Hello,
So here's the story - got my Orange-branded Hero today and decided to apply the official russian RUU update to get cyrillic keyboard. Bypassed the CID check using the Goldcard method and successfully applied the update. However, once the phone rebooted, it only got to the "unlock sim" screen. If i enter my PIN or do anything else the phone either reboots or locks up. I cannot apply another RUU since the status bar doesn't react to touch now and i cannot start the sync process. What i can do is boot into the stock recovery screen.
The question is - can i use it to apply a stock update.zip or have just made myself another expensive paperweight?
You can try to get in recovery mode over fastboot and flash a update.zip you find some generic and custom in the modaco custom rom thread.

I have a HTC desire that I rooted a while ago with Unrevoked3. I did this so I could run Titanium backup and have a backup of all my apps and data.
Yesterday, I received a notifiction from my operator (Meteor in Ireland) that there was an update so I clicked on install.
It didn't install as the recovery told me the signature couldn't be verified (I assumed because I had rooted it) so I went into recovery, turned off signature verification and selected the ip frm the SD card o update.
The phone then proceeded to constantly reboot on th green letering HT screen with quietly brilliant under it. I lef it hour and even remoed the battery for an hour and tried again but no better.
I tried to reboot into recovery but get a picture of a phone with a red exclamaion mak in a triangle.
So, I can't boot my phone and I can't get into recovery.
Help!!!!!!
This is because you can't apply an OTA update to a rooted phone without ****ing things up - this is about the 10000000000000000000000000000000th thread on this so it's well documented
Only way around it is to manually flash the OTA ZIP file again (but it still might not work 100%) or get the RUU for your operator, if available, and flash it and start from scratch
Thanks for your speedy & not so subtle reply - guess I deserved that!
Could you point me to a thread of how to go about doing that without recovery?
Without knowing the ROM version you were on originally out the box/are on now there's not a lot that can be done. I can't say I've ever seen an RUU from your operator so it might be like the Orange users where one simply hasn't been leaked. I also don't know what the OTA file name is. If I did I could at least get a link to manually download it. There's a chance it's still on your SD card
If you boot into recovery is it the stock Android one?
I can't boot into recovery - I get picture of phone with red exclamation mark on it.
Meteor are an Irish operator. Verys mall so I am amazed they produce their own customized roms!
At the red ! hold volume up and press power - this will get you into the stock Recovery...not that it helps you!
You might need to try and make a gold card and flash a stock WWE ROM instead
I downloaded this exe RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
and ran it on the PC - my phone is now back up and running!
Many thanks.
If you ran that without a gold card then you're not branded - which a good thing!!
I have serious problems with my phone that I could really use some help with as at the moment I'm completely screwed - I've already spent hours reading forums but have yet to find advice that will help. Here's whats happened:
I have an A8181 HTC Desire, and I took an OTA update yesterday that bricked my wifi. At this point I thought it would be easiest to root my phone, and after checking that my hboot version was 0.93, I read advice that said to downgrade this to 0.83, which I duly did.
Now, my phone is stuck in a bootloader loop - I get the 3 androids on skatebooards with FASTBOOT in red, and I can choose from:
BOOTLOADER
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN
If I select bootloader I then get:
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
I can access recovery and apply update.zip roms successfully (I've only tried official HTC 2.2 roms as the phone isnt rooted), but after doing so it just goes back to the bootloader loop.
If I select FASTBOOT then I'm just back at the first screen.
I've tried clearing cache and factory reset aswell, but I still can't get past this 2 screen loop.
It's like the bootloader just can't load whatever rom is installed.
Because the phone isn't booting up, I can't use adb or any other pc tools as the device is not detected on my pc - although it does show up in device manager on windows.
I'm close to sending this back to try a warrantly claim, although I'm worried that by trying to fix this I may have invalidated this.
I'd really appreciate any help or advice as to how I can get out of this and get my stock 2.2 back.
Cheers
If your computer using windows, have you installed hboot drivers?
If you have those installed your pc should detect the phone.

You shouldn't have had to downgrade your bootloader. If you can, go back to the newer.
