Hi XDA.
I have been looking around the forum, but i can't seem to find anything about rooting the new update 2.73.405.5. It's still firmware version 1.5, but it's build number 2.73.405.5 (scandinavian version).
I'm afraid if i use some of the old guides, ex. this video tutorial: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/ i will mess it up, because it was made for older builds.
Help is much appreciated for a noob like me.
Thanks in advance.

the work has already been done for you.

Hi, I have an Orange HTC Hero straight out of the box which I want to put MoDaCo 3.0 on. I am running through the helpful How-To guide but am stuck at the very beginning. Basically I need to know whether I have to downgrade the Hero so it can be rooted.
Here is what I posted on MoDaCo forums. I am sorry to repeat post but I don't want to break anything LOL
"Hi I just got my Hero out of its box ready to put MoDaCo 3.0 on it following the How-To guide.
The first part of the guide says "If you have Firmware 2.73.x.x. OR HIGHER, you MUST DOWNGRADE FIRST (this typically applies to Orange handsets)
To check your firmware, do the following :
Start Settings
Click About Phone
Check the Kernel Version"
My Kernel Version is apparently 2.6.27-a5504199
My build version is 1.76.61.3 146733 CL#46012 release-keys
Software version is 1.0.0.A6288
Based on this do I need to downgrade in order to root?"
Thanks guys
Hi byakkotai, i did not downgrade my htc hero but able to root/backup/flash crom. i fail to make my goldcard , maybe my sd card cannot make goldcard.
so i juz try rooting & was able to & i go to recovery img & backup my hero & flash modaco crom.
Its the build version you have to look at.
I did do a HTC update to the new build 2.73.xx.x and then I got really stuck, so I think you 1.76 looks good, you can double check if there is any problems around that build, but I don't think so.
If you'r not sure about the build no. Look here @ downgrade guide from theunlockers.com.
If you want a way so simple you can't do wrong follow the one click root guide from theunlockr.com.

Hi there!
I am all new to the android world and a proud owner of a HTC Desire.
I have a branded (vodafone) version with bootloader 0.93.0001, SLCD and android 2.2 with all Updates installed.
I would like to unbrand, root and install the MIUI Rom on my Desire.
I read through guides and stuff and they unsettled me.
There often are hints which say things like: not with new HTC OTA, bootloader xx, SLCD Screen and so on.
So... above I already stated what I would like to do with my Desire.
First of all is it possible? ^^
Seconded, would someone tell me what guides (and pls in what order!!) I have to follow?
I would be very thankful in advance.
Have a nice christmas everyone.

Before rooting, it's a good idea to save the stock ROM you are running right now, so in case of emergency, you can revert to it and send it to the repair service.
From what you say, I assume you are running 2.33.161.2 Vodafone rom, here is the RUU.exe for that version.
You cannot unbrand your phone, but can get rid of the vodafone adware (debrand) by installing a WWE ROM or a MIUI custom rom, as you said you would like.
To install a custom rom you'll have too use unrevoked in order to get root (SU) and a custom recovery, from the latter you can flash custom ROMs.
The most newbie friendly guide in my view is turkey's one.
You must not forget that we, also wish you a Merry Christmass.
Hi again!
Thanks for that Link, it is really helpful.
I have just one Question left:
Won't I need a goldcard?
Because in this guide there is nothing said about a goldcard, but in other tutorials I read that it is needed it to flash, root etc.
So according to the tut you posted above, I guess I dont need a goldcard, right?
regards
You will need a gold card to flash an official WWE ROM, but you do not need a goldcard to flash the RUU I have linked or the MIUI (because it's a custom, not an official rom by a carrier or htc).
Unrevoked doesn't require a goldcard neither.
Thanks again for your help.
I managed to successfully install the gMIUI ROM I found in this Thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885844
But now my light sensor doesn't work! As well as torchlight.
How can I fix this?
+ I think that ROM is really unstable it already rebooted itself 2 times?
Sometimes it just reboots when starting an application?
EDIT: this really sucks. is MIUI really that bad?
Is MIUI in general rather unstable? Or did I do simething wrong/is there a more stable version of it?
(BTW: I choose Pays gMIUI because I wanted to have german language)
regards
Haven't tried Pay's MIUI, but the english version is solid.
You can download it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9932492&postcount=4070
And then download a german language pack from here http://forums.miui-dev.com/showthre...UI-0.12.18-%28N1-Desire%29-Pack-3-verf%FCgbar
Can't tell you info or instructions on that because it's in ... german .
Hello everybody,
While I've got a fair amount of knowledge in iPhone jailbreaking, the Android root tutorials still leave me kind of confused.
This is what I have:
Desire HD T-mobile branded
Android version: 2.3.3
Build number: 2.37.111.6
This is want I want:
Install ROMs from this site, especially the Revolution HD one.
To get this, I assume I have to have ROOT and S-OFF.
It would be great if someone could list me the next steps to take or link me to a tutorial that is perfect to use for me, because there's a ton of them out there and I don't want to mess things up with a new phone
Also,it should be restorable to stock anytime if I have to send it in, so backup instructions would be great, too.
Thanks in advance, zimpl

Thanks, I'll try that
Can someone give me some good links about how to root?
I tried the downgrade tut, 1.72 TO 1.34 but didn't work for me.
Can someone say what is the best to do.
And I did search this first.
If you need more or other information ask.

i had the same problem, solved it a bit complicated:
i first made the official update to gingerbread (from carrier) and then made the downgrade to 1.34...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
for perm root i used the wiki guide
Thank you for the information.
It worked.
First upgrade to 2.3.5 and then use the tut to downgrade to 2.2 build 1.34.
Second used the tutorial to root compleet and putting superuser on mob.
Third i flashed clockmod on the mob.

Hello and welcome to XDA!
First of all, you need to learn how to root your phone. This can be a tricky process, but you will find many helpful people here.
After you do that, you can install different Android versions on your phone, also called ROMs.
The 4.0 version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, is currently in Alpha stage, so you might want to wait a few weeks/months until it gets more stable. Until then, you can try many of the ROMs in the Android Development section.
I'll come back with some links to tutorials
Edit: As promised, here are the two guides which I consider are easy enough for a newbie to consider:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
I would recommend thoroughly reading the guides, making sure you understand *everything* and informing yourself about ADB and rooting first, though. Remember, Google is your friend.
The reason is that if you mistake something, you might end up with a nice HTC-branded paperweight. But follow the steps as written and read beforehand about what you are doing, and you'll be a-OK.
