So anybody who gets T-Mobile 3G now is able to take advantage of The new upgraded HSPA 7.2Mbps 3.5G network. Phone that are able to take advantage of this are the HTC G1, HTC MyTouch, HTC Dash 3G, HTC Touch Pro 2, Samsung Behold 2,and I believe the Blackberry 9700.
Check your speed using you phone browser at www.mobilespeedtest.com
Here is my speed in Miami, Fl.
Must not be in every market. 3g In phoenix seems to top out around 250kbps...at least right now.
Should in all 3G markets. It might be rolling out to different cities throughout the day.
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/01/t-mobile-officially-upgrades-to-hspa-7-2mbps/
Also try doing the 1Mb or larger test.
Yeah you're probably right. I'll just keep checking through the day. These speeds will nearly make the fee for 3g worth it.
Mine is 541kps, is that good? lol Have no idea about phone speeds.
The way ISPs advertise speeds is in bits. When we download is its bytes. So 7.2MBPS should be equilvalent to 7200 / 8 = 900 Kbytes a sec. So 900kbps should be max on our phones which is in between dsl and cable modem speeds. This is of course on the Tmobile Network. The fastest I got on my Tmobile TP2 was 800kbps full 3G bars.
I'm in the Tampa Bay area with full 3g bars. I did the 1MB test and got 717kb's per second. Not sure how to tell if I improved from before tmobile "upgraded" to hspa

Sound just about right for 7.2MBPS.
WOW!!!! 6283 kbps here in PA

Me too, just about the same, which is an upgrade at least 50% from before. I can't wait to try it out at work tomorrow with a full signal!!!
1774kbps in phoenix right now...pretty decent...
I have always used :
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
However the site posted here gives me much better results, so I think I prefer it. Bit odd though.
Ok guys. When you test it out it gives yous the small download test. You need to retest at 2Mb or higher to see the real speed. I used the 7Mb test to test my connection and was consistently getting 6500Kbps - 7000Kbps
I noticed quite a difference between Opera and Opera 10 Beta. What's the most accurate browser to use?
To get a "true" test I use Internet Explorer
Too bad all this speed won't mean **** because our CPU is slow. You will only take advantage of these speeds when you tether to your computer.
Not sure the test is reliable, got so many reading on my end. 700+kps, sometimes 25kps (huh????) sometime 650++, etc.
I've tried 3 times using dslreports simple mobile test. 1MB and got
~700kb
~800kb
~900kb

It's a common problem and there are many threads on this subject. Sprint is supposedly upgrading their network and this should improve within the next few months depending on where you live and what areas get upgraded first. My 3G speeds suck big time, and my 4G speeds vary depending in which tower I connect to. At my mom's house, 4G is great. In my house, 4G is horrible. At work, 4G is in between the two.
Thanks for letting me know that.. But ill give them until next year to upgrade their towers.

I live in Winston Salem and my experience is the opposite of yours. 4G is blazing fast and my 3G is fast, too. I have noticed that in Orlando, my hometown, both are faster than here, but I attribute that to the not so hilly terrain. The only gripe I have with Sprint is its voice feature. Inside my home, 3G and 4G are good, but I have to switch to roaming only, using the Roam Control app to talk.

That's really interesting i mean the fact that you have it blazing fast in Winston Salem but they can't get it right here lol.
Have you tried the 3g speed fix? I'm in charlotte, I get better speeds than that, but not great. I've been on CM7 variants for a long time now, but I used to get better with Sense ROMs. I'm going to switch to Mik 4.6 and give that a shot for a bit. I usually get anywhere from 500kbps - 1.8mbps, although the last time I got higher than 1mbps was a while ago. I don't mess with 4g since I'm never in coverage other than in the car to and from work.

I live in Waxhaw, and I just got 1.8mbps down. This **** drives me crazy, speeds are up and down all the time. I'll go weeks without getting over 300k and then randomly get faster, but it always goes back.
I'm still on Destroyer and these are some of the fastest dl speeds I've gotten on AOSP (3g) in a looooooong time, so I think I'm going to stick with it for a while and see what happens.

Is anyone pulling higher speeds then 700Kb a second on T-mobile's network? I am in Jacksonville, FL where apparently T-Mobile has recently upgraded the network to 42Mbps. I know that the G2 does not support that top speed, but I figure I should be getting better than 5Mbps when they are advertising 42Mbps.

If its to good to be true then it probably is.
You're getting better speeds than I am. I normally get around 2-3 or 4 Mbps here in socal. A few weeks ago I was getting speeds of 5-8 Mbps before they turned on the 42Mbps. And I'm on the new Tmo radio too.
Are you guys seriously complaining about something like this. Do you get on your internet service provider because they say you have 20mbs which I can almost guarantee you clock no where near that on a regular basis? The speeds advertised are all theoretical. Basically in the perfect conditions with no other traffic on the network you could attain the advertised speed. Our phones are actually not capable of the new speeds. They are only capable of the original hspa+ speeds that are advertised as 21mbs and lower. The new devices that they have for mifi and what not are the only ones that can use the new 42mbs. Go to any other carrier and you will find the same result. Its called marketing (4g anyone) and it will be around longer then you and I.

