RUU update for T-Mobile UK -- no root!!!! - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

I performed the update on my brand new HTC Hero and I found out I am stuck in the middle of nowhere with no chance to root until somebody fixes the problem. During my reading, I tried almost everything, and the closest I got was to try and flash an update.zip with the original ROM back onto my device. Yet, at the moment of truth just a stupid white triangle with an exclamation mark appeared instead of the other icon meaning the thingh is working. I can't wait to root for a number of reasons, if I am getting this wrong and there actually IS another solution please help :-((
Ciao!

Hi mate,
I'm new to the Android OS and just got my hero as well. The first thing I did with it was to update the firmware (as recommended by Orange). Little did I know that this would prevent me from rooting.
I've tried several steps:
1. The One-Step Root Process
2. Flashing an image with the SDK
3. Rolling back to a previous version of the RUU
Nothing works, anyone have any ideas about how to get round this problem or if there's a way to 'un-update' the device, please help!
FYI: I have an HTC Hero on Orange UK running the latest HTC firmware, unrooted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VZHT389eR4
Thanks in advance.

if your phone is NOT CID locked (no clue about orange) you can go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
and download an older RUU (1.76.405.1_R3) and downgrade, then root and upgrade.
problem obviously is that this only works if your phone is not cid locked, or somebody find away to bypass the cid check on the ruu process or finds a way to do this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559806
on updated rom versions......

Thanks
Thanks for the link, I'll take a look into it.

closing this one as currently it can't be solved.
I've started a thread that looks into this here:

Put in the Goldcard and then run the official RUU (you can get one from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6703172&postcount=1)
It should let you install the stock 2.1. Then connect to wifi, go to settings->About Phone->System software updates and hit Check Now.
I did it that way, worked for me.
Thank you for the reply,
How can I be sure what is the ROM RUU that I need?
Hi AndroHero,
Can you please link me to the rooted versions you mentioned...

I used the WWE version (Link: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe). When i booted the 2.1 rom after going back to stock, I got options to choose the carrier so it could apply the internet and mms settings. Am on Voda UK. Didnn want to install the Voda ROM as i think voda always release the updates much later than the official releases. After setting up the 2.1, I did update and it worked.
Hi,
1. While installation i got an error message 171 (connection lost), it was waiting for the bootloader when it threw the error
2. I retried the whole process twice and the same thing happened.
Can any one assist me?
Thanks ahead.

Reboot the phone in fastboot mode, i think its press and hold the volume down button as you switch the phone on. then use volume keys to select fastboot and select it with the power button. When you leave this on there, run the RUU and it should work. WITH A GOLDCARD (IMPORTANT).
My desire is unlocked, why do I need a GOLDCARD?
I did exactly what you suggested. I moved it to fastboot but I still get the same
ERROR[171]:USB CONNECTION ERROR
This happens after the PC restart the device so it is not a 'physical Connection' issue.
I have my phone unlocked and the SIM working. From what I read, I need goldcard if I wan't to unclock my SIM...
Please advise
I successfully installed the RUU ROM, but I'm not getting the 2.2 OTA... What should I Do?
My phone is unbranded and unlocked, do I still need a gold card to restore to factory state for warranty purposes?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If you purchased the Desire and it was on an x.xx.405.x software version then you don't need a gold card.
Don't people bother to actually absorb information as this is pretty n00b stuff...
I keep offering to help out with FAQs because this sort of information is not clearly stated. But thanks for letting me know. And I presume HTC read this forum and would know our tricks but apparently its still not a problem.

