I'm currently using the HTC T8285 Telstra. I know that it picks up the 3G here, just in Australia instead of having a 3G icon where the signal is, theirs has an H.
Is there any cab or tweak to either get the H to show up as 3G or have 3G shown beside where is says AT&T ?
Im actually on the Telstra network The icon switches between 3G and H on mine, i think depending on whether the current cell supports HSDPA?

You realize the "H" is better than "3G"?
H is for HSDPA aka 3.5G
i think ryche316 is referring to the label reading 3G AT&T vs just AT&T. if i'm correct, you'll need a registry editor to fix this. launch the registry editor and goto the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting and change the Enable3GLongNamePrefix key value from 0 to 1. soft reset and you'll see it now read 3G AT&T. true this is a minor cosmetic item, cuz if it shows H in the signal meter, you're better off. i've rarely seen mine show 3G. i always want to see H.

Aye ditto, can also use Schaps 3.3 to do the mod too which will allow you to call 3G whatever you want.
Thanks there Trickster. yea that's what I was referring to. I do realize that the " H " is a 3.5G which has a faster download speed than 3G.
Thanks

I just got a Cingular 8525 and immediately upgraded it to WM6 (it had WM5 on it for about an hour). I am in a 3g covered area but I do not think I am getting a 3g connection on the phone. I have the big upper case U in a box, and then I have the signal indicator with an E over it. This makes me believe that I am connected to Cingular's edge network. Also, if I am on the phone and I try to run a sync with activesync the phone tells me that I have a voice call in progress. Any suggestions? AT&T support was clueless.

The U indicator is UMTS - that is 3G. However, most of the newer ROMs replace it with a 3G icon. What ROM did you use? Anyway, also, you may try the reg tweak to enable the BAND tab in the Settings > Phone menu. You can find that tweak in the wiki.

I have the same thing with my rogers phone, what I'm guessing is the phone is designed to pick whatever signal is strongest, (which is usually Edge) and not often-rescan for UTMS/3G.
If you google and download Band Switcher, you can force UTMS/3G at your leisure.
I wasnt aware the USA had 3G yet? I was always told that Edge was the best they had out there from a few mobile operators in the UK.
What Radio stack are you using?
Cingular, now known as "The New AT&T (AT&T)" has 3G up and running in some of it's markets.
No one seems to be answering this question.

We have quite a bit of UMTS and HSDPA coverage here in Massachusetts on Cingular/AT&T.
I noticed HSUPA is disabled in Advanced Configuration Manager on my new Tilt 2. What's up with that? I thought AT&T supported HSUPA?
It does. Maybe ATT is doing that to give more bandwidth to iPhone users...
I'm curious, which option under AdvConfig are you looking at?

Data Connections-> HSUPA support
"Enables or disables support in Advanced Network Settings"
It was set to disabled. After enabling, I still cannot see anything refering to it under Settings-> Connection-> Advanced Network.
Anyone surprised by this doesn't know AT&T very well.

Does the above activation fix actually work and we are left with an icon issue, like you are connected to HSUPA but only show 3G.

HSDPA is enabled by default but it only shows a 3G symbol. I'm getting consistent speeds over 1000.
However, I can't find any of the settings the above posts mention...
EDIT: I read too quickly. You guys are talking about U not D. But for D, what I said above applies.
From what I have heard before, the phone does support the H speed, just that the H icon was disabled probably to prevent confusion among the common (non XDA) user.
I enabled both the HSDPA icon and HSUPA in AdvancedConfig and it works for me.

What program do you use to test your speed?
on the fuze, hsdpa was enabled but att disabled hsupa to save some money for themselves. changing HKLM\Software\HTC\AdvancedNetwork\SupportHSUPA to 1 fixed that. i dont have a tilt 2 so dont hold me to that. if youre just talking about the icon then yes, att does put hspa protocols under the 3g icon.

Is this also in the stock AT&T ROM, because I can't seem to find the option?
There is another thread that talks about this already, but it seems the conclusion was that even though it only shows "3G" it runs at the HSDPA speeds. Mine is over 1000kbps all the time, and I can see why at&t wouldnt want to confuse regular phone users with a big "H" at the top.

There is a reg edit to change it so you will have the "H" at the top somewhere on here.

You need to use Advanced Configuration Manager to see this option.

My original question wasn't about the device displaying H or 3G, but the HSUPA support (not icon) in Advanced Config Manager. Mine showed the option as disabled.
In the end, I think the point is moot. With the ATT rom, my device showed the same speed test results as with the OE HTC 6.5 rom, regardless of that setting.

