at the FCC, will be known as the Pure and will go for $199 after contract and $40 rebate. Retails for $349.
I'm thinking about this too. Apparently though it doesn't matter if you buy it on or off contract. The new policy is if you get a new Smartphone (AT&T branded, however you do) after September 6, they can and "will" change you to the appropriate data plan. I don't know if they will actually enforce it for people who buy them off eBay and off contract.
What I am really surprised about is the Diamond 2 is only $350 off contract! That is dirt cheap! They go for around $500 on eBay!

The announcement about enforcing smart phone data plans was for people who didn't already have a smart phone I believe.
I'm hopeful I'll be able to keep my contract as is and get the 2 year price but no rebate. I'll be ordering through premiere though, so its usually more lax about the contract stuff.

I don't see how they could unless they are going to do some IMEA enforcement, and they never have before.
I guess ebay is going to be the way to go.
there are different ways to do this:
1- if you are able to, buy from premier. they dont ask you to change any data plan or anything
2- if you are unable to, buy it with contract, add the data plan. go home, put ur sim in your old phone (or any non-smartphone), call at&t and tell them you want to switch phones, and re-add the $15 medianet plan.
theres no point to buy it off contract if you can buy it w/contract

Where can I read this new policy ?
Does someone have a link to it ?
Thanks

Well AT&T has lost so much money with the iPhone that they had to make it back somehow. Good luck with AT&T. I hope they work out better for you than they did for me.
I think the particulars on this one are what's going to matter. I could purchase it on my wife's number .. she's got no data plan at all. I wonder if ATT is going to force you on a data plan if you don't currently have one now (and don't want one)
Again, worst case scenario I can pick one up on ebay and avoid their new policy but it would be nice to know for sure what the policy is.
They are supposedly going to do IMEI checking for all phones. They already do with the iPhone.
I can go all the way through checkout until I confirm my order on Premier and it doesn't ask me to switch data plans. If you have access to it, use it.

Premier is AT&T's service for corporate/business customers. For instance my employer has an 'employee' discount on plans, handsets, accessories, activation etc for personal accounts, though I've never noticed a price difference on phones. Usually just cheaper plans and better customer service.

When I bought my Tilt (1) they had me increase my plan too, but the guy told me that I dont have to keep it at the higher plan. He told me to wait 45 days, then call AT&T and switch it back down to the lesser plan. Worked just fine... Granted that was 2 years ago, so who knows if they changed their stance on that kind of thing...
AT&T Off Contract
My TP is about to die and I want to replace it. I prefer to get off contract and right now I have two concerns:
1. 3G speeds. Can I get it with a AU phone like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-HTC-TOUCH-P...ones?hash=item27ab9cfc19&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Will this phone really work at 3G speeds on ATT?
2. I'm also interested in WinMo 6.5 like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-TOUCH-PRO-2...ones?hash=item27abab1dc0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Does anyone on this site offer a ROM service?
Thx.
James
It only has UMTS850, not UMTS1900. That means it will work on some of AT&Ts 3G network but not all of it. Either the listed lied or didn't know that you need UMTS1900 to FULLY support AT&Ts 3G network. Just wait a bit, AT&Ts version will be out in less than a month. You can buy it retail for $500 off contract and probably less on eBay after it comes out.

A guy on brighthand was just doing a little juggling between an old iPhone and his current Nokia smartphone. He actually has a $30 smartphone data plan, but the point of his post was that after he undid a little iPhone issue, got his old 3G plan back up and running and put his sim back in his nokia, he immediately got a text informing him of his need for a smartphone data plan, and that one would be added for him if he failed to add it. They aren't ONLY checking the iPhone anymore.
They're definitely tightening things down. I doubt it is anywhere near airtight yet, but I'd be hesitant about using last year's workarounds.

I have this phone and it does only have 850 for 3g. For me it works just great because the area I live in has 850 for 90% of ATT 3g. You don't have to have the 1900 band to get "full" 3g it works on one or the other. But if your area doesn't use the 850 band then you won't get 3g. I agree, with the phone from ATT coming in one month it would be better to wait because you will save about $300.00 off retail.
My phone is unlocked and I have flashed Miri's v2.0 ROM, all works great and it is much faster than stock ROM. Once you get the ATT phone just HSPL and flash away the ATT bloat ROM.
I need to know if I get a Touch Pro 2 will it automatically change me to the smartphone data plan?? or will i still be able to use t-zones... I search the forum and there was no clear answer to the question. I currently have a Touch Pro One, and I use t-zones.
Any clarity to the answer will be much appreciated... I'd rather switch carriers than pay the higher amount.
****update*****
I have purchased a TP2 and have had it for about 1 month (with a billing cycle)... I still have T-zones, and I have not needed to upgrade, nor has T-mobile changed my plan. T-zones work at 3G speeds! $5.99 has never been so well spent.
i bought my tp2 from ebay for that reason, i don't have tzones but i do have unlimted data for 19.99 that they don't offer no more and tmobile wants you to buy a new plan that cost 25.99 or 35.99 with text messages. i didn't want that its to much money. but i now have had my tp2 for almost a month and they didn't switch nothing bc i never upgraded with them, and never renewed my contract. also i now get 3g speed.
hope that help your decesion. TP2 is awesome