How would anyone know what version of the software his phone had when he purchased it? I, for instance, knew nothing of the "rooting world" when I got my unbranded unlocked desire, so now, after the OTA upgrade, I don't think I can retrieve that information: am I correct?
In order to absorb information, someone has to give it to you. The process is long (for some longer maybe), but I'm sure you were a n00b once and I hope nobody treated you this way.
Luca
That is correct but if you'd read all threads/information logic would dictate that perhaps it's wise to make a note of what it comes with out the box and make sure you have a back up route in case things go pear shaped/need to be reversed. If all you've done is root the phone and not flashed a ROM then you can still check but if you're now on a custom ROM then you're kinda screwed (unless you just wanna be on an unbranded ROM then you can obviously so this).
Easy way of at least finding out if you're branded or not is to just try and flash a stock WWE RUU without a gold card - if it completes then you're unbranded
Yes, I was a n00b once (Android n00b April this year) but I didn't ask any questions - I just lurked and read other posts and learnt by others mistakes and only asked if I wasn't sure what I was doing. I've had previous mobile phones and so knew about checking version numbers so always make sure I know what I have before trying anything like rooting (or the equivalent term for other makes)
Thank you Eddie.
As a matter of fact, I haven't rooted the phone yet: still in the info gathering stage as I just purchased the phone a month ago. I come from "stupid" phones so never had this problem/opportunity before.
I know for a fact that my phone is not branded, but I don't know:
1) which is the software + radio I should download to restore my phone in case I don't like what I get with rooting;
2) which rom to install: in this specific case, the more you read, the more you get confused. I read some people installing the same rom and one saying it is slower than Luancher Pro + stock rom, others that claim that it is faster than anything they've ever tried (and, mind you, they are talking about the same rom!)
3) last but not least, all guides I found in Italian are relative to using unrevoked with windows 7, while I still run xp and it seems that xp poses some additional problems. I just created a virtual machine on my pc to start using ubuntu, but I never even seen the thing!
However, thanks for the help and sorry about being a little snappish in my previous post. I guess we all approach this problem with different attitudes: some would like it to be a real one-click easy procedure and so keep on asking until they find somebody who does it for them!
Ciao
Luca
Yeah I agree to anti-n00b remarks are getting really old. I'm sure many of us have tried searching threads and doing the right thing, so can we all just get over it? I've offered 6 times now to help create FAQs and not one of the anti-n00bs has offered to help.
Anyway, so I understand then that for those with unbranded / unlocked phones it is a simple matter to restore to factory state. Just thinking in case the USB connector broke or something, which worries me a lot because often connections are rather wobbly although I'm not sure how much that has to do with cheap cables or what.

[Q] Two questions

I'm on T-Mobile UK and getting the DHD soon. I've done quite a bit of reading on rooting and I will definitely do it for the added benefits to my phone. I have two questions surrounding the subject...
1. The VISIONary page says to have a 'safety net' ready before attempting to permaroot. Can someone tell me, or point me in the right direction (Links would be nice) to preparing a copy of the stock ROM to reinstall if something goes wrong? If there are any guides please share =)
2. If I needed to send it for repairs would the only thing I really need to do is to use VISIONary to Unroot the phone? What about any apps that required rooting? Would they have to be un-installed first? I assume that in such a scenario once I got the phone back just re-root it again.
Hi and welcome to XDA.

One such "safety net" is to ensure you have all the correct drivers installed on your host computer, just install HTC Sync 3 and it will take care of that. Also download the correct RUU (Rom Update Utility) for your particular region & carrier. You can use this to revert your DHD to the state it was when you took it out of the box.
Here you can find the --> Desire HD Files. HTC Sync will come on the SD Card of your new phone.

Using the above RUU's your DHD will be factory restored. Everything you did will be reverted back. All the apps you installed will be removed. There would be technically no way HTC would know you rooted your DHD.

