It already is multitouch, but anyway, to answer this question - multitouch allows you to type faster - if it weren't multitouch, a keystroke may not be registered to the correct key if you're hammering away at the virtual keyboard because the phone won't know which key to register the keypress to, especially if they keys are next to each other.

Hi
Just wondering if Desire will have same Nexus One (Speak-2-enter-text in text msgs & Google Maps etc) feature on it, plus all other cool features in N1 (as I don't own N1, nor I have used any Android phone yet so don't know if these features are in Android build or only for N1).
Can we also start a poll to take member's opinion which phone they think is better between HTC Desire & Nexus One...
Thanks
K7
None of the features are N1 only they're just features of Android 2.1 which is what the Desire runs on
According to cnet, the voice to text function is not there (out of the box)
guess it wouldn't be long before someone makes it happen
is an internet connection required for the speech2text function?
You could just install the stock android keyboard to the device to use it.
Although HTC's is incredibly accurate and seems to be able to predict exactly what you want no matter how ****ed up you mish mash at the keys
So while HTC Desire's Sense Keyboard does not support Voice to Text, the user can (without modding) switch to Android Keyboard and enjoy speech to text? Please can you confirm that? I was about to un-desire Desire because I so much expect to use S2T for posting online.

Assuming you can install the android keyboard without root, yes. One can install other keyboards without root (swype for example) so i don't see why the stock android keyboard would be any different.
There is something else to keep in mind. Just because you might be able to install the keyboard, the actual underlying support may have been removed. I don't have the desire rom installed on my nexus anymore or I would check to see if speech to text abilities were even there.

Speech to text has been there since 1.6 though, for google search and translate.
There is absolutely no reason at all why HTC would remove this they just haven't included it in their keyboard.
This means that the ability to get Speech to Text is already there embeded in the phone, you just need a keyboard with the "Speech to Text" button to make use of it in messaging.
As I m spending well few hours everyday 2 decide about which one
I should get Desire r N1... It's so tough 2 decide 1 of these 2 devices
as I like few things in N1 & few in Desire........ Text 2 Speech is
some thing I don't wan2 compromise on (I've read some where
that T2S is not very accurate at the moment but I m still so
fascinated by it), so if there is no such function available in
Desire....then I will go 4 N1.

If this functionality isn't present in the Desire upon release am I correct in assuming that someone will release a ROM where this is possible?
and also if its true that its just the keyboard that needs replacing is that something you need root to do? or can you just install a new keyboard? (Bit of a noob here)

That is why XDA is the place for all your rooting/ROM flashing/making-my-phone-awesome needs
You don't need to be rooted to install a new keyboard.

If that was directed at me...I know you don't need to be rooted to install a new keyboard. I learned that when I had my MyTouch and installed the HTC_IME keyboard from Cyanogen.
If it wasn't...my bad

2 b honest haven't checked it yet properly... Been busy at work. Plus it's my 1st Android experience, so I have quite few questions... Till now have only made few calls & used Google Maps which seems lot more better & smoother than WinMo.

Could everyone please keep thread on topic and stop posting off topic pics.
I would assume you have the Speech-to-Text feature on the Desire, as it was previously mentioned, it's an Android 2.1 feature, not a Nexus One exclusive feature. You also don't need to install any other keyboards, as the Desire Sense keyboard has the key already, as seen at 3:12 in the following video:

Lool, nice find, I have watched this video 2 times and did not pay attention to it , ..... than its definitely there glad to see it.
Trying to get the HTC keyboard for my phone cuz let's face it, the android keyboard sucks. I've been following this thread over on the XDA Nexus One thread and have followed it exactly installing both APK's. Each time when i long click and select Touch Input, no keyboard shows up on the screen.
I'm not exactly sure why it won't work since i have installed several other keyboards over the past.
If anyone knows how to get this working, or is experiencing a similar issue please let me know.
Bump
Seriously? Nobody. The android keyboard sucks haha and my swype expired.
lol dude, not clue why it doesnt work, i tried downloading the v20 apk from the N1 forums, it installs but when you switch input methods it doesnt show up so stuck in same boat

