WARNING: themed google apps - G1 Themes and Wallpapers

to all themers(of cyanogen roms): if you theme the google apps, please make it known in your threads that you have done so. like a warning.
clearly google apps can not be restored anymore by simply flashing the rom, because theyve been removed from it. there are a couple ways to restore them.
1. nandroid
not the best because if you like the theme, either you better keep that old nandroid around for when you get tired of the theme, or it becomes incompatible with updates, OR your screwed. most people wont keep around old nandroid backups. so this method while it works, isnt very pratical
2. bkmo
he if you go to his signature and dowload his file, you can just flash that, then flash your rom, then reboot. now its supposed to work, but for me, i kept losing my auto rotation. i tried everything to fix it(evne the old code in the cyanogen stable thread) but nothnig fixed it. i did not try a wipe. thats because if im gonna wipe, i might aswell use the 4th method. not sure if this is just me, but you could try this, if it works, great! if not, look down
3. daveid
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=569825
the problem here should be obvious. if you do it this way, then you have to rely on this guy to continue to update his rom for every update cyanogen releases. and look, not to be mean, but 4.1.9999 has been out a while and this has not been updated. so its an option, not a good one, but its there lol.
EDIT: according to daveid, you can flash his update and still flash the cyanogen updates with no problems. so my guess now is this is the easiest way to restore, and actually the original way, cause his is just a normal cyanogen rom.
4. cyanogen!
just start over with the cyanogen way. wipe, flash the htc recovery, flash rom, and your done i chose this way because what better way to use than the way by the maker of the rom? its gonna work for sure. unless YOU screw up. oh and as for the rom, you dont need to literately start over from 4.1.99. just get whatever is the latest rom. unless cyanogen specifically says to start over. doubt that
5. you caan just try what david1171 said about 2 posts down. i havent tried it and dont care much for it cause im done with themes anyway(they just slow my phone down, or least the ones with advanced launcher do). but if it works, it works
thats all i can think of for how to restore themed google apps. if theres any other way, post it! just remember, if you flash a theme with themed google apps, and you lose the nandroid backup before you flashed that theme, be ready to deal with it. hope this helps
btw, i posted this cause i didnt want people asking me how to restore them. i like helping, but i dont have time. so its easier to just make this post, and let people post other/better methods of doing this. so, if you guys still dont understand, ask the people that posted down there, because they know more than me abuot this. ask them

One of the themes to look out for is m_blend sir mez theme has google themed apps I currently have this problem now great theme though

nandroid is the best way to go. you do know that before it was implemented into the recovery image (making it possible for even the dumbest people to restore a nandroid) the only way you could nandroid was through fastboot on a computer, that is why you store things on a computer.
make a folder on your computer, and every time you flash a new rom and get it set up the way you want it, then nandroid and store it on your computer.
you act like it is so hard to pull the apps from the htc file and restore them in recovery without flashing anything
Code:
mount sdcard
mount system
cp /sdcard/appname.apk /system/app/appname.apk
(do as many times needed for every google app themed)
reboot

What apps?
I don't see what the big deal is here. There are only a couple of apps in the HTC image that could possibly be themed here. Like youtube, maps and gmail are the only ones that come to mind. What else is there? Let me know and I will make an update to just restore those apps. In fact the apps folder from HTC has 55 files, and in Cyanogen there are 44.

slow burn.

4.1.9999 has been out a few days, jesus christ people have a little freaking patience. I will re-up the single flash and theme template when I have time, I work a full time (over 40 hours a week) job, am married, and buying our first house. It is absurd to think that all I spend my time on is updating crap to make your life easier.
So... give me till the weekend like I posted in my thread. You will have a 4.1.9999 update (and theme template). And my update doesn't keep you from following Cyanogen's normal update path. Not sure where that came from. The backuptool.sh that I have removed is in the update itself, it does not reside on the device.
ehh screw it, it was pretty simple to modify the theme template, so a new version is up. Check my thread for links.

for some reason i couldnt do a back up with nandriod now that i have flashed htc rom and cyanogen rom i have no problems but for some reason after i flashed the theme i couldn't restore or do backups but like i said everything is fine now

Not nandroid, bart.sh
I've been off straight nandroids for awhile now. I only use bart.sh (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=562292) to backup/restore. This completely and totally solves the problem. PERIOD. This thread can now be close. LOL.

