Screen quality of Rhodium relative to Kaiser. - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I am a Kaiser user thinking of upgrading to the Rhodium, but one of my critical upgrade requirements is to have a better screen than the one that came with the Kaiser. I am NOT talking about screen resolution (I already know that the Rhodium has higher resolution). I am talking about the light reflection properties.
The screen that comes with the Kaiser can be seen clearly when indoors, but it is impossible to see when you are outside. It reflects too much light. Other phones (for example on some of the latest Blackberries) have screens that can be seen PERFECTLY both indoors and outdoors.
Can somebody please tell me whether the outdoor reflection problems with the Kaiser are solved on the Rhodium?

I have a kaiser as well and tp2 is far better outdoor. The ambient light sensor and auto backlight adjustements really help...

I was going to ask the same question, so im just as interested in peoples response to this. thanks

I noticed you are from the UK. Have you tested it on a really sunny day? Because I am pretty sure that the results will be different on dark rainy day (like you have in London regularly...I am from the Netherlands, so its not much different) than on a sunny bright day.

Much better indeed

I'm from Israel, and upgraded my Kaiser for a TP2 a few weeks ago. Indeed the screen is much better, even outdoors on sunny summer days (LOTS of sun here. ).
It's still not perfect (what can ever be?), but the light sensor does help and if you choose your backgrounds well, it's great. I can use the phone without having to guess where things are (as I had to do with the Kaiser) and on the black on white background screens (emails, text, ...) it's even better.
I use it for turn-by-turn navigation on the car and it's good too, although the silver frame sometimes reflects the sun and it's a bit annoying, but it doesn't interfere with screen reading in any way.
I'm really happy with the upgrade and think the TP2 is the best phone out there by far.

I live in Arizona and when I walk outside the screen disappears! OTOH, so do the screens of all other devices as well.
I'm hoping someone makes an anti-glare screen protector for the TMoUS TP2 soon.
S

once they make it, and I'm sure they will, get a boxwave antiglare protector. I use them on all mydevices dating back to my original sony clie and swear by them. Problem solved.

The screen is not very good outdoors in sunlight or in shade. It is too hard to see. I am a BlackBerry user and can always see my Bold and 8900 in the car but I cannot safely even attempt to use the Touch Pro 2.

I can't understand why a company like HTC would release a brand new model of the Kaiser (now called Rhodium), and not fix the critical issues of its predecessor. The latest versions of the Blackberries work very well outdoors. I had a curve model 8900. It was not a touch sensitive screen, so I don't know if that could make the difference. Perhaps somebody with an iPhone or another touch screen device can tell us if they work well outdoors.

As a previous Kaiser Owner, and living in the sunny UK
The Screen of the TP2 is much better outdoors, the Kaiser was very bad for anything outdoors... GPS etc etc...

DOXBOX on Rhodium?
Hello, is there a doxbox that can work on the rhodium?
Would like to play Command & Conquer on this badboy.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems that most of you feel that there is definitely and improvement in the Rhodium screen characteristics which makes it useful when operating out in the open sky. That's definitely a plus point that is leaning me towards upgrading.
The other thing that I want to check before deciding whether this is a worthwhile upgrade for me is the video acceleration.
Could those of you who answered this thread go to the following one and tell us about your video acceleration.? As you provably know the Kaiser (ATT Tilt / TyTn II) has capable chips, but no drivers for proper acceleration and the video playback, games playback and others suffers as a result. I am wondering if the Rhodium comes with the right drivers to operate the video chips, and how the video performance compares to other devices out there. The Kaiser underperformed even really cheap phones, so hence my concern.

if you actually use the kaiser light to the highest! while outdoor, you should have a better view then say using the TP2. I was with my wife, and I gave her my tilt, until I get the tmobile agree to sign a new contract for mytouch 3g since I already have five lines...on a family plain. when I noticed her phone was bright I was like let me check mine, and I couldn't see....I think tilt is a cool phone even after two years....you know you better keep tilt if you don't need to upgrade...PS my TP2 was on auto light!

