So, is aGPS pretty much impossible at this point? Should I just worry about using regular GPS?
I am going to flash to a custom ROM, but don't want to spend the time trying the aGPS hack if it isn't going to work.
TIA
Hopefully you haven't run customizations on the default ROM yet, or you'll have a bit of a headache getting standalone GPS to work. Even when it works, it takes a few minutes to actually get a lock. Sigh.
Your aGPS options are to do the hack (make sure you have XP 32 bit, the QPST software doesn't seem to work on Vista/7 x64) or you can just pay for aGPS service from Verizon (I think).
Honestly I wouldn't worry about aGPS because most people probably have a dedicated GPS anyway. It's worth unlocking standalone GPS though, in case you're lost without anything but your phone. It saved my ass on a camping trip recently.
So sorry for sounding ignorant, but last time I did a hard reset, best I recall the phone did customization without asking me? How do you stop it from running customizations?
Thanks!
To stop customizations from running soft reset the phone as soon as as the customization countdown begins.
I let the customizations run on the MR1 update and followed the directions here http://wiki.ppchaven.com/index.php?title=Pocket_PC_WIki:FIX_VERIZON_GPS (i skipped step 6 since I'm using a custom rom) and have no issues with standalone gps I have a data block and use TomTom 7 using NFSFANs 6.5 Roms.

Ah! Thanks! I went to the link you gave to the wiki above. I'm puzzled as to why they have you flash with a Sprint ROM first and then a Verizon ROM???

Upgrade first then activate, that way you avoid having to deal with calling for a new A-key.

If you bought your phone through Verizon it comes with the GPS locked. Flashing to sprint unlocks the GPS. Then you have to flash back the verizon Rom to use their service, but you have to prevent verizon customizations otherwise the GPS will be locked again.
Out of the box, sprint did not lock out standalone GPS. Verizon locked it out so that account holders would have to pay to use the VZ navigator service.

Hi all after testing for about a day i have found a way to get rogers name display to work on the tilt 2. Just had done a lot a searching and combined 2 cabs to get this working.
I have tested this only on the Energy rom and nothing else.
1st you need to install: rilphone for rogers CNAP.cab
then soft reset
2nd you need to install: NRGZ28 Tachi Dialer Disabler.cab
Yes i know you are all saying disabler for tachi but so far this is the only way it will work until someone can implement the settings for stock wm dialer to tachi.
Please Stick this
I tried it on my tilt2 with the cell pro rom it is making my phone run hot and draining the battery fast 10% in about 10 minutes. But it is also making my phone run alot smoother. Uninstalled with no luck still running hot and draining the battery fast. also "attention required" message flashes when I reboot. Time for a hard reset.

yes i agree i dont think that would be a problem with the rilphone.dll sounds like the phone is using either the data or phone itself all the time i would say try a hard reset and try this again. if it does the same thing again try a different rom. Im using energy rom i have always had good luck with his roms.
Thank you for those great cabs. Will be going back to canada in 2 weeks and will give it a try and report back.
I am using Mighty Mike's rom, do you think it will work?
regular phones with rogers/Fido don't need data. Using this cab, will I have to use data?

pretty sure it will work with any rom just try the rilphone.dll first and if it still don't work then install tachi dis-abler and should work. This will only work on GSM models not cdma/gsm so make sure yours is just gsm. And as for data the answer is no it doesn't use any data at all just like a regular rogers/Fido phone.
Thanks Hiwired.
Is there a way to make it work on CDMA
I linked this thread on ppcgeeks, maybe someone could collaborate with your work to see if they can make it work for us WCDMA users. I hope you don't mind.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1851465#post1851465
nope i dont mind at all. and as it sits so far right now it will only work on gsm rogers. if you are looking for cdma then right now might look at program called truecallerid but you have to have 3g on in order for you to see it when the call comes in. it does use data as well to. im switchin carriers this week goin to bell so im going to try to mess with this on thier cdma/gsm 3g network

