Teathering on T-Mo TP2?

I am contemplating dumping my HTC Fuze and jumping ship from AT&T to T-Mobile just to get a Touch Pro 2, however I just got off the phone with T-Mo customer service and they informed me that you cannot tether the Touch Pro 2 to a laptop or use it as a modem.
Now I am sure the harware supports tethering and this is just something T-Mobile has decided to cripple, but how easy would it be to enable teathering? I hate the idea of paying $350 plus locking into a new contract and losing functionality from my Fuze!

Internet sharing is on the phone and the HTC WiFiRouter works perfectly.

I think what the T-Mobile people were actually getting at is your not supposed to do it.
I think its in the T&C's that if you have a data plan you wont use it through a computer and to watch video etc
(I use it all the time though and they dont enforce it)

You can tether (legitimately) on Total Internet (their old $20 plan) or the new "PDA" plans ($25 and $35, but include messaging.)
You CANNOT (according to the rules) do so on their "phone" plans (Web2Go I think now) but in some cases it will work. They're enforcing this with the TP2 by doing the "automatic add the feature" game based on IMEI, as they have with other smartphones they are selling now (especially the Android ones that won't work at all without it.)
Note that the TP2 has a number of included features (including embedded account management!) that doesn't work right, especially from the browser, if you use the Internet2 or Internet3 APN. You have to use "epc" if you want those to work.
I'm not sure why they'd care about video and such on the TP2 in particular, seeing as it has a Youtube video viewer BUILT IN FROM THE FACTORY in T-Mobile's software load!

Where are you finding this "HTC WiFiRouter"?? (I'm on the T-Mobile version just like you guys)
I don't see it anywhere. I feel like such a newb, lol, even though I'm an ex-cook from my old Wing. So the WiFiRouter thing is pre-installed, right? And it'd let me create a WiFi hotspot for others to connect and use my data? That's what it sounds like.
Am I way off here? Or where the heck is this program? (Welcome everyone)

T-mobile policy on tethering
Per policy it states that this type of 3g HSPCA device isnt allowed to tether and be used as a modem but the phone says otherwise. Also my theory on the last minute price jump on the tp2 is because tmobile can't stop it from being used as a modem on there smart phone data plans like they have with non rooted android devices. As an employee I researched this heavily before buying the TP2 and its one of the reasons why I went for the device. T-Mobile is so proud of their new 3g network but have made a lot of decisions to try and limit bandwidth consumption like removing push internet from the device. But anyway it should work. My disclaimer is that policy changes constantly at T-Mobile so this may not always be so.

Lol. Yea, that's probably true. I wish if we could have the push internet, but we'll get that with custom ROM's! Take that T-Mobile!

Tethering works. I have a Touch Pro 2 with the stock T-Mobile USA ROM. Despite what the T-Mobile representative says, the stock ROM contains the correct application to do this. Programs --> Internet Sharing.
Plug the Touch Pro 2 into your computer via USB and then hit "Connect". Bam, instant Internet tethering. Works well if you're in a bind.

T-Mobile does states exactly this:
"1. Permissible and Prohibited Uses
Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your device and not on any other equipment. Unless explicitly permitted by your Data Plan, other uses, including for example, tethering your device to a personal computer or other hardware, are not permitted."
When I logged in to get details of my Data Plan, here is what I found:
"T-Mobile Total Internet
T-Mobile Total Internet includes unlimited Internet access on your phone, along with unlimited Internet access in T-Mobile HotSpot locations. Access your e-mail or browse the Web on your phone, or log on to wireless broadband access from a T-Mobile HotSpot in one of thousands of locations around the world using your Wi-Fi-enabled device."
I'm not inclined to poke this fire with T-Mobile as I have been a customer for a long time and have been nothing but happy with their customer service; and even before a put a cooked ROM on my last phone (wing) it had an internet connection sharing by default (bluetooth or USB only).

i tether on my 2.99 t-zone plan, they never said anything.