So are you saying AT&T doesn't have HSUPA in your area, or are you saying HSUPA is enabled and Advanced Configuration Manager is wrong?
What kind of upload speeds are you seeing?
I enabled HSUPA but I am not getting HSUPA speeds....? Is it actually possible with the stock ATT ROM? Or any TILT2 for that matter?
How can i make sure I have ability to connect to AT&T at H+ speeds.
With other phones I have been able to connect with H+.
However with this One X, i cannot.
1. How can i tell if microSIM i am using is 4G (H+) capable
2. How can I tell if my account has been provisioned for H+ service
3. Any particular APN settings needed for H+ connection. I have tried a bunch, and they all only connect to H speeds.
Thanks!
This is not a 4G phone.
4G is completely unneccesary on a Phone and would only drain more battery.
I'm in Sweden and my phone jumps between HSPA and 3G for some reason. HSPA is the "H" as you call it, and will show as H on the phone. And "H" is 3.5G.
If you want to check your apn settings, check out my post on page 3 of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587681
Also, to check your sim, search the sku number that is on it. It is a 5 digit number that should start with 7.

As gurkburk92 said, (unless you've got the actual US version of the One X) you don't have a H+ radio in your phone, therefore, you'll never be able to use 4g.
As for it being unnecessary in a phone... I'd have to disagree...
I've got an EVO 4g and when I'm in a 4g area, songs load WAY faster while streaming music (vs. 3g that occasionally buffers too slowly to listen to a song without skipping) and youtube videos are about the same.
If you're using your phone as a media consumption device, 4G definitely has its merits.

Actually the One X is capable of getting AT&T HSPA+ speeds.
HSPA+ and LTE are two different things. AT&T considers HSPA+ to be 4g, and LTE to be completely different.
As for the ONE X you will be able to use HSPA+. I am getting speeds of up to 10mbps using AT&T HSPA+

You'd have to call and ask. If you aren't on a HSPA+ plan, the CSR can change it for you. The SOC codes (if you get somebody who has no clue) are
HSDPPB - unlimited
HSSMT7 - 2GB
SMTHS2 - 3GB

The 'phone' APN and the 'broadband' APN (used for tethering) are the ones capable of 4G speeds. You won't have broadband unless you subscribe to a tethering package or have it provisioned as a data connect card.
Have any of you guys tried to create the "phone" APN on your One X? When I do so I can't select it (there is no check box to select). I can only pick an APN that is called "wap.cingular". I have my account provisioned correctly for an H+ device (prior device was also H+). I also got a new SIM just for this device and have it correctly recorded with HTC (didn't have a microSIM).
EDIT
Ok I did some more playing and if I type "Phone" for APN it works but if I type "internet", "Internet" or "Internet Only" in the APN Type it is no longer selectable. What is supposed to be written in the APN type box???
EDIT 2
Ok so I've learned from some digging that it's a problem with my account never having been setup for "4G"...Which is odd because I had an AT&T "4G" phone previously (Atrix). So I've never gotten the speeds I've paid for. I love it!

What kind of speeds are you getting? I am curious because I am on a go phone plan and get about 6-10mbps downloads.
Are you getting higher?
The speeds that ATT claims for 4g hspa+ devices are 2 to 6mbps. YMMV depending on network conditions.

So I own a D851, currently on T-Mobile with good LTE speeds in my area but quite often the phone switches to HSPA and doesn't utilize LTE coverage when I need it. I end up having to either switch data off/on or accessing the radio settings menu and setting it to LTE ONLY. I understand the slower network coverage saves battery but to just stay there I don't get when I'm getting download speeds of 9mb on HSPA and 30mb on LTE in the exact same spot. The thing that sucks about setting the radio to LTE ONLY is that I can't browse while on a call. Anyone know a workaround?

I had the same issue with ATT, unlocked phone. Made sure the APN was correct, tried may other APN settings, and finally called Consumer Cellular. They advised I did, indeed, have the correct APN (my first version). They did some type of reset on their end, and viola.
On my OnePlus it was the similar. APN was correct, same APN as the G3, but until I called CC, and their reset, phone would not show LTE at all, only H and H+
apn settings?

What are the apn settings that are working for you? I've tried several times to address this issue with CC but lte STILL isnt working on either of our 2 devices. Had no problems when used with an att account.
I am still having this same problem on my LG G3 (vs985) on Cricket Wireless
I hace an htc m9 sprint. I have some issue because I cant select just 2G (when I'm in bad reception area), or in my signal bar there is just a G (dont know If I'm on 3G or 2G).
So I want to know if its ok to select that my device is not sprint in aroma (for custom roms of course). I'm not S-OFF.
Or there is any way to force my sprint version to show H, H+, E Icons on signal bar instead of GSM?
Nope, it is what it is. G is for gprs which is basically 1.5G. If your phone cannot lock onto a higher bandwidth there is nothing you can do because it simply isnt there.
No matter how many rain dances you do or human sacrifices you make, you can't make the phone do it.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Please search via google for the difference between GSM and CDMA. Since those are two different technologies chances are high that you can't get high speed connections if you try to use a CDMA device on a GSM network or vice versa. Hardware and partition layout differ between the CDMA and the GSM versions of the M9.
The options in the aroma installer are meant to be chosen according to the hardware you're using and not according to your actual carrier.

I know about that, but the speeds are good. Like any other 3G phones. I just want the options to force for example just 2G when I'm on 3G low signal area. and show the corrects icons. The phone was from a friend first, and he told me that before upgrading, shows H on signal bars. If I go to about, network, here say HSPA
