I'm considering getting a TP2 to use as an internet phone, would it be good for me?
I plan to use it for (in this order):
1. SIP/VoIP calling over wifi (how convenient is this?)
2. Email (multiple email account support, filters for organization, etc)
3. Media (videos/mp3s/pandora/youtube)
edit: 4. Web browsing and e-book reading
This is a big purchase for me and I don't want to receive the phone and find out that the SIPconfig/AudioRoute doesn't work well enough to use as a primary phone.
It's between the TP2 and an Android device (they seem to work well as internet phones and have capacitive screens, but no WVGA).
Please help me make this decision. I need advice from experienced users.
If you dont need qwert key board, i would say HTC Touch HD is much better choice. It have almost same hardware as Pro 2, but it uses 3.8 screen instead 3.6 for pro2.
And it is cheaper than Pro2
My experience.. very good handling.. especially with Opera.. Speed is f*cked up but that's not the phone, cause my htc tp2 beats my friends n97 and another friends samsung omnia pro..it's the ****ty coverage in my pesantville over here..
no flash in opera though, bit of a setback considering my age of eighteen years old
If you don't need qwerty i'd suggest you wait for HTC Leo

TP2 works great with skype, good audio.
Works fine

I use it with Skype for WM and it works great... clear sound from between US and UK, and even works fine in video conference mode on WiFi... and that's even on the $hitty broadband speeds we get here in Grand Cayman.
thanks guys, but does anyone have experience with using the built-in SIP/VoiP features in windows mobile? i.e., call someone normally from contacts and it goes through SIP?

I think i'm interested in this O2 XDA IIs PDA phone and will buy it soon. as i'm too new to this PDA and GPRS thing, i hope you guys can help me out. thanks!
What i want to know are:
1. is this phone good? any problems?
2. is that right that i will need to pay both, monthly cellphone service plan and data service plan, in order to keep internet access on 24/7?
3. is the internet access on whenever the phone is on or i have to turn it on when i need it and turn it off when i don't.?
Hi Martin5kh,
1. is this phone good? any problems
Yes, and yes. Whether it's any good for you entirely depends on your requirements, as does whether you'll have any problems. Probably the most consistent complaint is the poor Bluetooth implementation (in regard to different profiles).
2. is that right that i will need to pay both, monthly cellphone service plan and data service plan, in order to keep internet access on 24/7?
Most probably, however this depends on your provider. For instance, I use Vodafone in Australia and I'm on a 'capped' plan which includes $500-worth of services, for $79-per-month. This includes calls, sms, mms, and gprs internet. I suggest you check out your country's providers' websites for available plans.
3. is the internet access on whenever the phone is on or i have to turn it on when i need it and turn it off when i don't.?
Your device will connect to the internet whenever an application needs to. Generally this only occurs when you want it to (such as if you hit the send/receive email button in Pocket Outlook), however you can certainly leave it connected all day (as long as you're within your network coverage area). If you do, you can set Outlook to check email on a schedule.
Codenix.
Thanks for your reply.
Now i'm kind of thinking of Xda II Mini and Xphone IIm as well. Because i somehow found Xda IIs a bit too big! But too bad Mini has no built-in keyboard and i have heard Mini has many little problems. Xphone IIm looks good but typing would be slow due to the natural of no touch screen.
What do you think? i guess my main purpose with the phone is to allow me to go on msn and read news.

By the way, are any of these phones upgradable to windows mobile 5 later?
Anyone notice the massive difference in response time over HSDPA when compared to WiFi.
HSDPA is fast enough but the latency is terrible and this has a knock on effect for RDP connections from the Device.
It litterally takes roughly 2 seconds for an action to register i.e. clicking on something over a HSDPA/UMTS 3G link whereas wifi is pretty instantainous (if that's a word LOL)
Admittedly this applies to all HSDPA equiped WM devices.
Has anyone got any suggestions for speeding it up?
Am aware of logmein (free) - used to use it years ago with my blueangel and am also aware of GotoMYPC which I will never use because you have to pay for it.
Am really looking to findout away to improve the default RDP.
Also I have read Menneysis' thorough rundown on available Remote desktop clients for WM - anyone know of any new developments in this field?
Hi, all I can say is that I just tested RealVNC(encrypted) over HSDPA to one of my servers to determine the delay you were talking about - since I did not notice it, and I use VNC pretty much.
The delay, measured from pressing enter on "calc" in "run" window, will the calc shows up is less than a half second, surprisingly fast, the buttons on the calculator are very responsive as well. - same goes for menus.
I did NOT see any action that is instant on the console, taking as much as 1 second.
M$ RDP is bloated and a hogs bandwidth, but I cannot imagine that should be the reason - I would suspect your operator's network - maybe they send data first to CIA, then KGB, then EU , for logging & censorship ?
You should try a traceroute or pathping.