Thanks for the answer.
How do I know what RUU to use? From my glance I would assume mine would be the: TMO DE 1.39.111. Also know how I can confirm if it's the same version as mine or older? thanks.
If your getting it from T-Mobile UK then you will need a TMO-UK RUU, sadly there isn't one available yet. The TMO DE is for T-Mobile Germany.
You could use a generic HTC RUU, just find the latest version. If you are planning to root, S-OFF, etc... then avoid this --> RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_ 26.04.02.17_M2_release. As this will lock down your DHD.
Thanks again. Though I'm not sure if I shouldn't just wait for a TMO-UK RUU to make an appearance before I root my phone.....Would a generic HTC RUU work for my current firmware? Also wouldn't a generic RUU be a problem if I tried to send it back for repairs?
Oh also I heard mention of a gold card a couple of times here and there. Would this be needed for using an RUU?
No problem at all,
Yes a generic HTC RUU would work. I got my DHD from Orange UK, as it was from the first batch I received it unlocked & unbranded, just a generic HTC DHD. Although carriers will supply you with a branded & locked handset 99% of the time, people still get generic HTC handsets.
If it went in for repairs, T-Mobile will just replace the software for their own anyway.
A goldcard is a modified SD Card that will allow you to flash unsigned ROM's to a locked (S-ON) handset.

[Q] Can't boot up. Stuck on HTC logo.

This may sound familiar to you but..
Some background. Got my Desire repaired (replaced the motherboard because of a well-known reason..). Previously I had a root access and my SD card divided to FAT\EXT. So I got my phone back, it worked perfectly but today it suddenly turned off while it was charging. Now it won't boot up. I see the darn HTC logo all the time. Did the wipe and..restore. It seems that I don't have any update.zip on my card. I have no idea what should I do. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
is your phone rooted? Were you have a custom rom or just a standard one?
Hey, no. After the repair the root was gone. Had the last OTA update installed. I just don't quite get it. Since I don't have that update.zip on the card, that means I can't really get it restored, right? So if i.e. I change my SD-card to another one. How do I get a restore image file? I'm confused..
If your phone is branded you need the goldcard to run again ruu but if it's not just download the latest software and try. maybe it'll help
try running logcat while the phone is hanging on the htc logo
it may give a clue of what is wrong

Downloads from shipped-roms.com freeze after a while. So I've found a PB00IMG.zip file in some other place. Bootloader checks the file and goes back to the main screen. No errors, no update options - nothing.

Thank you guys. As I've mentioned before my Desire isn't branded. It was bought in Lithuania unlocked and sim-free. So theoretically I don't need a gold-card. But one .img I've tried to feed em returned wrong CID error. I've downloaded that RUU and tried to run it. Phone's plugged-in but the setup drops an error (170), says it can't see the phone. Tried to do it with in the bootloader mode. Same stuff. I'm kinda messed up.
HTC says they can take it for the repair so I don't need to send it back to Lithuania, but I still think it should be fixable..
Wohoo! I've managed to get the rom.zip out of the latest RUU and fix the whole problem. Thanks guys! You made my day! We can close the thread now.