They won't ever say anything, lol, don't worry. Hell, I downloaded a 139 MB file to my TP2 a few days ago, it's not like they nock on my door, saying, are you the account holder of number ******???
Go ahead and tether all you want. If they do ask you, say you were downloading lots of music or something FROM YOUR PHONE. They can't prove anything.
PS, that's the $5.99 T-Zones, LOL. 2.99 would be incredible!

This is one blind statement if I ever heard one!
Tmobile IS your ISP. Tmobile KNOWS where you go and what you do.
Now, whether they will actually take the time to look through their logs and find out who's been going where, that's a different story.
But don't say they can't prove anything, because they can, and if they want to they will terminate your contract, and charge you the ETF on top.
FYI, I've been with Tmobile since they were VoiceStream. In fact I opened the account in Feb of 2001. Not to mention, at some point during my career I've actually managed the entire wireless account pool for a 150 people office, and most of them were on Tmobile. That should tell you something about my level of knowledge, as well as loyalty.

Actually no, his is $2.99. At one point it WAS $2.99; however i have the $5.99 tzones and have used it to tether w/o any issue a few times

The last post was too funny. Seriously though, T-Mobile has little in the way of "monitoring" what data is being sent to your phone. Its more of the amount thats an issue. T-Mobiles logic is that tethering will burn up bandwidth quicker which makes it more likely to hit the data cap and considering whats going on with ATT and the IPHONE bandwidth issue it makes sense. BUT if you monitor your bandwidth consumption and keep it under 10gb, I would say safer would be under 5gb a month then your not rocking the boat. And even when it hits the cap is throttles down to edge speeds anyway so I cant see an issue in this. Now if you live on tethering 24/7 then ya your gonna be pushing it. Customer care can see your data consumption in the system so just call um up and say hey I am worried I might be going over my data limit, lol they will be like blah i know how important blah blah it is to not go over. Then when they shut up they will say you used only 3gb this month so far so your doing fine blah blah blah. If T-Mobile had something in place to detect you tethering they wouldnt have made google remove the tether app from the market. Open source i guess means its open until you do something we think isnt right? I think its still bunk because what happens when someone hits the cap on there 3g phone. nada. And you would be surprised how under used T-Mobiles 3g network really is depending on the city. Theres some rumor that this was planned since the iphone may be going to other carriers soon. I will leave it at that.

question for at&t users

when i got my contract from at&t i got the lg neon with the 10 or 15 dollar data plan for regular phones, not the smartphone data plan. and when i switched back to my dash i noticed all my features that required data (web browser, weather tab, email) all work fine and i dont get charged extra for it.
so i was wondering if it would work with the data sharing too without me getting charged extra?

whats great about at&t is that they have no current way to detect what type of device your using unless it is branded by them, this is cause att can only decode their own imei numbers, it's just like asking them to unlock a tmobile phone.. they can't do it cause the imei numbers are more or less directly related unlocking the device and this makes it confidential or proprietary infomation of the company that licenced the device for sale. they could however just deny the use of data unless you pay for a generic data plan witch is normally about $30 or so witch is what tmobile does if they can't verify what device you have but att has yet to impliment this.

I'm new to CDMA/EVDO carriers, so I'd appreciate if you could answer some questions with regarding to the technology, Verizon and Droid Incredible itself.
A little bit of a background here. I'm using Nexus One on T-Mobile. Coverage in Chicago has been o.k., but Nexus One itself has reception problem which Google seems to have stopped working on it. I'm planning to get a Mifi from Verizon soon as I need internet connection when I start to travel more.
But I have other idea, getting Droid Incredible, and drop T-Mobile. Tether it with my laptop while I'm on the go.
1:Would it be possible to use data & voice at the same time?
2:I'm planning to get PdaNet or some other app to tether it with my laptop. Should I worry about extra charge from Verizon?
3:What's the difference between corporate (44.99) and smartphone (29.99) data plan? I just need to reach IMAPS,HTTP,HTTPS, and PPTP(GRE) servers. Does Verizon block these on $29.99 plan? (Verizon sales are clueless. They just said $44.99 for business "like big business", and $29.99 is for personal use.
4:Rooting this phone. I assume that it's just the matter of time before it's released. But will there be any problem with Verizon?
5:Given Verizon history about being anal about controlling their phones. Did they block features on previous android handsets in the past? (i.e. no file xfer via BT, pics can only be sent via MMS, etc. etc.)

