dear guys, i know you are the best in upgrading our smartphones, do you know if there is, or soon will be an upgrade to wm6.1 for s620???
tnx
Not yet.. but I think that soon it will come to S620.
We are all waiting for this update
I actually got to play with a Windows Mobile 6.1 Dash but it still seemed to lag a fair amount. Just had a flashier home screen. Everything seemed to be the same. They added Copy and Paste as well.

Oh man that's great news!!! I am excited. At least that confirms that there is a very high chance we will have to upgrade. Hopefully it will become more stable and not have memory leaks.
Thanks Jamerican....
did you check the new PIE how is it, does it have flash???
How about threaded sms like the PPC version has??
i'm actually really curious about wm6.1 too. I know it's out already, so where are the ROMs at? BTW, does anyone have access to HTC's downloads for the S620-621? When I attempted to register my unit with the serial # at their site, it wouldn't let me since it knew it was T-Mo Dash instead.
EDIT: well a quick search on google yielded this interesting result:
http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13800
I guess that's why we're not seeing any wm6.1 devices anytime soon...
even so, here at xda-developers you can see upgrades to 6.1 for some devices, so i guess we´ll just have to wait a little bit, but its going yo be here i´m sure
Google is your friend. Many websites have covered the new WM6.1 features. Basically it comes out to these:
* Threaded SMS - A Chat like function for your SMS Inbox
* Zoom out in Pocket IE - Enables Page overview mode and better navigation
* One Note included in Office Mobile
* Running Programs tab in Settings > Memory replaced to a better Task Manager. (But the previous running programs tab was much simple and easier)
* A new Managed Programs menu
As you can see, no mention of flash incorporation in PIE. Personally, I won't upgrade until it is as fast as the HTC ROM I'm using now. I am, however, really excited about threaded SMS.
wm6.1 does exist for the dash.
Lets put it this way. People have HTC excalibur running wm6.1. 6.1 adds a new home screen, better IE (much better IE), copy & paste, new version of active sync, etc, etc. WM6.1 is also faster. I'm not sure when this will be avaliable to everyone... but it does exist.
Actually I tried it at a M$ event at my school. The lady said it would take at least 10 months for consumers to see it. That does not include carrier customization etc. Pissed me off.

How come the Wing users have the 6.1 and not us! When I had the Wing the 6.1 made it SOOO much better....sucks having to wait

Yup, i'll vouch for this. I have open touch v3 on my wing and love it. Sometimes i like to go out with my dash since its slimmer and wow its like night and day how slow it is. Even with the new HTC rom that was posted...
Am I missing something here? When did the Wing get a system that isnt released yet? I am confused

WM 6.1 is alive and well on the PPC platform. First batch of WM 6.1 Professional ROMs hit the scene about a week and a half ago and I may be wrong about this but I believe the wing (HTC Herald) was the first to get it from our fine chefs here on XDA-DEV. Still waiting on a 6.1 Standard version for our favorite non-touchscreen devices (HTC Excalibur etc)...
Also don't forget that fortunately/unfortunately the touchscreen devices are way more popular than the non-touchscreen devices.
Personally I believe my T-Mobile Dash running the HTC ship rom is way more stable than any other Windows Mobile device I have ever owned, and I've had quite a few as can be seen in my sig.
Thats interesting, I had no idea!
I don't want to waste time flashing my Dash with a cooked 6.0 ROM (HTC ROM) if 6.1 is only a few weeks away. Any estimate from the ROM cookers on a 6.1 release for the Dash?

Haha, yeah good thing I didn't waste my time with a cooked 6.0 ROM...
This ever happed?
WM 6.1 for S621, Excalibur?
Official ROM release?
Why has manila been removed from most if not all of the 6.5 roms?
Am I missing something here? The 'new' interface for win mo 6.5 seems to me to be absolute rubbish as an interface. I have installed XBmod over the top.
What's the point of this new interface? It's limited at best. If you compare it to say the new iphone 3.0 os (I'm a win mo fanboy by the way) it's embarrassing.
Surely TF3d2 is the way to go??

