How is Android Market location determined? - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

I've had 2 Hero's; one from UK and my current one from Asia. I notice certain applications were present in the market on my UK model but not my current one. How is this determined? Is it by the firmware? If I were to install the UK or European firmware opposed to the Asian firmware currently installed would I get different apps?

I would say by your network and location. An IP address already tells the internet where you are located.

i think it has to do with your apn provider settings
if im not mistaken, thats how marketenabler works...
here in the cold nort, Norway, my provider is NetCom, and i can only access free apps, but when i use marketenabler, and fake T-Mobile, i get all paid and such...

Is unbranded and unlocked better ??? what does it really means ?

Hello geeks
fresh Question ???
If i buy online unbranded and unlocked Htc desire in UK
the website says :"completely free from network branding. means that the phone will have no network logos on the outside and no additional network software on the inside meaning you get the Desire exactly as HTC made it".
In reality
Does it means that i should have these application below already up and running ?
1.google map navigation (turn by turn)
2.Htc voice to text keyboard with microphone key
3.voice search
Is there difference between UK Rom version and other countries ?
Or ,is it only the networks you locks yourself in who does change software & rom version ?
I hope the fact that if device is unlocked, It helps with problems other users seems to have in UK with voice input and gps .
Any tips mostly appreciated
froggiedroid
1.google map navigation (turn by turn) this is only US to my knowledge, not other countries, .. not very sure hough
2.Htc voice to text keyboard with microphone key No you will not get that ATM, neither locked nor unlocked, .. its not present by default, you can install an app called "Verizon Keyboard 2.1" or something like that and you will get it
3.voice search No, check answer to question 2
Is there difference between UK Rom version and other countries ?
Or ,is it only the networks you locks yourself in who does change software & rom version ? Language might be different, "local languages" and UK gets both Locked devices ad Unlocked devices, not only locked. Unlocked versions get their updates directly from HTC, while locked devices get theirs from their Mobile Operator (depends on which mobile operator you are locked to)
Plus unlocked means you can put any network's sim card in.
There is a way to get the turn by turn navigation it's been posted on here.

Random question. If a device is bought froma network, and then unlocked, do the updates still go through the network because of the ROM it's running, or from HTC because it's then unlocked network wise?

i was wondering that yesterday but then someone from here told me that you wont be able to direct htc update unless you debrand your phone which is basically installing generic htc rom onto your device using goldcard

[Q]Did anyone knows the APN settings of Vodafone India for Desire?

I'm in India now and using Vodafone India's service. But I can't connect to GPRS network.
I'd activated the Vodafone Mobile Connect and Vodafone Live by dialing 111.
And I'd try every APN settings I can find by Google, but none of then works...
I'm using the InsertCoin 1.08 GB sence ROM
My current APN settings:
Vodafone Mobile Connect, I only fill this info shown blow
Code:
Name:Vodafone Mobile Connect
APN:www
APN type:[default,hipri]
Vodafone Live:
Code:
Name:Vodafone Live
APN:portalnmms
Proxy:10.10.1.100
Port:9401
APN type:[default,hipri]
Now I found CMCC may not be the only the world's worst operator

Use APN Backup & restore (on the market)

My setting is correct.
The reason is Vodafone didn't activate the mobile connection for me though I had call their customer care number to ask for activate
Thank you

No Manual Selection of Network

Hello I have an odd problem. I have an unlocked ZL which has been working fine on AT&T in the US. I travel to London a lot and have the international data option on my account and has always worked fine with my other phones. However after arriving in London my phone is stuck on Everything Everywhere (EE) and they don't have a roaming agreement with AT&T. This would be an easy problem to solve by manually selecting a different network but this is my problem. On my phone network selection, below, APN is not showing up. I originally thought this may have been disabled by the original network (Indonesia I believe) so I flashed the US generic firmware and Nordic but nothing I do makes it show up. Anyone else have this problem or solution?
Thanks

Its DISABLED by your AT&T sim not the phone. If you notice by putting another Sim (Non AT&T) You can then use network search. Also ANY AT&T Branded Phone Network Search is LOCKED. I know your ZL is not AT&T branded but your SIM is which is causing it to lock it. My disapers when using an AT&T Sim, But when putting a T-Mobile USA sim or Orange UK sim BAM Network search shows up..
Also I think AT&T has Agremeants with EE , as EE can roam on AT&T here in the USA, EE is basically ORANGE UK, If they did not have aggremeants your phone WOULD NOT connect to the network. Make sure your data roaming is checked..
Thanks you are correct. Crazy considering they wanted me to manually select a network other than EE.
They're support is sometimes ehh. If they had never been out of the county they probably won't know. How is it over there . Always wanted to go.

UK HTC One X, no mobile data China Unicom

Hey, I couldn't really find anything similar, so making a post. I have just moved to China and brought my HTC One X with me from the UK. It is a Vodafone contract phone, so it is unlocked but running the Vodafone brand software.
I have bought a China Unicom SIM card, of which calls and texts work fine, but there is no mobile data, it just says disconnected. When I go into the mobile data settings, it has the network operator down as China Unicom and network mode as GSM/WCDMA auto. When I put my Vodafone SIM back in there is also no connection.
It have checked the SIM in someones Chinese phone and it works fine.
I'm not really a phone person, I have never modded/rooted or done anything to change a phone, and my knowledge only goes so far, so hopefully someone can shed some light for me.

Done some quick fact check for this.
Not so sure did Vodafone UK offered HTC One X/XL (edeavoru / evita). However, both of them supporting 3G network frequency operate by China Unicom. Make sure your SIM card has access to their mobile network and have APN set correctly if they are wrong/undectable.

Setting the APN has worked, thank you, I thought I was going to have to buy a new phone
Check this
All I had to do to go to the Access Point Name ('APN') settings and change the Authentication Type from its default 'Not Set' to 'None'. After that, my internet is working fine.
It would appear this may be an issue common to a number of Chinese phones, so hopefully this will be of use to other people in the same situation.
It worked on my star N9599T (whats the difference Not Set and None? but it works!)

No internet - Roaming

Hello,
I'm outside my country and when trying to navigate, my data does not work.
I have roaming activated but It's not working.
I have latest official ROM installed.
any ideas? please help!
You should try to connect to another carrier while you are abroad. Or call your home carrier and ask them who they got contract with in that country to access data too.

Not working either sadly
Get the APNsettings for the carrier you are on.
For example, if you were using O2 abroad, search Google for "o2 APN settings" and follow instructions.
