Push Gmail now avaliable on Windows Mobile - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-sync-now-with-push-gmail-support.html
Google Sync had already given the ability to sync your Google contacts and calendar via Activesync but now Google has released the holy grail: push Gmail via activesync.
http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html#p=winmo

i did the setup about an hour ago..i saw the notice and decided to try...
it has still some issue..
you have to set it to download the whole messages or it will not retrieve later the body (i mean, download only headers and then body manually later doesn't work...) and i can't read attachments...
anyway the push is working good.....hope the will improve the sync anyway

Sweet. Got a little bit of that Chatter functionality back with one mailbox. Thanks!
Is this going to kill my battery though?

It's not really working for me. I have to manually tap send/receive to get any new mails, which defeats the purpose of push.
Previously, I had forwarded all my Gmail to another exchange server which I use to sync with my phone. Often, my phone will have new mail pushed to it even before it shows up on my desktop Outlook.
I'll give this a try for another day or so. But if it stays like this, I'm going to have to go back to my old ways...
Edit: Ok, I actually don't have to manually send/receive to get mails. But apparently, I have to wait 10 minutes before it's pushed to my device. Not good...
Edit2: Seems like the timing improved to 3 minutes, but as previously mentioned, attachments don't work. That's a deal breaker...

Ya know.. I just went through and reconfigured everything away from google syce(Active Sync) and now they do this..
well anyways.. now that people are trying this.. I stopped using google sync to sync my contacts because it was killing the quality of my contact photo's... anybody else seeing that problem..???

That happened to me when I was syncing my contacts to my desktop's Outlook. So it doesn't surprise me that the same would happen with Google Sync. I've since stopped syncing my contacts and just used PIM Backup to backup my contacts everytime I want to hard reset or flash to new ROM.
This is off-topic but does anyone know whether syncing contacts with Microsoft's MyPhone messes with the contact photo quality?

omg I have been waiting for this day for years. crack open the champagne. this is glorious! oh, i haven't checked out the attachment issue mentioned about. i guess it is time to go in and check all of those settings. and i finally feel an urge to organize my labels and stars in gmail better!
Edit: tested and attachments worked fine. everything seems fine, but it took 7 minutes for me to get it. maybe that is because the ping settings (i don't know that much on that topic), or maybe gmail servers are slow right now from the flood of new use. it looks like iphone users got it too, sigh.

yeah it's not pushing like it should for me either. I have better luck just setting up a new account and having it check every 5 mins. I'll give it a few more days and see what happens.

Myphone doesn't mess with photo quality.
However, neither has Google sync when I have used it for my contacts.
Lastly, when you first set everything up, the mail does have a delay before it is pushed to your device. Once you have it working for abut a day though, it takes less than a minute for me.
And there is no issue with attachments for me either.
Oh and the amount that Google Sync will drain your battery life is obviously dependent on how many messages/appointment changes/ contact changes you have in one day.

So don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't get the mail function to work, no matter what I try I get the same error code from activesync:
0x80004005
The server
m.google.com
Username: [email protected]
Don't know what I could be messing up.

well, daa connection always on for push is battery killer...usually i keep my data connection disconnected automatically after 1 minute.
no problem for push to me too...in less than 1 minute...

My push is working great so far. less then 30 seconds.

I have exactly the same problem...
I found on Google Help site, that it's maybe a problem of number of mail in your mailbox

my inbox contains nearly 1000 mails and works great....maybe a number of labels issue...i've got few labels...

How did you guys get attachments to work?
I currently have my gmail forwarded to an Exchange which sync with my phone. I could see attchments perfectly.
But when I try to sync with m.google.com, attachments are no where to be found. An email that I know has attachments shows up without it. There's no link to the attachment nor is there even a paperclip icon.

how did you got this to work? it doesnt push to my TP2. I have to manully press sync to get new mail.

Open ActiveSync on your device. Tap "Menu" then "Schedule". If you select "As items arrive" that indicates the push function. All other settings are pull functions.