Debranding guidance needed from the very expert Guru

Hi Gurus,
Since the last two weeks , I have tried almost all the options to debrand the Htc Desire Orange UK version, but not success, Below was my cell stock information when I purchased it.
Htc Desire Black Edition (PVT1) not brown one
Froyo 2.2
Hboot = 0.93.0001
Radio = 5.10
CID=ORANG001
I wanted to debrand it to generic from the Orange then I rooted it with UnRevoked and S-Off through AlphaRev and executed the file "RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe" from shipped Roms.
After that I got the Radio V2 Fail, When I restarted the cell, there was no display, even the charging light was off.
I contacted a person that has RiffBox, he flashed it and changed the CID from ORANG001 to HTC__001.
My cell new configuration is as below :
Hboot=0.930001
Radio=4.06
CID=HTC__001
Right now I have only fastboot and hboot access with no ROM in cell phone .
After that I tried almost all the Roms from the shipped-roms's bravo secton, they gives 2 types of error upon executing :
1. partition update failed (error on Radio v2 pu fail)
2. signature verification failed.
I want to debrand my cell to generic one , so that I can get rid of Orange stuff.
I am stuck at that point, needed the expert guidance to pass through this situation.
Thanks
No Guru answered till yet !!!
Given that you are s-off and rooted why would you not just install one of the stock rooted ROMs from the second post in this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
I personally would not have changed the CID, can you install your stock RUU anymore?
Thanks 'welshbloke70' for reply.
Well, After having flashed with RiffBox my cell is no longer rooted or s-off.
Currently I have just fastboot and only hboot menu access. RECOVERY is not operational now.
When I turned on the cell, it directly comes to fastboot menu due to no
ROM in cell after flashing. So in this case I can only install from RUU or PB99IMG.zip, the xda link you gave have all the the ROMS but for rooted cell phones.
As now I have changed CID (HTC__001) which is the generic one, so I dont get any CID error upon installing generic RUU.
Any other suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Do you have a Gold Card??? Cause your problem sounds pretty bad. Since you aren't rooted and you don't have a recovery, it is pretty obvious that you can't install a custom ROM.
I guess you tried also the latest version of RUU which is 2.29.405.5 if you are from EUROPE.
From what I've read you can flash an branded RUU or another RUU on a branded phone only if you have a Gold Card. Now I don't know if this applies to you since you are no longer branded, but you can give it a shot if you haven't tried yet.
I think there is a tutorial on how to make a Gold Card even if you can't access the phone or see the screen. I'll look for it and post it here.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks 'UsManyDead' for taking interest in my case. The answers are as below :
1. Yes, I have gold card, for now its useless. Because as I know we need the gold card only if we are going to install a rom that is different from the current cell CID.
In my case I have already changed my CID from ORANG001 to HTC__001 and any generic RUU supports HTC__001 so there is no need of gold card in my case.
2. Any custom rom can not be installed due to fact that cell is no more rooted.
Only PB***.zip or Ruu can solve the problem. I have tried almost all the roms and ruu from shipped-roms. but they give 2 types of errors as I mentioned in my first post. I have also tried 2.29.405.5 many times but no success.
I know the options are becoming very few , but I hope that I will pass through this failure from you and xda community users.
Any other advice will be welcomed.
Thanks
Hello once again. I just read a little more about your problem, which is very rare but found some good threads you should read and try.
REMEMBER TO READ THEM IN FULL ( FROM FIRST PAGE TILL THE LAST ONE ) and maybe post your problem there, might be easier to get help.
First thread: ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880268 ( even if it is for bricked SLCD, something in there might actually help, for example how to get the PB99IMG.zip from a RUU file)
Second thread (a continuation of the first): ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831734
Third thread (where I actually found your exact problem): ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000385 . Someone explains some kind of "voodoo" to be done to repair the error you get, and there are positive results, and I think you can use the first 2 thread to get the PB99IMG.zip.
Give it a try and remember to read them in full to understand. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Image of what you get : ht tp://www.imageupload.org/?d=4D9499D01
Can you still get in to fastboot?

Hi mate don't know if this can help you....i got usb bricked with my rooted and s-off desire. I flashed a an RUU thinking it would solve my issue but of course it just left me with a USB Brick unrooted! You can't write to that and no access with Adb. I got great help from Unrevoked page which fixed me by getting me back to root.
I summarised the process here:

Hope you might have success with your issue. If this does not help directly you might follow the link to the help page on UnRevoked.....