Iphone 2g is not very good in the sunlight, neither is the TP2 or the T-mobile google phones, either one. The BB 8900 is very usable in direct sunlight. Of the phones mentioned I'd have to say that the TP2 screen is the least legible in sunlight. That's the way it seems to go with cell phones, unfortunately they all have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Quite surprised to read your statement recommending us to keep the Tilt instead of upgrading. I like it when somebody takes a bold stance like this one; but I would appreciate it if you could elaborate a bit more on your recommendation.

I live in Portugal and in the summer i have to go into shade to see my screen, but as another poster noted, I've never had any colour screen PDA or phone work. The only screen I know here that really works was a friends Motorola with what appeared to be an e-ink screen (black and white, looked like print).

Is that your experience with the Rhodium or with the Kaiser?
I guess I have been spoiled! I had a Blackberry Curve 8900 and I could use it as a GPS outdoors without ANY problems what-so-ever with regards to seeing the screen even in bright daylight, without shade, etc.
The Blackberry Curve 8900 does not have a touch screen though. So perhaps the touch screen technology isn't 'sun and sky' compatible. Does anybody have experience using the new models of the iphone outdoors? I don't want an iphone, but I am curious to know if that touch screen technology suffers from the same problems as the Kaiser and Rhorium

I have a Kaiser and TP2 if much better. Go for it.

I purchased a Rhodium (Att Tilt 2) and I am very happy with it. The screen quality is a huge improvement. It reads well outside, reacts well, etc. My only complaint is that I miss the up/down/right/left/center 'joystick' like keys on the Kaiser.

Touch Pro 2 Phone Arena video?

Whoever that person is must really have a chip on his shoulder about HTC phones. In the review he blatantly states that the phone's screen is "useless" in daylight and that the speakerphone "is horrible". They are disappointed with the "in call" quality (sounds like a service provider issue?). The earpiece is "not clear and discernable enough". Lastly, "despite being one of the most heavily advertised features of the phone, the loudspeaker performs really bad and delivers bad quality both ways." wth is this guy talking about? Anyway, I am about to find out hopefully this weekend. A friend of mine is going to try to do a video review of the Touch Pro 2 he just ordered. Delivery is today or Monday. The only thing that cannot be tested is the 3G performance, but only because it is the Euro Touch Pro 2.
Makes me want to do a "youtube response" video to this phone arena guy.
Even though it's in another language, the following video link shows that the speakerphone is super clear. Way clearer than my Touch Diamond, Wing, Dash, or iPhone. I don't understand where this guy's comments are coming from. There's better cellphone speakerphone performance than this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9Yl0_4oEPM
my review
Well I tested it and wrote the review for Tracyandmatt.co.uk I had absolutely no problems. Agreed, the screen is a pain in direct sunlight, but so is nearly every other screen that I have ever tested! The problem is that you can really see the "touch" part of the screen sensors.
As for the speaker phone, its brilliant in a conference room, not bad in a pub, crap in a really really noisy environment. It is designed for a conference room!
Overall I love this phone!
My earpiece is much clearer and importantly louder that the TyTNII.
The Speaker is also much better .... not as good as the marketing .... but much better that other HTC devices I've tried.
Although a little thin, it makes a good loudspeaker for the radio as well.
The screen is the best I've ever seen - inc the iPhone which I have to say ... forgetting the resolution was always very good (friends have them). It is also massively improved outside ... you can actually see the maps in bright sunshine ... you could never do that with the TyTNII and TyTN.
3G and HSDPA performance is fantastic .... I never had an issue with the TyTNII except at home where I'm on the edge of Vodafone coverage. The TP2 is better for GSM and data at home and really fast with HSDPA.
I agree ... he must have a problem with HTC or WM in general.
Aside from my bouncy left edge to the screen .... it is as close to perfect as I've ever seen .... and it really does look as smooth as the iPhone .... in fact .... aside from the thickness which is required for the keyboard .... given that they screen is central and fills the bottom except for the 4 very thin buttons .... it is more symmetrical than the iPhone with it's big depression in the middle (main button).
Love it.
Paul.
oh yeah, got a reply video up...well, it's sorta a reply video. Just something my friend and I quickly came up with. Check out the video.