I wish there's a work around for CDMA because I am using it on FIDO
ya as it sits right now bell only has caller number display BUT since they went with the 3g gsm network we might see something come out soon for it they have the proper network now just need the coding
A little off topic hiwiredjuice , but what radio are you using with this fix and the energy rom? I'm on the rogers network and I want to find an optimal radio to use. I am using Energy Rom, and i plan on using this fix aswell.
Hello- I've been reading around this site and I am not sure if what I've found is accurate, I could use the help of those that are informed.
I'm new to Android having only gotten my first incredible yesterday. I tried using unrevoked (v. 3.21 to the best of my knowledge) on windows after installing the appropriate drivers and was unsuccessful two or three times. It would hang at waiting for root or 'we can't get root,' were the two messages I'd receive.
I reset to factory from the bootloader and tried this again on my Mac machine- this was different but still unsuccessful. It would still say 'waiting for root,' however the phone itself was stuck powered on with nothing on the screen. It took me unplugging the mini USB and removing the battery to finally get it to power back on and show something on the screen.
With that said, is there an update from Verizon that causes unrevoked to no longer work? I read that somewhere but am unsure how recent the information is.
Secondly- what I really want to do is enable the Wifi Hotspot feature without having to fork MORE money over to Verizon- am I going down the right path to enable this?
Lastly- can someone please provide a good thread I can read up on regarding handling future updates for Android OS- I assume OTA updates are disabled once rooted, how do I continue to make sure my OS is up to date when this is disabled?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You most likely have the latest OTA update, which patches the exploit that UnrEVOked 3.21 used to get root. They are currently working on a new exploit for the recent OTA update now.
If you want free wifi tethering, you don't exactly need to root. This'll do the trick: http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/showthread.php?54386-Android-OS-htc-incredible-free-wifi-tethering
Usually the OTA's get incorporated into later ROM releases, so all you'll have to do is download and install the new release for your custom ROM.
If you prefer to have a stock, but rooted ROM, you can download the rooted stock ROMs that usually come out after OTA updates.
Or, usually, there are leaked updates released before the official update comes out. Those are also rooted and usually posted here as well, if you want early release things.
I hope I helped you out, need anything else cleared up?

Woah. I've been searching these forums for two weeks looking for this, and thought that my only choice is to root the dang phone. Does this not alert VZW about the usage, or can they only tell how much data is being used?
I just tested this with the "wifi hotspot" app that's on the (unrooted) Incredible, and holy crap it worked! If this works out then I've just solved my only major gripe with having the Incredible on Verizon!

By changing the dun nai, its supposed to disable the "tell VZW I'm using this app" thing. I'm not sure about this one, but I think they can still see you're using data, just not that its from the hotspot app. Just know, if they can somehow track/tell you're using it and you get caught, I'm not to be held liable lol. Blame the guy who made the post I showed you lol. Just a little disclaimer, just in case.

Sure. What I mean is- I originally wanted to root it only to enable the functionality of the Wifi Hotspot. What functionality can I add by rooting my phone in addition to this?
I don't really see the advantage of having to update my ROM manually any time there is an Android OS update- what's the value?

SetCPU was a big selling point in my eyes back when I first rooted. You can underclock the processor while the screen is off to help save battery. But, that kind of stuff is built into some kernels now (Kings BFS6, for example). But, if you want your phone to run a bit faster and smoother, you can overclock. I also like running different ROMs with themes and stuff. The customization is pretty neat imo. Like on this ROM: I have a few (6) quick settings I can change in the notifications bar. Just little conveniences like that win me over lol. And, there are leaked versions of official releases incorporated in to ROMs earlier than they're rolled out. I was running Froyo back in late July lol. Applying different ROMs/updates to the ROMs isn't hard or inconvenient at all... Only when your battery is low does it suck lol. If you wanna remove bloatware, no problem. And, if you ever mess up somewhere, you can usually apply a Nandroid backup you previously made and be good to go.