Found the following on Sirmez's theme xda page.. i flashed it, worked fine, removed his themeing...
If you dont like my Market and want to remove the theme fine heres the theme template, flash it and your free:

(flash this to get you back to 4.2.1 as it was before)

All themes except 1 freezing on install

Hey guys. I'm pretty new here, and I've had my G1 for about a month, only rooted it just last week.
I've installed several themes with out problems... the most recent one I installed was the Super Mario theme by RandumAccess and it went in just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=492398 (this theme)
However, I've since tried to install other themes and none work! They all freeze on the second loading screen, where it says (or usually does, at least) "android" followed by the flashing driod bot.
I've attempted to install three different themes and they all do the same thing. I'm forced to put the Mario theme back on my SD card (via another phone), then re-install it and it loads up just fine.
I'm hoping there's a way to fix with that doesn't result in wiping my phone, it's a pain to redownload all those friggin apps!
It will help us to help you if you can document the exact steps you took when trying to install the other themes sans Mario.
Thanks!
Have u tried reinstalling the original? That usually gets my phone back for me when testing my theme images.
I HAD the same problem too- trying to flash back to my own theme from sterriccson's comp theme. In the end i just stayed with the comp theme and modded it to my likings. I think it's a conspiracy to make us stay on that theme
could be many things, the file you installed could be corrupt, try copying it over to your sd car again, if that doesn't work, try downloading it again. Also do you have your apps saved to your sd card? That has been known to cause issues before, something I just had to work on with Dark Knight since it was a full update. One more thing to check, which themes are you installing that are freezing?
Sometimes its good to install a fresh JFv1.42 before you switch to a new theme because sometimes things from one theme will carry over to the next. And alot of these themes are pretty large. Maybe you should try RC33 Lite before installing another theme.

wow my theme is the only one? cool! LOL
Man you might need a wipe and start with a fresh jf1.42. I recommend to always do a back up and learn how to fastboot your back up to your phone. It gives you peace of mind to know that if anything happens like that you can always flash your back up and your phone is back to the state it was even if you have to wipe. No more reloading apps.
I love how he tells us what theme works on his phone but forgets to tell us what rom is installed on his phone.
You can not apply Any/All themes on any rom.
The themes have to be built for the rom your phone uses.

I like how you referred to me as if I'm not capable of replying to the thread.
I understand the fact that you cannot install any theme to any ROM. I always check to make sure it's a version compatible with mine.
I could have sworn I installed the JF 1.42, but in the bootloader it was JF 1.41...
It's RC33 as well. I figured most would just assume I have the latest update... why wouldn't you?
Since the Mario theme I've tried out FadetoBlue (didn't work after putting it on the SD card twice), minimalDroid (redownloaded, didn't work), and the standard RC33 theme that Stericson (I believe) posted.
Its not good to assume anything when doing technical stuff, you could have adp1.1 or RC 9, how do we know?
Never wipe first, not necessary, reinstall the JF 1.42 stock, then flash your theme, might need to remove the system tones, or put them on the sd.

I never mentioned that you're not capable of replying.
In my experience with this forum, nothing can be ASSUMED.
Especially with a phone that most newcomers are still trying to figure out.
The wording "I like how he" just sounded like you were addressing others about me, in my thread.
So I guess I'm willing to do a wipe and reinstall RC33, this time I'll just do RC33 Lite.
Anyways, my question is do I need to do something before hand? Or just throw the zip on my card and load from it? I hear you guys say "wipe," will I need to do something prior?

I want to change themes, how can I?