The wifi issue, was widespread on desires, I had it also after a "pushed" update from HTC (european model, unlocked). I downloaded a stock 2.29 froyo. Had to make a gold card also. Took several tries, wipe cache, but eventually successful.
Then, I rooted, and went to CyanogenMod7 rom with clockwork recovery.
Hi guys, i'm very new in custom ROMs and all this exciting stuff - exactly i'm a noob.
so, i got my HTC Desire HD from the repair back and want to have MIUI on it.
first, i had to unlocked my bootloader via htcdev, which worked perfectly without any problems.
then i put ClockworkMod as recovery on it, and tried to upload the MIUI image via adb on the SD Card.
but when i try to select one point in cwmod it does nothing.
i know that i have to navigate with the volume buttons and have to select with power button, but that doesn't work, and i don't know why...
maybe anyone has an idea... i have none.
Phone: HTC Desire HD
OS: Android 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0 (already unlocked the bootloader)
ps. excuse my bad english
I'm not sure why that isn't working, but you can also control CWM with the hardware touch buttons at the bottom of your screen. I think it's "Home" for up, "Menu" for down, "Back" for back, and "Search" for select.

Click to collapse
Thank you.
But i tried them also, and the CWMod logo just gets more opacity and the menu fades out.. nothin more happens.
can i also install MIUI via adb? without navigating through CWMod?
Hmm, sounds odd, I'm not sure why CWM isn't working. How did you install it?
I've never tried flashing a ROM via adb, it depends on whether you can issue CWM commands via adb shell. A quick Google suggests that works for some recoveries, but I wouldn't know for sure.
I've seen a few posts about people having trouble after unlocking with the official HTC tool. It doesn't unlock security to the same extent as the S-OFF methods. I've not tried it myself, did it say anything about allowing you to re-lock the phone? If you can, it might be better to re-lock then try the Advanced Hack Kit method... although again, I'm not 100% sure how that would work and it might be worth asking for advice in the AAHK IRC channel before starting.
again, thank you!
i tried some older versions of cwmod, but they don't even start... the htc logo just fades out, and the display light is on, but nothin else.
is it the right way to just flash a recovery or do i have to uninstall it correctly?
oh and btw.. i installed it via fastboot flash recovery xyz.img
oh i got it
//edit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118865
this one works!
I can assume you have done it but it doesnt cost asking:
Cant you use the power(select) button in any options on Clockwork or just the option to flash it from SD?
My suggestion is to try to take it back to stock recovery and then rooting it in the old fashion way. As preacher said many people coming from the HTC unlocked bootloader are having problems.
I will comeback here as soon as I have a better answer for your problem but for now try to go all the way back to stock!
oh i guess i made obviously a dumb mistake.
i flashed with miui and miui doesn't start and guess what i forgot?...
the backup. will it work, if i try to flash with an 2.2.1 stock rom?
Yes, should be able to flash a stock ROM. I would try to get a stock ROM back on there and re-lock the bootloader - apparently you can do that from the command line. Then use the Advanced Ace Hack Kit from the Dev forum to unlock it, instead of the HTC method.
The AAHK is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821 and if you read the last few pages of the thread, it talks about re-locking the bootloader. The AAHK now detects if your bootloader has been re-locked and will work - but you must re-lock before you use it.
Then you should be able to flash any custom ROM just fine.
Ok here is an update about my problem...
Yesterday i installed cwm and opened the bootloader via HTCDev, HTC SuperTool V3 also said that my device is rooted as i did their rooting-method. So i tried to flash a lightly old version of MIUI because it has shipped languagepacks within.
then i rebooted, and my phone freezes at HTC Logo. Now i tried so much ROMs and even tried to go back to a STOCK Rom, i also tried Super Wipe + Rev HD, which worked neither. now i relocked my bootloader and wanna ask if AAHK is a possibility to rescue my phone?
i don't get any ROM to work... so is it even possible to run aahk?
I started a thread in General here about problems with the HTC unlock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456749
There might be some help there.