Rhodium or Hero

Tell me guys.
Went from a tytn2 to a Raphael...
Should I go for the Hero or TP2 ?
Never used a Hero.
The TP2 from T-Mobile is hands-down the best WM-based device I've ever had my paws on. You can pry it from my cold, dead fingers.....

Do you want a Windows Mobile phone with a brilliant physical keyboard and lots of neat business features that also does a reasonable job of multimedia, or do you want an Android-powered, multimedia-oriented device with a capacitive touchscreen that supports multi-touch, and which also does a reasonable job of business-oriented stuff? The two are really very different. It would make more sense to be having trouble deciding between a Hero an iPhone - they're much more similar in philosophy (IMO).
i dint really get the difference between the two types of screens...capacitive and resistive.
I played a bit with an iPhone 3GS today and it felt really good...i like the iPhone because everything just works... but I got bored after 3min of playing with it.
just the thought of not being able to flash new roms etc. makes me puke.
I like my RAPH but i would like a bigger screen, better(faster/smoother) handling of multimedia(pics/music/video) like iPod on iPhone, sort of.
so its down to winmo or android.
I was also thinking weather to go for hero or the touch pro2 but the touch pro2 has an amazing keyboard and watching movies on it look pretty impressive and i dont mind it not using a 3.5 mm jack as i use a stereo bluetooth headset. So i went for the touch pro2 and WOW im glad i did, im writing this from my touch pro 2 now.
It also has a reasonably good stock rom, the stock rom on my wizard was hopeless and if it wasnt for xda-developers i would never of had it for so long.
TP2 definetly, because the hardware keyboard that for me is a must!
The telephone conferencing and voice features are really good. Easy to setup and to use. Sound is good too. Credit to HTC for adding features that are fundamental to a what a good business phone should have.
I really don't like the way the Hero looks. Just for that I would go with the TP2.

capacitive screens are designed for finger-friendly touches. when you touch the screen with your finger, the press generates an electric stimulus that the phone reads as a press. capacitive screens can't use normal styli, so there is a loss in accuracy
resistive screens are designed for accuracy, due to the use of styli
I got the Tmobile Touch Pro2 and I am very happy with it - awesome screen size and acceptable thickness for a fullsize keyboard. hulu.com on skyfire for this screensize totally rocks. I have heard that the flash browser of Hero is slow, but then again - it hasn't been XDA-fied yet (not that I know of, anyway).
But I am in the same boat as you - want the Hero too!!!
Good news is that I have a work ATT phone that will be up for renewal in October, hopefully when the Hero comes in!
Can't really help you with your choice except say - go to the Tmobile store and see the TMobile touch pro2 in person.
And don't count out the diamond2 either.
It truly is a great time to have HTC shares....hmmm maybe I should be looking into that! lol!

Resistive screens need to be pressed quite hard, while capacitive ones only need to be touched lightly. Capacitive screens tend to be more responsive, so they will probably track your finger better when scrolling, and there's less likely to be any ambiguity about whether you've pressed something or not. But the most significant difference (aside from the fact that you can't use a stylus with a capacitive screen) is that a capacitive screen, given appropiate OS support, can support multi-touch - that is, it can detect being pressed in more than one place at once.
So, on the Hero and iPhone if you're running (say) Google Earth, you can rotate the map by putting your thumb and forefinger on the screen and twisting your hand. You can also zoom in and out by putting thumb and forefinger either side of a section of the screen, then moving them together or apart. This is much more convenient and intuitive than the TP2's zoom bar.