T-Mobile won't switch you automatically and you still can use T-Zones plan with the TP2.
i just got a new touch pro 2 from my friend 4 days ago and I have tzones $5.99 plan and it is working just fine with 3G.
When the phone first came out there was mass confusion within TMobile over whether a new plan was *required*. But it turned out the new plan wasn't required (and in fact not even any tweaks needed, full 3G right out of the box), but the staff did try to encourage users to change. I had TZones and was able to buy online at the TMobile site without it even asking about a plan upgrade (I took this route to avoid any problems with uninformed staff as I'd been in a branch where they wouldn't sell it without the upgrade, and had had conflicting answers from reps on the phone). A couple of days ago I was talking to the TMo rep on another matter, and he tried to get me to upgrade. He was surprised that TZones was getting me full internet. I said no thanks, and he somewhat reluctantly let it go.
I've heard of people getting full internet from just T-Zones. How exactly does that work cuz it's got me curious now.
t-zones will work with the TP2 and if you happen to have canceled your t-zones plan like me because the person at t-mobile told you it would not work anymore then you can use the 9.99 t-web plan but just make sure in connections you change the APN to Internet2.voicestream.com
TP2 SIM swap question
Hey,
I'm getting a TP2 for my wife with a required data plan at a discount. since I want the phone, I'm going to put my SIM card into it and use it with my T-zones and unltd loyalty plan, then give her a motophone and cancel the data plan. Will they require me to ditch my T-zones and pick up a new data plan or will that scenario only apply to her SIM card?
Thanks,
OZ
I originally had the T-Mobile Wing with T-zones working perfectly, but when the TP2 came out, I purchased it from the T-Mobile store (big mistake). I told them that I didn't use the internet at all and I wanted to keep my T-zones. Unfortunately, they told me that I had to get a smartphone plan at $25/mo and that I could not keep the T-zones intact. It sucks really hard because my friend still has his T-zones for his Dash and when I plugged his SIM card into my phone and my G1, everything worked through T-zones. Plus he got 3G speeds to boot!
If I did the WinMo promotion through T-Mobile, I could have just added another line on my family plan and gotten the phone for $150, keep it for 2 weeks, then cancel the line and pay the $200 ETF and whatever the prorated charges for the extra line would come out to be. I'd still have T-zones on my line, no contract extension, and a TP2 to boot. Either way, I would have ended up paying $400 w/tax for the phone.
On a side note, I called Customer Service and told them that the data charge was going to make my bill a little more expensive than what I could afford and asked them if I could return the phone and get T-zones back. The rep didn't address the return issue and T-zones, but instead offered to switch my $19.99 unlimited family texting plan to the old $9.99 unlimited family texting plan that was available a few years back.
Saving $10/mo is really nice, but I'd rather save another $20. Going to try the web chat with T-Mobile today and use the TZUNL599 code. I saw it HERE and I'm hoping it will work. Wish me luck!

There are two different tzones. One is an old real unlimited internet plan that is grandfathered for some but for others has been replaced by web2go, a more expensive more limited option. The other is what they called their free prepaid data for a while -- that one limits you to a few sites + their store where you can purchase wallpaper and ringtones.
There was for a couple of years a workaround that opened up full internet on the prepaid free tzones, but AFAIK, TMo has completely shut those workarounds down. I've actually been meaning to try it out to make sure, but haven't gotten around to it.
I was worried about losing my unlimited data when I upgraded. VZW told me if you ask you can stay "grandfathered" in to the unlimited.
My order is in and final and I'm still on VZWunlimited-Sweet.
If you opt into a 2 or 4gb plan you can not go back. Also some of the affiliate discounts(mine is 22%) won't apply to the metered plans either
I'm so glad I contacted VZW now I still get unlimited data for $24/mo!
Did you have a verizon 4g phone before?
I signed a 2 year agreement with Verizon when the Droid Charge first came out with unlimited data. I really want the Galaxy Nexus, which means I'll have to pay full retail. If I do that, I can still keep my unlimited data correct? I've never really bought a phone mid contract before so I just want to make sure.

If you buy a phone or if you upgrade, you keep the unlimited data. There's no way you lose the unlimited data unless you add the hotspot feature in which case they say you need to switch to their new data plans. But, you always have your unlimited data as long as you're on VZW.
Correct me if I'm wrong about that hotspot part!
I think that is for the VZW branded crap ass pay per month tether feature
You can use Wireless tether and other apps but you may have to root. I think it may even have native tether? Just don't tell 'em!
I know my DINC runnning CM7 and Asus transformer could tether nativly with bluetooth.
So awesome I feel like I won the lottery I burn through that 4GB in no time on a slow day at work!
They really try to push you away from it too lol

You would have to talk to verizon there was a cut off date when they changed to tiered service, google it you can find it.
I think if they let you instead of paying retail for GN you break your current contract which would be $350- 10 per month you paid and you should be good for new contract price total of ~500 instead of $650. Then you are back in the contract though...