Did you confirm working AT&T Sim while in stock rom, after it was unlocked? Once unlocked for GSM, it's good for life, there's no need to re-enter the 8 digits code again when you flash or change to a different/custom ROM.
If you use (and, I personally used them both & highly recommended it) either Skyraider's Zeus v1.3 or Nit's Stock Sense 2.1/3.0 v5 rom (see my signature below) - both of them support GSM, and you will have working voice & SMS coverage, to use mobile/broadband data on GSM - you need a data plan/package/bundle from the provider - plus it needs to be provisioned & activated on the account/mobile # - and the proper APN settings (if not preloaded or auto-updated OTA)
To use AT&T sim on Aero's unofficial CM9 rom, you need to confirm/change/setup APN settings for AT&T and save it, power off the device & reboot - (it might disppeared but it should be loading/working) - then you will gain data functionality, along with voice & data. Speed will be Edge only at 2/2.5G and not 3G, AFAIW (ditto, same or similar for T-Mobile sim)

when you input the code while on stock did you get a confirmation that the phone was actually unlocked? when you lose signal completely do you have the back cover on? does the phone say there is no SIM detected? flashing different ROMs shouldn't affect your unlock status. i'm running AOKP on GSM with no problems...

Pandora shouldn't have any problems with Edge/2G speed on DI2, I use Tunein Radio just fine with Edge/GPRS when I last travel - it's backward compatible to Android 1.x when bandwidth was rather limited and slow then.
It always help to close and/or not run widgets in the background so that apps in the foreground can gain as much bandwidth as possible - turn off those news/weather, FB, Twitter and Live wallpaper, etc. - and you should be good.
If you will be using DI2 mostly in GSM mode with a Sim card, whether it's mostly over WiFi or not - Skyraider's Zeus v1.3 (GB rom with Sense 2.1/3.0 tweaks) would be my rom of choice - updated with .312 radio & #79 kernel, allowing for overclocking if desired (I leave mine stock, but done it at 1.2 Ghz) for unbelievable battery life on standby mode. Enjoy & have fun!

This has been discussed many times... I do appreciate the fact that you found a similar thread rather than just starting a new one. However, in the future, please search before posting.
To answer your question, no (that is, unless you feel confident that you can guess the code in no more than 3 tries...) You can get them pretty cheap online. Just do some searching around and make sure that the place you are buying from has good feedback before giving them your payment info.

Thanks for the reply. I actually did a search and found that info. I just wanted to make sure that I hadn't missed some info on a way to fully unlock without having to purchase the code by rooting.
Btw, I've read that an unlock code from VZW will allow international SIM cards only. What about a purchased unlock code from htcimeiunlock or a similar site? Will it allow T-Mobile or ATT SIMs?
Yep if you buy one from there you should be all set. From what I hear they are a good site to get one from too.

I was flashing between CyanogenMod 10 nightlies and DrewGaren's Jelly Bean roms, wiping data every single time and always doing a clean flash when I noticed on CyanogenMod 10/05 nightly that the GPS wasn't catching any satellites at all. It doesn't seem like it's even trying because the GPS dot doesn't even come up in the notification bar. I tried using GPS Test and it just says 0. Same thing with any other GPS application.
I tried flashing to other roms to see if it changed anything and still no luck. Finally, I flashed all the way back to AT&T stock in ODIN and still no luck!! I'm thinking of just taking it to the AT&T store and see if they can do anything about it, I don't know the warranty situation since I bought it off of Craigslist. Anybody have any ideas?
Please don't go to ATT. We can't really help you since you bought it from a. craigslist and b. all we could do is get you to call warranty department in which case they may charge you since it was not purchased at the att store.
Do you know if the GPS ever worked??
Please go to dialer and type *#0*#. In that menu go to sensor test and make sure everything is working properly.