I have been spending the last 2 weeks flashing rom after rom (mainly HERO ROMs) and i bored of them
i want to go back to the Cyanogen 4.0.2 ROM and i see all these people applying themes with ease. how do you do this?
when i had my stock Mytouch NON ROOT i had to download an app called OPEN HOME and then download themes from the ap store but OPEN HOME made my phone so slow so i got rid of it. (even though i paid for it)
i just want a nice clean rom with a clean theme (i like that new google chrome theme i saw)
never mind, i got it. didnt know it was as easy as just copying it to your SC card and going into recoveyr mode and hitting update.
if i want to change themes often can i just copy the new theme to the SD card and go into recovery >update every time? or do i need to reflash the Cyanogen ROM first before doing a new theme every time?
i read somewhere where someone said they were just flashing themes over each other and something messed up and someone told them to reflash the Cyanogen ROM but NOT do a WIPE and they would be good.

i always wipe when i change themes. just because i dont want to deal with the headaches later if something from the old theme messes with the new theme. but i'm no expert.

[Q] Need some help on first ROM flash

Ok, first of all, I've done a lot of reading so I'm not just postin w/o lookin but, with all the posts out there I may have missed something... so if there's a thread(s) that answers this that you know of a link would be awesome.....
So I've been rooted for a while and want to try out a new ROM... had a few questions
1) Before I flash a new ROM I do a Nandroid and wipe so... when I flash the new ROM are all my apps still there or do I have to go into Titanium Backup and restore each one from the SD? .. Basically, once I flash, how do I get all my apps that I use on a daily basis back up and runnin?
2) I know making a Nandroid backsup the whole system so, if I flash a new ROM, kernel and all and then restore to pre-flash then I will have the original radios, kernel and everything?...
3) Is there a ROM that is really stable, fairly fast (would rather speed over battery life) and has a lot of pre-built themes built?... I've made a couple of my own "partial" themes with custom icons and such but would like some pre-made stuff to play around with...
4) I've learned a whole sh!t-ton of stuff from you guys on here so thanks, us average folks (non-programmer) appreciate it..

1. You will restore all your apps with TB
2. If you restore a backup you will have everything back to before you flashed a new rom.
3. I like using Fresh but its a sense rom but very great , but yea just look around and pick a rom. Experiment and good luck
thanks man, I was already lookin at Fresh so I may give it a try tomorrow...
One more thing, I love the Swype keyboard and dont wanna lose it... so is that like an app that I just backup in TB and restore with whatever ROM I flash or a I stuck with the ROM's keyboard..?

1) Yes use TB to restore your apps. I recommend the paid version because it restores fast and automatically. I don't have to manually confirm each one like my cheap ass girlfriend...but she doesn't flash much. The poor Epic devs don't have froyo source.
2) Yes except for the radios. I nandroid just in case but I prefer reflashing what ever rom I'm going back to because nandroid restores just didn't run as well. But I have a new phone now so maybe that is changed.
3) Try MIUI its so fast that I underclock to 499 and it still feels like its full speed. It also has a built in theme manager. Also cyanogenmod has a lot of themes (turrrrible sentence structure). If you don't like aosp try myn's rom.