A jail-broken iPhone is actually pretty flexible.
I almost bought an iPhone rather than a TP2. It was really only the cost that put me off in the end. (Not the absolute cost, but it's too expensive for what it is). The user-interface design on an iPhone really is beautiful - it's not just that everything works, it's that everything works intuitively and quickly and neatly. The lack of a physical keyboard was also a problem for me (as I'm rather clumsy and have short, fat fingers) but the on-screen keyboard on an iPhone is the best I've seen; and the lower resolution of the screen (on iPhone or Hero) niggles a bit - for mobile web-browsing the extra screen res on a TP2 or Diamond2 really makes a difference for reading small text.
The call quality is also very good on a TP2 - I need phones to be clear and loud as I'm partially deaf. People hear you very clearly on the TP2 as well, thanks to the high-quality soise-cancelling microphones.

Tilt2 & HTC Touch Pro2 screen comparison

For pictures check here
Does anyone have Tilt2 and HTC Touch Pro2 so you can compare the screen between the two.
I have HTC Touch Pro2 and just got a Tilt2. The screen coloring and contrast on Tilt2 is not as nice as Touch Pro2. The whites seem like they have a shade of blue, if you view the phones side by side on different angles the Touch Pro2 is much nicer again and the coloring seems off too. TF3D coloring does not look as rich or the right coloring on Tilt2 when compared to Touch Pro2.
HTC responded to my article on HTCPeida.com and admitted that the screens were different:
"Indeed, the Tilt 2 does have a slightly different screen from other Touch Pro2 models – the performance is identical, but while the color looks close to identical when looking straight (or nearly straight) on, this screen does have a bit more color shift than other Touch Pro2 models when viewed at a more severe angle. But, it is important to note that this isn’t a defect or problem with the code – it’s simply a result of the specific screen being used in the Tilt 2.
To be honest, when you aren’t comparing it side by side with another Touch Pro2, you’d never notice, but it does become a bit more apparent when you look at two devices next to one another. "
Um.. screens are 100% the same.. maybe you got a defective Tilt2

Crappy video, taking with old digital cam but you can see the difference in screens. Both are flashed with identical ROM and clean install of ROM.
My wife and I bought Treo 680's at the same time a few years ago and hers was noticeably bluer than mine. Day to day use of it you wouldn't notice it, but side by side mine looked whiter.
I suspect variations in manufacturing in the LCD or perhaps even some of the other layers on top of the LCD.

This is true you can take any two phones by the same company and compare them and the screens will be a little different, if you never place the EUR or Telstra next to the tilt 2 you would never know because both phones are very good quality. I have my AT&T ROM up. Keyboard works fine but for the OK key and you can use a small app to remap the OK key.
The AT&T ROMs have PTT, Video share, dialer and softkeyboard from AT&T ROM. I will have an updated version in a day or two.
Sorry to ruin your day but out of the Tilt2, HTC TP2 and T-Mobile TP2 the Tilt2 has the worst screen.
I had to AT&T Tilt's and one had a nicer screen than the other (whiter wights and brighter). I think sometimes the screen can very from device to device. It bothered me a bit at first but I learned to live with it.
I love the screen on my Tilt2, but this concept bothered me a lot. I just got back from a Verizon Wireless store.
I compared both side by side, I *think* you are correct that the VZW is slightly crisper.
But walking outside, looking again at my Tilt2 screen, I dont really have any issue with it at all. I dont see any tinge of blueishness in the white.
Its by far the best screen on a phone I've seen

At0mAng,
Thanks for posting this information with pictures. I received my tilt 2 yesterday evening. After reading this thread, I checked my phone, and had the same issue. This evening I went to two stores, and in one of the store, there where two phone on display and both had the same issue. So I didn't wanted to replace my phone at this store, so I went to a different store, after telling the issue, the sales person, started a new phone and to my surprise, even that had the same problem. So I came back with my phone with out replacing it. I am still waiting to replace it, before I flash the HardSPL and the custom ROM.
Is this normal for the tilt 2? I think we should check the serial number or something to identify with out starting the phone. Is it possible to find which batch don't have this issue?
Thanks
Maybe it is all the AT&T bloatware sucking power from the backlight....
this has been documented
it speaks about this issue in this article here. http://www.wmexperts.com/touch-pro-2-head-head-head-head

Here is my problem i need animated weather maps for my job i know the vibrant only has 2.1 now is there any walk around to get weather maps to animate on 2.1 or should i look at the g2 please i need some help. your suggestions would greatly help

AMOLEDs are known for poor readability in bright light. SAMOLED helps, but it's still not as good as a decent LCD AFAIK.
Go with the G2.
I had the phone in direct sunlight yesterday and it was clear to me. Way better than my old hd2.
I miss the big screen.

