Hi Guys,
Had my Desire a week now and loving it, but have a small by very frustrating problem. Sometimes and I have yet been able to reproduce this consistantly, the conneciton swaps to data from Wi-Fi while asleep, when I wake it up the phone works fine and uses the data connection but wont re-connect to the wireless.
In settings it list no avalable wireless networks, if I turn the wireless on and off it says its connecting to my network for a second and then gives up and says not in range, there are 5 other networks that should be in range and it list none of them. I have tried an app from the market that scans wireless and it has the same problem nothing is listed as seen. If I set airplane mode on and off the wireless jumps back into life lists all networks and connects back to mine. This has happened twice at home (uses WPA/PSK) and once at work (uses WEP).
As I said I cant reproduce this all the time and its fine to use the data connection but dont know why I have to airplane mode in order to get it back, do you guys think its a hardware or software problem am I rebooting the wireless hardware when I toggle airplane mode but not when I turn just wireless on/off? Should I try factory reset or send it back for repair? Has anyone else ever seen this?

Try a factory reset first and see how it goes from there

I've found out that my wifi calling is being used even though I have it off in the settings of the phone. Although it's off I still can select the options under Connection Preferences: Wifi Perfered, Cellular Networkin Prefered and Never use Cell Network (not sure if that matters or not). I choose the 2nd option and noticed dropped calls around the outer edge of my wifi. But wifi calling is turned off. How do you permanently turn this feature off?
I do use wifi when I'm within my wifi area. But had no idea that wifi calling was still being used when set to off. Do I have to disable wifi all together?
Ok. I've found out that this is known issue doing more a search online. The only fix is to disable wifi altogether. There have been other suggestions but none of them fix it. I've heard that exchanging the sim chip that disables wifi calling might work but haven't heard anything consistent with that fix.
I'm just perplexed by this. This is a great phone yet whenever you enable wifi you enable wifi calling regardless if it's off. I just don't get how something like this would be considered a standard feature when other phones just don't do that by default. If I didn't stumble upon this information I would have never guessed that it was the main cause for my dropped calls.

NP, I have to wonder if this is really a standard none controllable feature on the phone or if the carrier can disable it?. If wifi calling is controllable on the phone and you can turn it on or off jet remain on then I have to wonder what other external force is keeping it on when you turn it off?
Did the maker just simply forget to remove the ability to control wifi calling because turning it off simply doesn't work.

Another thing I've found that seems to be related to this. If you try to access your acct while Wifi is enabled it suppose to switch from wifi to 4G but it doesn't (and you can't access your account in tmo. while in wifi. Perhaps different software updates were used but it was seamless back then on a different phone.
This brings up another interesting observation. Once wifi is enabled you can't auto enable your 4g network when it's needed. IE: You can't review your acct for one. Is there a way to make sure that your phone has 4G LTE priority whenever wifi is enabled?
I don't know also how to prioritize the 4G LTE over wifi, good observation.

Update, I was able to use an old version of my account (which was used on an older phone) and was able to confirm that it is programed to disable wifi connection and activate the 4g services while using the my acct app without having to disable wifi manually. A message even popped up to tell you so. And once you exited the my acct app it would restore your wifi connection from 4g. So it is controlled via the program itself.
So it begs the question, why doesn't the newer version not do this? This now looks like 2 separate issues with wifi and wifi calling.

I just found a way to verify if wifi calling is still enabled even though you have it disabled on the Note 3. Here is what you need to do.
1. Make sure that wifi calling is disabled
2. Make sure that wifi is already enabled and in use
3. Stand right next to your wifi router
4. Make a call
5. Listen to hear any wired sounding ringback (the sound you hear to let you know that a call is actually ringing the recipients phone).
6. If you do notice a wired sounding ringback complete the call and stay on the line for about 30 seconds or so.
7. Disable wifi while on the call.
8. Once disabled did your call drop?
This is what I did in order to verify if wifi calling is still enabled even though I have it disabled on my phone.
I'm not going to say it's happening to every one. Nor would I suggest it's a bad feature for those who need wifi calling. I just don't understand why I'm forced to use wifi calling when I fully capable of using my 4g network.

Can you check and tell if you still have signal (bars) when you are connected to WiFi? Or does it become blank (0 bars)?

Standing right next to the router I have full bars.

That is weird. I tried your steps, I couldn't recreate the problem. Just to make sure, I was talking about the phone network signal, not Wifi signal.
If the bars were becoming 0, there is a fix. But otherwise, it may be a faulty unit. You can try and get it replaced.

Rahulisola, thanks for the link. I was able to fix the issue by doing a factory reset. Not sure what caused it but now I can disable wifi and the call stays connected. Although I found it odd that wifi calling was forced enabled during the reset while I was setting up the wifi network. Disabling it after the factory reset setup did prove it was really off this time. I also noticed that I'm not seeing "HD Voice" which I know assume is related to wifi calling. As I've seen HD Voice whenever I was within my wifi range during a call.
Also, Lorettaa thanks for looking into this as well. I really don't know what caused the problem but I'm glad it's fixed now . No more of pitched ring backs while making a call. And no more odd echo voices when talking. And most importantly no dropped calls.