Take a look at some of the awesome panels and themes being developed over in 'Development and Hacking' and you'll understand. The themes are rich, customizable and very nice. ibrythill's WM7 one is a great example.
It's actually very flexible and functional. It can house heeeeappps more in those panels than Manila and then people are creating any sorts of plugins. Last night I read about a facebook panel that was just released. There are no facebook tabs for Manila, no 'create your own tab', no twitter tab etc.
I know I possibly made Manila sound bad but it is not by any means. Just a couple of reasons you'd want to try Titanium as a UI.
Cool thanks for that, wasn't aware of titanium etc etc will have a further look.
I was just looking at the basic homepage that comes with the roms and was a bit alarmed!
I think something cool should be on out of the box though when the new os comes out. as long as normal phone users dont have to mess about etc.
Well I suppose you can always put another homescreen like TouchFLO 3D on top of WM6.5. So it is very flexible to have a clean ROM and let users choose what suit them most.
BTW, the built-in kinetic scrolling of the WM6.5 is very good. I hope there would be a version of the TouchDLO 3D without the HTC kinetic scrolling.
I'm really sorry if this is posted to the wrong forum or is way too much of a noob question but I was wondering if any of you could explain what the differences are between the different Windows Mobile 6/6.1/6.5 versions?
I'm asking here because I have an 8525 and have been using it with the official HTC upgrade to 6.0 ever since that version was released. I have also been a long time user of SPB Pockets Plus and recently upgraded to SPB Mobile Shell 3 which I am finding to be an incredible improvement however I am wondering what the newer version's of Mobile would add to my phone?
In case this matters for the potential usefullness of different versions, I am currently using my phone as both a business phone (I am at onsites more than in my office) as well as for personal amusement so I tend to use its ability to surf the web, check my email, access logmein, read various file types including txt, rtf, pdf, lit, etc. I am considering getting a Fortress once they come out so I can have a bigger screen but I guess that will depend on the price. Anyways, if anyone could clue me in on what the benefits are on upgrading my 8525 to the various versions I would be most gratefull, thanks in advance.
Well
Im not an expert but im a user since windows mobile 2003.
Windows Mobile 2003: The OS was fast... its stability offers to the user a new experince on a usage for a phone... you know eventough in that years the awsome images from Nokia or some other phone with Symbian OS offers nicely at sees the phone contacts and you cand add a little mor programs... cause programs in a phone isnt anything important... important.... was the signal strength so... WM2003 offer all the windows apps to a new whole device... but windows mobile 2003 jumps to A phone version! it was amazing i remember wel the HTC Blueangel! it was a big jump cause even if I use a casiopedia with windows CE isnt amazing than WM2033 from the HP iPAQ it has phone signal now... not a treo cause it allows you to see and edit offiece files! the most magnifiq use of that OS was The bluetooth manager **** that was a wizard!
Lately comes the WM5
But what da heck WM5 was so ugly?
Windows Mobile 5
This is the jump betwen ne images and new performance but because of that the OS was soooooo slooooooow i remember its bar like metallic awful! lol!!!!!
But what about the performance? it was stable hard as a stone!!!! many apps mostly dissapear in that jump from 2003 to WM5 and many of new comes from wm5... i really think that if we could have another device with WM5 maybe i could be dissapointed and drop off the WM devices but fortunatly i found a HTC Wizard aka Qtek9100... it was nice but it was slow... i love the skype i love the push email with the AKU2 holy ****! was a big hit! that aku... but the most impressionant was that we can see mostly the same Inteface as WM2003 but kindly better... not so for me.
Windows Mobile 6
After fall in this big forum in 2007 i cant remember where do i get all my apps and cabs... hardly for sure... when i get here... i wasamazed how coul the WM5 looks like this awsome UI i remember the change betwen WM2003 to WM5 and a say amazing buit ugly compared to SYmbian or PAlm os, but it has a new Speed... amazing speed!!! the old lovley BT manager dissapears but the new commanager was amazing the OS was a amzing and the messenger! all that new apps with flash growin up... really muck me up... I hate in sometime this site cause i think i screwed up my phone... but i couldnt understand the entire process of unlockin a phone from an official to a custom rom... and my device dont boots anymore so... my batt drops to the bottom it has no charge to try another Original upgrade and save it... so i wait a little buy a wall batt charger and that do the trick.... So much apps came in WM6. the htc touch with the cube was so incredible!
Windows Mobile 6.1
This looks like the 6 but the only change I can feel is the Speed no the performance... but the NetCF came and save us all it gives so much stability so much speed and compatibility to some more apps and development becomes fats to show us the Visual programming... In this part... the Touchflo isnt compatible and many people try to reach the cube and get it works but nothing it couldnt happend! many Flash players do the trick but with so much ram in it... Time for the Manilla to arrives... I mean first the new Touchflo 2 in 3D with the amazing Diamond!!!!!! that was a crack!!! really all people try to hack that applet but... none can
so it must be something to do in older devices with Processors that dont has 3d acelerators... and someone did it... there is a forgotten thread a biiiiiiig thread developing the manila 2D working for NON HTC DEVICES patch and it works very well kind year ago or year and a half... the mostly change betwen the 6 and 6.1 was the threaded SMS its all about the speed to be important for 6.1 all the UI remains since wm5.
Windows Mobile 6.5
We all wait for WM7 and M$ comes with his 6.5 new UI honeycomb start menu... new titanium transparencies and so much!!!! letters from some private investigator from the developmente mobile department sayin we gonna screw you all if post anything about 6.5 comes to town in Blueangel device.... YES BLUEANGEL!!!!!! that old device with wm2003 was the first to get 6.5 and man.... THANKS really thanks to SUN DReam!!! to show us the new 6.5... its all about the UI theperformnce when every beta build comes more fast... more stable
nicely in UI they shuts off the hexagons on the start menu... and improves more things like icons... but in compatibility since wm6.1 to 6.5 the files xlsx or docx or pptx cames from office 2007 can be oppened here on our devices...
I hope you can find the answer as you wish...
But remember once you flash your first ROM you will never stop... is like an adicction.
+ Que PPC
Wow man, really well put. You just took me for a trip down memory lane. Seems like yesterday when we were all drooling over wm5 aku2 then the cube. The suspense of the porting of wm6 we all called vanila. I had almost forgoten. Time flies.
Awesome answer!!!! Good to see this explanations for us the newbies...great.