Oh ok, Thanks a lot for the info.
i think most of your questions are answered. i'll just give you the usual must try rom list:
myn's warm twopointtwo: this is the complete theme rom. it is simply fantastic. really, it looks like a new phone. performance is great, added apps are good, tweaks are good, everything is good really. it is definetally a must try. do not miss this.
caulkin's evio 2: another absolute must try. the tweaks are what make this rom special. caulkin knows his code. this is the fastest sense rom i have ever tried. simply speedy, fantastic battery, great tweaks by caulkin (almost all other devs use his tweaks) and a slick, silvery theme that makes sense look not ugly. in my opinion, this is myns only rival rom. crazy good.
ava-froyo z series: very good rom. ava knows his code. he has really dived deep into the evo's system, and made tweaks to just about everything, even how the radios interact. this is the rom if you want pure tweakage. works for some, for others it does not work. i'd reccomend trying it for 2 or 3 days to see if it is fantastic, or really slow and bad battery.
mikfroyo: i personally dont like this but many do. very small, fast rom.
then you have the aosp roms. these are not based off evo code. built from the ground up, using only google's base code for android.
cyanogenmod: humungous project. works on many different phones. vanilla style (google) android. many tweaks that should have been in android in the first place. this is the ultimate pure android. it should be what google uses for their stock. the things these people think up, makes iphones jealous. too much to name.
miui: many people like this. i dont, but its all preferance. iphone-like rom without all the, um, iphone. looks and feels as slick, fast, and battery efficiant as the iphone 4 itself, but its android! i have no idea who these dudes are, but they must be programmers because they baisically rewrote android to look, feel, and act like a crossover, with many tweaks in between. fully customizabe, not at all vanilla android. a must try. you may not like it but then again you may love it.
again, try caulkins, myns, miui, and any more that you may want.
any more reccomendations to add to this list?
Thanks for the info guys, really helped me out...
I know to do a nandroid backup but I've read all kinds of different stuff about what to backup and what app to use to back it up... apps? texts/calls? data? ... I just dont want to miss anything...
So far I've backed up all my apps in Titanium, my texts and calls with two apps for that, my contacts to google and just in case I backed up my whole SD card to my desktop... Anything that y'all can think of that I may have missed?.. Again, thanks
Yea thanks for the list.

I was expecting that.
Either way, you really went above and beyond on backing up. I wouldn't worry about much more. To do a nandroid backup, boot into recovery. Scroll to backup/restore. Choose NAND backup. Make sure system, data, boot, cache, radio, and wimax are all checked. Then hit backup. Wait 5 minutes. Done. This is all assuming you have the newest Amon-ra recovery. If not, go to rom manager and choose flash alternate recovery at the bottom. Amon recovery is highly recommended over clockwormod. Sadly clockwork mod is the default for unrevoked.
So after you backup, make sure you wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache twice each before flashing a rom. Good luck
'Preciate all the help.. I now have Myn's Warm2.2 runnin and everything works great..
Also, just to note, if you like me FORGOT to back up all apps before flashing for the first time (ouch), you can get swype back very easily! They opened up the beta again, so you can just download from their website from your phone.

Isn't swype in the newest ota now? Well, the beta is better. If you want the beta instead of the ota version, use root explorer or adb commands to delete swype.apk from /system/app/ and libswypecore.so from /system/lib/. Then just install the beta like normal, and accept the do not update to newest ota warning it gives you.

How's the beta version better, what's it got that the version that's included in Warm2.2 doesnt have?
By the way, just my opinion but I tried MIUI and really didnt care for it.. too... iPhoneISH I guess, didnt feel as intuitive as Sense to me... but then again I've never had an iPhone.. anyway, just my 0.2cents
the beta version is better bcuz it is newer. newest is best, as they say. the ota is 2.7.something and the beta is on 2.17 already. the ota one is included in myns, and all sense roms. i'm not into miui either, but many people are. hey, its worth the flash to try it.
Oh ok, well I'll just stick with the OTA version for now I guess if there arent any glaring differences... and yeah, it was worth a try.. I can see how that would be someone's cup of tea.. just not mine.
Yes I would do the same if I had backed it up despite it being a stock version it never let me down. Regardless, you have a choice, for the time being