Got it working
Hey, thanks for the help guys. I actually got it working. Flashed stock rom with ODIN and did a factory reset and it just started working out of no where. This was after 0 GPS signal on many different roms for over 24 hours.
No idea what caused it to stop working in the first place maybe some kind of conflict with the Drew Garen Sprint based Jelly Bean rom or maybe something in Cyanogen Mod 10/05 nightly. Perhaps the phone got tired of me flashing so many roms and just needed to rest overnight lol.
If anybody else has an issue with their GPS not catching signal at all flash all the way back to stock and factory reset and hopefully it'll sort the issue out.
Wow, everything you described in your OP is happening to me. I believe this happened to me after flashing DrewGaren's ROM too (4 point something). I tried it out then went back to Wanamlite, my DD, and experienced all that you said. After Wanam I flashed 2 or 3 other ROMs and got the same response... no GPS.
Just in the process of Odin flashing a stock image to see what happens.
Edit: Back to stock, then factory reset. Tried accessing the GPS service menu but that didn't work. Final result is that GPS is not working at all and here is no indication in the status bar. Looks like I'll be off to the Samsung store for service...
I think the Drew Garen Milestone 4.5 has something to do with this. It's based on the Sprint leak and maybe that made our GPS wonky.
Just to let you know, the stock firmware I used was this one.
http://samsung-updates.com/get/648/Samsung_Firmware_SGH-I747_ATT_I747UCALG1_Android_4_0_4.html
Hopefully you can get it sorted out. Just wondering, how do you access the GPS service menu? Cause the code I know doesn't work on AT&T Galaxy S 3 at all so I want to see if the code you tried works on mine. Good luck getting your phone working.
Another reason why you shouldn't use DG roms? Lol
I'm running insomnia leaks with no gps issues. Glad to see the OP got his working again.

I did the same here is the fix.
Odin rooted stock ROM
Boot up as normal
Then do a factory wipe under settings.

Thanks for the firmware link but I am in Canada with Telus.
As for the GPS Service Menu, I saw some dialer codes for accessing it but they don't seem to work for our model.
It's weird how GPS doesn't show up anywhere on the phone now. Not the status bar or in battery usage stats. I am beginning to wonder if this is a hardware issue more than anything.
I know, it's like the GPS totally disappears from the phone, I thought it has a hardware issue too! I was actually on the phone with Samsung customer support and ended up fixing it while I was on hold.
On my first try I got no results too but when I downloaded the one from samsung-updates, flash via ODIN, and then factory reset the phone from settings that's when I finally got my GPS to work. They have the Telus software up there too if you want to give it a whirl. http://samsung-updates.com/get/2566/Samsung_Firmware_SGH-I747M_TLS_I747MVLALH1_Android_4_0_4.html
But at this point your only recourse might be to get done through Samsung customer support. Let us know what happens.

Thanks, that is the exact firmware I flashed. Just in the process of downloading the I747MVLALE8 version. I know it's older but worth a shot.
I'll update the thread as I go along but am most likely going to the Samsung store in a week or two so there will be a delay in my response.
The disappearing gpshappened to me also. I flashed dg's m 4.5 and thats when I lost gps completely. I did all of the above mentioned in other threads and couldn't get it too come back. At&t replaced it for me. I would advise staying away from sprint leaks I guess.

Update:
Got in touch with Samsung. They forwarded me to the warranty repair company located in my neck of the woods (Vancouver, BC).
Company is called Service Absolut, located in Richmond around Westminster Hwy and No. 6 Road. There is another in Montreal for easterners.
Regular warranty service is 3 business days for $0 OR 3 hour express service for $30. This place isn't too far from my office so maybe I'll give the 3-day service a try..... on second thought I think the $30 might be worth it for same day service. :cyclops:
I ran into the same or similar loss of GPS on DG Milestone 4.5 and 5. I was able to regain GPS on a CWM restore back to Milestone 4.
Really think this is a ROM bug that can be fixed in SW. I'm surprised to hear that some have had much tougher luck than I have.
Anybody heard anything from Drew Garen? (I don't have enough posts to comment in the main thread, or I'd be there)

Yep, this is exactly what happened to me.
I flashed DG's M4.5 and my GPS quit working. Very weird.
I tried 3 other ROMS and no luck. I ended up returning the phone.
Now I really want to flash DG's new ROM but it scares me...ha
Final update:
Took the phone to the service center. Tech looked at the phone and tested but couldn't find anything wrong. He replaced the mainboard and all is now fine. GPS is working well.
Next thing is to check out my new CPU now... I hope it doesn't suck.
Did you factory reset on a stock rom like everyone suggested? I was reading your posts and I didnt see that you did it. Could have saved you $.
That issue used to happen to me all the time in the Infuse 4g.