Its amazing how the time flies and we still have this awsome site to be indeed with old devices at top of the new OS coming!
Ah! the windows mobile 2003! was amazing but i love wm6.5, somebody here that uses WMCE or 2002?
Hi All
I made an upgrade yesterday; I previously had the stock HTC rom with Windows Mobile 6.1 & TouchFlo 2.1, and I hard reset, then upgraded to the official HTC Windows Mobile version 6.5.
Are there any other users who prefer the old version? The phone seemed so much smoother before the upgrade, it almost feels as though the hardware isn't up to the job of running the new version. I even preferred the old black and white Touch Flo menu colours, the colour ones don't look as nice. I don't really see any amazing 'must-have' new features on the OS either - as a result, i'll be 'downgrading' my phone, back to the old ROM 1.19.401.1 later today.
I wondered if there are others who feel the same way, or am I just not giving the new OS time to win me over?
Have a good weekend everyone....
LJ
Glad its not just me then...
Same here. I very much prefer WM 6.1. Multitasking on WM 6.5 is a pain and it is slow. Only problem is that I cannot initiate VoiceCommand over Bluetooth on the 6.1 ROM. That is the only reason why I moved to 6.5. And nobody seems to know a cooked 6.1 ROM that enables voicecommand over bluetooth.
Same here. After upgrading, and installing a few programs, I started having stability issues. Nothing serious, but I hadn't noticed that on WM6.1. Also, the battery consumption is higher, the memory consumtion is higher (I've seen it use as much as 85% of memory, which leaves about 40-45Mb free), and TF3D looks like it's half finished.
I've already flashed back to WM6.1. Maybe I'll try again if HTC releases an updated WM6.5, but until then I intend to enjoy my device with the original ROM.
Same here, tho I'll maybe try it again when verizon gets theirs together. After trialing many cooked 6.5's on my old tp I'm not a big fan. I think my tp2 as is, is a very outstanding device.
6.5 was on my TP2 for about 15 minutes. it seemed slower then the Orange shipped 6.1 ROM I've been happy with, but without any benefits. So im back on the Orange ROM.
May I ask how many of you have HardSPL'd to install an upgrade not meant for your device?
I only ask this because most others (including me) have noticed a marked improvement. Disregarding colours layout etc. as they are only personal preference.
I wonder if we are getting back to the old Kaiser/Tilt scenario where people forget the devices marketed for the US are HW different from the rest of the world due to US laws and US operators requirements and US having a different radio system to most others?