The difference isn't that amazing.
These are the resaons why I choose not to get the Vibrant:
1. The housing of the case is made of cheap, painted plastic. it flakes and chips easily and I was concerned the phone would not last 2 years.
2. The Samsung UI was not user replacable without rooting the phone. I should not have to root my damn phone in order to get the UI expierence that works best for me.
As for the G2, I am on the fence about keeping it or not. Some issues are coming to light that are quickly adding to the "I don't like list". Among these:
1. the Keyboard design maybe less durable that I thought.
2. Battery life is borderline on what I find acceptable. This may be solvable, but I don't know yet.
3. the phone is thicker than I thought I could live with.
4. The volumn control is easily hit while using the keyboard.
5. The screen is harder to see in direct sunlight than the myTouch 3G I have owned for the past year.
6. T-Mobile _may_ have instrumented some hardware to interfere with might right to use the device as I see fit.
7. Though not strictly the phone, I have yet to see > 4Mpbs sustained in the Redmond/Seattle areas.
8. I am having a hard time hearing callers by naturally holding the phone to my ear. I find that I need to move the ear grill around my ear to keep a consistent, understandable volumn.
What I like about the G2:
1. Screen size is perfect and indoors, is really nice.
2. Though a little thick, the width and hight of the phone make it easier to handle than the myTouch 3G.
3. Though I may find issue with the durability, the design for expsoing they keyboard is nice.
4. Android 2.2 is very fast on the hardware and the UI expierence is a joy to use.
5. Andriod 2.2, in general, is much more polished than in 1.6 found on the myTouch 3G.
6. Tethering via USB with PDAnet continues to work well for my limited needs.
7. The camera, for a cell phone camera, takes great pics. I was able to get night pics the myTouch can't take and my Canon SD940 has trouble with without fiddling with it.
8. Email and data access are just simple much easier.
9. The dialapp is much better than Andiord 1.6. No lag and no werid defaults.
thanks for the quick responses if anyone else has anything to say it woud be great
Engadget says "If you're looking for a top-tier Android player with little in the way of compromises, look no further. The G2 has arrived." Don't get me wrong SAMOLED looks brilliant that SLCD isn't too bad. But in the long run, software is what matters and thats why I feel the G2 is > then the Vibrant.

Ehh, the software is important but so is the hardware to run it. I think the G2 is a very capable phone that's going to last a long while and receive many software updates. I had my G1 since the day it came out until yesterday... mostly due to the big developer base keeping it current with new hacks and features. I hope the G2 gets perma-rooted and goes the same way as the G1. Even if it doesn't, this is an incredibly fast, solid phone - hardware and software-wise. IMO.