3. id go with the consumer pricing unless you find it isnt working for you, no sense on paying extra if it isnt needed
4. shouldnt be any problem with verizon and a rooted phone, ppl have been rooting droids and eris' since theyve been out
5. i doubt it, verizon cant control what happens to a rooted phone
some of your options may not be available until your phone is rooted, but it would definitely be worth the wait on such a sweet phone

Actually you can't use voice and data at the same time on VZW, but how often do you really need to?

1. No
2. PDANet will work fine - or once rooted you might not even need that. It's against Verizon's TOS to tether, but as long as you don't abuse it they won't know.
3. Get the cheaper plan - the more expensive plan is just a way for them to milk corp customers. You can use Exchange/etc with the cheaper plan.
4. You should be able to root it no problem once the devs get on it.
5. I don't think so - that's in Verizon's past for Smartphones. Heck I had a Motorola Q years ago on Verizon and I could do whatever I pleased...even tethering with PDANet...

Thats why im staying with my nexous one
my wife is with verizon and we got her phone today and its really nice i cant tell at all a difference between the nexous one and the droid but
there basically the same phones
the nexous one is faster but then again it rooted
but i only pay $80 month for unlimited and she is paying $129 for unlimited
i dont care what i paid for my nexous im off contract and dont have to pay 129 dollars a month

Are you able to use the widgets that were introduced with the stock 2.1? For example that News & Weather widget or are they fully replaced / not integrated by HTC in the Sense UI?
If not, are you able to add them with apps or alternative OS versions through rooting?

I read somewhere that for CDMA/1x/EVDO, your phone will still ring when data transfer is in progress, it will only be interrupted once you hit the answer button. This is first and only technological edge that CDMA has over GSM network, IMO. I've always been a fan of GSM/WCDMA network. --- (WCDMA network supports concurrent voice/data. Too bad that there's no 100% WCDMA network in US)
Since concurrent data + voice is impossible, it doesn't make much sense for me to switch to this phone yet. I might just get Verizon or Sprint mifi and be done with it.

one x on go phone plan?

im in a werid situation. the only phone i want is the htc one x. my plan expires the 26th of this month and i dont know what to do the phone comes out may 6th. heres the deal my dad is making me pay my line by myself so he will give the original family plan line to my little brother. so with his upgrade i intend to buy the one x and use the 50$ unlimited plan from their go phone options
will everything work ? the guy told me data wont work on 4g phones. and will a go phone sim even work on a smart phone ? i really want all this to work out because i need a nice screen and camera but do not want a contract. what other options should i look at because even atnt contracts minimum is close to 80 bucks !

are you talking about using an international one x? i decided on a prepaid plan and it works - but i bought an at&t branded micro-sim card from amazon. others are cutting down at&t sim cards. some are transferring micro-sims from unlocked iphones. there are people posting on the boards that the $50/month plan works for them - you just have to be careful about not drawing attention to yourself by your data usage. i am a minimal user so i went for the $2/day when used only plan (i am on personal wi-fi most of the time) and bought a data package.
you should also be aware that carriers like straight talk and net10 are offering $45-$50/month unlimited plans with purchase of their micro-sim cards. you can find out which network they run off in your area - they all use the towers of the larger phone companies.
check out some of the threads in the general forum as well as this one mentioning at&t. may help you. just be aware that having an international htc could mean no access to certain apps. it seems, for example, that google wallet will install but not open (at this time) on an unrooted international one x. could be a function of at&t, but i think it's google. found a way around that for google voice, but not for wallet. don't know if google wallet will install and open on an unrooted phone.