You make a very good point. In my case, the device in question is a standard, stock, UK unbranded TP2 from HTC, so I this scenario does not apply in my case, but I have tried it on a Vodafone UK handset which HAS been HardSPL'ed. Most people who are familiar with the Vodafone UK ROM know that it's plain ugly with one of the worst themes known to man
But yeah, it could indeed be the reason why some people are having problems.
I'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way too though - thanks all for sharing your thoughts. I guess in my case, a lot of it is just down to personal preference - plus, without realising it, the phone already did everything I needed it to, and did it well enough for me - so I don't really know what I thought 6.5 was going to do that would change that.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers all...
You could always turn off the TF3D and other Win 6.5 stuff and have a 6.1-ish homescreen in 6.5
But I love the new interface, it took me about 3 hours to get used to, and now I'd never go back
I'm a fan of 6.1 but it really sucks that all the new tf3d won't work on 6.1. I've come to terms with 6.5.1. I like that version of 6.5 but the regular interface to me just sucks!!
lol - Snap!
Im not overly fussed about TF versions and what not, the device is plainly slower on 6.5

I disagree, I have been using 6.5 on my Tytn II for ages and when I finally got my TP2 on Vodafone here in the UK I came home, HardSPL'd it and found a cooked 6.5 ROM that I liked (Thanks NRG) I have experienced no problems at all and it gets rid of the ugly Voda theme too.
I love 6.5 and couldn't stay on 6.1 for longer then I did.
Winmo 6.1 v 6.5 on touch pro2
Initially the upgrade was staccatto but a new hard reset fixed that. Wifi turns itself off now but gProfile still works so no worries there. MMS have gone back to early TP 1 mistake of flipping the image by 90degrees for MMS (annoying).
Battery life seems better and the web scrolls better with fingers (or is that me)
Couple of oddities -e.g. Text boxes dont wrap well on web pages. Also i have had to restart more often then 6.1. (tp2 6.1 is the most stable winmo ppc i have ever known)
I shall stick with it for now I think however.
In the end, I believe the phrase "To each his own.." is most appropriate. Some love WM 6.1, some love 6.5 and others absolute hate any official/stock ROM. That's the beauty of the HTC dev community, I think there is something for everyone!
Are they still using that horrible WIDCOMM bluetooth stack/driver on WM6.5 upgrade?
I totally agree with you.
I have downgraded to Orange's stock ROM.... That's the first time I find a stock ROM better than an official or cooked ROM.
It starts using 42% or less RAM
It works "correctly" (stilll has unexplained problems) with BB Connect.
It works fast (of course, there's 58% RAM left for software execution).... and with a few chnages, the GPS is effective.
What I miss from WM 6.5 is just the My Location option that doesn't exist in Orange's ROM.
I'll wait for their official 6.5 ROM and maybe will test it...

So you never really tried 6.1 on the TP2 and don't have a basis for comparison? (obviously 6.5 on the TP2 will work a lot better than on a TytnII, it's a case of apples and oranges).
Will try the upgrade when it comes out. Though I know from the screen shots I prefer the colour layout of TF3D2.1 to the colour icons of TF3D2.5
But I'll give it a try and go with what works best for me.

Power Functions in 6.1
I started a thread, posted in multiple threads, exchanged P.M.s, searched like it was my job and flashed multiple 6.1 variants. The one function, or lack thereof, that was the deciding factor for me was the power saving functionality in the media players response to pressing the power button to turn the screen off to save battery. It would stop the music playback!
My old Herald did this. The Fuze did this. Both on 6.1 Roms. Why the TP2 could not, with the smooth Tmobile stock Rom, I could not understand. I used so many different playes that all worked in the past. My current favorite is Nitrogen. But since I listen to music so much I couldn't have the sreen, even 'dim', for the hours I listen to music. My battery would be dead in no time.
This, ultimately, was the reason for me flashing and sticking with 6.5. If any one has found the magic registry edit or whatever for this fix, let me know.
Do you listen to your music with the speaker? Because my stock 6.1 US TMo TP2 continues to play via headphones just fine after pressing the power button. I'm no audiophile but I could not imagine listening to music on that speaker. Just thinking about it makes me shudder.