Help: Can't get my googlemail account to push mail to my htc touch hd

I've added the account but email only downloads when i click on send and receive,
the enable microsoft direct push is on but it doesnt seem to have any effect.
any ideas?
gmail won't push to these devices using that method.
you gotta try seven.com or other alternatives...a search will turn up a lot more information, but seven is a push alternative that works
Got it working in the end.
Solution was fairly easy after all.
Thanks
how did you get it working? as far as i knew gmail doesn't offer a push service..?
Bit of lateral thinking in the end
I found out that Windows Mobile 6 supports Hotmail push email for free without any added software. It's built in to the operating system.
I simply set my Gmail account to auto forward all email to my hotmail account. It's an option within the settings.
Voila free gmail and hotmail pushed to my phone without any 3rd party software.
Well done.
I use SEVEN and it's a wonderful piece of software, best of all it's FREE and uses the in-built mail application on your phone. So it runs in the background and then the windows mail does the rest.

presently i'm also using seven to push my mail since mail2web started charging for its push services.i have only one problem with seven.i don't get any alert when i have new mail?do u? my notification for new email is one but nothing happens.hummm...
my only issue (and its only a minor one) with seven is that the message text preview normally shown on the mail envelope icon is no longer there - all it says is 'click to view message'.
Is there any fix for this?

i wished i found this thread earlier, so i didnt have to create one!
but i thought about doing what binning did, but its not a real solution, you can reply but your going to be replying with your hotmail account rather than your gmail account but you get all the messages
google did release sync, but right now its only calendar and contacts from what i know of, as of an actual email sync, i heard rumors theyre working on it, but lets hope they release it soon.
but another thought is, the only thing thats missing right now is the gmail push server. blackberry bypassed this by using their own BES but only restricted to BBs obviously.
lets keep our fingers crossed and hope that google will release a gmail sync!!!! =]
edit:
im also curious but havent had time to look into it, a couple of friends of mine have the g1, the g1 supports gmail push, but how can we wm users get this to work on OWA!! if g1 supports gmail push shouldnt it be possible for us? i mean like a standalone push service rather than having to forward or use a separate server like the BES?
is seven.com free? When I try to download it, it takes me to my country operator. The link then takes me to my country's website which charges me 15$ per month to use it? I already have a 5GB data plan, why am I going to be charged 15$ to use seven.com?

Look for the Beta program instead. That's where you'll find the free software download.
Thanks furrypotato(good nick). I figured it out.
Is it reliable? I noticed that sometimes ill get the email directly (testing by sending email from another account via PC). and sometimes I wont.
Also, the internet remains connected right?

Problems: Google Exchange Server (Activesync)

Hey guys, since a few days I have massive problems with syncing my device with google (contacts, calendar, emails). I used activesync with the snyc settings to m.google.com and suddenly it tries to sync always the entire content from new, every time stating that there are changes done on the server side which requires entire resync. does anybody have the same issues and a solution to that?
I could never get it working right. I use goosync (payservice).
I use this for contacts and calendar but couldn't get the email portion to work reliably. I use IMAP for gmail.
mine syncs fine.

same, works perfectly for me.
Although i only use google for calender and e-mail, i use dashwire to back up my contacts.
You have probably already tried it, but have you disabled all but one and checked it to see if you still have the same issue?
If it works properly with just e-mail for example, then add in calender and try it again. If it works then add contacts back in or if it breaks remove calender and try contacts instead.
Might help you track down whats causing the issue.
Just an idea.
Mine syncs fine as well. At first I had problems with syncing because I never set up a Calendar or Contacts with Google, so I unchecked everything except Mail. Try that.
Check this out from wmexperts.com:
Has anyone else noticed that they can't sync Google Gmail via Activesync over the past few days? At first I thought it was just me but soon came to find that the "Error Synchronization" message was being displayed on other Windows phones.
The official error code is 0x8600050c (Communications Error) and in looking over at Google Mobile's Help Forum, there are a few solutions available.
The first suggestion is to delete the current Exchange Server relationship and re-create it. Another solution suggests to un-check the email option in Activesync, reboot the phone, re-check the email option and sync. The latter seems to have the most success.
We couldn't find anything official from Google on the cause of these errors or of a "official" solution. If we hear of anything we'll pass it on.

Yes I agree, but to Google's defense, they say this is in Beta, but we are spoiled with great Google products so we are expecting too much. I do wish they would put more effort to it though, it has been like this since November when I tried it and I haven't seen anything improved in 3-4 months.

Oh don't think I am bagging google & all their great products & freebies.
But it just seem they set expectations so high, that they use the excuse of "beta" forever before releasing anything (witness gmail was an invite forever!).