How did you try to get the stock ROM back on? I would first try flashing an RUU as explained here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20068991&postcount=5
This will hopefully get a working ROM back on your phone. Then if your bootloader has been re-locked, you should be able to use the AAHK - but remember that you'll need to follow the manual carefully. If the AAHK is successful you're good to go.
i have no real solution for everyone...
but attn1 from aahk rescued my phone like a boss.
he flashed a new recovery, flashed piece of cyanogenmod via cwm, and flashed the boot.img via fastboot - cyanogenmod was running!
then he flashed with RUU and made my phone completely free with aahk.
Hi developers,
I have just today gotten my M8 HTC One S-Off'd, and went ahead with google play edition conversion. It went well, but I missed some sense features. So I tried to follow the tutorial on how to get back to sense, but after rebooting to bootloader - and flashing the 54meg firmware thru fastboot - didn't notice to flash custom recovery. Phone is not booting (bootloop after first logo screen), and recover is a stock one. Now I have tried flashing some random RUUs I found on graffixnyc's website, but the stock recovery says "Finding update package", then "Opening", then "verifying" and then returns with error - exclamation mark in red, and "Installation aborted" message.
I have no connectivity thru fastboot or adb, just this recovery.
Is there any help, or is the device bricked for good? Supercid (11111111), S-off and unlocked bootloader.
Also, seems like I cannot enter HBOOT in any way - holding button up or down... just the recovery.
Best regards
Mike
EDIT: When I downloaded OTA 5.0.1 update from graffixnyc's website, the Verification didn't abort at the beginning, in fact it threw quite different error messages:
"Package expects buld fingerprint of htc/m8_google/htc_m8:4.4.4/KTU84P.H1/356549 (...) or 5.0.1, this device has htc_wurope/htc_m8:4.4.2/KOT49H" and then installation aborted. So I need another OTA package???
EDIT: Somehow I managed to enter FASTBOOT, just holding vol- and power between reboots and it worked finally. Now I'll flash twrp and hopefully it'll go better after that. Don't know what firmware to flash then though to have sense6 and 5.0.1.
Did you make a note of the software version you were on before you flashed the GPe? It would've been helpful to know for recovery purposes. It'd also have helped in case there was an RUU available to make the process easier
Hi guys. One of my friend has this phone. Yesterday night he did these steps:
1. unlocked bootloader (booting properly)
2. flashed twrp recovery
3. flashed su for rooting but didnt know how to update su binaries (booting properly)
4. went to twrp and partitioned external sd card (fat32+ext3+swap)
5. fixed permission
after restarting it got stuck at htc boot logo
so he gave me phone for repairing xD
here's status.
i removed sdcard.. put it in card reader.. n merged all partitions into single one just like it was before partitioning
now, i am able to see that white screen called "software status" (don't what does it called) through which i can have access to:
recovery
factory reset
simlock
check smartsd
image crc
show barcode
so basically, i need to get the installed stock htc firmware working again.
i searched forums and found European stock 5.0.2 fw. so should i flash that zip from twrp on this Indian origin phone??
or should i try factory resetting from that white screen??
basically i want to undo partitioning modifications from os and get the phone working on stock fw just like before. thanks
The "software status" white screen is fastboot. After reading your post, I think that the problem is that the device is rom-less, and I assume it happened when your friend repartitioned SD card.
Since the device is unlocked and you have a custom recovery installed, I'd go and try to install any of the custom roms posted here in the forums.
Check what version of twrp you have because there are some roms that don't run with older versions.
Thanks for replying. I'll try any custom based rom. The recovery is 2.8.1.0 (AZ development flash screen appears before twrp home screen). However, I want to know, if the European stock fm will work on this Indian variant device? Coz I tried to search for Indian / Asian fm files but no luck. How do I get exact fm matching with this one?
By fm you mean radio?
Anyway don't worry about that, because I live in Argentina and haven't had any problems with any rom I flashed.
If I were you, I'd flash this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3249856 because it's pretty much bugless and doesn't have any mods pre-installed.
Just out of curiosity, could you go to fastboot and post the software version number? That'd be useful in case we can find a stock backup for your variant.