Glad that it is solved. Usually I always do factory reset 1st and ask anyone with problems to do that too. My bad, I assumed you had already done it. Must be some other thread. Too much work catching up on me

UPDATE: Problem solved. Turns out it's an issue with the WIFI scanning in LOCATION, not in the wifi settings. While I still think this is an issue with the firmware, at least there's a way to get it to stop freaking out until they get it fixed.
Whenever I turn on the Wifi, it will often begin a cycle of rapidly turning off and back on again. If you watch the switch that indicates 'on' and 'off', it's constantly fluctuating between the two. -Immediately- after the switch shows it's turned on, the text just below the switch says "turning off.." and it turns off, immediately afterward turning back on, and the process repeats constantly until the phone dies.
Something is either forcing it to turn off, or forcing it to turn on. I've tried adjusting the settings for my third-party texting app (Textra), and even after disabling the entire app and using the stock one, the issue persisted.
I've tried restarting, I've tried clearing the cache via the bootloader.
I've exhausted the entire suite of options in settings for anything Wifi related, no configuration of settings has resolved the issue, including turning off wifi scanning.
I've tried entering the combination of "#", "*", and 0's and 1's (can't remember it off the top of my head) to access the wifi settings to turn off the power saving, but my phone under the listed model and firmware showed no such option.
The problem persists in any location, so I know it's not anything to do with the network I'm trying to connect to.
The only way I've gotten it to stop is going to the wifi settings menu, and rapidly tapping the switch while it constantly goes back and forth. I've managed to get it to stay in the "on" position, but that's the closest thing to a fix I've been able to find.
I've combed through many threads in the AT&T Note 5 troubleshooting topic, and can hardly find anything that describes this particular issue, only with wifi "not staying connected" or other obscure descriptions that upon further inspection were -not- the issue I'm having here.
Were it up to me I would root the thing and put stock Nougat on there and be done with it. But alas, AT&T has removed that option.
I am willing to do a factory reset, but I'd like to know if anyone else has had this issue and if there is any other way to solve it, so I can avoid it in the future.
Settings > wifi > more (top right corner) > advanced > always allow scanning - set to 'off'
Like I said, I've exhausted all possible options in the menus relating to wifi.
This is what I see when I go into the "Advanced" settings in Wifi.
Network Notification (on or off)
Hotspot 2.0 (on or off)
Keep wifi on during sleep (never)
Auto connect to AT&T wifi (on or off)
Install network certificates
MAC address
IP address
That's all there is. I just factory reset my phone, restored it, and the problem in the OP persists.
I rebooted it in safe mode, and the problem still persists. At this point, it looks like it's an issue with the individual handset, unless there's anything I've missed. This is beyond frustrating.
Sorry but can you explain to me how you stop this from happening?

Kill AT&T Wifi Direct and AT&T Hot Spots.. Remove them as System Apps also.. You should get a message that it is replacing it with the stock version somewhere along this path then your wifi will work flawlessly again even with 5GHz, go figure I guess Google does a better job at WiFi.'

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I've been Googling around and can't seem to find an answer to this question. I have my S9+ and it updated to Pie a few days ago. Since then, I've been having issues with Wi-Fi calling. It works correctly, but it will keep trying to "Optimize" using Wi-Fi or Cellular.
This is an issue, as I work in an office building with nearly zero cell service anywhere, with maybe one or two patches of it that pop in off an on. I've noticed that throughout the day it'll randomly switch back and forth, sometimes four or five times in a row. I've been looking EVERYWHERE to see if there's a way to turn off their "Optimization" setting, but can't find anything. I want it to stay on Wi-Fi, and not automatically swap to cellular whenever it feels like it. This was the default behavior on Oreo.
Any help would be appreciated!

When you're in phone settings and touch Wi-Fi calling, do you have "Mobile network preferred" selected?
The problem is that it automatically changes to whatever it thinks is "best", because it's being "Optimized" by some system setting.
There's a couple of wifi settings in Developer Mode, have you looked at those?
I have the Note 10+ non 5G version, unlocked.
Carrier = Verizon
Phone has a setting "Allow access only for this trip" for data under Mobile networks > Data roaming access".
Does anyone know how the phone detects the start and end of a trip?
I thought phone would ask for a duration for my trip, but no. It appears to be automatic so the phone automatically guesses what my trip is? Maybe based on GPS data?
I left it at "Allow access only for this trip" for several months during which I took many trips out of the country and I always had data when I was out of country, without having to re-enable "Allow access only for this trip". Also, setting remains at "Allow access only for this trip" after traveling back home. I thought it might have reset the setting to Deny access, but nope.
From my point of view the setting is equivalent to data roaming "always on" but I'd like to know more about how this works, I'm sure I'm missing something.
Obviously I searched the user manual and googled this topic extensively, but other than saying that the setting exists I found no info on how it actually works to detect when a trip starts and ends.
it is likely on network detection, if you are in another country you will be on that countries local network, then when you get back home you will go back to your home network, this would likely be the most simple way for it to detect it.

Follow-up question is:
Is the expected behavior that when you return home (on your home carrier network) that the setting doesn't change from "Allow access only for this trip" (that's what happens for me, consistently)?
Then when you take the next trip, what happens? Do you have roaming data, or not (the setting hasn't changed and is still set top "Allow access only for this trip" at the start of the next trip, do you have to select the same setting again even if it's already selected (as a radio button setting) otherwise you won't have roaming data?
