Hey guys,
I noticed if you type a really long SMS message, the HTC message app converts it into an MMS message? wtf? Why couldn't it just split it up into a batch of 160 character length messages? Is there any way to turn this function off?
I like the feature, in Australia an mms costs $0.5 whereas an sms with up to the 1000 character limit of an mms would cost me $1.5 I believe its a cost saving feature that they implemented.

Oh okay, I have a large cap so don't really care about the price but I can see that would be a good feature. I am just worried about how people with older handsets may receive these large mms messages that are just text? I don't know
Is there any apps that I can use to send messages to my brothers blackberry in dubai for free. It costs me 20p a text on virgin.
Any suggestions appreciated thanks
Whatsapp, you both need the app and a data connection. I think for now it's still free (at least on android) but after a year it's like 3 dollar per year.
If you download the app it asks for sms permissions but that is only to verify your phone number, the actual messaging will take place over data connection.
Thanks just installed that and have been sending pictures and chatting for free.
I would pay 3$ or whatever well worth it
Can someone tell me why when i send a text over 160 characters it sends it multiple messages. I can receive long text messages but cant send them. On CM7 and other sense 2.0 roms i was able to do this
Sometimes its just the way its coded. I never really noticed it on mine but if you use handcent it works perfectly

I've always had my messages split up when they were over 160 characters :/
This is intended. There is a 160 character limit on text messages. Some apps cut you off of typing at 160, others just use multiple texts... it depends. If you have a limited # per month plan, a 161 character text will count as 2.

I was noticing this if I did not go into the text and just read it from the preview. Just go to the text and it should remove the +1. I also use SMS popup and that fixes the issue with the reading of texts.
I use handcent and just disable the stock messaging app.

Is there any app that lets you send SMS without getting charged for an SMS. I have 125 SMS to send in a month and I have come close to surpass this. I was wondering if there was a way to send SMS for free with out using my plans SMS. I do not mean use messaging apps that both parties need to have installed. I mean an app that works via the internet and sends SMS server side so as not to cost me any SMS fees. Anyone know of such?

Unfortuantely Google voice does not work in Canada for sending out Text messages for free. I tried this already. I had it send 2 text messages and I was charged to them as though my phone sent it and I was charged for sending a text to US as well.
Seriously, textplus

That could just as easily be you're-not-using-it-right. A quick way to test: put your phone in airplane mode, then re-enable Wi-Fi (with airplane mode still on) and connect to a working AP. If you're set up correctly you'll still be able to send messages through the GV app. (And it won't sit on "Sending...", it'll actually deliver the message.) And you shouldn't be charged for it.

that sucks. i recently noticed i can text my friend in canada now. when i started using gv on my wifi only devices, none of my texts would go through to her. that was about 2 years ago. i dont know when they started allowing it but about a month ago we tried again and it works. im in the us. try the suggested wifi/ap mode thing. thats my usual setup anyways.
I am curious about anyone else using messenger for sending sms, if you are having any trouble sending texts that are 160 chars or more. I am on Sprint, and I know I could use a different messaging app, but I really enjoy using messenger. I know a common fix is the sms split, but I'm not seeing this option. Anyone have the same issue or a workaround?