eh ShapeWriter is okay. I really like swype a lot better tho. oh well, at least i know im not the only one who can't get the HTC keyboard working.
Not working on Diamond 2 also...
Physical kbd FTW!
working keyboard for android tilt 2
first you have to go to the xdandroid startup icon and make sure the model is on tilt 2 mode, then boot. just like using the regular keyboard. able to use fn key to enter numbers not like when they are all at the top.
I think you have all seen the problem with multitouch (or dualtouch, as u wish). I have been reading a lot of info on other sites, including this, but no one can exactly tell, if this problem can be fixed (for example with new ROM or with something else). I have read in the summer that when the froyo comes, then this bug will be fixed, but as I see now, nothing's changed. So what do you think, can this bug be fixed on this device?
Its a matter of the touch-pad used on the device which doesnt support true multitouch..
So in short..
NO..
the multitouch problem on the Desire cannot be fixed software-wise..
Okay. But I don't understand. This is because of touchpad. Ok. I don't need multitouch, dualtouch is enough for me. But why there is a problem with x and y axis, when I cross two axes. Why can't I somehow change values, when x0 would not stick together with x1. So that the values of x0 and x1 will only be equal, when two axes are on the one straight line.

I think because the touchpad is a single-touch pad, but the driver (software) throught some workarounds make possible to detect 2 "singles" touch through the different positions on the 2 axis..But when you cross the 2 axis the workaround doesnt work well (and no solution to make it works)..A touchpad like that will never detect 2 multitouch correctly..Fortunally htc used an other new touchpad for the new smarthphones (wildfire, evo, desire hd..)..
No solution
is it possible to change touchpad from desire to new one like on hd or evo?

Its simply because of the algorhythm the touch panel uses to determine the 2nd finger location

NO! For starters there diffrent sizes not to mention all the driver issues and the fact that every desire rom in existance would give you a black screen, because they use desire touch screen drivers lol

Why would an input driver mismatch give you a black screen? The touch panel != screen. You would just not have touch input unless you could port the drivers.
Man dont u get it? They have completely different sizes! And all this work and risk just to be able to play 3 or 4 more games...?!
Hardware mods on a cell phone, really?!?

Sorry, man. AFAIK, this is entirely a hardware issue. And while Android is OSS, mobile phone hardware isn't really your desktop tower ATX plug-and-play kinda hardware.
Look, if you're asking questions like "can I replace the screen on my cell phone?", you need to take a step back and think about what you're saying.
If you're interested, I know that CyanogenMod comes with a DevTools suite that includes "Pointer Location", which is actually a really good way to visualize the multi-touch / dual-touch nature of the HTC Desire. You can actually see when the two touch points cross axes that there is some hang-up, but as you drag your fingers on, the two locations become uncoupled again.
Is it going to be possible to get the landscape sense on the EVO? Is it even possible since we dont have a keyboard?

Not so sure. The HD Desire has landscape but the EVO has no way to trigger landscape mode. Landscape is triggered on the Shift when the keyboard is slid out. My suggestion before was to create an icon or use the G-Sensor but the code would have to be altered to except this.
I was thinking the same exact thing last night, that I was surprised there had been no ports, considering that the RUU was floating around.
I'm no dev, but in theory it should work better than a Desire Z or HD port, because it would start with a CDMA ROM, and should have WiMax (although I don't know if the same 4G chipset is in both the Evo and the Shift)...
but we better leave it to the experts
I tried looking around but didn't find any answers, I'm wondering is it any way possible to port the keyboard from TrickDroid to XGS Série's?
From what little I know, it would need some parts from sense, aka some files other than just the .apk file? Has anyone ported (or what is called? sorry for poor english...) the sense 4 keyboard to be usable on other ROMs?

Thank you kindly. Getting the keyboard seems to be possible, but a problem still remains that I can't get the correct layout (I live in Finland) for the keyboard. Just gotta wait I suppose, hopefully some day a version with all keys comes up.