Can you check your connection speeds? it works OK for me (vodafone, city city centre)
Hi Alcapone,
I downloaded the RealVNC and can confirm that it appears to be a little more responsive than RDP. But I found I didn't really like the VNC interface - however it's likely that I will be using it again to manage one of my clients servers that has RDP deliberately disabled. Regarding your other comments - I wonder about that sometimes too... I will find those cabs and run some tests.
@Devis hmmm - LOL - You never know!
Hi Tomo - I am also on vodafone and deliberately chose them based on HSDPA connection reliability in the City (london)
What strikes me as odd is the fact that when I tether the phone to my laptop and VPN into the networks I manage over HSDPA everything flies - as in I don't experience this issue... only happens when using the WM RDP client

I live in Norway, our weak, pathetic politicians kiss EU's a*s, so we may be heading towards some privacy/free speech killing rules as the rest of Europe.
In the mean time, latest news is that the RIAA, MPAA, IFPI in other words the "extortion & threat business" did get denied from monitoring/tracking Norwegian torrent IP's - and ask for the name of the people behind. - So with this stop to a private police-wannabees, we may still believe in privacy & freedom.
Hi guys,
I'am going to buy HTC Touch Pro 2 for daily use as IM messenger widget, so I all time need to be online with this gadget - and the main qustion is, if battery will last long for ALL DAY with 3G enabled mode?
P.S.: also how good is this model for IM messaging? is it the BEST what i can buy? I thought about nokia, because I can write GUI software with ease useing python - but nokia don't have good RDC and openvpn - what I really need in. it also lack of freeofte e.t.c. but anyway maybe there are better model on the market for this activity?
P.S.S.: the previous my choose was asus 901 netbook but it lack of mobility I need for daily usage, even on the rest, so I hope that TP2 is right compromisse for me - tell plz if it's not
you don't need 3G for messaging, 2G (Edge) works 100% fine.
agree, for IM, just use EDGE and you can have the whole day, assuming push mail is off
if u intend to use 3G, u will prolly get around 8-10 hours of active IM
- double post -
thank you, then once more question - is it possible to easy switch from EDGE to 3G on the fly without breaking the connection? I mean that if I got some message on IM I need to go to the web and make there some activity on the websites, so in this way 3G is more prefered
The reason for this thread is to help people get Skype working to its fullest extent and resolve some of the issues. The ultimate objective is to allow those with Skype subscriptions to get unlimited anytime calling across North America if they pay the $2.95 / month for the Skype plan and have unlimited data...
Download Skype 3.0 for Windows Phones here:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/windowsmobile/
It installs fine and theoretically works great, however, there are a number of issues:
1. Skype automatically routes all audio to the speakerphone.
To route the audio to the earpieces, install audioRoute from Teksoft:
http://teksoftco.com/storage/download.php?product=audioroute_ppc
This product is discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=495166
It essentially installs an icon in your taskbar that loads when the phone starts up. Once you open Skype, you click the icon, select the first icon, which is the earpiece, and then all audio will get routed to the earpiece when using Skype.
To route the audio to a Bluetooth headset, then install A2DP toggle from Teksoft:
http://teksoftco.com/storage/download.php?product=a2dptoggle
This program should theoretically allow you to select the Bluetooth headset when Skype is loaded. It should theoretically be able to be loaded concurrently with audioRoute. I have not tested it fully.
2. Skype will not work unless connected to a wifi connection
I had tested Skype and thought it worked flawlessly until someone with an iPhone mentioned that he had to install some sort of program to "trick" Skype into thinking it was connected to a Wifi. I believe that this is an issue with the way Microsoft has designed Windows Mobile, but is probably intential to prevent competition for telecommunication company voice packages. This issue supposedly does not exist with Windows Mobile clients.
Just ensure that ActivSync/Wifi/Mobile is enabled under the Connection settings.
3. Skype Mobile does not support video calling
I'm not sure if this is a software issue or just something that can be hacked. I see no reason why this functionality would be disabled in the Mobile version of Skype... any insight would be appreciated.
Would love it if anyone else is experiencing problem 2 as well... I want to find out if it's isolated to my handset... or even to just my carrier.