I have a T-Mobile HTC TP2. What version of Sense do I have and how can I tell? I am confused also about the difference between Sense, Touch Flow 3d, and how they interact with WM. Assume that they are both from HTC and maybe Sense is the phone software and Touch FLow 3D is the fancy today screen?
Sense and touchflo3d and tf3d and manila are all the same thing. The names have come from different locations over the years. Sense is the new name for any version 2.5 and up I believe.
It is software that runs in windows mobile. It takes over the visual interaction of the phone with the user. It is a more convenient interface than the standards windows mobile home screen. Most importantly it is a customized piece of software that HTC uses to make its windows mobile offering different from other manufacturers. Windows mobile is very much right under the surface, and is not very hard to get to. Just pushing the on screen windows logo will get you there.
The phone would be capable of doing all the same things without the sense interface. The experience would be different. In many cases you would need additional programs to replicate the functions that sense/touchflo roll up into 1 consistent interface.
That all said there are some who hate it, and flash to get rid of it as soon as they get their phone. To each their own. The best part of windows mobile is that you have choices.

boufa pretty much summed it all up there...Sense/TF3D/Manila are all referring to the shell interface that HTC built on top of plain 'ol WM. Manila is the name HTC uses for all of them, TF3D and Sense are just versions (kinda like generations) of Manila. The first Sense version was 2.0 technically, but you'll more often see 2.1 and 2.5. TF3D's last version was 2.1, which existed and was distributed at the same time as Sense 2.1 (not on the same model devices though lol)
You're running a stock ROM from Tmobile, right? And, have you upgraded the ROM at all since you bought the phone?

You probably have 6.1 if you are using stock Jan 2010 firmware. The way to tell between 2.1 and 2.5 is that 2.5 has shortcut icons below the clock; 2.1 does not.

Yeah, the odds are you have winmo 6.5, with Sense 2.1......unless you bought the phone before Jan or so, and never upgraded winmo after you bought it. In that case, you have winmo 6.1, with TF3D 2.1 (a manila version before sense)
Bought the HTC TP2 about one month ago. WM 6.1 Prof. I have not upgraded it to 6.5. Plan on doing it but I have loaded so much software in the last month, it will take me a weekend to put it all back on.

Gotcha, yes then what you have on there is TouchFLO3D (TF3D) 2.1, the last version of manila before sense. It looks very much like sense 2.1 in a lot of ways, but there are key differences going on behind the scenes that cause very few visual tweaks and adjustments to be compatible with both versions... but the good news is that pretty much any apps or tweaks you find on this site that say they apply to WM6.1/TF3D 2.1 should also work ok on your phone, even if they're for a different HTC model (the ones that don't will usually say so). There's less and less new TF3D stuff available in the TP2 forums now that every model has a 6.5 upgrade avialable, so you may find more stuff looking in the general windows area of the forums. But, keep an eye here too...beyond sense modifications there's still a ton of great stuff (apps, etc) that you can use on WM 6.1
when apply the t-mobile i upgrade to WM 6.5, will I get Manila, Sense 2.5?

Nope, 2.1 It still gives you a lot more options than TF3D, but it's nowhere near as versatile as 2.5.
Now, just be prepared for the fact that as you move up in manila versions (TF3D-sense 2.1-sense 2.5), you're likely to notice the phone slow down more. Each version is more "complex" than the last, and therefore more taxing on system resources.
so how do you get sense 2.5 with the tp2, or is that only for the hd2?
Install a custom ROM. If you've even slightly competent and are capable of following instructions carefully, there is basically no risk in installing a custom ROM. You can even revert back to the default ROM if you choose to later on. I don't think you can get rid of HardSPL, unfortunately, but I'm not sure. If you can't then I'm sure you'd probably void your warranty with a custom ROM should the phone encounter some unrelated hardware error later on.

Take a look at the ROM development forum, all questions can be answered in the first several topics.