Thanks for the tip but I factory resetted the sh*t out of my phone, lol. Our phone (Canadian version) only has 2 official firmware releases for it and I Odin'd them both and performed factory reset on both, multiple times. Guess I missed that little tidbit earlier
I really hope this was just a one time occurrence.
So I ran into this same issue, although it was from flashing Smartguy's ROM and then going back to CM10. It does seem to be caused by using the Sprint leak. I was unable to recover my GPS with the above method of flashing to stock via Odin and doing the factory reset.
I decided to try going back to my Sprint leak via a Nandroid, this brought my GPS back. I then used my CM10 Nandroid again GPS was working perfectly, although I needed to use GPS test to get it working on CM10. Hope this helps others with this issue.

Can't believe you had to go through all of that but glad you got it sorted. The price we pay for tinkering with our phones so much.

I've recently switched from Sprint to AT&T due to extremely poor cell / data coverage at my home. Now I would like to use my HTC Evo 4G for app development and for offline GPS navigation (it has much better GPS reception than my new Samsung Galaxy S III). I've searched this forum, and the other forums as well, using these search terms:
flash rom update without mobile data usageflash rom without mobile carrier planflash rom without mobile data connectionuse phone as tablet without mobile databut have not found any relevant posts for my questions. I've also reviewed several of the guides regarding rooting and flashing new ROMs on the EVO 4G, but they all seem to assume that you have a service plan and want a data connection to the mobile carrier. I understand that is a normal thing and that my scenario is the exception, so that's probably why my searches have come up empty. I'm simply wondering:
1) Can I root and/or flash a new ROM onto my Sprint EVO 4G now that I no longer have a service contract with Sprint?I don't want the phone to connect to the cell tower for phone or data service, which I assume would incur charges, during or after the procedure.2) Is it feasible to do ROM modifications or Android application development on a device for which I do not have a service contract?Of course I understand that features involving the mobile carrier would be off limits.
All of this can be done without service. It just requires you know what you are doing. Its simple enough to root, you need to know what hboot version you have so you can follow the according procedure.

Its like this, on your laptop you can make yourself an Admin without having Wifi
Same with rooting and your phone
Thanks. I guess I was just being a bit paranoid that I'd get some fat charge from Sprint for the phone connecting to the cell towers during some of the reflash and boot processes before I could turn off the cellular radio (airplane mode). Not sure why I was worried, considering that the poor service at my home is the reason I switched carriers anyway.
I now have an unlocked and rooted EVO 4G. Next step is to try out a JB ROM ...
Hi.An absolute noob to Evo rooting but not to rooting itself. I got a Evo 4g that I just want to use as an ultimate MP4 player for my kid. It's Baseband is 2.15.00.12.19 and is running 2.3.5. What root method works and has files that can be downloaded because I've looked at a bunch that seem obsolete now. Thanks
It's not the baseband version that matters when you're trying to figure out which method to use for rooting. It's the HBOOT version you need to check. The first step is to unlock the bootloader. If you have HBOOT 2.18.0001 like I had, you first need to got to HTCDev.com, create an account, and use the unlock utility on that site. Just follow the directions there. You'll need to enter a number located on the back of your phone underneath the battery, then they'll send a unique binary to the email address you used while registering, which you can then use to unlock your bootloader.
If you have an earlier version of HBOOT, there are other methods to unlock the bootloader. A little more searching in the EVO 4G forums on this site will get you better instructions than I can give.
Anyway, there are several more steps to do after your bootloader is unlocked before the phone is actually rooted. Since you've done this before, you're probably familiar with the rest of the procedure.
Hope that gets you started in the right direction.
Now running a Team D.I.R.T. Jelly Bean ROM from Mazda
By the way, I took the plunge and am now running a Jelly Bean 4.1.2 ROM called Dirty Unicorns V1.0 from Mazda, part of Team D.I.R.T.
Working fine so far, but I'm not utilizing the cellular radio at all, just WiFi and GPS at this point.

I hear that has been an issue for some people. Read over the thread for a fix.

Oh, thanks. But I didn't mean to imply that the cellular radio was an issue. I'm not using it because I don't want to - I no longer have a service plan with Sprint - so I intentionally have the cellular radio disabled.