I had the same problem a few days ago. I deleted the Exchange Server relationship and re-created it, and it's worked fine since. I've had similar problems periodically in the past - I chalk it up to it being a free service.
I got google sync to work, just got my touch pro2 on sunday. works with my main google calendar, saw a user around here recommend ActiveGCSync for additional google calendars, will try that tonight. The only problem I had is i initially synced all my gmail contacts to my phone (most without names or phone numbers), so then I unchecked 'contacts' thinking it would take them out, but instead it removed ALL the contacts from my phone But now all my phone contacts are backed up in my gmail I guess I will have to clean up the mess manually and sync them back up...
I spent a good part of my day so far editing all my gmail contacts and merging duplicates and the last tihng I did was set up a bunch of new 'groups' under the contacts in gmail. I was hoping that after I sync'd back up that I would be able to use the google created contact groups as a means of filtering my contact list, but this seems not to be the case.
From searching around here I ran across a program called 'Seven' and others, which I will explore if there isn't another way. But I was hoping someone could give me some ideas other than individually editing the "Category" of each contact, which seems to be the field which it looks at for "Filter" under the menu soft key.
Thanks

Do you sync google contacts that you have put into groups, and then can you use the TouchFlo contact list to filter them by those groups?

Exchange sync not working

Had the Desire for about a week and like it a lot but will have to return it because Exchange sync doesn't work and that's a key feature for me.
1. Set up account and set 1 home screen to the mail widget and for a couple of days it worked perfectly until I saw new emails on the home screen widget that didn't appear in the mail app itself! How can the widget apparently be more up to date than the source of the data - the mail app?
2. After this could no longer sync e-mail - it appears that contacts and calendar sync but e-mail shows "sync protocol error"
3. Removed account and set it up again and it worked perfectly for about 24 hours and then exactly the same thing happened. Removed account, removed battery, reset account and its working again....for about a day before I get the same result (home screen widget showing e-mails that aren't showing on the mail app itself and I get sync error).
4. Removed all apps and reset to factory settings and set up account again but the same thing has happened again after about a day. It seems that if it tries to sync and can't connect because there's no signal eg I'm on underground then it locks and can no longer sync
It's Microsoft Exchange server 2003 SP2 and colleagues have no problem with i phones or blackberries and I've been using WM phones for years without any problems. Unfortunately phone is useless to me if this doesn't work and disappointed that HTC claiming feature that in my case clearly doesnt work
More information on above
Forgot to say that although I wasn't getting any e-mail update I was able to send e-mails all the time that this was going on! So I could send but not receive.

After posting the above, I had this happen again this evening. If occurred when the connection changed from "H" to "G" I'm missing 55 mails
I'll have to try and figure out what's happening
I've had exchange working great for the last 3 weeks. Then it decided to stop working. I've deleted the account and re created it and no joy. Just won't sync. I'm gonna try with moxier now and see if that works.
Sent from my HTC Desire
Identical problem here with my Desire.
It is not just a simple receive problem because I can delete emails from the main "Inbox" folder, than switch to the "Deleted Items" folder, sync and retreive the emails I've just deleted.
But syncing the main "Inbox" folder is not working anymore.
Seems like internal index data for that folder is broken.
This is not a server problem because just deleting the sync account and re-creating it magically fixes it until something screws up again.
This is clearly a case of bad application coding. Damn try-catch statements
Had the same problem myself on 2 different phones, I found that going into account settings and doing a save without changing anything (it says it is checking your password) fixes it.
Seems to happen if you make a lot of changes via outlook and the phone looses its place.

I wonder if the application event logs on the Exchange server will give more information on the failure? Is SSL set up correctly? Some people have been having problems with self-issued certificates.