Thank all of you for taking interest in my problem.
At the end I have got success BUT with failure. Here is my story.
1. Erased and Flashed with RiffBox with CID=11111111 (super id)
2. Kept cell phone in refrigerator for only 5 minutes.
3. Installed the new ROM from PB99IMG.zip (PB99IMG_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.zip ) without any error.
4. Kept cell phone again in refrigerator for only 5 minutes.
5. Started the cell phone for the first time and executed setup and went till the Home screen fine.
6. Tried some games and flash intensive web sites, and ohhh the phone rebooted.
It rebooted again and again. Untill I pulled out the battery and put it again after 30 minutes, but was unable to reach home screen.
Again kept the cell phone in refrigerator and phone works for a short time before it starts reboot loop.
So the main problem is rebooting now.
I spent nearly 16 hours on net , reading forums/posts for solution but at the end found that there is no solution except the motherboard replacement.
I am in PK and here is no HTC service center. I bought it second hand so dont have any warranty card/info with me.
So its just like a piece of scrape for me.
Anyways again thank you all for the great help. May be this refrigerator solution could work for anyone.
Thanks,
Ali
Have you tried changing cid back to orange and flashing correct ruu?
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
No, I didn't try to change the CID to orange. And there is no orange related PB** or RUU on shipped roms.
I dont think Orange have done some customization in kernel or any other part.
I have seen threads running the generic version on orange brand phone. So it shouldn't be a issue, however bootloop problem is not related to either generic or orange brand rom , its related to motherboard.
Have you seen any post in which generic rom is initiating bootloop while the orange rom solved it ?
Thanks,
Ali
No Ali, I haven't. Seeing that you are in the dead end, I think that its worth trying everything from scratch. Don't know much about cid change, but could it be that cid is in a few places and now that you've changed it it sort of fights itself ? Will have a look into all this a bit later, I'm far from guru, but with a bit of luck should be able to find some info.

Hi tinky1,
Well, I have complete nandroid backup (boot, data, recovery and system images). I did it when I was rooted by unrevoked (clockworkmod).
Currently I have installed stock rom '2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_ release_159811', so how can I restore my earlier backup (i will again change the CID to orange, no issue) ?
Please remember i can not root now due to boot loop problem.
Any suggestion ?
Ali
So what do you actually have working? Bootloader, fastboot, recovery? Does phone bootloop when (if you can) you go into one of these?
Currently I have working fastboot and hboot. Recovery is not working , it stuck on HTC green logo.
Normal phone startup is also not functional, it reboots itself before it reaches 'Quietly Brilliant' logo.
I have managed to install Cyanogenmod 7 but the bootloop problem still exist. Analyzing the problem.

SOLVED Stock HTC M9 - No navigation softkeys after failed OTA update

Hi folks,
I bought a stock German Vodafone HTC M9 on Android 5.1 with software 2.10.410.1 HTC sense 7.0 and everything had been going fine until Friday, my battery died and when I plugged it back in it looks like it tried to update to Marshmallow, it looks like that failed but my main problem is that now I have no navigation softkeys, it looks like HTC sense isn't loading up as I have no themes either. I tried an OTA update (fails on the "System partition has unexpected contents" issue). Since that happened I've tried a soft reset, hard reset, install an RUU.exe ( get correct rom update utility, Error 131), so far no joy. I was considering installing TWRP and trying to go back to a stock recovery (I was talking to HTC support and they want me to send my phone to a repair centre, I'd prefer to try fix it myself). My question is, would reverting to a stock recovery even bring back my softkeys or am I barking up the wrong tree? I have unlocked the bootloader now and I will probably end up S-off and playing around with custom ROMs in future but for now I just want my phone to work, it's been a weekend and I'm getting phone withdrawals. I'm in work now so just browsing the forums and seeing what other people are doing but nobody seems to have the same softkey issue as me?
Jamie
Fixed!!!!
Great success! Just in case anyone comes looking for solutions to problems similar to mine and wants to revert to stock firmware without S-OFF and finds an empty thread here's what I did ....
The way I went about it you'll need a micro SD (larger than 4GB I think, no maximum size according to Flippys instructions)
I followed this guide from KingInTheNorth up until the point where I had TWRP installed, this guide will get you through downloading files, tools and drivers unlocking bootloader and flashing TWRP. I DID NOT install SU as I didn't want to root my phone just restore it to stock so I could upgrade to Marshmallow through HTCs OTA update that originally broke my phone.

I followed Flippy498s guide to getting back to stock recovery (under the TWRP backups tab), this sheet also lets you download stock recoverys to match your firmware because Flippy seems to be a legend.

Team Win the folks who make TWRP make a fantastic tool, I started out trying to fix my broken phone and finished out wanting to try new ROMS and playing around to see what else I can do, at least now I have some idea where to start!
Have fun!