No problem here on a Vodafone TP2. Skype uses the 3G connection fine.
You know that htere's a setting that tells Skype what connection(s) to use? It defaults to "Use ActiveSync/Wifi" but can be changed to "Use ActiveSync/Wifi/Mobile"
It was working for me I think
see the message below

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but I have made calls through Skype on my TyTN II using the Australian Three 3G network. Called my wife on her mobile in Shanghai with no problems. Well, the connection was pretty horrible (I think it's a bit hard work for both the phone and the network) but it connected fine for as long as I wanted.
As tjobbins said, in the Connection Method settings, I can "Use ActiveSync/WiFi" or "Use ActiveSync/WiFi/Mobile"... so if I'm overseas, I leave it on the first one; in Australia on the second one.

Interesting... I think my settings might have changed because I tested it again just now and it worked!
Thanks all!
I'm interested in how this works. I own the Titan at the moment and Skype only works over Wifi. Do you know if Skype plans on fixing the problem with calls only being heard from speaker phone? Any update on video calling?
off-topic question here, does anyone know if the titan operates on 3G? (i have sprint)

We can only hope. Skype have their forums and I saw a number of posts complaining about those missing features. I guess we should add our voices, though I would expect it will take a while for it to be fixed; the current version for Windows Mobile, Skype 3, was released fairly recently.
One alternative to look at is Fring. It supports better audio routing, i.e. calls are not only on speakerphone - they can come through the normal phone earpiece, or a bluetooth headset. Don't think it does video. As well as Skype, it also supports MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, AIM and others, so it's a good all-in-one client.
However on the TP2 Fring does currently have one quite annoying issue - it doesn't seem to work on Wifi. It's fine on mobile/3G connections, but on Wifi it won't list access points or connect. This is reported on their forums but no sign of a fix yet. Actually I did once get it connect to WiFi, but I don't really know how and haven't been able to repeat it.
Oh I just remembered the other huge problem with Skype for Windows Mobile - it doesn't list your phone contacts!
Bloody useless when you want to make a Skype Out call, and you end up having to go into the contact record, copy their number, and then paste it into Skype. Really daft.
Fring does list your contacts, and you can use it for Skype Out as well as Fring's own paid-for outbound dialling system.
I have another problem: NO notifications! So i don't know if someone chats or phone me! It's useless in that way!

Thanks for the suggestion. I want to make sure that I'm using only data-only when making calls, since I have unlimited data... and limited daytime voice minutes.
I installed fring, and it doesn't show the TP2 as a supported device. When I launched it, it kept asking me to find a WLAN... except nothing shows up on the list! Wifi is enabled AND data is enabled, and it keeps showing Not Available...
Has it worked on your TP2?

Nope. See my post before the one you quoted! It doesn't work on WiFi on the TP2 at the moment - and also on some other WM devices I think.
Works great on 3G and ActiveSync, just doesn't work on WiFi.
Except.. once for me it did. It suddenly connected and I don't know how or why. Haven't managed to repeat it yet though. But maybe there's a workaround lying in there waiting to be (re) discovered

No no - I had wifi disabled and just tried to use regular data connection... but it couldn't find the connection for some reason.
Hate to bump an old thread... but I finally got Fring working on my TP2 (latest version), but SkypeOut calls don't actually direct to the Earpiece... I don't hear anything. Loudspeaker works fine.
So, I'm looking for an app that allows me to send and recieve SMS through my PC, with my Dash connected via activesync.
Many people recommend Jeyo, but I want to try another one. Any suggestions?

Well, if you live in a dead zone, then you have a slightly larger problem. Just because you can connect to your computer doesn't mean you can do whatever you want.
For instance, I use(d) mDesktop ... awesome app, but what it does is use the PHONE as a "Network Router" (That is my term, basically it will act as a connection to the network) ... so no signal = no signal. The computer will not compensate. If you live in a deadzone, complain to your company and toss around a couple "You know [ANOTHER COMPANY] has great service here and a great price too" if you need to, and maybe the company will get some action done (then again, that isn't all too likely since towers tend to be shared for multiple purposes).
If you live in a dead zone, either complain, or try to find some sort of Online SMS service, because I am positive they exist, or build some sort of amplifier for cell signal (i would check instructables.com).

I've tested it. There's a small issue. It allows keyboard input from the pc but some letters don't work. here's an explanation from one of SOTI's support team:
"we have tested Pocket Controller-Pro with Dash-equivalent devices (HTC-S620 / Excalibur) and it works without any problems.
The problem is observed on devices that are running the T-Mobile branded firmware, which is customized for T-Mobile and responds differently to input compared to devices running a standard firmware (with a standard keyboard input driver). "
I'm curently running 3VO's ROM.. any ideas?
UPDATE: same happens with "MyMobiler"