Funny you mention about it breaking when going from "H" to "G". I thought I had seen bandwidth related success with my exchange syncing. On WIFI, I could sync the whole inbox, but I would get failures when trying on 3G. I then reduced the inbox to "last 7 days only" and it worked. Going back to higher bandwidth, suddenly I could have the whole inbox without sync errors.
Deleting & recreating Exchange sync account works
For me, deleting and recreating the Exchange sync account workedto get rid of "Sync protocol error". Not funny, but at least there's a way out.
So far so good...
Suspecting some local index file is broken if the sync task is suddenly aborted, I have avoided killing any task and guess what ? So far so good...
Will keep you informed.
P.S. Even if this is the real issue, the sync code is BROKEN.
Hi,
Has anybody gotten to the bottom of this? I've found several threads about the same error across several HTC phones on several different forums.
Deleting and re-adding the account seems like a last resort?
All my contacts are synched via Exchange so if i delete it i assume i lose all of them? And then would i lose corresponding text messages? Anything else? Do all my links to Facebook, Flickr etc get lost? I can see some weird strings of code in my contacts on Outlook now so is the Desire clever enough to pick these up and link everything back together again?
If i can get everything back by just re-adding the account then I'll give it a go but it really does seem far from ideal.
Hi all,
Sorry to bump but i've still not taken the step of deleting my exchange account through fear of losing information.
Obviously it will delete my contacts but will it also delete corresponding SMSs, links to facebook, twitter etc (in Outlook I can see some funny code strings in each contact which i think may be the links)?
Basically, will anything be permanently lost or will i simply need to re-add the account to get everything back as it was?
Is there a way to back up my contacts first? HTC Sync?
Thanks
When I removed an Exchange account from the stock mail app it didn't remove the linking data (which appears in the notes field of your contacts). And there would be no reason for it to delete SMSes, although with the contacts gone, it may not be able to link the phone numbers to names.
HTC Sync could sync your contacts to a separate Outlook installation, or you could use one of the many backup apps (search around here for reviews).
I've only had my Desire for 24 hours but I elected to go with Touchdown right from the get-go after advice from a colleague. So far, it's working a treat (fingers crossed it stays that way). Is anyone here using TD and experiencing these issues, or is it just with the native mail app?
I have a simular issue where Exchange mail stops receiving and sending emails. I only pick up that there is an issue, when attempting to send a email.
This happens regularly, and I have reported this issue to HTC.
My fix when this occurs is to untick and retick SSL option and save.
Well i've removed and re-added the exchange account and so far everything seems to be working ok. Will keep you folks posted - hopefully it doesn't happen again!
Chaps,
Just joined, but I think I have your answer... Task Killer. If you run any of the task killer apps, they can kill the exchange as it is happening, leaving the inbox status in a corrupt state, and the only way to fix this is to delete the account and start over. But then, if the task killer kills the sync, you will have to do it oveer, and over again. Task Killers are great for killing the main apps, but use them on the desire in manual mode only, and only kill the main apps, not the background processes.
Regards
Jaffa
I don't believe it is caused by task killers - I use Advanced Task Killer but it doesn't even list email as open even though it is. I noticed my inbox started having issues after changing sync from 7 days to 14 - it kept re-downloading the last few messages, then after 1 day simply stopped updating the inbox. All other folders fine. I suspect it's a space/size issue - some reports from POP users sound similar. HTC / Android really need to address this. Slowly getting sick of my HTC Legend...(Legendary failure!)

Contacts

Hi, i`ve had my Desire a few months now, (first Android device).
I decided to sort out all my contacts via the Contacts manager on the Gmail website, as i had loads of them sort out, my old phone hadnt sorted them very well at all so i had to re-enter every contact.
What I`ve noticed is......IF i add a new contact (or edit an existing contact) via my Desire, it`ll stay on the phone ok UNTILL SYNC has occurred, then it resets all contacts Purely to what is on the Gmail site.
Is that normall?? Surely it should update the website with the new Contact ?
The only real way for me at the moment is to add a new contact via the gmail site, this way i just Sync phone and it appears but i should be able to do it from anywhere
cheers
I think if the contact has the same details, then it'll merge them or something if the contact is still on the Gmail server. Only way to get around it is to delete it off the server and phone then put it back in as a Gmail contact. Or delete it off your phone, make sure it syncs with the server then put it on or edit it. Something along those lines anyway. Sorry if I have gone a bit wobbly with my answer.

i tried add a `new` contact earlier today, as a Gmail contact from phone earlier today, it didnt merge nothing as i was carefull to pick something random, perfomed a Sync, it was removed from phone, not on Gmail site....even as a Gmail-contact....
It shouldn't be doing anything like that at all :S maybe if you remove the Gmail account and re-add it on your phone it might help. Just a weird thing to happen.

agree, should not happen. seems that it is only using a 1-way sync?? I am also using Gmail's contact management with my Desire and it syncs 2-way, tried it with a contact and an additional phone number for instance. Added it on my Desire, sync to Gmail.