[ROM][CDMA][VZW]KhasMek's K-leanMod v3

(Yes I know clean isn't spelled with a K)
Well, I've been working on my personal ROM for quite a while now, since there isn't much out there for us VZW users, I've decided to share. This might work on sprint, but I haven't tried. Sprint users should stay away unless they really know what they're doing. As normal, it's not my fault if you fubar your tab by flashing this or if zombies come and speedhump your cat. You've been warned.
Preamble
1. Don't ask me on how to install koush's recovery, that's what his thread is for. Laymen's terms- Did you do THIS? If you did, you're good to go, if not. do it.
2. I am not going to teach you how to use, or set up the applications that you need to use/flash this. I have included links to everything you need to know, just click and read for a second. If you are not willing to put out a little bit of effort to better your experience with your Tab, I am not going to waste even more of my time that could be dedicated towards making my ROM better. Also, if you aren't willing to give yourself the fundamental knowledge required for flashing this and something goes wrong, you will then have the required skill to fix it, instead of blaming me for bricking your Tab. I don't need that. I am willing to support my ROM and help with some confusion, but if you want me to do everything for you- lo siento.
About This ROM
There's not too much to say about it. It's DJ11 with almost 100MB of bloat ware, Verizon/Samsung crap and worthless other nonsense pulled out and the good bits updated with parts of the EURO updates/dumps. I have also done some other mods and optimizations.
Features
Updated Samsung apps from newer GSM ROMS! (The only way you can currently experience the updates on your CDMA device)

lot of other crap, I can't remember, blockbuster, games, it goes on. I pulled out almost 100MB of apps, unneeded audio files, apps and such.
Changelog
v3 - Installation Update
Not much has actually changed about this ROM, I started to theme it, I stopped, I need to replace the zips with the stock again
CWM flashable zip install method has been uploaded for ease of flashing
v2 - Application Update
Lots of apps integrated from the GSM JMI Dump from Rotohammer. As usual I have deodexed and zipaligned the apks. There are some nice updates in the task manager, Contacts, Calendar, email and several other apps.
v1 - Initial Public Release
I was having some core issues with previous versions, but I've been running for well over 12 hours now without a problem.
If people paying for the data plans would report back to confirm all wireless cell activity still functions, that would be great (I only use wifi, but my VZW location service still works, so your data should too).
Known Issues
The notification/ringtones are duplicated in the selection windows, don't know why but there are no redundant files.
You will get core FC's and FC's in contacts, calendar and email until your Twitter/Facebook/Gmail accounts are fully synced, this is normal. Just give it a couple hours to fully sync (or turn up the sync interval to speed up the process).
If you are having any issues with the ROM loading on the first boot (it shouldn't take more than 4 minutes at the black screen) Turn the Tab off by holding down the power button until it powers off (9 seconds or so), Boot into recovery, select advanced --> reboot recovery. Once the secondary recovery loads, select format/factory reset and reboot.
Set picture as lockscreen wallpaper doesn't work.
Plans
I don't know, it's fast right now. Probably just more streamlining, accurate battery mod, shutdown options and a theme are all on the list too. This is really just to get me through until I finish some other things. You can make requests, but don't expect me to listen to them. I'm just sharing the ROM I've made for myself, so it is, and always will be, configured the way I like it. There's always the random good idea though. Let me know if you find any serious bugs too please.
Installation
Download the VZW bootstrapper or manually CWM your Tab (instructions HERE)
Download ROM
Factory Reset (BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST! Should only be necessary if coming from stock)
Boot into recovery mode (power off, power button + volume up)
Select Install zip from sdcard
Select Select zip from sdcard
Browse to the location of the ROMs zip
Select yes and wait for the flash to complete
Reboot
Extras
Metamorph to change status bar black - DOWNLOAD
Metamorph to change status bar white - DOWNLOAD
Metamorph to change status bar transparent - DOWNLOAD
Note: Metamorph can be downloaded from the market HERE or if you prefer ninjamorph HERE.
Thanks
jt1134, Adrynalyne, rotohammer, TCMAN and everyone in IRC as usually is great help.

Great Khas.
Had an issue with the Market, even though you said it was in the rom. I had to use unyaffs on my CWM backup and pull the Vending.apk there and then push it. Otherwise I'm loving it. Great job
Awesome. We have been waiting for someone to step up for us VZW guys. I will be flashing tonight. Thanks man
Im getting alot of fcs when adding a gmail account. Im not sure. Why.