thanks for all the info. i was able to see h20 works in my area. im not buying the international version this is straight up the may 6th atnt released version. thats why im curious how am i going to keep the same number yet somehow use call sms and minimal data. i too am on wifi a lot but i def need 3g for work and gps. im just worried about getting a micro sim card and im hearing a lot of people getting cut off data on atnt once they found out their using a smart phone

there are a couple of people on these boards who are longtime at&t users and know far more about the ins and outs. you might try searching them out in the at&t-related threads in the one lx forum, since you are planning to buy, i gather, an at&t phone. better to know ahead of time what you can and can't do. it may still be worth your while to check out straight talk and net10, however, since the last i looked they were advertising programs for at&t gsm phones that claim to be unlimited for $50/month. no lte, obviously, but also possibly no hassle over a separate data package, though they are making it clear they will pull your account if you go over their "unlimited" limit.

alright i searched around a lot and straight talk does use atnt towers so that may be my best bet i just need someone to help me confirm that if i buy the atnt one x should i let them install a sim card in it ? will it even matter? as soon as i get home i would take that phone out and put in my prepaid one. does atnt prepaid not let u use data anymore for 4g phones? lol so confusing

check out howard forums re at&t prepaid and also straight talk. i got into at&t recently. apparently there have been some policy changes that i wouldn't have noticed since i am not a long time user. one of them applies to smartphone data usage limitations - as in, you have to buy a data package if on one. there are a couple of people on these boards claiming they are using data without a data package on their smartphones and it's a matter of not triggering usage limitations. i have no way of knowing and it's confusing to me, too, so i'm just sticking with what i have till i run into a wall, then i may jump to net10 or straight talk also.

What's the best way to make this device work in Afghanistan?

So I'll be deploying to Afghanistan soon and I'm wondering if I put my T-Mobile account on hold for the duration, I can just use the WiFi that is on base and use apps like Skype to call home. Any military members have any experience with that? So, I guess what I'm asking is, What is the best way to fully utilize my Note 2 for internet access/calling home using WiFi on base? Do I need to purchase a SIM card or something? I'm not rooted but I have experience with rooting other devices and I'm willing to do so, but right now I have no reason to. Thanks!

Yeah Skype is your best bet depending on what fob you are going to be at. If you are at a big fob or base you will most likely have WiFi if not you might be screwed and have to use the mwr to make your phone calls. Another way is to buy a haji phone when you get there, the only thing is you will spend a crap ton of money on buying minutes. How this helps and good luck on your deployment!

Yes you can do as you suggested. I would recommend you install a few other apps too.
Tango - much like Skype
Google Voice - Good for texting when overseas with your USA phone number (get a Google number or port your number over to Google)
A low cost Voip calling app - for calling land and mobile numbers - I recommend WiCall as they only cost a penny a minute as of today to call any US phone number.
Install a few messaging app for good communication fun. Whatsapp, Line Naver,

iirc phone carriers are required to unlock your phone if you are moving to an area they don't offer service. Call T-Mobile and explain you're deploying with the military. They should probably unlock the device based on that alone. You can tell them you're putting your account on "hold" as well. When you get their buy a hajji(I know Afghans aren't Arabs, they're still hostiles) chip and put it in the phone. If hajji doesn't sell microSIMs you can just cut down a regular SIM card and slide it in. Use a real microSIM to mark where to cut or file the SIM card to.
Iraq had cell service where I was in 06-07 and again in 08. No internet though. Depending on what cities you're near, you might get 3G, Kabul for instance MAY have it. I dunno. Someone where you are going may have opted for satellite internet and be looking to unload their equipment when you arrive also. You can round up some people to split the cost if you want.
edit - The SIM card is gonna be more expensive obviously, you'll want to use that if you can't get wifi for any reason, a last resort if you will.