It shouldn't be doing anything like that at all :S maybe if you remove the Gmail account and re-add it on your phone it might help. Just a weird thing to happen.

Gmail app delay receiving mail

Am I the only one who's disenchanted with the Gmail app on Android? I was hoping it would be better with my Nexus, but nothing has changed.
It doesn't seem like true push. If I set Gmail up as an exchange account in the mail app, it receives my e-mail and notifies me within seconds of sending a test message. The Gmail app randomly notifies me within about 15 minutes or so. Call me anal, but I like to receive my e-mail as soon as possible (sometimes it's important) and I don't see why there's a delay on the official Gmail app.
I know this has been an ongoing issue for some time with Android and my co-worker claims that he's perfectly happy just using the Gmail app, but my experience is that the Email client receives e-mail faster and that's important to me.
I've been using the gmail app for a while on 4 different devices (N1,G2,Sensation,GNex), and I've never noticed more than a couple second lag receiving emails. I have noticed something since 4.0.4 or possibly the latest gmail update. When I mark an email as read on my computer, the notification no longer clears itself on my phone. I have to manually clear it.
It can be strange, and in some cases frustrating. More often than not, my emails come really quick (as they should). There has been a few occurances where an email was delayed by several hours.
And it does seem as though the mail app works better than the gmail app for push email.
Edit: I only use the gmail app, but have used the mail app in the past.
Never had more than a 30 second delay personally.
See, my co-worker swears he doesn't notice a delay either, but I have tested it over and over. When I have notifications on for both the default e-mail client and Gmail, I will get a notification immediately from the e-mail client and nothing from Gmail. More troubling, when I open Gmail, the e-mail is not there yet. It's like it's on periodic check, instead of push.
Currently, I have notifications turned off for the Gmail app and use it to sync everything, then have Gmail set up as an exchange account and only have it pulling in e-mail (no contacts or calendar). It still seems a tad redundant, but its' the only way to ensure that I get my e-mail reliably.
I've not noticed any delay with using the app.

No delays here either. I relay email from POP3 accounts to Gmail for the push functionality and it works flawlessly.
All good here too. Matches my desktop Gmail timing. Btw I love the Gmail app its the best damn email experience I've ever seen on a phone, I use it constantly.
I can't be the only one having this issue. Is it possible that no one here knows any different simply because they haven't tried it as an exchange account through the regular e-mail app? Again, I have had this issue on pretty much every Android phone I have owned. And I can duplicate it any time.
Would anyone care to add Gmail as an Exchange account through the e-mail app and then send themselves a test message? Let me know if you get it in both apps around the same time. In my case, it shows up instantly in the e-mail app and won't show up for several minutes in the Gmail app unless I push the sync button manually.
i've noticed delays too. really frustrating because i have no idea what can be done about it...

Nothing that I know of, because it only seems to affect a small percentage of users. I can find a few posts on the internet with other users complaining about the same issue, but most people who reply say they have no problem (just like this post). It makes me wonder if I created a completely new Gmail account and tied it to my phone, if I'd get e-mail instantly on that account.
Unfortunately, that's not an option. I've had this address for years.
How long is your delay, less than a minute? I send myself a test email from my corp work email and it comes thru in less than a minute.

The delay varies. Sometimes it's instant, other times it's anywhere from a 5-15 minute delay. I always get the e-mails instantly in the e-mail app when Gmail is set up as an exchange account.
The moral of the story is, it's not reliable. I can never count on getting my e-mail in a timely manner in the Gmail app.
Sign in to the Google Talk application and make sure you're always signed in. I believe that the gTalk-connection is used for push-messages, so if you're signed in into gTalk, push should work.
I also had the delay once, after I restored a backup of the gmail data after a factory reset(actually, yakjuxw -> yakju). I deleted the gmail data and re-configured it. That fixed the problem for me.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I have the gmail issue (won't ever recieve push email...have to manually sync) AND I cannot sign into GTalk from my phone.
I wish I could fix.
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but was there ever a resolution to this? I'm having the exact same problem on my HTC One X (AT&T).
Gmail or Gtalk delays are due to router (firewall issues). Just forward the necessary Google ports, and you'll be good to go.