Two Quick Questions
Hi Guys, I have my tab rooted but that was the extent of my knowledge. I apparently am unsure what this means exactly.
Can someone explain how to do this - YOU MUST HAVE AN EXT4 FORMATTED FILE SYSTEM TO USE
Can someone walk me through the steps of how to - Flash Via Heimdall
Thanks for this..
@ Boushh ,
I have 3 VZW Tablets...funny I got them all for Christmas Gift from One Vocal Wish at Shopping center with my Friends...LOL
I am glad to Try out your ROM, test bugs and other stuff!!
If you can just Post a Descriptive Instruction "How-To" step by step short and brief understandable, will be AWSOME!! All I care is IT Works!! and Functional 75% of Time it is ON!!

The easiest rout for you would be to download and install the "Verizon Tab Bootstrapper" (it costs a buck, also, not my app) from the market onto your tab. that will convert the necessary partitions to ext4. Alternatively you can follow the method to do it manually HERE

No to come off as rude or anything, but I do have instructions on the first post. They are pretty much all you need, so what exactly are you not getting or would you like explained more in depth? Once I discover this I can update my instructions to where it would be more helpful for some of you.

Hey Boushh,
When you said:
YOU MUST HAVE AN EXT4 FORMATTED FILE SYSTEM TO USE
Use Koush's recovery to get there.
Do you mean just wipe data and cache in cwm or something more?
Also when you said to Flash Via Heimdall - Im just not sure how to use Hiemdall. Can you tell me what steps to take.
Sorry for the questions and thanks for your patience.
Hey boushh, would you mind listing out all the apps that you deleted out of the /system? I just want to make sure that some of the stuff like divx, mobile print, etc is still there.
Thanks for all your hard work!
Boushh,
Thank you so very much for this. I just flashed v2 and I'm in love with my tab all over again! I do have 3g enabled, and so far it seems to be working just as well as the stock ROM. So far I don't notice any issues and it's blazing fast. I'm also using your new kernel as well. Thanks again and keep up the awesome work!

I really hope you did a backup cause it you did then you can go into recovery and restore your system. If not you can still go into clockworkmod and reinstall the rom from there. that is where you should have installed the rom from.

You factory reset, as I said in the instructions, also, there is no zip. You flash via Heimdall in download mode, as I said in the instructions. The ROM will not boot unless you factory reset

I would use the heimdall command prompt, the GUI doesn't always work right. Also, this has no verizon boot animation, so you will just see a black screen for a second once you get past the samsung screen.

No, you don't install the rom from Clockworkmod. You should read the directions before spreading misinformation in the future.
Does this rom have the bluetooth drivers fixed?

Above is a Video, how the ROM looks like after flashed with Hemidall.
I used Frontend instead of CMD, also purchased the VZW Bootstrapper!
This is 2nd Tried with Voodoo Kernel!
Everything moves pretty well as you can see. So far no Bugs, I just missed the good old File App from original stock rom.
Deleted as well no need to argue over a Rom. Now if you stole my beer than I can see.
@boushh is the CWM for vzw you using version 3 or a later version? Got some people asking me in another forum an I want to make sure I give them the correct info.

[Q] Best Customizations for Rooted Incredible with Stock Rom

I have an Incredible that I have rooted with unrevoked. I rooted it after I received the ota update with froyo and have done nothing else. I have yet to put a rom on since I really don't want to download and install all of my apps again and tweak my preferences. All that being said I want to do some things to customize my phone and have read about other ways to customize with roms, what things am I able to do? Here are some of the things I would love to be able to do to my phone:
Color Notification Icons - Is there a way? I tried one months ago and my phone crashed so I had to do a nandroid restore.
Change Lockscreen - Is there a way I can change the slider? Different color or something?
Blue Theme - I'd love to change all the places that are green to blue, such as when dialing or navigating around on the phone.
Is there anything else you guys have done to your Incredible that sets it apart? I really love to customize and tweak things to make it my own. Thanks for reading and helping out guys.