To me, it's not complaining, but more observing. Especially when, my case I was getting better speeds a few weeks ago compared to now. I understand that more people on the network means more draw and therefore lower speeds. However, one would assume that if a carrier comes out with better service/speeds that older devices would benefit, even though they obviously aren't built for it. I think what's happening here is the same that's been going on, at least with T-Mobile, for the last few years: They come out with higher speeds and the new stuff can take advantage until they get a heavier load and then it suffers until they update the back-haul.
Besides, even though XDA is a technology forum site, it's the General and Q&A subforums like this that make it so people are allowed to have a conversation like this, of which I'm grateful. It could get pretty boring just being limited to just talking about ROMs.
uhh?
if this thread is cause of LATELY my G2 Speeds just got LOW AS HEK,than I'm in them 'Complaints".
for some reason out of nowhere, my speeds have gotten super low...like EDGE speeds. I have 4g icon/H icon and it still running like its on edge.
Market apps downloads takes up to 30 minutes to finish and it only works good on wi-fi.
I've changed my ROMS,KERNELS, & Radios and still LOW SPEEDS.
This has bin goin' on for about..a week and a half now..
anyone else experiencing massive low speeds?
Thanks.

I'm getting 2mb/1.4mb in the Anaheim, CA area, close to disneyland (i'm on vacation) and I currently have about 5.5GBs transferred for the month.
I will update again when I get home in a few days. (Portland, OR) I have been getting about 9mb/5mb there on a regular basis.
And for those of you who are having really slow 4G speeds, you might be getting throttled by tmobile for too much data usage.
I'm seeing very erratic speeds in Manhattan with my new SGS II, but generally I'm in the 2-3 mbps down, 1 mbps up range anywhere I'm inside. Sometimes it is the same outside as well, but occasionally that will spike up to ~16mpbs down outside.

Since when is 2-3Mbps slow? Really?
Try Sprint 3G/4G or Verizon 3G or AT&T "4G". 100-900Kbps is the norm on Sprint, Verizon and AT&T except AT&T has higher bursts. Verizon LTE is quick but it's already slowed down below 10Mbps here and coverage is not everywhere

Obviously I'm not expecting the 42mbps. But they made a big deal about this being the first DC-HSPA+ phone -- it is, in fact, why this phone doesn't have exynos. Sorry to break it to you, but 2-3 mbps is very slow even for HSPA+ 21mbps. This is slower than Sprint's ****ty wimax.
If you're content with 2-3 mpbs, great, I'm happy for you.

It's not slower than WiMAX here, and if you are seeing a variance in speed it's obvious that you are bouncing between two different cell towers with two different loads or one without Dual Carrier HSPA deployed on it.
2-3Mbps for a network with 1 3G carrier which means all of the bandwidth on that sector is shared with other T-Mobile subscribers is NOT bad. 50-300Kbps/Sprint 3G speed is bad. Verizon 3G at 500-1000Kbps is mediocre but acceptable due to the low ping. 2Mbps is decent, not bad, and OK for a HSPA network.

The 2.5GHz network reaches few people. In a market where Clear actually has people using the network the speeds are much lower due to the traffic. NYC is still very much brand new with few WiMAX users, not a valid comparison. Here, it's 1Mbps all day long due to the maturity of the network and the usage
Unless they're on the same tower as you -- they're going to get different speeds, higher and even lower depending on load. Something you can't comprehend. It's not going to be 10+ everywhere. What are you desperately needing 10Mbps at home for anyway? Do you have an unlimited plan with no throttle cap you desperately want to use? I don't get it.

ok, i live in nj area, about 5 min away from samsung headquarters. i've heard people in CA area go up in speed of internet with fc 24 modem, but for me, the speed has decreased alot. OK, you must be literally right down the street from where I am right now. I was actually running some speedtests on both of my phones and the past couple of days the speed has been in the toilet! Lol. I was getting 1.5Mbps down on 3g and the past few days I am right where you are. I am off of Patterson Ave. I was shocked because I didn't change anything on my Epic Touch at all. Maybe it is due to other factors.
Now if people are reporting better speeds in SoCal, I can't wait to get back because my speeds are always good there...well at least the 4g speeds are

I noticed the reduction in speeds as well on FC24, 350DL and 100 UL and just to make sure I wasnt losing my mind, I flashed back to EL29 and ran it again. Speeds went back up where they used to be at 1100DL 500UL. So I think I'll stick with that until we all know for sure what the real deal is.
