hi gurus,
i'm a new user in this forum. Many friends, tell me that this is the best forum for mobile device.
I've a HTC desire Z with android version 2.3.3. I would change this version with other version of androi. I read that has been released a 4.0 beta version.
Where i can download this file from this forum? and where i can download 2.3.6 version?
can you help me?
thanks
Best regards
Gianni
Hello and welcome to XDA!
First of all, you need to learn how to root your phone. This can be a tricky process, but you will find many helpful people here.
After you do that, you can install different Android versions on your phone, also called ROMs.
The 4.0 version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, is currently in Alpha stage, so you might want to wait a few weeks/months until it gets more stable. Until then, you can try many of the ROMs in the Android Development section.
I'll come back with some links to tutorials
Edit: As promised, here are the two guides which I consider are easy enough for a newbie to consider:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
I would recommend thoroughly reading the guides, making sure you understand *everything* and informing yourself about ADB and rooting first, though. Remember, Google is your friend.
The reason is that if you mistake something, you might end up with a nice HTC-branded paperweight. But follow the steps as written and read beforehand about what you are doing, and you'll be a-OK.

@Dodolom - welcome
Best place to start reading about the rooting process is in the sticky at the top of this thread. Lots of information by many smart guys, so take your time and read through the lot before doing anything.
Why root? Well by rooting you can install custom ROMs which contain new software or customisations and programs outside of the stuff that HTC chooses to provide in their stock ROMs.
Good luck.
And just a word of advice - have a good read of all the stuff in the forum before asking questions. Will most certainly reduce the risk of you getting flamed
thanks mate.
Also, just run the phone as it is - you may find it does what you want it to do out the box - rooting is only neccessary if something you wish to do isn't available without rooting...

At the moment, I wouldn't say it's very advantageous to root your desire. I rooted my G1 back in the day (only a year or so ago I know ) - but with the Desire, the rooting process still leaves part of the OS locked down, which means you still don't get full control over it.
The only advantage I could see at the moment for rooting the desire would be to get Apps 2 SD. However this is rumoured to be a new feature in Android 2.2 (Froyo) which is due for release within the next month or 2 for Desires. So rather than void your warranty and risk bricking your phone. It might be better to wait for 2.2 and see what you get with that!
i have no idea why everyne doesnt root the desire when they get it... goto modaco.com goto the desire section and follow the r6 riskfree root process and now ou will have a world class phone that you can install app2sd , app2sd+ or app2sd++ nt to mention all the custom roms... good luck
What's the difference between app2sd, app2sd+ and app2sd++ ???

Hi all,
Very new to this forum and android. Last december 2010 I got a new Desire HD which I have started using now lol!!! previous phone was a nokia n96!!
This there a voting list for custom roms for the Desire HD to see which rom's are mostly installed by fellow members.
I have had my phone unlocked by t-mobile, I really want to install a custom rom, currently it has 1.72.
not sure which is the best if any rom to install. I have been looking at Android Revolution HD 6.1.5 which seems good to me.
your help and feedback on this topic would greatly be appreciate.
many thanks
install rom
having your phone unlocked won't allow you to install custom roms, your phone has to be rooted with s-off before you can install roms, there are tutorials in this forum on how to do this and what software you need ie aahk, multitool etc. also search is your friend but do read the tutorials then read them again.
[Poll] which rom do you have
Threads like this only lead to flame wars. A search would have showed you this.
Thread closed
thank you very much for your help
Dear all developers;
1st, I know that xda-developers had everything, but really I become very confused what to use and how.
as ICS and JB ROM incresed, and Desire HD start to become limited resourced for these ROMs, and alot of leader developers start to switch to newer models, I start to feel that this forum become so confused.
1st request, plz, Can any interested developer build an updated comprehensive threat for kernels not like this threat because I spend 3 days of searching the whole net for list of compatible kernels for desire HD and its ROMs.
2nd request, plz, As I mentioned above, regarding limited resourced of DHD. Can any interested developer build and update comprehensive threat for app2sd, link2sd,.... that compatible with Desire HD.
3rd request, how to add international keyboard for stock IME, I read every where and can't find my request.
Finally, sorry to open new threat here but really I'm so confused.

1. That index thread is actually pretty updated; it's missing a couple of the newest JB ones and a couple ICS ones, but the maintainer is currently busy with school in real life and will get to it when he can. In the meantime, the currently active ROMs generally crowd around the top of the dev forum, since people comment on those threads the most. Are you looking for kernels in specific, or ROMs? If you are looking for kernels, is there a reason you don't like the kernels that come with the respective ROMs? Those usually work the best.
2. There are many apps in the Play Store that allow you to move apps to the sdcard (Titanium Backup, Rom Toolbox/App Manager, Apps2SD, etc.). Is that what you are asking for?
3. Can't answer that, no idea.
and 4. This is the development forum, for posting ROMs and other contributions. Please put things like this in Q&A in the future.
The questions and answers section exists for a reason...
I spent all last 2 months searching for a soulutions, I tried dta2sd, datalink, EXT4++, native ROM edit for sd-ext but nothing work, some advices was to change kernel, but till now nothing works, if scripts can create sd-ext folder & move all data folder into, the phone stuck in reboot loop.
Advice plz

HI all, this is a very noob question.
I have tried searching the forum but either I am confused by the mixed answers or perhaps I am really really lost.
My android version is 2.3.5 (the latest official firmware for HTC desire Hd), have been trying to find a tutorial guide to root my phone so that I can use custom rom.
In the midst of my search, I read that advanced hack kit can do the job but you will need a windows-based platform?
Even so, I am seeing some conflicted comments and hence am not sure which should I take. Could someone points it out to me?
Then, unfortunately I am have mac os platform that is available to me and hence are there any guides for mac users?
Many thanks in advance!

Hello guys, im newbie in roms and all the phones stuff so please dont criticise I have a HTC Desire Z with Android 2.2. My question here is how to update it to newer? 4.4.4 would be awesome, i want newest i can. I found some posts on couple of forums about this but every was like "format, flash, update, boooom done". Can anyone tell me how to do it from begining? I mean how to format it the way it should be, how to flash, what do i need etc.
Also i found this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374927
Is it good? I know i shouldnt ask what rom should i pick, im just asking is it good to use on this phone.
Thanks in advance
Hi,
The second post in this thread will help you understand the initial process
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348266
You need to use gfree to exploit and root if you want radio s-off which is the only way you should root this phone. And be sure to read through all those links to understand fully first, I know it may be overwhelming but it is important.
As for best ROM, we don't make suggestions in xda but the third and forth post will link you to every to available. Gingerbread runs the best overall but there are many ICS and jb ROMs that work almost as well (some will say better) and KitKat has come a long way where many will find that it suffice for daily use.
You'll have to try a few, make backups, try a few more to see what works best for you
If you get stuck somewhere just ask in that thread and many are there to jump in and help
Best of luck!