This is easiest to do using CM6/7 and applying a theme pack

> Not many customizations have been made to the HTC lockscreen. You can find a few metamorphs for VANILLA lockscreens to make it look like the Droid 2 / R2D2
Blue Theme - I'd love to change all the places that are green to blue, such as when dialing or navigating around on the phone.

Minimalistic Text Widget & Launcher Pro are your friends
I also LOVE sonnysekhon's themes for CM7.
Good luck, have fun, nandroid, rinse, repeat

Forgot, you aren't deodexed.... you really need a custom rom to be able to theme. If you want a stock sense you should look into virtuous... its pretty much stock, looks stock but is still custom. Then you can flash themes on it.....
A little off topic, but since I want to learn...
What exactly is deodexed? I remember moving *.odex files from system apps I didn't want after I rooted.
And that's a bummer, I'd hate to have to install all of my apps again after flashing to a new rom. I have looked at both Virtuous and Vanilla in the past but didn't want to deal with all of the extra work afterwards. I'm unsure what CM6/CM7 is, I'm about to google it.
Is there anything I am able to do besides what I've mentioned?
Try flashing virtuous without wiping data, just wipe caches. like I said before, that's pretty much a stock sense rom. You should be ok and not need to re set up your stuff. If not, restore nandroid.

If your main concern about trying out ROM's is having to re-download all of your apps, I have an app for that
Titanium Backup
Super simple. It lets you back up the apps you downloaded. Here's what you do:
1. Download Titanium Backup from the market
2. Individually back up your apps using Ti - WARNING! DO NOT BACK UP SYSTEM DATA. Also don't back up Gmail/Maps/anything stock that's going to be in the new ROM. Titanium shows items in red that you shouldn't back up, so it shouldn't be too hard. Rule of thumb: if you downloaded it yourself, back it up, if not, stay away
3. Download your new ROM and put it on your SD card
4. Wipe
5. Flash new ROM - FYI CM7 stands for "CyanogenMod 7" which is a really popular AOSP ROM
6. Sign in with your Google account/Facebook/etc.
7. Download Titanium backup > Batch > Restore apps
You're going to have to click "Install" for every app you backed up if you've got the free version, the paid one does it for you.
You're also going to have to do your other tweaks (ringtones, autorotate, etc.) manually as Ti can't do that, but I think it's well worth the initial time investment to get a better/faster/more customizable ROM
TL;DR: Titanium Backup backs up your apps. If you want customization, you need a new ROM. If you want Sense, SkyRaider 3.5 or Incredibly Re-engineered 2.3.1 is best for customization (both have blue themes available), but Virtuous gives you the most "stock" feel. If you want AOSP, can't do much better than CyanogenMod7 for theming
EDIT: In response to your original post...
Colored Notifications are only going to work on a deodexed ROM (aka Virtuous/SkyRaider) - there is a rooted/deodexed stock ROM floating around that rmk40 posted (he also created Virtuous)
WidgetLocker is a paid app that can change your lockscreen - and here's a really popular app on modding the stock options it gives to your liking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825553
Cyanogenmod7 or CM7 is basically one of the most badass roms available, it's not only the newest of the cyanogenmod series but it's also built off of android 2.3 Gingerbread, so no having to wait for the actual legit GB release like everyone that's not rooted. If you want to see it in action look for it on youtube, otherwise to learn about it go to cyanogenmod.com or cyanogenmod.com/forums, everyone there is very helpful. I am running the RC1 of CM7, there is a few nightly builds after that so far but I'm just gonna stick with the first release canidate until RC2 hits.
I'd say the main reason I rooted was to try out different ROMs. I know you said you want to leave all your preferences and apps untouched, but I quickly got over that. I got all my contacts organized in GMail so that they sync every time I flash a new ROM. Each ROM has different preferences to play around with. For apps, I realized what I needed to do was just choose a few really important ones so I wouldn't have to spend all day setting up my apps for each new ROM.
I'd recommend doing a nandroid backup in recovery and trying out a few different ROMs. Try MIUI and Cyanogenmod 7, they're great. When your done you can restore your nandroid backup and get back to exactly where you are right now.
If you decide you want to stick with a new ROM, you can use Titanium Backup to restore your important app data, like someone else pointed out.
Once you're rooted there is a whole new world of opportunities...have fun!
Ok you guy's have got me very interested now. I think I want to move forward now! That cm7 looks great and I'd love to move to gingerbread. I was curious since this is the nightly beta release if I could later get the updates without flashing a rom again and restoring my apps. I had also heard I would have to flash more files like the radio after the install too. I'll have to read more on this.
Use Titanium Backup for all your apps and their data where you can put them all back on your new ROM.
You can do a full backup via Clock Works so if you don't like the new ROM or don't want to deal with any more of this new stuff then you can revert exactly to where you were before.
> For the lockscreen you can uninstall the lockscreen and then the default android one will be there.
To change the main look and feel you can try Launcher Pro from the market. It's pretty sweet. I use it with my custom ROM just because I love the cube transition and how you can hide a lot of the useless apps in the app drawer.
If you dont want to load a custom rom but would like to just theme there is a deodexed completely stock rom around here that will give you that option. All you need to do is flash in recovery and since you are going from a stock rom to another stock rom you do not need to wipe/clear anything so all of your apps and settings will remain intact.
you can consider just flashing skyraiders 3.5 and then not doing anything fancy. It's very close to stock with little improvements around so you might find that to be a good start.
Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions guys. For right now I think I am going to wait for a stable release of CM7 before I flash a rom. I really want Gingerbread but not an unstable release of it. I am looking at LauncherPro now and thinking of checking out ADW. I've watched some different videos on both, which do you guys think is better?
I also did one mod I'm happy about, I changed the market app to the themed "Black Market" with the different icon and appearance. I think I am going to look for some transparent apps next to do something different. I with there was more I could do with my stock rom, it sucks not being deodexed. Anything else worthwhile to look into?