I should've mentioned that my brother is the primary account holder on the family plan since he gets a discount. Don't know if I can just break it - I'm ok with paying retail for it.
Ok This may be a dumb question but i was wondering if I buy a Galaxy Nexus from a friend will I lose my grandfathered unlimited data (coming from a Droic Inc). Will I just go into Verizon and get a 4g sim card and be on my way?
I have asked the same question. The aswers I got were:
Yes, you can keep your Unlimited plan. Verizon does not care whether you have a 3g or 4g phone. They will give you a sim card, and no price hikes.

And just to add more credance / variety to the topic ...
I ordered a GNEX to upgrade from my DINC via Amazon Wireless, choose the same voice plan and told them to "keep my old data plan." Not only do I still have "unlimtied everything" but I also still have the $20/month discount. Nice, how are you enjoying your Gnex was it worth the uprgade?
Upgraded today to 4G LTE on the Razr Maxx so I could get the Lapdoc and they let me keep the unlimited plan. Asked about dropping out of the family plan and was told I'd be dropped to 2 GB per month unless I wanted to pay more.
Yea but I didn't purchase the galaxy nexus from them it was through swappa. So I was thinking Verizon might try to pull some bulls**t and find some way to screw me.
I read a few weeks ago that the new minimum is 2GB data at $20/mo for new lines. However my parents lines only have 200MB data since they barely use any at all, can I upgrade/renew their lines with two Galaxy Note IIs and maintain the 200MB data or will T-Mobile require a push to 2GB?
I'd ask in the store but i'm pretty sure they'll just say 2GB.
you can keep the 200 mb if youve had it before they made the requirement for 2gb
new contracts require 2gb minimum
so yes you can renew it and keep the 200mb for the lines
just stopped by a retail T-Mobile store and was told I'd need to change to 2GB in order to get the discount off the phone. looks like i'll have to check around.

You will have to upgrade to the 2GB plan. The only way to upgrade the phones and keep 200mb is to buy the phones full retail. At which case you might look at switching to the Value plan. It is a much better deal and no data requirements.

great, thanks for the replies. if i have to upgrade to the 2GB, then I'm probably just going to get the phones and upgrade from wirefly. Well i'll wait to see what deals this TMobile sale will be like this weekend. Thanks for the info!
You don't have to upgrade the 200mb. You are grandfathered into it. Call T-mobile to order the phone...and if you talk to customer loyalty, you will get an even sweeter deal. Don't do the value plan either. It makes your phone worth significantly less. So if you plan on switching phones before 2 years is up, try to stay on classic.
I was able to upgrade through best buy mobile ebay store and was able to upgrade a line with NO data, get my Note II, and did not have to add ANY data to that line. I was able to save my personal line eligible for upgrade with data on it for a rainy day.

I did exactly what this guy did and was able to keep my 200MB data plan that way and got the phone for a measly $250 (not including tax). I'm not surprised you didn't have to add any data. Seems to be an oversight on their site. You should be able to go through T-Mobile and get the upgrade without losing your 200MB, but you won't get the full upgrade. The 16GB model is $370 with the $50 MIR, but you only qualify for the rebate if you're on at least the 2GB data plan, so you're looking at a $420 phone if you go through T-Mobile.
you can keep your 200 MB plan, Just call t-mobile and tell then you want to upgrade your phone to Note 2 but you do not want to change your Data plan.
That what I did and made them note in my account, and then I shopped around and the cheapest I found was at wirefly I ordered the phone from them they have to put you on the 2 GB plan but once you receive the phone and you call to activate the sim card you will tell them to switch you back to the 200 MB. and they will do that.

if you are going to sign a new 2 year contract you should give tmobile a call...i posted this on another thread...i got $200 additional off of the $420 2 year contract price AND i got to keep my rebate AND i got my upgrade fee waived...so essentially i got the phone for $208 total
just ask them to work with you and see if you can get a discount cause the other major carriers also carry it at a cheaper price
i dont know if this played a major factor or not, but i have been with tmobile for 7-8 years and i mentioned that to them
i also noticed that my data plan was switched from $25 (my g1 grandfathered data) to $35...i called to complain about that and said i would return the phone if they didnt switch it back...they switched it back
Overall, T-Mobile's value plan is a better deal - not just over the life of the contract, but what you pay in store as well. Also no upgrade fees or required features. Third parties can't offer it.
That is, of course, unless you call customer care and kick up dirt.. But either way, they'll probably get you to commit to a classic plan.. Which means locked in features.. Which I don't like

That is, of course, unless you call customer care and kick up dirt.. But either way, they'll probably get you to commit to a classic plan.. Which means locked in features.. Which I don't like

They don't want people on the classic plan. They are trying to get everyone on the value plan.