Lumia 900 Review and Discussion

Got the phone two days ago, have been using it a bit since then, here are some general pros/cons, with a more detailed write up following some more use. Hopefully this can help some people make a decision on whether to purchase or keep the phone themselves. I will not comment on the software (most newer WP7 phones work just about the same here), aside from the Nokia specific apps/stuff.
Anyway, I have read probably two dozen Lumia 900 reviews, and everyone seems to have their own opinion (with some general themes shared amongst them), so here is mine:
Pros
Build quality is fantastic, best phone I have ever held. Feels amazing and snug in your hand. I am a fan of the square look, as opposed to the rounded edges of most devices. I actually prefer the Flash to the Focus S in that respect.
Built in speaker is loud, much louder than my Focus S, which is nice, but maybe a little "tin-ey"
Call quality is amazing, and signal strength is better than my Focus S (plus the 4G in MD really flys)
Screen looks fantastic (indoors). Blacks are inky black, colors pop, whites are less blue than the Focus S, and it seems to be brighter too. I don't understand how someone could choose an SLCD over this display. Sit them side by side (the Titan II in my case), and the colors just look pathetic.
With that said, looking at text is fine. Don't let PPI pundits fool you, you cannot tell a difference between say the Nexus and the 900 (partially because the Nexus uses the dreadful pentile). You really do not need HD resolutions on a 4" display, unless you plan on holding it inches from your face, which is just silly (@ a distance of ~10in, your eye can no longer tell the difference between HD and non-HD on a 4.3in screen, and its only about 7in on an iPhone sized screen). And don't even mention the iPhone, comparatively its like looking at a postage stamp, no thanks!
Auto adjust screen intensity actually works well
Nokia apps are great, especially Drive and ESPN
Color is sexy. An identical theme choice would have been sweet.
Chrome finish on the surrounding lens area is nice
Battery life, holy cow, is great. I am on day two of mild use and am still at 50% battery.
Capacitive buttons have a slightly different feedback to them than I am used to, I like it. They are also slightly more difficult to trigger, which is actually a good thing.
Slightly newer OS version
Nokia specific theme is much better than the default blue
Some Nokia specific sounds, which are generally improvements to the default ones
VVM! The phone has you set it up on first boot, so I assume(hope) it works!
Price, hell yea, I made $80 on this phone!!!
Cons
Bevel around the screen (I hate it, hurts my ear, my biggest gripe)
Speaker can be too loud at low volume settings
Can't seem to get my gmail to sync (very weird, I will need to get this fixed ASAP). All other syncing has worked just fine.
Location and size of lens and chrome is odd, your fingers are always on them when holding the device. Could gunk up that area quickly.
Weird sim card slot (its not terrible, its just strange, not in a good way). Silly Sim card remover (basically a souped up paper clip)
Non-removable battery, though I would gladly give this up for the build quality and design
Its a bit heavy and large. Not extremely so, just more so than expected. I think the device footprint could have been smaller, and I am not sure why it weighs what it does to be honest.
Screen scrolling does not feel quite as responsive as some other models. What I mean by this is scrolling seems to be slower, and you can't really throw it in one direction and have it scroll rapidly through a list quite as fast as I was used to.
Off white capacitive buttons, that do not brighten up like some other models
Pre-installed Tango needs to be replaced do allow for non-WiFi calling
Outdoor screen performance not as awesome as I expected. Don't get me wrong, its better than the Focus S, its just not all I thought it would be. I expected near indifferent performance indoors vs. out, with the hype the display received, but that is not the case.
I am not a fan of the button placement. It will take some getting used to. I have large hands, so the power button where it is is really a strain on my thumb to reach.
I can't really comment on the camera, because I have not used it much. Though what I have heard is the screen itself does not do the images justice. So do not judge their quality until you get them off the device, onto a computer or printed out. Hopefully a software update can address any deficiencies here.
Even though the specs are similar, I consider this a significant upgrade from my Focus S, both in quality, design, and features.
Hopefully this is useful information. And hopefully some more details should be incoming. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Good post emjlr3.
Since we're being honest here, I'll add a couple of gripes to the thread.
Apparant lack of Visual Voicemail. (since found out it is wrongly provisioned account and a call to the ATT rep or online chat will resolve it)
Sim card slot does not sit perfectly frush after inserting sim.
Was surprised at the lack of things in the box. (earphones, instruction manual)
The placement of the mini usb. (I prefer bottom mounted. I suppose we'll never be able to use any music dock easily, etc?)
This is also just my personal opinion. I think it's a great phone. Beautiful and slick. Hope it holds up as well as my HD7 did.
has anyone noticed the purplish reflectance when in direct sunlight?
seems to only happen when I can actually see the suns reflection on the phone screen, and I see what look to be purple sun rays off a few random directions - I guess it must have something to do with the special coating.