CM7 is incredibly stable for only being at RC1....
I use it everyday now (Occasionally flashing something for fun) and I have NO problems with it.
If you flash CM7 RC1 you won't regret it. Just my two cents.
How long would anyone guess the final release will take? I think I am just going to keep an eye on it's progress and eventually switch. While it may be working well now I just feel uneasy about flashing that rom now, even though I can restore a backup. I'm having some fun now customizing my phone with Launcher Pro. I certainly like the customizable dock over the Sense dock. I'm trying to search for mods I can do with my non-deodexed rom but not too much luck. Thanks for the thoughts everyone!
I used to be like you so just as some insight from someone who remembers being where you are. Don't worry about cm7 rc1 or the newest nighlys, they're very stable. Although for a stock sense experience, one fun rom I've found to be fun and really have me flashing back and forth with cm7 is incredibly re engineered. With Chad's kernel its super fast, battery efficient and stable.
So ymmv but cm rc's are generally pretty stable. And incredibly re engineered is also a great choice

ok i am a noob and just like the guy before i am rooted and using hydra oc kernal but stock rom froyo 2.2 and preaty much same reasons as the other guy for not flashing a rom yet. i think my main problem is just not quite sure of all the details yet. someone mentioned making a backup through clockwork i did that, chose the backup and restore option, but not sure what all this actualy backs up...everything? or just parts, and also little hazy on the kernel/rom workable combinations... how do you know which ones can be used together and which will brick or what ever may be the consiquencess, i only have had my phone little over a month, so i still working up my courage too. gained some today my wife's got same phone and had hers rooted with same kernel, and needed to return it cause having sms, and call issues. i was able to return hers to stock and s-on. so that really boosted my confidence, i know alot of it is just brute force reading to learn but i never was much on long reads, so i usualy read other peoples mastakes and not do that and try everything else in time... kinda of an ass-backwards way of doing it but does tend to cut down on the reading...lol so any tips you want to throw at me i am listening...
funny i just found that htc had a phone named Thoth, but i guess it was canceled or something...to bad liked the name...
